Dear residents of Wareham and the surrounding area, I wonder if the cold weather which we have been promised will be here by the time you read this? To date we have been really lucky with the mild climate. Certainly, on New Year’s Day, which seems oh so far away now, we had a wonderful stroll at Durdle Door and then a walk back in time at Tyneham Village, all in bright sunshine and very mild temperatures for the time of year. You can read all about it in this month’s issue of your magazine. I do think it is important to get out in the fresh air when we can. How are you doing with your plans for 2019? We booked our holiday last week, which is very exciting. Hayden is going skiing with school in Italy, something none of us have done before, so I am sure he will really enjoy that. He is also busy with his Duke of Edinburgh Award, doing some volunteering work and has joined a running club with his friend. I wish I was that energetic! All in all, we have had a pretty good start to 2019. How about you? Don’t forget that if you need help with the house; renovations, plumbing problems, electric issues, decorating badly needing doing, the garden is unsightly, the trees have taken over, then the local trades people inside your little magazine are here for you. Give them a call and do mention us. We know many of them fairly well now. News from Westminster Who said “I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”? [answer at the bottom] These are wise words and in recent months we seem to have lost the ability to disagree well and to argue without it spilling over into something more. As I write, there are many news reports about some of the abuse that MPs have been receiving, both on social media and outside Parliament. Very sadly, although all MPs receive abuse, it seems to me that it is targeted towards female MPs in particular. We are very lucky in Britain that we are a democracy, and one of the rights that we have is that of free speech. There are many countries in the world where protesting and disagreeing with the government can land you in prison. And so, it is absolutely right that within the law people should be able to say what they think, but it is unacceptable for anyone to be threatened or intimidated as a result of their views. Expressing opinions must never tip over into abuse and violence. The House of Commons does not usually sit on a Friday. But last month there was an emergency Business Motion allowing a sitting Friday to debate Brexit. I spoke on that day and the importance of language and tone was stressed. Winston Churchill’s grandson Sir Nicholas Soames set the tone, and it was a remarkably constructive debate – perhaps because of the more unusual step of sitting on a Friday. Another strength of our democracy, is that anyone can come and visit Parliament in person. If you would like to do so, you can book a midweek free democratic access tour through your MP, me! This is available to all UK residents. The tour route varies and these bookings must be done in advance. If you want to watch a debate, you can turn up and watch from the public gallery. This is free, although you may have

to queue for more popular debates. If you want to experience the spectacle that is Prime Minister’s Questions on a Wednesday, you will need tickets. Please do contact me if you would like to do so. Tickets are limited, and not always available, but I will do my best to get you in! There are also audio and guided tours of the building on Saturdays, which are cheaper if booked in advance on the Parliament website, with 1 child free with each paying adult. Purbeck District Council welcomes decision regarding the toll increase on ferry Purbeck District Council has welcomed news that the Secretary of State for Transport has refused an application for toll increases for the Sandbanks to Studland Ferry.

Following objections to the increases by local residents, businesses and councils, the application by the BournemouthSwanage Motor Road and Ferry Company was referred to the Secretary of State who decided that a local Public Inquiry should be held. Six local councils* worked together to object to the proposed increases, and a barrister presented their case to an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State at the public inquiry in September 2018. The Inspector has now reported to The Secretary of State and, on 12 December 2018, confirmation was received that the application had been refused. The Secretary of State agreed with the Inspector’s conclusions that, although a replacement ferry will be necessary at some stage, there was no confirmation that a toll rise would result in this being achieved. The Secretary of State also agreed there is no assurance that the ferry replacement reserve would be safeguarded and reach the level required to enable a replacement vessel. He said the fact the ferry replacement fund was not ring fenced and did not provide for an assured separate fund was “a significant area of concern.”

The Bournemouth Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company must wait at least another 12 months before it can make another application.

Councillor Gary Suttle, Leader of Purbeck District Council said: “We welcome the Secretary of State’s decision to refuse the application. “We had grave concerns that the proposed increases would only benefit the ferry company, whilst leaving residents who rely on the ferry disadvantaged. “The increases would also have a detrimental effect on our local economy and the district’s already-congested roads, so the company needs to radically alter its approach to its ferry replacement fund before it makes another application.” * The six councils were Purbeck District Council; Swanage Town Council; Corfe Castle Parish Council; Studland Parish Council; Wareham St Martin Parish Council; and Worth Matravers Parish Council.

