Dear Neighbours, Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We went down to the South Beach at Studland and had a great day out with some friends. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Stephen rowed me nearly out to Old Harry Rocks...well almost! It is very shallow over that way and ideal for the children so if you have not been, I highly recommend it. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The West Moors Directory we have some more local information from Martin Rowley...A Trip down Memory Line. There are also notices from the West Moors Arts Society, West Moors Flower Group and the West Moors Lunch Club, as well as data from Oakhurst School. Of course there are our very important trades and business people to call also. I generally think things are looking up — I deliberately don’t listen to the news — so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, the gutters need cleaning or do you need new washing machine? All the help you will find inside. A trip down memory line... In the 1840s the Duke of Wellington, not a lover of railways, fervently supported the building of the line that eventually ran through West Moors: his reasoning was simple - it would be a vital link running parallel to the south coast, which could be used to move troops swiftly in the event of an invasion of England. He could not have anticipated that the railway network that he advocated played a vital part in the support of operations in the reverse direction: the invasion of occupied France by Allied forces in June 1944. Fuel supply was key. Military vehicles involved in 'D-Day' needed a constant, reliable supply of fuel. The establishment of depots to achieve this was of the highest priority for the planning staffs. Six depots were established, from Devon in the west to Sussex in the east. Of these, West Moor s, cl ose to the cri tic al embarkation points was pivotal; failure here would have jeopardised the invasion. The US Army depot was rapidly constructed on the site of a smaller British ammunition & fuel facility on the former "Gundry's Inclosure". The Americans built big! Nearly 9 miles of railway sidings were

The old station, with the gatekeeper’s cottage just visible to right under bridge laid down and the network was connected to the SR main line just east of the station in February 1943. Why West Moors? It was ideal: the railway had maintained its dual running lines, enabling disruption to wartime traffic to be kept to a minimum and it had access to the line north to Salisbury, thence to the ports and refineries on the British west coast. Spare a thought for the railwaymen: several times per day trains with 50 or more fuel wagons would have to be shunted back and forth - propelled by engines containing a large, hot fire! Each wagon-load fed vast piles of 5-gallon jerricans, which were then loaded on lorries which daily crawled through the sleepy village of West Moors to reach the main road network, thence to offload points scattered across the 'Overlord' assembly area. West Moors Drama A long established and friendly amateur theatre group producing light comedy and mysteries at West Moors Memorial Hall twice yearly. The next production from West Moors Drama is “The Finish Line”, which will be performed on October 25th, 26th & 27th. Sir Humphrey Parmington and his sister Lady Gwendoline, the eccentric owners of Woodley Manor, are happily living in unsuspecting bliss as their stately family home crumbles around their ears, held together by their two remaining staff, the faithful Maisie and Cook. Younger, disgraced, sister Hester arrives on the scene with her art dealer friend Sebastian. Unfortunately they have ulterior motives for the visit. The arrival of ‘Humpy’s’ Olympian chums also adds confusion to the ensuing mayhem! A Russian ex Shot- putter with a taste for steroids, a retired gymnast with a taste for men and a fugitive German athlete on the run from the police! Mr Mcreedie arrives on the scene to inspect a troublesome cesspit but a case of mistaken identity finds him up to his neck in.....trouble! Things become even more addled than poor Sir Humphrey’s mind! Secrets and surprises abound. Will they ever find THE FINISH LINE? West Moors Drama meets on a Tuesday evening at the West Moors Memorial Hall when in rehearsals and also a Friday evening leading up to a performance. SPARKLE APPEAL GETS FAB SUPPORT Local charity The Sparkle Appeal, which raises mon ey for Poole’s Victoria Education Centre (VEC) for young, disabled people, is set to benefit from a Bournemouth boutique’s unique ‘Dress to Donate’ initiative. Fab Frocks of Westbourne, which has one of the largest selection of evening and cocktail dresses on the south coast, will be donating to the charity 10% of every full price dress sold to anyone attending the forthcoming ‘Touch of Sparkle’ Ball on Friday 26 October at the Italian Villa at Compton Acres in Poole. Fab Frocks will also be supporting the event with in-store promotions, an extremely sparkly Sparkle Ball window display plus a web and E-shot campaign. Tracie Beardsley, director of Fab Frocks said: “ We only launched the Dress to Donate initiative in September and we have already supported the children’s charity Julia’s House through our Dress to Donate scheme. We are delighted to now be supporting the Sparkle Appeal with their first ever ball.” Diana Newbury, Capital Appeals Manager for The Sparkle Appeal said: “All the children at VEC have to receive regular therapy and in order to truly realise their potential we urgently need to upgrade and renovate the physical facilities for their therapy. The Sparkle Appeal recently completed the fundraising for Phase 1 of our project, to raise £2.8m to build a new hydrotherapy pool. “Phase 2 will be officially launched at ‘A Touch of Sparkle’ Ball. A new state of the art Therapy Centre (at a cost of £1.2m) will bring together, under one roof,

WEST MOORS ART SOCIETY A Have you an interest in painting and drawing? Why not join the friendly group who meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings. You will be very welcome. A demonstration by a professional artist is enjoyed on the second Monday in each month with members, always happy to help each other, meeting for untutored workshops on all other Mondays. West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club welcomes over 60’s to a cooked lunch every Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua’s Church Hall, Pinehurst Road. Ebony, the 4 month old labrador cross, is a typical puppy and a very intelligent little girl. She is lucky enough to have found her ‘forever home’ and with that, Waggy Tails Rescue is proud to announce that it has now re-homed its 3000th animal. The vast majority of those helped have been dogs though there are a few kind volunteers who find homes for rabbits and guinea-pigs too. Sadly, the need for the charity to exist continues, and the number of dogs we can take in depends on how many foster places we have available. We also need to raise money to fund our work and this is done through street and store collections, special events and our three shops. Get into golf is a hit at Dorset mansion The Get into golf campaign scored a hit with weekend visitors to a National Trust mansion in Dorset. Over 500 people took the chance to try the sport when Kingston Lacy House, near Wimborne Minster, played host to the Dorset Golf Partnership and the Get into golf campaign. Visitors of all ages flocked to the stand on the south lawn to have a go at TriGolf, to hit balls in the blow-up net and to take on a putting challenge. Many of them have expressed an interest in follow-on coaching. The stand was run by Dee Wood, the Dorset county development officer, who said: “It was a brilliant weekend and, for many of the people who took part, it was their first introduction to golf. A great many of them have expressed interest in getting involved in the game.” Dee was supported by a host of volunteers including County Golf

Partnership chairman Bill Kennedy and lady members of the local Ashley Wood Golf Club. The club’s PGA professional, John Shimmons, and Steve ScottBowen, the PGA Tutor and Disabilities Tutor for the South West, both gave lessons and advice. Get into golf is a national campaign run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf partnerships, which work to grow the game. This event was the latest initiative with the National Trust. Get into golf events have also been hosted in Devon at Knightshayes Court. Golf has also been highlighted to National Trust managers and rangers as an ideal outdoor activity to stage in their grounds.

Memorial Hall Car Park The Trustees of the Memorial Hall charity have again this year decided to ask those using the Hall car park on the school run for St. Mary’s First School and Pre-school to make a payment of £10 to help cover the cost of maintaining this facility. This will cover parking for the whole school year for up to two cars per family. The scheme has the full support of both the police and the school as it helps to reduce the traffic congestion in the Avenue. Payment can be made at the school office or direct to the Hall. Please note that the Hall is a registered charity (No 217171) which is self supporting, and contrary to local belief receives no financial assistance from either the District or County Council.
