BY MICA BALE Although it may be difficult to ignore the current situation and the challenges it presents, Dorset as a beautiful coastal county still has much to offer, whether that be in the form of holidaying at home or rediscovering old favourites or even a few hidden gems. From important conservation work to an impressive museum and art gallery in Bournemouth, here is another handful of five facts from around our beautiful county.
Did you know? It is believed that it was the monks of a certain Benedictine priory at Loders who first introduced cidermaking to Dorset in the 12th century? Certainly, Dorset has made good use of this skill and there are many local award-winning cider producers throughout the county.
A fascinating visitor attraction Dorset has to offer is the Russell-Cotes Museum in Bournemouth which was originally an intricately designed house commissioned by Sir Merton Russell-Cotes, Mayor of Bournemouth as a special present for his wife. Several years later however, they decided to open the house and displayed many of their amazing artefacts to the town whilst still residing at the house. This generous gift and decision to share their home with the town has been a magnet to art, curio and history lovers from all over the county.
Have you visited the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park? Located at Verwood, the Heavy Horse Farm works to preserve some of Britain’s rarest horse breeds, including the critically endangered Suffolk Punch as well as Shire horses, Percherons, Ardennes and Clydesdales. These gentle giants have been a part of the landscape throughout Britain for centuries, helping to transport people and goods and even to farm the land. Although now many of these breeds are suffering from critically low numbers, the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park is joining in efforts to preserve these breeds for future generations and has even welcomed several new arrivals. From an extensive history that begins with William Conqueror it would be perhaps difficult to choose just one moment from the history of Corfe Castle that stands above its exciting heritage. One of the most remarkable stories that comes from this Dorset stronghold must surely be that of Lady Mary Bankes whose prowess and determination saw her defend her home against a mighty siege by Parliamentary forces. Perhaps what made this so particularly impressive was that when the siege began, she had just five men with her to stand against several hundred soldiers!
Did you know? The surgeon credited with saving the life of King Edward VII and also renowned for his companionship with 'Elephant Man' Joseph Merrick, was a local of Dorset? Born in Dorchester, the renowned surgeon gained widespread acknowledgement following his successful treatment of appendicitis reportedly saving the future king’s life before his coronation by accurately diagnosing appendicitis and operating on the monarch reportedly on a table in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace!

VJ DAY August 15th 1945 75 years
August 15th marked Victory over Japan Day – the end of all hostilities in the Second World War. While peace arrived in Europe in May 1945, those fighting in the Far East continued until Japan’s surrender in the wake of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. To start the tribute by West Moors Town Council, prayers and introductions were read by Rev Andy Muckle St Mary’s Church, West Moors, just before 11am. The National moment of Remembrance with a twominute silence followed. Vice Chairman of the Council, Cllr Alex Clarke, then laid a commemorative wreath on the War Memorial. The CRY FOR
PEACE AROUND THE WORLD was performed at 11.10am by the West Moors Town Crier, Iain Mitchell. Disappointingly, the council could not organise a public gathering or service, due to Covid-19. We hope you all managed to join in with the marking of this date safely whilst following the Government social distancing guidelines. Talking about Wildlife...
The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. Rick Stein’s charity lunch raises £3,100 for local hospice Forest Holme Hospice celebrated receiving a donation of £3,100 from Rick Stein’s restaurant in Sandbanks, which they raised through a special charity initiative earlier this year before lockdown. The popular seafood restaurant organised a special three course charity lunch during January with a percentage of each meal going to the Poole-based charity. The money will help fund the provision of end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. Due to the effects of the
Covid-19 pandemic, the charity is expected to have an estimated deficit of over £350,000 this financial year. Paul Tucker, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Forest Holme said, “We were so pleased to have been chosen by the restaurant and absolutely thrilled with the amount raised. Rick Stein’s have previously supported us with a Coffee Morning and we want to thank all their amazing staff and customers for their support and generosity. This money will make a big difference to local people who need our care and support at the most difficult time of their lives.”