WarehamTown Museum Wareham Town Museum opens for the season on Saturday 6 April. Join us for the grand opening at 2pm. There will be fun things for youngsters to do in the corn exchange, and refreshments will be available. 2018 was a successful year, with new displays and several events. In February we held an open day where old photos of Wareham were on display. In June the Wareham Saxon sword returned on loan from the County Museum at Dorchester. Professor David Hinton of Southampton University gave a lecture on the sword in the corn exchange which was so popular that there was standing room only for many. The ghost walk in October was enjoyed by those who braved the rain! We welcomed 6,493 visitors, a decrease on previous years, probably because of the fine summer weather; museums nationally had a similar experience. Entrance to the museum is free, but we raised significant funds from donations in the museum and at events. Wareham Town Museum tells the story of the Wareham area from prehistoric times to the present day. It is owned by Wareham Town Council and is run by volunteers. In the open season, April to October, a team of 25-30 of us work two-hour shifts to keep the museum open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Thatâ€™s about 1,080 hours, with a notional value of over ÂŁ10,000. Running the museum behind the scenes takes as many hours again, year round. Here are just some of the tasks involved: creating displays; cataloguing objects which are donated (we collect objects with a local connection); ensuring that temperature,

Talking about Wildlife...

Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to ﬁnd food, so they need all the help they can get! The Adventures of Nellie

The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Tyneham Village on the Isle of Purbeck. Frequently described as a “ghost town” and you certainly feel that when you visit. Poor Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan who ‘retired’ earlier this year would have loved the walk back in time in this beautiful, serene, yet sad ambience. In 1943 the Army took over the village, to use the land as their training ground, promising its long-established inhabitants that they could return after the war. That never happened and now still used as an army training ground with tanks and artillery flying by intermittently, the general public is allowed to visit at designated times and days of the year. By chance we took a drive out to the Purbecks on New Years Day, and what a gorgeous day it was. Glorious sunshine, a wonderful crisp English winter’s day. Stephen, Hayden and I set off for Durdle Door to breathe in the “new air” of 2019 and gaze into the vast space beyond the cliff tops. Glistening turquoise blue water shimmering below us with swirling white clouds above us. What

There is a lot of information in the area a wonderful way to start the New Year. The gates at Durdle Door were closing earlier than usual, and I had seen the sign to Tyneham Village on the way. Having never been to the village it seemed a good idea to go and by sheer luck it was open to the public. I would suggest if you want to go, that you check the opening times as you really would not want to be disappointed. You can visit www. dorsetforyou.gov.uk/lulworth-rangewalks to check before you set off. Many of the houses in this former vibrant village are dilapidated, with long lost roofs and broken walls which all adds to this ‘walk back in time’ and mystical feeling which enshrouds the whole area. Nothing bad happened there, except of course that all its inhabitants were taken from their homes and rehoused, to be told they could return. Maybe that is the sadness which hangs over these houses. 27 lived there, what were they like, what was life like in those days? Many questions pop up in your mind as you look in wonder. The atmosphere is very quiet and calm. Quite in contrast with the army vehicles, tanks and guns which practice their aim at the targets literally a stone’s throw away when the public are allowed no where near the village. The School House and Church are still fully intact and now little museums to commemorate those who lived there. There are old black and white photos, memorabilia and reminders of our bygone days. Very special. The school is particularly a reminder of the changes which have taken place in the last 60 years. This was a place you did not backflash your elders or question them in any way. Cheekiness was frowned upon. Silence in the classroom was demanded. Yet it also seemed a happy place, one of learning and comradeship, a chance to read about the rest of the world, understand sums and get to know other boys and girls. Personally, I love old churches, and this was does not

The Old School House, Tyneham disappoint either. Idyllic. Set in its own gardens, it is a wonderful example of our many historic buildings. We are so lucky. The village has been featured in the movies too, In 1985 it was used for the filming of Comrades, which depicts the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I have not seen that, have you? Then in 2006 the village was used as the setting for the climax of the comicthriller Angel’s Share by Mike Ripley which I have also not seen. Maybe I will have a look and see if I can find them. February Half Term Fun at King John’s Castle

