The Rotary Dorset Bike Ride: For families and the hardened cyclists The 6th Rotary Dorset Bike Ride in aid of Cancer Research UK is to be held on Sunday 17th September. The ride caters for all levels from the family to the hardened cyclists with 8 routes from just 10 miles up to the challenging Dorset 102 mile Etape. The event is very well organised with plenty of marshals, excellent signage with refreshment stops along the way. We have full back up support including first aid, bike repair or pickup in case of problems. The start and finish is at Longthorns Campsite (next to Monkey World) where there is plenty of parking, and onsite catering plus free massages for riders afterwards. The event has so far raised in excess of £150,000 for Cancer Research UK and other charities. Although raising sponsorship is not compulsory we hope riders will raise funds for cancer and there are rewards and prizes for those that do, including free cycle jerseys and T-Shirts, plus 6 months membership to the Springfield Leisure club in Wareham.

Notes from...
WarehamTown Museum “Australian Soldier’s Fatal Fall” was the headline from a local newspaper in 1917, referring to the death of a soldier on Wareham Walls. What was an Australian soldier doing in Wareham a hundred years ago? During the First World War there was a huge military camp spread out on both sides of Worgret Road, where soldiers from all over the UK and from Allied nations trained before being sent to the front. It was set up on the outbreak of the war and within months it was a town of wooden huts housing up to 7,000 troops. In a corner of Lady St Mary’s churchyard in Wareham are many graves of servicemen who died from illnesses or accidents while based at Wareham Camp. Some of them were Australian. Stanley Halladay, the subject of the
article, and some of his mates, had gone on a pub crawl to Lytchett Minster, on foot, a round trip of 12 miles! On their way back to camp, the worse for wear, in the dark, Halladay fell down the bank of West Walls and died from his injuries three days later. You can find out more about Wareham during the war in Wareham Town Museum. The museum is situated in the Town Hall, and is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, April to October. Entrance is free. Mind Body Soul Exhibition - Art for Wellbeing August 5th – 13th • Open daily between 10am – 5pm Leeson House, Langton Matravers, Swanage, Dorset. BH19 3EU
There is a very special fine art exhibition happening in the stunning Isle of Purbeck this summer, in the form of a collaboration between distinguished local artists Andrew Thomas; sculptor, and Phil Hill; painter. This will be held at the magnificent venue of Leeson House in Langton Matravers, near Swanage in Dorset; a former Mansion House, now used as a field studies centre, set in its own 7-acres of diversely landscaped grounds. Andrew and Phil haven’t exhibited together since 2012, and are promising a real showcase of their art to celebrate this rare occasion. They will be bringing together a large body of their work, High Point by Phil Hill
throughout Leeson House, and in four designated gallery rooms, each with its own ambiance and style. This will be an inspiring opportunity for the visitors to meet the artists and experience their most recent works, which will be unveiled at the exhibition. Andrew will be debuting his latest series of bronze limited edition sculptures, “designed and created with heart and soul”, to produce truly unique works of contemporary, visionary art. These thought provoking pieces reflect the essence of our innermost consciousness, and resonate a divine transcendent energy. He will also be exhibiting a comprehensive number of his other bronze editions, a selection of his original works, and some inspirational pieces from his own collection of award winning work that he has made over the past 30 years. Phil will be showcasing a broad range of his new avant-garde paintings, with an explosion of colour and exquisite form, exploring the depths of surreal and abstract design in his unique and distinguishable style, created to challenge and impact on the viewers’ senses. Phil suffered a serious debilitating illness in 2004. Gradually returning to health, he found that resuming his love of painting significantly aided his recovery. He calls his style of painting “anti depressionism!”. As well as showing his latest work, there will also be a retrospective of some of Phil’s earlier paintings.

Brownfield sites sought for housing in Purbeck Purbeck District Council wants to hear from owners of land, currently containing buildings or other structures, which could be considered for future re-development. As part of a government requirement, the District Council is setting up a register of brownfield sites that have the potential to be developed for housing. Councillor Laura Miller, Housing Portfolio Holder, said “Purbeck District Council supports the use of brownfield land for housing, wherever possible. “The register will show us where suitable and available land is situated in the district so we can consider it for housing development ahead of greenfield sites.” Councillor Miller continued: “I would encourage any landowner who is interested to submit their brownfield land for consideration.” Sites have to be at least 0.25ha (just over half an acre) in size, or capable of supporting at least five homes. The Council has to use the government’s official definition of brownfield land, stipulating a site will either contain buildings and/or structures. Sites containing agricultural buildings or certain mineral extraction, waste disposal sites or historic remains of buildings are not applicable. The Council is able to accept submissions of sites between Monday 17 July and Tuesday 29 August 2017. Submissions can be sent to Purbeck District Council at Westport House,

Talking about Wildlife...
What lies beneath... The annual celebration of the sea with national ‘Marine Weeks’ from 29th July – 13th August is a chance for us to all reflect about what the sea means to us. Living in Dorset means most of us are a stone’s throw away from the beautiful beach, with many of us spending our summer swimming in it, walking along it and admiring it from near or afar. For something that’s such a big part of our lives in Dorset, many of us know very little about the underwater world which lies beneath the waves. Not unlike our neighbourhoods on land, the sea has communities, families and homes which are surviving and reproducing every day; the difference is that we can’t always see this world easily, which makes it hard to understand, and appreciate. In 2013, Dorset had three Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ’s) designated including Poole Rocks MCZ, the South Dorset MCZ and Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, providing protection for the species living there. The charm and charisma of the fascinating marine wildlife which will benefit from this protection should not be underestimated in favour of their land-based counterparts. Cuttlefish, for example, are intelligent animals and masters of deception, deploying secret ‘weapons’ with the cunning of James Bond; squirting enemies in a