Congratulations to the students of Ferndown Upper School for their outstanding examination achievements. After receiving the highest Sixth Form results in Dorset for the last three years (combined A Level and Applied General value added scores), our students have achieved another excellent set of results. 50% of students received the top grades of A*, A & B and with over 99% of students passing. It is therefore of no surprise that some students who have done extremely well (please see the list at the bottom of the page). However the most pleasing aspect was that all of our students achieved to their full potential. • The school is very pleased with the results for its STEM subjects, particularly Mathematics, where 50% of students achieved the highest grades of A* and A, and in Further Maths were 100% of the students achieved A* or A. • The Creative Arts results were again superb, with the highlight being 100% A*to B for Textiles and Music and 2/3’s of the Fine Art students receiving A* or A. • Other standout subjects were History, Sociology and Religious Studies where again 2/3’s of the

After a very challenging and uncertain year, Ferndown Upper students received their long awaited GCSE exam results. Last year Ferndown students received the best results in Dorset and this year the students performed even higher. A lot of the vocational results are still to be released and these are expected next week but it is anticipated that they will be equally as good. • 83% of students gained grades 9-4, • 64% of students gained grades 9-5 and • 67 of the grades that were awarded were the highest possible grade 9. Other high achieving subjects were: Computer Science, Ethics, Art, Textiles, Design, French, Spanish, Photography and PE. Other headline figures are an Attainment 8 score of 51 points, which means the average grade awarded across all subjects was a grade 5, (an old B grade). Headteacher, Philip Jones commented, “I am very proud of the achievements of our students; it has been an extremely difficult and challenging year for them and they have risen to this challenge superbly, may I take this opportunity

STAR GAZING Welcome to the September Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of events are viewable just by stepping outside on a cloudless night and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point e.g. a clear view to the west. Occasionally, viewings will benefit from the use of binoculars or a small telescope if available, but all can be enjoyed without either. International Space Station The International Space Station (ISS) is usually visible at some point during the night, and throughout September there are a number of good opportunities to spot it. At around 9.15p.m. on the 17th, 19th and 21st, the ISS will be visible rising in the southwest. Then around the same time on the 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th the rising point changes to the west. Please note timings are subject to change, therefore I recommend visiting www.heavens-above.com for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to Bournemouth. Events The Autumn Equinox occurs just after 2.30p.m. on 22nd September. The term equinox is derived from the Latin for ‘equal night’, and it is around this time of year that daytime and night time are of equal length, no matter where you are on Earth. September 5th marks the 43rd anniversary of the launch of Voyager 1. Its main objective was to study and photograph Jupiter, Saturn and Saturn’s moon, Titan. However, it didn’t stop there, and today the probe is now the most distant man-made object from Earth. It is still communicating with NASA even though it is a staggering 14,000,000,000 miles from home, and all being well it will continue to relay data until 2025 when it will run out of power. Mercury The closest planet to the Sun is hidden in its glare this month. Venus Best seen around 5a.m. before the sun rises, Venus is dazzling brightly in the east. Mars The red planet is rising around 8.30p.m. and is visible high in the south throughout the night. Mars will be best placed to view in October. Saturn & Jupiter It’s not too late to track down the two gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn. Located low towards the south, both planets benefit from being viewed through a good pair of (steady) binoculars or a small telescope, and the pair are joined by the Moon on 25th September to make a pleasing triangle (see figure). As mentioned in last month’s Stargazing Page, summer through to winter is a great time to spot the ‘Summer Triangle’ asterism. An asterism is a group of stars which make a recognisable shape or pattern but do not form an official constellation, such as the Plough, which is actually part of the large constellation Ursa Major (The Great Bear). The Summer Triangle asterism consists of the three brightest stars from three differing constellations – Deneb in Cygnus the Swan, Altair in Aquila the Eagle, and Vega in Lyra the Harp (Interesting fact: In 12,000 years Vega will be our Pole Star). Under dark skies away from light pollution, there is a great opportunity to see the central band of our Milky Way galaxy, which runs straight through the centre of the Summer Triangle (see figure). A pair of binoculars trained on this part of the sky will highlight the numerous star clusters and fuzzy patches of nebulosity found along the galactic plane. Moon This month’s full moon on 2nd September is traditionally known as the Full Corn Moon to some Native American tribes, as it coincides with the time of year when it is time to harvest corn. September’s full moon also goes by the names Barley Moon, Leaf Moon and “When the deer paw the earth” Moon, most notably by the Omaha Peoples. Deneb Saturn