In what has become a popular annual event Maiden Newton Village Hall will open its doors between 10.30am and 2.00pm to welcome all keen gardeners be they allotment veterans experienced enthusiasts or complete novices who would like to talk to some experts find helpful advice and share tips on all things gardening. 700 varieties of heritage and heirloom seeds many varieties of onion sets and shallots together with some unusual tubers rhubarbs artichokes and dahlias will all appeal to anyone wanting to get stuck in to their kitchen garden. Gardening Tips

On Your Plot Now is the time to go undercover It’s still pretty chilly during February but planting seedlings under glass (or plastic) can give you a great start for the season ahead. A bit of time and money invested now in a polytunnel or greenhouse will give you benefits for years to come. Can’t wait for Spring to come? There’s plenty of vegetables that can be started off indoors now.

Jobs for February:-

• Erect a cold frame, polytunnel or greenhouse • Plant out onion sets • Sow tomatoes indoors • Chit seed potatoes • Sow early beetroot and summer cabbages • Plant soft fruit bushes The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be blooming cold! Extremes in weather are typical for this month so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as it if’s come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come. Which is best? Consider the space available - if space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option. Green houses can oﬀer lots of beneﬁts but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they

are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try free cycle). We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on. With both greenhouses and polytunnels you need to remember that they can become very hot in the summer and ensure that adequate ventilation is available. So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer. Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon? This is also a good month to think about soft fruit . Most fruit bushes, trees and canes need time to get established before you start to get a good yield and it is easy to overlook them in favour of crops that give a quicker return. If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month, or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather. Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.

Pecan crusted chicken breast stuffed with roasted butternut squash and goats cheese served with a white wine and pancetta cream sauce

1. Pre heat the oven to 380F/180c. 2. Place the butternut squash onto a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place into the oven to bake until cooked through and starting to turn golden brown; this should take For the stuffed chicken approximately 15 to 20 minutes. 4 chicken breasts 3. Using a small knife, make an incision into the side of each chicken 170g butternut squash (peeled and breast. Move the knife around horizontally inside the breast to create a diced) pocket for the filling. Try to keep the incision no wider than an inch in 1 tbsp freshly chopped thyme length to keep the filling from spilling out when cooking. 100g soft goats cheese 4. Fill each breast with equal amounts of goats cheese and butternut Sea salt and freshly ground black squash by pushing them through the incision. Close the incision with a pepper cocktail skewer. Save some roasted butternut squash to garnish the tops 250g toasted pecans, finely chopped of the chicken breasts when they are cooked. 3 free range eggs, beaten 5. Sprinkle each filled breast with the chopped thyme and season 50ml olive oil generously with sea salt and black pepper. For the sauce 6. To prepare the pecans take whole pecans and pulse them in a food ¼ white onion (finely diced) 4 slices of pancetta or smoked streaky processor until they resemble course breadcrumbs. 7. Beat the eggs with ¼ tsp of salt (which helps to break down the egg bacon, chopped making it easier to dip the chicken in) and place the chopped pecans into 1 tsp freshly chopped thyme a bowl. Then dip each cutlet into the egg mixture and then the pecans 1 clove garlic, crushed and make sure they are well coated. 180 ml double cream 8. Place the chicken breasts onto a tray drizzled with olive oil and then 120 ml dry white wine drizzle each breast generously with more olive oil and season once more. 4 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Place into the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. 9. Garnish the escallops with the remaining caramelized onions and freshly chopped parsley, don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewers before serving! 10. To make the sauce start by sautéing the pancetta or bacon until crispy and then add the onions and cook through until softened. At this point add the garlic and thyme and continue to cook for another minute to release the flavors. 11. Add the white wine and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until almost all of the wine has evaporated. Then add the cream, parmesan and seasoning. Continue to simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 12. To serve, place each chicken breast onto a serving plate (don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewer) and spoon over the sauce. Top with some of the remaining butternut squash and some roughly chopped pecans and Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb a sprinkle of parsley. chef - www.thefoodbible.com
