Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis! I love this time of year! There are lots of shows, family holidays, the sun is shining, the air is warm and we all seem to have more time to get together and generally enjoy ourselves. There is of course the very popular Swanage Carnival, not to be missed. Dinosaurs will soon be on display at the Wareham Museum. There is also an historical walk around Wareham on 22nd July. There is a Jurassic Walk around Corfe Castle and guided walks around Lulworth. The Rex Cinema has a great variety of films and The Swanage Railway is always a winner. Don’t miss the huge amount of events detailed on the Purbeck Events pages! Such a lot of excitement and good reasons to get outside and enjoy our wonderful English environment. In this month’s issue of The Wareham District Directory there are lots of local trades, businesses and shops who want to make your summer a good one! Notes from...
WarehamTown Museum Exciting new displays will be unveiled in the museum in the near future. A new Jurassic Coast display will focus on dinosaurs! The museum has a fossil footprint of an Iguanodon, and this will be the centrepiece of the display. Also on show will be ammonites and other fossils which can be found in Purbeck. We are holding an event linked with the display, which will involve building dinosaurs from kits! It will be on Saturday 30 August in the Corn Exchange, Wareham Town Hall. The centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 is fast approaching and we will have a new display about Wareham during the war. Life in the town was transformed by the huge military camp built on both sides of the Worgret Road. The wooden huts of the camp housed up to 7,000 troops, three times the population of the town! They carried out training exercises in the area before being sent to ďŹ ght in France.

Iguanadon by Zdenek Burian (1962) Everyone is invited to take part in a guided walk around historic Wareham on Tuesday 22 July, 7-9pm. Meeting point will be Wareham Quay and the walk will end at the museum, where the Wareham Saxon sword, on loan from the Dorset County Museum for this year only, can be seen, as well as many other relics from the town’s past. The walk is free but donations to the museum will be invited. It will be led by me and is being held as part of the nationwide Festival of Archaeology. Wareham Museum tells the story of Wareham from prehistoric times to the present day. It is situated in the Town Hall, Wareham, and is open 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday. Entrance is free. How you can help us improve our hospitals This is the year of change for our hospitals. We are focused on making improvements and delivering excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere - and you can help us. One of our key values is communication; this means taking time to listen and learn from our patients, visitors and our staff and making improvements. Here are just two examples of changes we have made:
Elderly short stay ward Ward 22 is now a short-stay ward for elderly patients. Designated social workers, discharge planning workers and experienced therapists have joined the nursing and medical staff on the ward and are enabling patients to get home sooner. Staff nurse and discharge planner, Victoria Coe, says: “It is great to see patients going home more quickly which makes them happy, and means we can spend more time with them when they are here.”
Same day emergency treatment Not all patients attending hospital as an emergency need to be admitted. We have expanded our Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) services so that patients referred by their GP, or seen in the Emergency Department, can receive same day care with follow up if necessary. We can also support early discharge by reviewing patients in AEC. Lead nurse Sonia Mahmoud, says: “Our patients are leaving happy in the knowledge that all their assessment needs have been met within a safe and friendly environment.”
Your feedback Your feedback is very important to us. It helps us know where we need to improve and we have a number of different ways of asking our patients for their views. The Patients Association is supporting us with a Care Campaign Audit. Patients are asked about their care while they are here and any areas for improvement are immediately fed back to the ward so any concerns can be acted on quickly. Here are just some of the changes we have made recently following patient comments: You said: “It would be nice to have the same nurse treating me.” We did: Implemented bay-based nursing where a nurse is assigned to a bay and is accountable for that bay.

You said: “Visiting time is too short to visit patients and talk to staff about patient care.” We did: We have lengthened visiting times to improve access to staff. Patients who require assistance with eating meals during their hospital stay are also able to turn to their families and carers for assistance, with support from hospital staff. You said: “Pharmacy was very slow and took three hours to dispense medication on day of discharge.” We did: A new pharmacy tracker screen to track prescriptions has been installed. Two new healthcare assistants now assist with medication sign-off and ward staff are working more closely with Pharmacy to anticipate when a patient may be discharged.
Learning from complaints We know things don’t go right all of the time, but we can learn a lot from your feedback when care doesn’t live up to the high standards we aspire to. Delivering high quality care includes dealing with complaints in a positive, open and understanding way. We have reviewed our complaints policy and are now even more focused on understanding the issues to be addressed. We are responding more quickly and meeting with those who have raised concerns so they are fully involved in the process. These are your hospitals and you can help us shape the way we deliver care. We want to provide a quality service that meets your needs so we will continue to listen and deliver excellent care for every patient, every day, everywhere.