Understanding Investments: Passive vs Active Investing
With interest rates at all time lows, and by all commentary likely to remain there for several years, savers require solutions other than cash to enable their money to retain its real value (after inflation). Investing becomes a necessity rather than a luxury. I’ve written about how to select the right level of risk through multi-asset funds and how to then control that risk on an ongoing basis through ongoing investment management. Now I will briefly explain two different methods of investment management; passive and active. Active Investment Management: The aim is to beat the return from a particular index or benchmark (eg FTSE 100). Fund managers seek to do this by using their knowledge and skill to analyse the market. They then buy shares, bonds or property which they believe are presently undervalued and so have the potential to increase in price over time. The managers utilise in-depth research to find hidden value. Passive Investment Management: A passive fund replicates a specific index via computer driven programmes to offer a diversified spread of investments in a specific market. There is no research to endeavour to beat the market, but because the fund is replicating an index, there should be no underperformance of the market. Should you invest in active or passive investments? Comparing the two approaches, charges will be higher with an active manager, due to the necessary research and analysis but a good fund manager/fund can significantly outperform the index, even after the higher charges. The risk is that they may not, and you’ve still paid more for the service.
Passive investing is low cost, so each and every year you pay less in charges but still Howard Goodship get the benefit of a diversified investment portfolio. As an investor, the saving in charges remain in your pocket and over time these can be substantial. However, the risk is that if the index falls or remains level, your fund will follow and is unable to outperform. In conclusion, there is no right or wrong approach. In fact, I often advocate a combination of the two for my clients with a percentage of their investments benefitting from lower charges in the passive solutions and a percentage of their investments benefitting from high quality, active management. This adds further diversification and in combination with investing into multiasset portfolios which are rebalanced on an ongoing basis, reduces the overall risk to my client’s portfolios. To finish where I started, with bank and building society rates at all time lows, inflation will erode the value of savings over time. For many people, investing is now a necessity for their long- term money (5 years plus) to help preserve and even enhance their lifestyle in retirement. As the author says, the characters “are all different, like us, and each has their own weaknesses. I can see myself in all four of them, perhaps you can too.” Personally, I challenge anyone to read it and not feel at least a tiny bit lighter, more hopeful and more connected to those around us. A Street Cat Named Bob – James Bowen James had very little to give when he found an injured stray cat. A recovering drugaddict, James was living in sheltered accommodation and busking to earn enough money to eat. But it turned out that taking in the ginger cat, which he named Bob, would change James’ life. This true story is a few years old now, and you could just choose to watch the film adaptation. But if you want to curl up with a feel-good story full of hope, resilience and friendship, it won’t disappoint. Staying Alive: real poems for unreal times – Neil Astley The five hundred poems in this anthology cover a wide range of subjects, from depression and death to joy, personal quests and self-discoveries. The loss of complete freedom to travel didn’t stop us from planning ahead. This year brought unprecedented changes to our freedom to travel as we wish. However, we can now turn our attention to what we’ll do with the relaxation of lockdown. With that in mind, here are a few road trip ideas for Brits dreaming of indulging their wanderlust. With hills, lake and forests, the Lake District is steeped in history and there’s something for everyone.
Scottish Highlands The Scottish Highlands are famous for their endless rolling hills and otherworldly mountainous landscapes, including Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest peak. Renting a car at Glasgow airport for the drive to Fort William lets you take in the gorgeous Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Snowdonia It’s a similar story in Wales, with epic scenery along with some of the most exciting roads in the UK. Keen drivers should try to take in the roads around Bala. About an hour north, Anglesey offers more picturesque views and some fantastic ocean drives. Lake District Climb Scafell Pike along with Snowdon and Ben Nevis and you’ve completed the Three Peaks Challenge – climbing the tallest spots in Scotland, Wales and England.
Wild Atlantic Way The 1,500 mile Wild Atlantic Way is a tourism trail on the west coast of Ireland. Unless you have three or four weeks to spare it’s probably best to pick the section that appeals most rather than cram it all into a week or two. There’s plenty to see, with highlights such as the Skellig Islands, the Dingle Peninsula, the Cliffs of Moher and Killary Harbour. Nurburgring Nurburgring is known as The Green Hell, with the formidable circuit winding through the beautiful Eifel forest for a ludicrous 12.9-mile stretch. It’s open to the public or it’s free to park up by the track and watch others have a go, or perhaps take in one of the official races. Route Napoleon Loosely following the route taken by Napoleon in his 1815 escape from Elba to Grenoble in France, this is a 200-mile stretch of twisting tarmac close to the Alps with breathtaking scenery. The roads are largely wellsighted, meaning you can enjoy driving without being concerned that other vehicles could appear out of nowhere. Stelvio Pass The Stelvio Pass is situated
in northern Italy close to the Swiss border. It’s ideal for hairpin fans because this mountain pass snakes its way down steep Alpine mountains via seemingly endless switchbacks. There can be no arguments that the Stelvio Pass is pure bucket list material. Trollstigen Driving in Norway is a unique experience, with scenic fjords, mountains resulting in fun-todrive roads and some of the world’s longest road tunnels. The main attraction is Trollstigen (Trolls’ Path), which features a steep incline of ten per cent with eleven hairpin bends and waterfalls cascading down the roadside rocks. Just remember to go in summer, because it’s closed during winter.
Bruges Bruges might seem like an outlier in this list but is the perfect city break location, and is just 90 minutes from Calais. The ideal choice for a weekend away in Europe!

