Tell me all about it! Local celebrity of the month... Just a few weeks ago Steph Wyatt won the title of Miss Dorset! Steph was born and bred in Poole and at the young age of 17, this is quite an achievement. I met up with Steph last week to talk to her about being a ‘celebrity’. I asked if she had always wanted to be a beauty Queen and she told me, “It is every girl’s dream to be in a pageant and I feel very lucky to be able to enter the competition.” Steph has always been very close to her Dad and she told me on her first Cat Walk, her Dad had very proud tears pouring down his face. “Seeing him made my lips quiver” she told me, “making it difficult to smile!” “He has always been there for me and I have always been with him.” Steph continued, smiling. Being a beauty star is not as easy as it looks as there are many rounds that each girl goes through to eventually end with just one winner. In her next pageant for Miss England, which Steph is really looking forward to, she will need to pass a “Popularity Round”, a “Sports Woman” round where each girl takes part in a boot camp, a “Beach Beauty” round and even an “Eco” round where Steph will have to make her own dress from recycled materials! Steph’s ultimate goal is to travel the world helping others with projects. She feels she can be “a voice for others” and by doing that she can change things for the better. Right now Steph
Miss Dorset 2016, Steph Wyatt has also started a Law Degree, so she is going to be more than busy! There were 22 girls who entered The Miss Dorset competition, but in her next pageant for Miss England, being held in Southport, there will have been 22,000 girls all gunning for the prestigious title. Down to 50 girls in the final, Steph would like to be in the top 15. I believe she has every chance of that. As Miss Dorset, Steph is looking for sponsorship to help with her ambitions. Notes from...
WarehamTown Museum Meet our new Saxon king! You can’t miss him: he will fix his beady eye on you even before you step inside the museum. He is part of our new display about the amazing Saxon sword found in the bed of the River Frome when South Bridge was being rebuilt in 1927. Centrepiece of the display is a replica of the sword as it may have looked when new. We know from the remains of an inscription on the handle that the sword belonged to a member of the royal family or nobility of Wessex, in fact, it is the only Saxon sword found in England with a royal owner’s name on it! Local graphic designer Maria Burns created this powerful image of a king holding the sword. The replica sword is part of a display about Wareham’s illustrious Saxon heritage. Wareham was the biggest and most important town in Saxon Dorset. Coins were minted here – we have some on display - and the famous walls are the best preserved Saxon town defences in England. Visit the museum to find out more. You can also join in on a guided walk I will be leading around Wareham on Friday 22nd July, in Carnival week. The walk starts from the museum at 7pm and is free, but you will have the opportunity to make a donation! See the Wareham Carnival programme for more details.

Wareham Town Museum tells the story of Wareham through the ages, with a special section on Lawrence of Arabia who lived nearby. We have postcards, books, DVDs and games for sale, and a quiz sheet for younger visitors. The museum is situated in the Town Hall, and is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, April to October. Entrance is free. Talking about Wildlife... Marine Giants in Dorset There is nothing more delightful than catching a glimpse of a dolphin family as they splash through the waves off our beautiful coastline. If you’re in luck, you may see either common or bottlenose dolphins, but how many people know that our local seas are also home to other large marine species such as white-beaked dolphins, basking and porbeagle sharks, sunfish and minke whales? Last summer, huge numbers of barrel jellyfish caused a stir, and this coincided with a very rare sighting of a leatherback turtle, eating one of the jellyfish, in Lyme Bay. Loggerhead turtles have also been spotted, as well as the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtle. Turtles normally inhabit tropical seas but sometimes get caught in strong ocean currents, bringing them into colder waters that can kill them. Stranded turtles should never be returned to the sea. Any turtle sightings, dead or alive, should be reported immediately to Dorset Wildlife Trust by phone or social media. There is also disappointing news is that these amazing creatures are threatened

by damaging activities, and it is vital that measures are put in place to protect their environment and allow them to thrive. The Wildlife Trusts and other conservation organisations are calling on the government to act to create protected areas. News from Westminster As we head towards the summer many people start to think about their holidays. We are incredibly lucky here in Dorset that we are able to enjoy the beach throughout the year, whatever the weather. Please do ensure you follow the guidance of the lifeguards when on the beach, and take any litter home so we can all safely appreciate our beautiful coastline.

