Understanding Hearing Loss The ear is made up of three parts. The outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sound is received by the outer ear and is channelled through the ear canal to the ear drum and the middle ear. The sound causes the ear drum to vibrate and results in the tiny bones in the middle ear tapping against each other, this vibration is transferred to the 30,000 tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Types of hearing loss 1. Conductive hearing loss: sound is blocked in the outer or middle ear. Apprentice / Vocational Training Fund In recognition of the difficulties often faced by young people entering into apprenticeships or vocational training schemes, particularly in terms of costs incurred during that training, West Moors Parish Council have reserved funds to support residents of West Moors aged between 16 and 20 years to assist them with purchase of related tools and equipment essential to their training. The parish council feel that many young people need support and that this fund will help to create a bond between young people and the local community and instil a sense of pride on both sides. It also tries to ensure that every young person has the same opportunities to benefit from a vocational training course or apprenticeship. Since July 2016, two grants have been awarded to residents of West Moors, Ben Watts and Charlie Hewitt, who have both used the grant to purchase tools essential to their training. The most recent winner to receive £250 was Mr Liam Griffin who is embarking on a career in the plumbing industry. Liam was presented with his cheque on Thursday 23rd August by the parish council chairman Councillor Mike Hawkes. Cllr Hawkes said ‘It was a pleasure to contribute towards Liam’s journey and we wish him success for the future.’ The opportunity to receive this grant is still available. We would love to hear
from you and help you on your way with your career.

Talking about Wildlife... Red Squirrel Adoptions Red Squirrels are in need of help, so this autumn, treat yourself or a loved one to a special wildlife gift with a Dorset Wildlife Trust wildlife adoption. This time of year, the red squirrel can be seen scurrying around the woodland floor collecting nuts for winter and jumping between trees on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, Dorset. The popular red squirrel, a native species, has been in decline for many years, but Brownsea Island, owned by the National Trust, is proud to give a home to a population of 200 of these enchanting creatures. The island is one of the few safe havens for the reds in the South West. They can be seen by visitors for most of the year but are particularly active during the autumn as they prepare for winter. to make a daytrip to the beautiful nature reserve, managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) on Brownsea Island. to your legal questions
We are first time buyers and have just got our mortgage agreed and found a place to buy! We’re keen to move in asap so what can we
expect and how long does the conveyancing process take? Buying your first home is such an exciting time but can also be very daunting as you enter the unknown of the conveyancing process! Once you have found the property you want to buy, it’s a good idea to contact your local Solicitor to get a quotation for the legal fees and disbursements so that you can plan your budget in advance and also obtain appropriate advice regarding a mortgage to finance your purchase. Your Solicitor will send to you various forms for completion and you will likely be asked for supporting documents like ID etc. and money on account. Make sure you return all the forms completed along with the other items requested promptly so that as soon as the papers arrive from the Seller’s Solicitor, work can begin. Your mortgage offer should be issued once the valuation has been carried out and searches will also need to be applied for in respect of the property.
We would also recommend that you instruct a surveyor to carry out a survey of the property. At this stage, your Solicitor will raise legal enquiries with the Seller’s Solicitor and you should have the opportunity to address any concerns you have as well. Once all investigations and searches have been completed, and any enquiries raised about the property satisfied you will be fully reported to and then you should be invited to sign the documentation in respect of the transaction. You will also usually need to ensure you have adequate Buildings Insurance in place. At this stage you should then be ready to
‘exchange contracts’ and this is the point of ‘no return’! The completion date is fixed on exchange and you can start packing! The day of completion is when the monies are actually paid over to your Seller’s solicitor and the legal title to the property is transferred to you. Once completion has taken place you should receive a tele-
phone call from you solicitor with the exciting news that you can finally get your hands on the keys to your new house! For further information please contact a member of the

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm. Our lunches are cooked by a company and brought to us, the meals are then served by our helpers. We have been lucky to enjoy lovely lunches so far but have had to change suppliers in September, hopefully they will be as good if not better. Having settled back after the summer break we continued our musical entertainment theme by enjoying a visit by a Ukelele group in September. We look forward to Ali and Music for Health and Simon, Mr. Piano Man, during October and more of our favourites before Christmas.