The Dorset Publications Camper Van For anyone new to these pages, Daichi, The Dashing Dude is our beloved Campervan. He is fun loving and adventurous and passionate about steering us to new places, to take us out as a family, exploring the coast and the countryside. He loves England and drove all the way from Japan to be with us, where he had a new suit fitted including fridge, cupboards, table, bed and a great new roof that lifts perfectly, giving us plenty of headroom inside. This month he was shaking with excitement. Daichi had heard of the ‘Mummy’s Curse’, so when Stephen’s sister suggested we meet at Beacon Hill and celebrate Grandpa’s Birthday with a walk and a picnic, Daichi (and us)
The grave of the 5th Earl of Carnavon
Socially distanced group selfie... complete with lockdown hair! was raring to go. Beacon Hill, near the village of Burghclere and overlooking the glorious Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey, houses the grave of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who died in 1923. Highclere Castle has belonged to this family since 1679. The 5th Earl, an enthusiastic Egyptologist, is famous for his sponsorship which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Howard Carter exposed the tomb which had lain silent for nearly 3000 years and was adorned with rich Egyptian artifacts. Carnarvon must have been delighted after years of donating, but the story goes that on arriving in Cairo he was fatally bitten by a mosquito, which became infected following a razer cut. Carnarvon died of blood poisoning. Thus started the famous and chilling tale of “The Mummy’s Curse” which has enraptured many a movie since. What do you think? To be fair Howard Carter lived until 1939 and died at the age of 64, but we rather like a good, scary tale. Daichi whole heartedly believes it. He loves those movies too!