I am a Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Bees, and there is a planned visit to Kew Gardens to see their multi award winning “Hive” exhibit. This is a multisensory exhibit which was inspired by scientific research into the health of honeybees. Bees and other pollinators play a vital role in in the security of our food supply and the quality of our natural environment. This is especially important in areas such as Dorset. I will continue to both work with our farmers, and support ways in which our bees are protected, to ensure a balanced approach to farming.
As I write this, the result of the referendum is not yet known. I hope that those of you who came to my information meetings found them useful. Whatever the outcome, there is no doubt that we are a great nation and that we will survive whether we remain or leave. We have risen to face great challenges in the past and will certainly do so again in the future.
I recently held a Dementia Friends training session at our office for my staff and local councillors. We are keen to challenge stereotypes and stigma surrounding dementia. One in three adults over 65 will develop some form of dementia, and as a community we need to be aware and willing to support sufferers and their carers in any way we can. There are a number of groups and events open to those with dementia, including special dementia-friendly film showings at the cinema, dancing, gardening and singing clubs, and memory cafes. Wareham Carnival 2016 - July 24th This year has seen the relaunch of Wareham Carnival Queen. It was held in February at the town hall in Wareham and the judges were Lady Mayor Dina Adkins, 2003 Wareham Carnival Queen Holli Nelson and Graeme Blundell who is the Manager at Sainsburys in Wareham and the main sponsor for this event. The winners were: Carnival Queen - Georgia Candy Carnival princesses - Kate Lake and Phoebe Allen The judges all agreed it was a very close contest and that the standard of contestants was very high. Also new this year is the Wareham Scarecrow competition (see below). Anyone can enter by putting a scarecrow in the garden - it must be visible from the road or pavement - then registering
Wareham Sainsburys Manager, Graeme Blundell, with the Carnival Queen, Georgia Candy and her princesses, Kate Lake and Phoebe Allen it with a registration form which they can pick up from from the shops that are listed on the poster. Wareham Carnival is on the 24th July this year at 1pm, it will start in North Street with the procession and make its way up to Wareham Rec via West Street. We are looking for people to support us by putting in carnival floats, walking entrants, also stall holders, teams for the tug of war and the various games that will be going on up the Rec in the arena. Armed Forces flag raised in Purbeck A special flag was raised at Purbeck District Council’s offices on Monday 20 June to mark the start of Armed Forces Week. Attending Wareham for the ceremony were Lieutenant Colonel Will Waugh, Royal Tank Regiment who is The Commanding Officer, Armoured fighting Vehicle Gunnery School in Lulworth. He was accompanied by representatives from The Royal Navy and Marines/ Soldiers based at Bovington and Lulworth. Other dignitaries included the Chairman of Purbeck District Council, Councillor Bill Trite and the Mayor of Wareham, Councillor Doreen Cleaton. Students and teachers from The Purbeck School, members of the public and council staff witnessed the raising of the flag. Councillor Trite said: “If I may speak widely on behalf of the people of Purbeck, I express our gratitude and appreciation for all that our Armed Forces do for us in the course of their duty to the Nation. “The ultimate expression of the role of our Services personnel is, of course, the undertaking of military operations when and if circumstances require – a task which demands constant preparedness, the highest standards of training and, indeed, the willingness if necessary to lay down their lives in the defence of this country, its people and its way of life.” “The military men and women also pay a very important part in responding to a range of civil emergencies and here in Purbeck we are fortunate to have the military reassuringly close at hand, though
we would prefer never to have to need that kind of assistance.” Councillor Trite concluded: “As well as this ceremony today, we also look forward to witnessing this Friday the Armour Centre and the Old Boys’ Association of the Junior Leaders’ Regiment exercising their right to march through Purbeck in accordance with the Freedom of the District conferred on them by this Council in 2010.” Councillor Trite concluded: “Long may the close ties between our Armed Forces and the District of Purbeck continue.” Lieutenant Colonel Will Waugh, AFV Gunnery School representing Colonel Gordon Judd, Commander of the Armour Centre and Bovington Garrison said: “2016 is a very special year for us, not only do we celebrate the centenary of Bovington and Lulworth camps, but also the centenary of the development of armoured vehicles in warfare itself. The Garrison of Bovington and Lulworth has played a critical part in the training of vehicle crews and will continue to do so for many years to come.” Lieutenant Colonel Waugh continued: “At the start of Armed Forces Week, it is beholden on me to thank everybody in Purbeck District for their continual support to the Armed Forces and indeed their forbearance, particularly when we undertake armoured vehicle movement and night firing. We also look forward with great vigour to the Freedom of Purbeck Parade this Friday to once again re-establish our fantastic links with the District.”