West Moors Library News & Events NEW – Computer help every Thursday afternoon and every other Friday morning. Whatever your problem the Digital Champions will try to help. Booking not always required but preferred.
We are now classed as a Hub for Dorset Armed Forces Covenant Programme. It is estimated that there are 51,000 veterans living in Dorset with several armed forces bases. The purpose is to roll out support and information to local military personnel (current and former) and their families and to improve their access to appropriate advice and information working alongside Dorset Health Care using the library as a focal point. BorrowBox - You can now borrow free audio books online or with our library app. Online from the library website you can log into BorrowBox or download the BorrowBox app. Search, browse and discover our great collection 24/7 by title, author or category, listen to excerpts.

Code Club – We still have spaces on the 11.15-12.15 session where children ages 9 – 11 learn how to create codes using Scratch. It is run by a Digital Champion volunteer and takes place once a month on a Saturday morning. October 23rd half term week – We have a story and craft session from 3 – 4pm run by the Urban Heath team. This is always very popular and you will need to book a place. Suitable for ages 5 – 11yrs. Can we just remind you that we accept donations of books in good condition less than 5 years old for use in our library – this is a good way to increase the range of titles we can offer and we very much appreciate all that we have received over the last few months.
Housebound deliveries – Residents who find it difficult to get into the library especially as the days get shorter and colder can join one of our housebound rounds. Books and audio books either on tape or cd can be borrowed as well as large print format books. Books are delivered once every 3 weeks with a choice of Tuesday afternoon or Friday morning delivery

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Hayden went to see Nellie, The Dorset Publications Campervan who had an accident a few months ago. She is now at the Old Van’s Home and like all good Grandparents she was keen to find out what her 14 year old ‘grandson’ had been up to over the summer. Hayden was very excited to tell her… “Well Nellie, I got to interview Red 10 at the Bournemouth Air Show!” He exclaimed with a big grin, nearly as big as Nellie’s silver shine. “I got to do this because I was asked by the Blue Skies Team. Blue Skies is a programme to help young people with their communication and leadership skills organised by the Jon Egging Trust. The Blue Skies Programme has helped me build up my confidence.” Hayden continued, “Before I was shy in asking people things, but now I have more self-confidence to talk to people: even those I don’t know, like Red 10!” The interview went like this… Hayden - What is your role within the Red Arrows Team? Adam (Red 10) - I’m the supervisor of the team. In the winter workout period I am the supervisor of the practices, looking at the display patterns and liaising with the authorities about the displays we are putting together. During the summer display season, I

Hayden and Squadron Leader Adam Collins am on the road with the team flying the spare aircraft and then supervising the displays and commentating about the displays. Hayden - What motivated you to work with the Red Arrows? Adam - It’s a unique opportunity and a unique job that when the opportunity came to apply for it, I couldn’t really turn it down. When the Red 10 job came up it was something that really appealed to me. That is why I am doing it. Hayden - What’s the best thing about being a Red Arrow? Adam - It is such a variety of things that we do. We have had such good weather this year, so we have done lots of full shows. I love meeting the public (like you to be honest) and the commentary. It is an honour to be the face of the RAF and also representing Great Britain when we go overseas. It is a unique job. Hayden - What is most challenging thing about being a Red? Adam - The variety, as we are constantly going from one thing to another. This weekend for example we have 5 or 6 Displays up and down the country so we are on a very tight timeline between displays. We do PR and media bits in between and it is really finding that balance

39 to do everything to the standards that we expect of ourselves, being able to switch from task to task and then to focus on it. It is quite tiring, you just have to manage that carefully, but really the best bits are the hardest bits as well. It really is one of the roles that is unique, you are always working hard, but it is always rewarding. Hayden – What has been your favourite time with the team? Adam – This is my first season so the whole season for me has been amazing and I shadowed my previous predecessor for couple of months last season. But really going to events like this, it is the reaction of the crowd when the jets arrive, and we start the display. It is that feedback from the crowd that is the real buzz. Hayden - What would you say to someone aspiring to be a Red Arrow pilot? Adam - I’d say to them that we all started somewhere. One of the aims of our RAF 100 this year is to inspire the next generation and really with our Shows that is what we are trying to do. All of us at the Red Arrows were at school once. We went to college or university, we did exams, we were doing revision and that kind of thing and it really is a step by step approach to then join the Air Force and go through flying training and ultimately join the Red Arrows, so my message really would be just to work hard and take it one step at a time. We all made it, so there is no reason why anyone else can’t!
Hayden – For my last question, what would you say to a young person who is struggling, to be the best they can be? Adam – Really it is that message that we have all started somewhere, we have all struggled at some point, be it through school or through education or going along through training and flying training. Keep persevering, take it one step at a time and all of sudden through struggling through something it becomes a great success. You are not going to get there instantly, so it is just working your way through it and having the right attitude, working hard and then eventually you will get there. Thank you. Great to meet you! Hayden turned back to Nellie, “Once I interviewed Red 10, I then got interviewed on the interview, by Bournemouth Air TV! It was quite a surprise. It made me really use all the skills I have learned from Blue Skies and I think I did ok, considering I wasn’t warned! Finally, I also got to meet the rest of the Red Arrows and other display teams. “I even had my photo taken with the pretty Wingwalkers (Nellie raised her wiper), as well as the Tiger’s Parachute Display Team from the British Army, Sally B’s pilots, the stunt pilot Rich Goodwin, the Strikemaster Pair and the new Team Raven were all there. How exciting was all that!” Nellie was super impressed with Hayden’s recitings and she hopes you had a great summer too! By Debbie Corney