39 Beacon Hill itself is pretty steep. Daichi took one look and gracefully declined, deciding he was better suited to the car park. I was pleased that during the Lockdown we had done many a walk around the forest, which meant I was much fitter than usual. Stephen’s sister and father are very keen walkers and Hayden and Stephen are far fitter than me. It is quite a hill. As the weather was dry it meant the ground was good for walking, but I would not recommend this on a wet day. The views are stunning. Glorious rolling hills, trees, blue sky and white / grey folded clouds. You can’t beat an English panoramic landscape. It inspires the soul. We did stop a couple of times to catch our breath. Looking at the views was indeed a good excuse! We must have passed Beacon Hill on the A34 hundreds of times and had never thought to stop and look, let alone climb to the top. The hill is 261 metres high. My fit bit watch told me that I had climbed the equivalent of 37 flights of stairs. Not bad for my day’s exercise. The hill is actually the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort, allegedly built in 1000 BC, housing 2000-3000 people. It is good to stand and imagine what it would have been like all

Going down was far easier... those years ago and what families would have been doing and creating then. How times have changed. Now with all our gadgets, cars, machines… and then with sickles, pruning hooks, ploughs and iron axes. It was a pretty violent time too, so maybe there are benefits to our more modern age. All food for thought. Talking of which, the picnic at the foot of the hill on the two conveniently placed picnic tables, provided wellearned refreshments. Rachel had baked some delicious sausage rolls as well as cupcakes, so we were very well catered for. A harmonious rendition (that maybe a bit generous) of “Happy Birthday” to Grandpa signalled the close of a wonderful walk. Daichi had kept the food perfectly cool in his little fridge… he also looked rather cool and contented with himself as we drove away all smiles. I wonder if there were any ‘Mummies’ lurking in the trees, watching us? Before driving all the way home, we did stop off at Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey. It was open! That is a trip for another day. Daichi loves Downton, so there is a good chance he will take us. Will that be next month, or somewhere else? You will see… By Debbie Corney

Beauty Boosts By Kate Duggan
The benefits of retinol are widely known. It’s one of the best ingredients for tackling fine lines and sun damage, boosting collagen production and generally making skin look healthier and fresher. If you’re new to using retinol, Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal products are a great place to start. As with everything from this brand, you know you’re getting skincare that’s the result of months (if not years) of research and has been scientifically proven to work. The eye cream has only been out for a few months but is already getting rave reviews. It feels lovely to apply and it’s safe to say that I agree with the 93% of testers who’ve seen a reduction in lines and wrinkles. It’s £70 at www.murad.co.uk.
Hand sanitisers are certainly handy, but they can also be very drying – leading to sore, cracked skin. Green People’s new Deep Cleaning Hand Foam (£11.50, www.greenpeople.co.uk) is a good alternative. It’s free from alcohol and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), so it won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. It’s even gentle enough for sensitive skin. It’s over 90% organic, and the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties mainly come from essential oils, including tea tree. And, even better, it’s a dual-purpose foam. You can use it as a hand sanitiser when you’re out and about, and a foaming hand wash back at home.
Looking for a more wallet-friendly retinol? Dermaworks’ Retinol Night Serum (www.dermaworks.co.uk) is incredibly good value at just £14.95. It’s 2.5% retinol (most high-street retinol serums are only 1%) and it’s packed with other ingredients that your skin will love, including moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid. It’s also vegan, 100% natural and cruelty-free. Over time, it’ll help to repair cells and improve skin texture. For best results, you’ll want to use it for a few months, although you should still see some benefits pretty quickly. My skin feels noticeably softer the morning after using it. And, unlike a lot of other serums I’ve tried, this one doesn’t feel greasy or sticky.
It won’t be long until the weather starts cooling down, but in the meantime we’re still in for a few hot, sticky days. If you’re struggling with the heat, a face mist can help, but they’re often little more than water with a splash of artificial perfume. I tend to use an organic rosewater (£12, www.akamuti.co.uk) instead. If you decant it into an old spray bottle, you can use rosewater as a face mist, toner or cooling spritz. As well as helping to beat hot weather (or in my case hot flushes), rosewater is great for your skin – boosting moisture and leaving skin feeling calmer and softer. It also smells gorgeous. I’m planning to carry on using it throughout autumn and winter to counteract the drying effects of central heating.

