News from Westminster This year, as for the past few years, I have held a Christmas card design competition for local schools. All the school in the constituency are invited to submit their designs, and then the best are chosen by a local artist. These are then made into my Christmas cards that are sent all across the constituency to charities, libraries, business and organisations. Look out for them!
multiple times a day. I was really pleased by the recent government announcement that Flash monitors will now be funded so that they are available for everyone who is eligible. This will make life for people with type 1 diabetes much easier.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is when I get the chance to visit schools in the constituency, or speak to them when they visit Parliament. I was delighted that my office were able to arrange for one of our local schools, Bearwood School, to not only visit the Houses of Parliament, but also go into Downing Street and stand by the famous door of Number 10.

Parliament has been very eventful recently, but I have also been continuing with my constituency visits and surgeries. In Westminster I recently attended a Wildlife Trust reception and met young people from across the country involved in local wildlife trusts to hear their views about the natural environment. I was also pleased to be part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. This is a network of forest conservation initiatives to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth. I was given 5 trees to be planted in the constituency - two silver birch, two rowan, and a hazel which will be planted in the constituency.

Festive free parking in Purbeck Purbeck shoppers and visitors will be able to enjoy some free parking in the run-up to Christmas. Purbeck District Council and Wareham Town Council supported traders on Small Business Saturday, 1 December, with free parking in the District and Town Council car parks at Bonnets Lane; Connegar Lane; Howards Lane; Streche Road; and the Rempstone Centre, Wareham; and at West Street, Corfe Castle. The councils will also be waiving parking charges in their Wareham car parks on Saturday 22, Sunday 23 and Monday 24 December. Free parking will also be available in Corfe Castle West Street car park on Saturdays 8, 15 and 22 December. Councillor Cherry Brooks, Economy and Infrastructure Portfolio Holder for Purbeck District Council, said: “The district of Purbeck is home to a super selection of independent shops and businesses, so why not take advantage of free parking and get something different for friends and family this year.” Councillor Brooks continued: “Christmas is a crucial time for
business and free parking helps us all support our local traders.” Swanage Town Council will be providing free parking in its Broad Road and Main Beach long stay car parks on all the Saturdays in December and the first Saturday in January. On the other days in December, parking will be £1 per day in these two car parks. Norden car park near Corfe Castle, and Dorset County Council-owned car parks at the Quay and St Johns Hill, Wareham are not included in the free parking offer.

Return of longest running Docu-soap, Monkey Life, to our screens on Pick Monkey Life series 11 returned to our screens on channel Pick last month, with the much anticipated catch up of all the rescues and daily dramas at the world’s biggest primate rescue centre. Based at Monkey World, Dorset, the documentary follows Dr Alison Cronin and the team, as she rescues primates in need from around the world, and rehabilitates them into groups of their own kind. At the centre, they have a safe, stable home for life.
Capturing the day-to-day life of residents
The programme is one of the longest running docu-soaps on TV, as its former incarnation, Monkey Business first appeared on screens in 1998. Nicknamed by staff “Beast-enders”, the series won a place in the public’s hearts with its fascinating, and often tragic insight into monkey and ape rescues. Series 11 follows Alison to Lebanon and Turkey to rescue two guenons, a baby loris and a chimpanzee, while back in Dorset it captures the day-today lives of the 260 primate residents of Monkey World.

Filmed over a year, the series takes the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster, from the woolly monkey group celebrating new arrivals, to tense rescue operations, and the teams’ sad goodbyes to old friends too. Monkey Life series 11 will be shown on Freeview channel Pick at 6pm, every Sunday from 11th November 2018.

Thinking Green! Sustainable living seems to have moved higher up on the news agenda’s in 2018. This year there won’t have been many of us who haven’t seen an image of a beach, home or away, littered with plastic, or a beloved marine creature wrapped up in plastic, inside and out. This raises the allimportant question: what can we do about it?
Being ‘green’ and caring for the environment isn’t easy – if it were, we wouldn’t be in this situation. The plastic that pollutes our seas exists because it’s made our lives easier in some way. For some of us, changing our habits to move to an alterative may seem more inconvenient or expensive a�er years of taking the ‘easy option’ which has been given to us. But there are things we can do in our daily lives which take little or no effort and could actually save you money in the process. 1. Reduce single-use plastic: Say no to drinking straws, say no to single use plastic bags and say no to plastic bottles. Did you know some of these items can hang around for over 500 years before they start to break down? Buy a reusable water bottle, go without the straw or buy a material shopping bag you can use time and time again. 2. Composting: Not only is composting your food scraps great for reducing waste, but it’s also beneficial for your garden and its
wildlife. Many councils offer a food waste collection bin – if you have one, make sure you use it!
3. Seafood sourcing: Do you know where your seafood is coming from? 90% of global fish stocks are either fully or over-exploited. Use the Good Fish Guide to find out which fish are the most and least sustainable before you make your purchase. www.mcsuk.org/goodfishguide/ search 4. Replace your coffee cup: Not all takeaway coffee cups are recyclable, so why don’t you help cut down on the waste and get your own reusable coffee cup? Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Purbeck Youth & Community Foundation Youth work week from 5th November highlighted how many services for young people have been cut across the country. We should be pleased we still have youth clubs in Wareham, Corfe Castle and Wool run by qualified youth workers. Local support is so appreciated. Some Youth Club members persuaded us to run a second trip to Thorpe park in the half term and others are planning a trip to Warmwell and the Portsmouth Skate park. Our recent Mexican evening was run by our young volunteers and enjoyed by Year 7 and 8s who meet on a Tuesday evening. Monday evening is year 9 up. Young members gave good contributions to our supporters meeting in half term sharing what they have gained by coming to club. Young people tell us: “Coming to youth club is like family.”
The Not so Youth group has some new members and more people are welcome to pop in on a Thursday morning for a coffee between 10 and 12. We have been delighted with stage one of our refurbishment and are in the process of planning the second stage of refurbishment and getting quotes to see what we can afford. Club members will be bag packing in Sainsburys in November and December. We are always looking for volunteers to help with fundraising and if you are interested in being able to give a little help please get in touch. Some people are giving a small regular donation. Thanks to a new volunteer our website is now found on: www.pycf.org.uk Details about hiring rooms are on there or just contact us.