cloud of black ink, before making their escape, and trapping prey with lightning-fast tentacles. The black bream which flock to the Poole Rocks MCZ each spring protect their nests to the death and spend weeks creating the perfect nests for thousands of their eggs to hatch. Wildlife of the sea has some amazing stories and characters, from the bizarre looking tompot blenny, the European lobsters’ eyes popping out from between the crevices, to the iconic dolphins who sometimes venture into our world as we marvel at their speed and agility, jumping in and out of the water. There are things we can all do to learn about marine wildlife, and also help it. A partnership project led by DWT, Southern IFCA, the NEFS, MCS, Seasearch and 7 Tenths Ecology Ltd has seen the creation of a fantastic website about Poole Rocks MCZ, complete with high quality video and images, to depict life beneath the sea. The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Don’t we just love listening to the young ones talking about their exploits? Well, Nellie is no exception and she loves to hear what Hayden has been up to. Hayden was lucky enough to be chosen to do the ‘Blue Skies’ Programme, through his school. Blue Skies is part of the Jon Egging Trust (JET) which was set up in memory of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, who tragically lost his life while flying in the Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2011. The Trust realises Jon’s dream of inspiring young people through his love of aviation, teamwork and leadership and it supports young people aged 13-16, to achieve their full potential. This is what Hayden, who is 13, told Nellie… “Joining the group I felt slightly nervous as I didn’t know what it was about, but very excited about going on some special trips that money wouldn’t buy. The first place we went to was MOD Boscombe Down. We saw some planes, went in an olden day hangar and used night vision torches and goggles. It was very exciting. We were also introduced to the concept of Blue Skies which is to

We were challenged with our communication skills here! My favourite trip was when we went to Winchester University. We got to touch a real life 800 year old skeleton. I put its spine together! On a lighter note we were taught how to calculate a skeleton’s age and gender. I learned all about the different bones in the body and that when you are born you have 300 plus bones, but by the time you are an adult they fuse together into 206. After lunch, we looked at some objects that had been excavated and guessed what they were and what year they came from. I really enjoyed that trip!” Hayden said, with a big smile.

29 “Another trip we went to see Nelson’s Ship ‘HMS Victory’ in Portsmouth. It cost £50,834 in those days to build, which is the equivalent of £60 million now! I think that is what she said, it certainly was a lot and more than most people have.” Hayden looked amazed. “The best part was being able to eat in the officer’s mess, as the vessel is still listed as a Navy Ship and still manned. They have nearly replaced every single timber log and plank on the ship, except the strut that Nelson supposedly died on. There is no record of where he actually died but this is where all the clues lead to.” Hayden shuddered. “Apparently the ship’s officers were casually walking up and down the Ship out in the open when a French Musketeer got a lucky good shot at Nelson and hit him in the head. Nelson was the Admiral of the Fleet, not of the Ship itself, so he wasn’t running the ship.” Hayden asserted. “The last trip we went on before the unwanted ending was the ‘Tank Museum’

Nellie’s tinted windows prevented a few scares at Bovington where we finalised our presentations while looking at some very big powerful tanks. We even got to go on the ‘Chieftain’. This tank was created for the Cold War and could fire every 6 seconds compared to the Russian every 8 seconds. The Chieftain was the most powerful tank of its time and quite possibly it still is. I got to sit in the Commander’s seat of the tank!” continued Hayden. “We also got to learn some tank movements with some remotecontrol tanks. This was lots of fun!” “The dreaded day came where we would have to present our speeches that we had created for the sponsors of the Blue Skies and our parents. We were very nervous. Luckily, I had a skeleton to look at instead of the crowd, as I was talking about our trip to Winchester University! Everyone did their speeches and we all got through in the end! Then me and some of the other Blue Skies graduates met up and had fun for the rest of the day. I feel that the Blue Skies programme has helped me to create presentations and help in speaking to crowds. Every one of us has created a team spirit with each other and I feel that we could push each other through anything. I am looking forward to continuing for the next 2 years with the JET and Blue Skies. How lucky am I!”, Hayden proclaimed. Nellie was delighted too. By Debbie Corney

Chip Shop Challenge 2017 Calling all chippies – Julia’s House needs you!
The Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity is appealing for Dorset chip shop owners to sign up for their 2017 Chip Shop Challenge and donate 5p from every portion of chips sold in August to support families with a life-limited child.

The annual campaign has proved very popular with both chip shops and customers, with many posting selfies in support of the challenge on the Julia’s House Facebook page.
Julia’s House cares for children who may not live into adulthood, providing practical and emotional support through frequent short breaks for mums and dads and social opportunities for the whole family.
Every chip shop that signs up will receive a fundraising pack including a poster and information about the charity to show their customers what they are doing and how they are supporting Julia’s House.

Sting in the Tale Seeks Trustees and Volunteers Sting in the Tale, a festival of stories, has been delivering epic tales, family friendly shows, historic storywalks, and more than a touch of magic, for well over a decade. Now, to keep the stories flowing, Sting in the needs enthusiastic people to step forward as Trustees to help develop and manage the organisation. People with a variety of backgrounds and a range of skills and expertise are being sought, in particular those with financial, legal, marketing, event management or business experience. Currently a not for profit organisation Sting in the Tale promotes the traditional art of oral storytelling, together with other performance and creative art forms, bringing entertaining and informative events to people of all

On Your Plot Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgette at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of time to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter.

• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!

Tastes so good... Risotto
Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?
Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)
1. Heat some oil in a pan. 2. Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic 3. Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened. 4. Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes. 5. Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish. 6. Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. 7. Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

All-New Peugeot 3008 SUV GT Line By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
It is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac.
The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