Dorset charity launches cashless collection pot options Dorset’s disability charity, Diverse Abilities, has launched cashless options for its collection pots amid a year when fundraising revenue is down. The collection pots now each feature their own personal QR codes and text codes to enable customers to donate without the need for physical cash. Each pot also has its own poster that can be displayed instead if counter space is tight with screens in place. Collection pots can typically hold around £45, income that makes a big difference to smaller local charities. Emma Bovey, fundraising
manager at Diverse Abilities, commented: “Prior to the pandemic, we saw a decline in cash donations, so this has really given us a kick to look at other ways of connecting with supporters old and new. On Your Plot Herb Gardens
Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course!

• If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. • Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. • Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. • Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. • Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes. Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an
attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. Most types of herb can be raised from seed, but for a quicker start browse the farmers market, garden centre, or even car boot sales for plants that are ready to go. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

Dolphin Shopping Centre distributes hundreds of vouchers to celebrate 50th anniversary Over 200 shoppers have been rewarded with money-off vouchers to spend at the Dolphin Shopping Centre as part of its milestone birthday celebrations this year. In July last year, the centre invited shoppers to write a postcard to their future selves, posting it in the centre’s Snail Mailbox, in return for a £5 shopping voucher. Six-year-old Imogen Jones was one of many who sent a carefully crafted postcard last year while visiting Dorset with her family. Imogen said: “I kept asking mummy about the card - I was so excited that it was coming. I’d drawn deckchairs with hearts on them to remind myself of the fun I had on holiday. I think I asked mummy about the postcard 39 times after I posted it, and then one morning it came through the letterbox!” Imogen made the 70-mile trip back to Dorset when she received her postcard a few weeks ago, where centre management presented her with a voucher. Commenting on the whole experience Imogen asked: “Can we do another one so I can come back next year?” Imogen Jones
Abigail Jones, Imogen’s mum, said: “It seems like just yesterday that we arrived at the centre. Imogen has been so excited about the postcard ever since our trip to Dorset, so it was wonderful to see her reaction when it arrived. It’s certainly been a real highlight of our year.” Centre Manager, John Grinnell said: “Imogen has certainly been hot on our heels since posting her card back at our 50th birthday anniversary party. She was first in line to come and collect her voucher, which she assures us will be spent on something nice for herself.” “We love how much of a strong community we have at the centre, as the shoppers really make it what it is today. Here’s to the next 50 years!” The centre, which officially opened its doors on 1st July 1969, has also added to its birthday festivities by hosting a series of events including a giant pass the parcel, a parade of life-size walking birthday cakes and a brief return of the centre’s iconic wooden animals. The Dolphin Shopping Centre is currently open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 6.30pm, and Sundays from 10am to 5.30pm. Elderly and vulnerable customers are encouraged to shop between the hours of 9am to 10am, whilst NHS and key workers will be given priority between 4.30pm to 5.30pm. Each retailers’ specific opening times are available on their website.

Tastes so good... Chewy Breakfast Bar
A delicious, chewy bar that’s packed full of dried fruits and nuts that’s perfect to be served as breakfast, or a lunchbox treat
Ingredients for 8 servings 1 cup almond butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup almond milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2.5 cups rolled oats 1 cup rice cereal 1/2 cup chopped almonds 1/2 cup sultanas 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate plus 1/4 cup melted to finish

Preheat the oven to 325f/160c Line a square baking tin (8x8in) with baking parchment. Spray a little coconut oil in first to help secure the paper.

Mix the wet ingredients into a large bowl making sure the almond butter is fully combined.

Add the dry ingredients and stir well.
5.
Spoon the mixture into your tin and press down well with your spatula.
6.
Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
7.
Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes then drizzle with dark chocolate.
8.
Pop in the fridge to ensure the chocolate is solid.
9.
You can store each slice in the freezer once wrapped in foil for up to three months or 1 week in the fridge.