Mini Print Exhibition in Swanage Over 500 mini works of fabulous, affordable and original art by more than 150 printmaker artists are on display in a mini print exhibition not to be missed. The vast range of inspiration, subject, technique, style and price is astounding and indeed the only theme running through this exhibition is the size of each of the works; just 10cm x 10cm. All works are for sale and the prices range from £25 - £300. Curated and presented in the most ingenious and yet simple format, it’s little wonder that in just its third year that organisers Red Dot Art has embarked on a UK wide tour visiting galleries in East Anglia, The Cotswold, Leeds and Oxford over a 6 month period from September 2018 to June 2019.

GUIDE Ponds
If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

Celtic Music Concerts in Ferndown Northern Ireland’s Maurice Dickson has been writing and performing his songs for almost 30 years. He has played in rock and blues bands around Belfast before forming his own band in 1976. Three years later he turned professional and continued to learn his trade in Europe and North Africa absorbing the cultures and the rhythms. Catherine Ashcroft plays the Uilleann Pipes and Whistles with breathtaking speed and virtuosity. Although born in the North West of England she has had a passion for Irish music since childhood and growing up in a musical home she started playing the whistle at an early age before getting her first set of Uilleann pipes in her mid teens. Self taught, Catherine regards her early influences as Planxty, The Bothy Band, Lunasa, and Paddy Keenan. Maurice and Catherine met in 2008 when Catherine recorded her first CD “Take Flight and Follow” at Maurice’s studio in Cumbria. This led to them collaborating and Maurice invited her to guest on his forthcoming European tour. A great success they soon formed the duo “Mochara”. Taking the name from the Irish meaning of “My Friend”. The pair have since performed at various festivals, folk clubs, theatres and music venues throughout the UK, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Norway. They have also released 3 albums, “In Your Blood” in 2010, “Spirits and Dreamers” in 2013 and more recently the fabulous “Live at the Island” in 2015. Performing a dynamic mix of original and traditional Irish songs and tunes, the duo promise audiences a night of spellbinding music and entertainment.

Calan bring together the remarkable talents of 5 young musicians giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music. With a contemporary and lively approach they breathe new life into the old traditions through their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and spirited and energetic performances of Welsh step dancing. Jean Ware Legacy Award 2018/19 LAST CHANCE TO APPLY! - Deadline is November 30th There is still time to apply for the Jean Ware Legacy Award 2018. West Moors Parish Council are urging people to apply now. This money is for you and we are here to help. In recognition of the commitment and hard work of the late Councillor Jean Ware the Parish Council renamed the Legacy Award in her memory in 2016. The award was set up in 2012 after The Olympics to inspire a generation. It is an award of up to ÂŁ1,000 for a young person aged between 11 and 17 years and who is a resident of West Moors. West Moors Parish Council would like to ensure that every young person has the same opportunities to develop their talents. Are you, or do you know of an aspiring young person with one or more excellent abilities. Do you or the nominated person need financial help with travelling, equipment and coaching or training costs? We would like to support applicants who excel in Sport, Design, Drama, Music, or The Arts. Even if you have won before, why not try again? What have you got to lose? Previous young residents of West Moors we have supported have
been, Abi Bedford, a netball player who won two years running in 2014 and 2015, Callum Crockard, an aspiring football coach in 2016 and most recently in 2017 was Charlotte Ayton, a long jumper. All were awarded with an engraved glass trophy which they will keep indefinitely to remind them of their achievements. The application process is very easy and forms can be downloaded from: www.westmoors-pc.gov.uk or collected from the parish office on 01202 861044.