Visitors invited to TG FKUEQXGT /WNYQTVJ Visitors to the Jurassic Coast are being invited to take a closer look at area’s unique qualities in a series of events and activities organised by the Lulworth Rangers. The Rangers, who help look after the 20 square mile Lulworth Estate including five miles of the Jurassic Coast are sharing their knowledge through a programme of guided walks, creative workshops, farm visits and hands-on discovery sessions throughout the summer months.
“Most of the events are free or carry just a small covering charge and take place in some of the most glorious locations of anywhere along the Jurassic Coast.” ‘There are many stories to tell about this part of the coast and countryside and knowing them can only enhance everyone’s experience’, explained Education Ranger Derek Billings. ‘The spectacular rock formations of Lulworth are unique, but it’s only when you discover that they illustrate 85 million years of the earth’s history that they get really interesting. Similarly, we are inviting

visitors to discover the habits of bats and moths, butterflies and sea creatures and to take part in beach art, fossil making and wildlife photography’. The programme of events takes place in and around Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and East Lulworth on the privately owned Lulworth Estate. Bee wildlife friendly This summer, make your garden bee friendly. Bees are fundamental to the ecosystem, the food chain and our health; they enable the plants around us to grow by pollinating their flowers. The foods we eat – fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds – depend upon this process, as do many animals and birds. There are over 250 species of bees in Britain, including the bumblebee, the solitary bee and the honeybee. Solitary bees live alone, but bumblebees and honeybees live in large colonies which can contain up to 50,000 bees. Most of the bees in these colonies work by gathering pollen, which they bring back to the hive on their back legs. This pollen is transformed into honey. An individual worker bee can visit 14,000 flowers a day. Pollen is transferred between from the anther (the male part) of one flower to the stigma (the female part) of another. When a bee finds a good source of food, it dances in a figure of eight pattern. The angle of this dance in

relation to the sun tells other bees where the food source is. Other bees in the colony will then fly to the plant to collect pollen and nectar. Unfortunately, factors such as modern farming practices have made life harder for bees to find natural habitats, and this has led to a steep decline in their numbers. Beekeepers work to protect the bee population by maintaining their own colonies, some of which are used to provide pollination services to farmers, but more help is needed. If you want to help conserve the bee population, fill your garden with beefriendly flowers. These flowers are rich in pollen and nectar. Recommended plants include foxgloves, Californian poppies and geraniums, but you should fill your garden with a wide variety so that at least two flowers are in bloom each season. Purbeck Strings is a music charity aiming to make music accessible to all. Susan Stanford the artistic director had the musical vision to create an opportunity for string players of all ages and abilities to play together alongside professionals. Purbeck Strings have developed an annual programme of events of which the March Purbeck Strings Festival is the centrepiece. It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but things are looking a tad better for drivers. There was no Budget petrol tax rise, and a supermarket price war sees costs now at an average £1.29/litre – that's 13p less than the peak, while insurance prices have come off their peak too. Yet if the Stig's helmet had eyes, even they'd probably still water about the fact that car running costs alone are an average £3,500/year. So I want to help you rev up your motoring savings. Note the free website PetrolPrices.com lists the day’s cheapest petrol stations in your area for unleaded, diesel, LPG and other fuels. Hidden council MOT centres can mean fewer fails. 40% of MOTs fail first time, often for trivialities such as bust light bulbs or poor windscreen wipers. So always do a quick walk-around and, where possible, fix before. For the test itself, if you've a long-term trusted garage, great. If not, little-known council MOT test centres generally don't do repairs, so have less incentive to fail you. The feedback on these is great, with many saying they get far fewer fails. There’s a full list at www.mse.me/mots Has the PHOTO on your licence expired? You risk a £1,000 fine. While the licence itself may be valid, the photo needs renewing every 10 years. Two million have expired, so check your card's section 4b date and if it’s expired, go to www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence to renew. There's no one cheapest insurer, so the aim's to get as many quotes as possible. Yet different comparison sites cover different insurers, so always check at least two for a wider spread. Then check the ones they miss – including biggies www.aviva.co.uk and www.directline.com .Yet it’s also about understanding the counter-logical ways to save. - Third party's not always cheapest. Even though it’s meatier cover, the mere fact of selecting comprehensive insurance makes some insurers consider you a lower risk, which outweighs the cost for the bigger cover. So if you’re looking for the cheapest, always check both. - Got more than one car? Comparison sites only do single vehicles. Manually check www.admiral.com’s multi-car policy deals and, if time, www.churchill.com and