Wareham Art Club celebrates 25th Anniversary Wareham Art Club is a friendly group of people of all ages and abilities who enjoy painting and drawing. We meet in Wareham Parish Hall most Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings throughout the year to socialise and to produce our own work; to learn from demonstrations by visiting artists once a month, and to present exhibitions several times a year. The first meeting of the Club was held in September 1991, and the late Pam Hayes, the founder of the Club, said at the time that “the accent is on people getting together and enjoying art and painting”. This is our ethos, and we continue to strive to fulfil Pam’s wish to be a truly creative organisation, to develop hidden talents, and to have fun! This year – 2016 – is our 25th Anniversary, and to celebrate this event we have devised a project to be unveiled at our
Summer Exhibition on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July in Wareham Town Hall. We will have a display of small paintings in identical frames and for sale at the same price of £25, which will show the diversity of work and individuality of style of our members. Wareham Art Club would like to invite you to come and view our Exhibition and Anniversary Project in July, and then afterwards we will be exhibiting our paintings at the Orchard Café at Holme for Gardens near Wareham from Tuesday 2 August until Monday 12 September. Are you married or in a civil partnership? If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying basic 20% tax? If you’ve just answered yes, then you’re one of 4.1million couples due a free £212 a year, but the likelihood is you’re in the 80% who haven’t claimed it, so I’m going to tell you how. This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it, and am starting to make a breakthrough. To inspire you, here’s just a few of the scores of recent tweets I’ve got on it. TingTing: @MartinSLewis THANK YOU! Just signed up for marriage allowance, £212 in our pocket. DO IT PEEPS ... it’s quick and simple to do! Matty: @MartinSLewis Thank you for letting us know about the Marriage Tax Allowance. Only took 2 minutes to complete and £212 saved per year. Q. Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If you’ve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than £10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under £42,385. You both must be under 80 (then there’s another tax break). Don’t overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as “I’m a volunteer”, “I only work part time”, “I don’t work”. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesn’t pay income tax? If you are, you count – simple as that. Q. How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance – that’s the amount you can earn tax-free – to their partner. Imagine Tyrone earns £10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for £1,060 of his taxfree allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So that’s £1,060 of earnings she would’ve paid tax on at 20% that’s now tax free. As 20% of £1,060 is £212, that’s your gain.
Q. How do you claim it? It’s a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/ marriage-allowance or call 0300 200 3300. You’ll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, it’s the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up – people do it the other way round and then wonder why they’re rejected. Q. Do I get it every year? Yes, it’s done via a change in your tax code that remains, so it’s £212 a year gain every year and once you’ve applied it’s done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them. Q. Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you can’t go back further than that. Q. What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn’t matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assessment bill. Q. What if I’m a non-taxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. @MoneySavingExpert

