Talbot Village Trust aids local ‘ecotherapy’ project Talbot Village Trust has provided Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) with more than £2,000 to purchase essential tools and materials for DWT’s Greengage ‘ecotherapy’ project in Swanage. The Greengage project is a wellbeing ‘hub’ designed to help people with mental health issues in the local community, through ‘ecotherapy’ and therapeutic horticulture. DWT runs the project at a former commercial plant nursery owned by Swanage Town Council, and volunteers are currently restoring the site to create a space suitable for the growth of wildlife friendly plants, fruit and vegetables. Through the project, participants are supported in undertaking practical tasks, gain informal training, and develop team working and communication skills. This donation has helped DWT progress the project by enabling people to undertake horticultural activities using the tools and materials purchased and building structures for horticultural purposes.

Katie Wilkinson, community conservation officer for Dorset Wildlife Trust, said: “Carrying out activities in a natural environment provides benefits for our health and wellbeing. The funding received from Talbot Village Trust has enabled us to improve the Greengage site which is used for our ‘ecotherapy’ project, which allows us to continue to support everyone involved through the shared love of horticulture.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “Talbot Village Trust fully supports any project which promotes mental health awareness and support within the local community. DWT should be proud of the fact it has created and continues to run this project, and in return help so many people.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in the spring. Notes from...

WarehamTown Museum The iconic Saxon sword returns to Wareham! The sword was found deep in the bed of the River Frome during the construction of the new South Bridge in 1927. There was no museum in Wareham at the time, so it has been in the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester since then. The museum loaned it to us in 2012 and 2014 and it will be on loan to us this year and next year while the County Museum is redeveloped. The sword is a very rare and special find. It was made in the late 900s. The hilt and roughly half the blade survive, with remains of intricate decoration on the guard and the pommel (end-piece). There are traces of an inscription on the grip which shows that the sword was owned by a member of the royal family of Wessex. It is the only Saxon sword found in England with a royal ownerâ€™s name on it! Wareham was an important town in the Kingdom of Wessex in Saxon times, and there was probably a royal palace here.

Come and see the sword, and our replica of it as it might have looked originally, when the museum re-opens for the season on Good Friday, 30th March. Join us at 2pm to celebrate the occasion. In the meantime, fi nd out more about the sword and Saxon Wareham on our website www.wtm.org.uk and visit our Facebook page. Before that, on 24th February, we are holding an open day to show some items in our collection which are not normally on display. You will be able to see old photographs of Wareham, and we invite you to identify people in some of them, such as school groups. These school photos date from the 1940s up to the 1980s so you might see yourself in one! Also on display will be old maps of Wareham, old newspapers and parish magazines. Talking about Wildlife...

Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Winter is a hard time of year to ﬁnd food, so they need all the help they can get! The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van It was a chilling dark winter’s night. We arrived at Walford Mill Craft Centre all wrapped up with scarves, gloves and torches, ready for our “Murder Mystery” walk. Who did it? What with? These were the allimportant questions and we had just 2 hours to follow the clues and discover the culprit. Would we solve the Mystery in the Vestry? Ivana Cramp had been a keen member of the Minster Choir for years. She had recently come into a large inheritance when her body was found. Was this a deed of greed… or because Ivana had an overpowering,

flat voice? We were about to find out. This is all fiction of course but we really got into the ‘spirit’ of things. Nellie had inadvertently come across “Treasure Trails” while surfing the internet one evening. She is getting very clever as you can see! These trails are described as ‘the fun way to explore’ and can be purchased online at www.treasuretrails.co.uk or often in tourist information offices. There are a series of clues which take you all around a particular area, giving you facts and some history about local sites, whilst you find the answers to each piece of evidence and finally eliminate all but one name and the weapon used. At that point you have the guilty party! There are many places to explore and it is a great way to get to know somewhere. Not all are murder mystery trails, so have a look and

see if there is one where you live or are visiting. It really is a fun way to get around! There were twelve of us taking the challenge that night, wanting to solve the mystery. We tried to guess from the list of people we were given, who ‘did it’ before we started. Julie got it right! How did she know I wonder… Was she really an accomplice? Now Nellie’s imagination was running riot and she was just taking this too far. I have had words with her. It was so much fun. You do not have to do this walk in the dark of course, but Nellie likes to be different and it all added to the ambience of our quest. The bright torches were useful to say the least. We solved the mystery! After all that investigating we were quite exhausted. Like Nellie we are getting on a bit now… Time for something to eat and drink. We had actually booked a carvery at the Bridge House Hotel in Longham. Delicious and great value, Nellie highly recommends it in fact. Probably because you can pile up your plate and go back for seconds. You don’t get thighs like that on lettuce leaves… Well we can safely say that Ivana from the Choir can rest in peace. It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from

their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

Clinical (Medical) Negligence – What It Is and What It Is Not. Legal claims for clinical negligence are often far from simple affairs. Despite our blame/claim culture, a mistake or a bad outcome from a procedure does not necessarily mean there is a clinical negligence claim. Hence, the title of this article. This type of phrasing was used by Florence Nightingale in the title of her book when she penned ‘Notes to Nursing’ in 1859, and explained the fundamentals of nursing – stating ‘What it is and What it is not’. (When you’re next in London, take a trip to her museum at St Thomas’ Hospital for an interesting insight into the nursing profession in its early years.) Clinical negligence is a branch of personal injury litigation. It encompasses claims against Hospital Trusts (both NHS and private) and also includes any issues with healthcare provided in another care setting such as GPs, dentists, cosmetic surgery clinics, pharmacists and care homes. What Makes a Claim? The principles of negligence will tell you if there is a claim. Breaking it down simply, there are three elements. Firstly, the care or treatment must be given in a professional capacity. Secondly, that professional care must fall below the standard of a reasonably competent professional. Thirdly, the illness or injury must only have happened because of the error, or that the error

must have been at least a material cause. Types of Claim Claims take many different forms depending on the circumstances. However, certain factors are common, such as delay in diagnosis, failure in communication and failure to follow set procedures. Blame Culture v Our Reliance on the NHS Hospitals and healthcare providers are central in our society and we rely on the NHS and other healthcare providers to enable us to enjoy life. Tastes so good... Steak and Sweet Potato Chips

February is the month of love. And a beautifully cooked steak is a wonderful way to have a romantic meal a deux, simply and easily. Itâ€™s not that hard to dish up a fabulous supper that is sure to please if you follow the simple instructions.

Ingredients 2 x 200g sirloin steaks 350g sweet potatoes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 50g bag mixed spinach, watercress and rocket Handful of cherry tomatoes 1/3 cucumber, sliced 2 spring onions Coarse ground black pepper. For the dressing 1 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp rapeseed oil Â˝ small garlic clove, crushed

Preheat oven to 200c. Half fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add in the potatoes once chopped and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and return to the saucepan. Pour the oil over and season with a little black pepper. Toss until the potatoes are all lightly coated with the oil and seasoning. Tip the potatoes onto a baking tray and cook for 15 minutes. Turn them all then cook for a further 10 minutes or until crisp and golden. Whilst the chips are cooking, prepare your steak. Trim off any hard fat and then rub all over with the remaining oil. Season with 1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper. Using a griddle or non-stick frying pan, put over a high heat and then add the steaks. Cook for about 2 minutes each side or done until your liking. Set aside and mix the salad leaves, cucumber, chopped spring onions into a bowl. Whisk the vinegar, oil and garlic together. Lovingly lay out the chips and steak onto your plates and add the salad to one side. Drizzle with the dressing just before serving.