www.directline.com discounts. Young drivers, try adding parents as second drivers. Strange as it sounds, adding a responsible second driver to your policy can bring costs down. This is because insurance is about risk, so they can bring the average down. It's a case of trial and error with different firms. Yet never put someone as the main driver on the car unless they really are the main driver. Doing this falsely is called fronting; it’s illegal and can invalidate your insurance. Parking tickets from supermarkets, housing estates or any private car park do better impressions than Rory Bremner. Some even call themselves Parking Charge Notices to mimic official council Penalty Charge Notices. Yet they're not fines, just invoices. If a ticket's unfairly slapped on your windscreen (eg, there were no signs), reply explaining why it's unfair and that you won't pay. It may huff and puff, yet it can't "hit your credit record" or "send bailiffs" without the time and expense of court action. If it's an unfair council ticket, don't just accept it - you have rights. Of those appeals already turned down by councils, 50% win if they keep going to the final stage. Full help and template letters at www.mse.me/parking. Cut fuel use up to 30% by driving more efficiently. This isn’t about slowing down (though that can help if you’re a boy or girl racer). The real keys are: a) Change gear up earlier to keep revs down. b) Treat the accelerator like a money pump - the harder you press, the more fuel flows. c) Slow naturally rather than ramming the brakes to use up the car’s momentum. If possible, also reduce your vehicle’s weight and drag, then it needs less fuel to travel. So dejunk your trunk many carry unnecessary weight in the boot, correct your tyre pressure and more.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the
27 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. Tastes so good... SYRUP AND FRUIT COOKIES

No one can resist the taste and smell of a freshly baked cookie, straight from the oven. These yummy delights have the sweetness of sultanas mixed in and are best enjoyed with a glass of cold milk from the fridge.
Ingredients: 340g self raising flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 200g soft margarine 200g Demerara sugar 200g golden syrup 50g sultanans 50g chopped nuts 50g chopped cherries
Equipment: Flat tray, covered with baking parchment Preheat the oven to 190°c or gas mark 4-5 Method: Place margarine, syrup and sugar in a bowl and mix together. Pour in the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly to form a dough. Place the dough in the fridge for an hour, for best results place in fridge overnight. When cold divide into 20 balls and press them lightly onto the baking tray. Place in the oven for 10 to 15mins until golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack.

National Trust in Purbeck Middle Beach at Studland is ready for summer after work to tidy up the aftermath of the February storms. Contractors were on site for three days earlier this month making good the landslip which represented the most significant damage suffered by the Studland beaches over a wild winter. The work is an interim measure to improve access to the beach and protect businesses for the short term. Earlier work improved access to Studland Sea School and the Middle Beach Café after the landslip closed one of the pedestrian routes to the beach. Longer term solutions for both businesses will be sought as part of the National Trust’s strategy of managed realignment in the face of coastal change. The effects of coastal change on Studland as a whole will meanwhile be kept under review. The National Trust and Bournemouth University co-hosted a Bioblitz at Studland this month with the aim of recording as many species as possible on one day. The event on Sunday June 15 brought together young and old, many of whom had never taken part in wildlife recording before. Experts were available to identify shells and seaweed collected on the beach, maps and information guides were available together with a ‘most wanted’ list of species to tick off.

Guided walks led by naturalists explored the many faces of the natural word in Studland, including birds, reptiles, plants, dragonflies and minibeasts. Students from Bournemouth University helped run the activities and the event was partly organised by National Trust ecologist David Brown. “It was nice to get new people and family groups involved in biological surveying,” he said. David heads the Cyril Diver project, which is looking at the way the natural scene in Studland has changed since a pioneering ecological study was carried out there in the 1930s. All sorts of issues are brought up - church versus atheism, landowners versus socialism, the creeping Americanism of culture this side of the Atlantic. The stations at Norden, Corfe Castle, Harmons Cross, Herston and Swanage provide access to historic villages, country walks and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Rebuilt from nothing Swanage Railway, an award winning standard gauge preserved steam railway, offers one of the country’s most intensively operated heritage steam and diesel timetable train service than virtually any other preserved railway. Trains run daily from April to October as well as most weekends throughout the year.