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Now you all know that Nellie, the Purbeck Publications Campervan, is getting on a bit. She has aches and pains from time to time and last month her “ticker” just wouldn’t get started. A new pace maker (alias battery), was called in, the surgeons got to work (otherwise known as Longham Motor Engineers) and Nellie is now able to take us out again. Thank goodness! Such a relief. Well, my Dad is 82 years old and still goes match fishing, lugging his gear up and down the banks, giving the younger men a good run for their money. Nellie is taking a leaf out of his book. In January this year Dad had his second knee operation - We now call him the Bionic Man. When I rang him all excited about us all going back to Santorini in Greece, you can imagine that he hesitated somewhat. My Mum was more than concerned. Taking after my Dad and not wanting to give

up on the idea, I kept ringing to see how he was doing. I knew Dad was determined to make it. Just like Nellie, who is afterall over 200,000 km’s old, I believe that the power of the mind as well as good medical care and good nutrition (diesel in Nellie’s case...) can overcome a lot. Santorini was a great holiday and one of the highlights was a trip to the live volcano. I never thought Dad would make it, but he did! This is what Dad wrote to his surgeon recently, who requested photos for his website... “On the 11th January 2016 I had a total knee replacement to my left leg which was carried out by Mr H Sharma. I was in hospital for 5 days. (My right knee was replaced some 7 or 8 years ago.) In late February I decided I was fit enough to go on the Family holiday due to commence on 2nd April 2016 to the Greek Island of Santorini. On the 2nd day of this holiday we booked a full day boat trip which would take us out to the various islands. Our first stop

was a Volcanic one which entailed a 1,500 meter ascent over black volcanic rock and cinders, about 2 hours there and back. The family did not expect me to attempt this, but I said if I have to turn back, I will. However, I made it to the summit and back, just some 81 days after the operation! And no after effects! To say how very grateful I am to Mr Sharma is an understatement!” Stan Outlaw.... Dad! So just like my Dad (who I am very proud of), Nellie will continue to take us out, overcoming whatever ailments. We hope she inspires you to do the same. Getting out and about in the fresh air is a great therapy. On that note, last month Nellie took us to “The Reptile Centre” near Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Oh boy those snakes sent shivers down Nellie’s chassis and the burping toads certainly made her chuckle. At the centre you can discover more about British reptiles and amphibians and how they are being conserved in the New Forest. They have in fact the only collection of all the native lizards, snakes, frogs and toads, including

Britain’s only venomous snake - the adder - and rarest lizard - the sand lizard. It is a great place for adults and children to wander around, observe and learn and even take a picnic on the forest trail. Nellie, with her ‘new ticker’ thoroughly enjoyed driving there, through our wonderful terrain of fields and trees surrounded by gorgeous horses and ponies. Hayden loved taking photographs en route as we slowly motored along. Oh those lazy sunny days, don’t we just love ‘em! The coffee on arrival from Nellie’s whistling kettle was just what I needed. So yes, Nellie has had a busy month. There are lots of activities in July and August so we will not be bored and Nellie will have no time to rest, that is for sure! Where will she take us next…? Chocolate Chip Short Bread Cookies Enjoy these easy yet tasty cookies!
INGREDIENTS
½ teaspoon of baking powder 225g plain flour ¼ teaspoon of salt 100g caster sugar 225g unsalted butter 60g walnuts (chopped) 125g chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 150C or Gas Mark 2. In a medium sized bowl, mix together the sugar and the butter. Do this until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. In a separate bowl add together the flour, the baking powder and salt. Then sieve them together into the butter and sugar mixture. Gradually stir in then add the walnuts and chocolate chips and stir in again. Roll the dough into 12 small balls and place them on a greased baking tray evenly spaced apart. Flatten them slightly on top before putting them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. When they are ready the edges of the cookies should be a golden brown.

On Your Plot Start them young
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into
the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.
