Dear Neighbours, Dare I say it but we are fast approaching that festive time of year… Indeed we are looking forward to taking our Hayden to see Father Christmas at Paultons Park for his Birthday this year. As he will be 9 I reckon this is my last chance! Imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I got a phone call from Father Christmas - it turned out to be a lovely local man who has played the part every season for over 60 years! I am sure I had that same ‘trip of the heart’ when he said who he was. Do we ever really grow up? As you might be thinking of opening your doors to the family… or escaping to other climes… perhaps a few things need doing around the house or garden? If you are anything like us, ‘spare’ time seems to be getting less and less. Why not let someone else do the work for you? A trip down memory line... The impact of the railway upon West Moors was small until the hamlet became, in 1866, the point where the line from Salisbury joined the then main line. Before this, staff were only required at the Crossing Lodge but a junction requires additional personnel to operate the points & associated signals. Control of the 'switch' was rudimentary. An elevated platform was provided for the 'pointsman' to see the approach of the train then he had to climb down to the ground and physically switch the blades of each point as required. In time, this developed into the familiar signal box operation once common on our railways. The staff in charge of these operations had to be trustworthy and intelligent. In rural areas, young men, who would otherwise have had to work on the land, sought employment in this role; two such were Thomas Larcombe & John Woolford; together they served the local railway through six decades. Thomas was born near Crewkerne, Somerset. In his early twenties, he came to West Moors as a railway gatekeeper, becoming one of the 'pointsmen' at the

new Junction. He married a girl from west Dorset who bore him 3 children; sadly his wife died at the early age of 27. Their children were taken in by other members of the family, leaving him alone. But not for long. In 1872, he married Mary Ann Woolford, a local farmer's daughter. She was 35, which at the time would have been thought 'advanced' for child-bearing, but she & Thomas produced three children - one of whom, Florence would later become one of the coal merchants in West Moors station yard and also the village's sub-postmistress! Mary Ann had an ambitious younger brother, John. He started work as a railway porter for the LSWR in Dorchester but had joined brother-in-law Thomas in the local signal-box by 1876. Thomas & John retired from faithful service early in the 20th century; they died within a year of each other; Thomas in May 1915 and John in November of the following year. As in their long working lives they 'keep watch' together, buried just a few yards apart in St. Mary's churchyard. Martin Rowley

Lucy’s recipe corner Choccy coconut balls Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together. Pour in the condensed milk. Ingredients for 5 servings 250g digestive biscuits 45g desiccated coconut (plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in) 5 tablespoons cocoa powder 1 tin condensed milk (397g)

Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut. Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set. Yum!

Pantomime season returns to the Bournemouth Pavilion from Saturday 8 December as we welcome Sleeping Beauty. This year’s offering is once again brought to you by UK Productions following a record-breaking production of Jack and the Beanstalk last year. Returning to once again write, direct and star is venue favourite and Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis as Happy Harry, whose local gags, rapport with the audience and range of impressions always go down a storm with adults and children alike. We’re also delighted to welcome back o n e o f t he be s t P a n to v i l l a i n s Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse. Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy. West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club welcomes over 60’s to a cooked lunch every Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua Church Hall, Pinehurst Road. An afternoon of entertainment or games follows the lunch then tea, cakes and bingo complete the day. Since September the members have enjoyed a Dorset Fire & Rescue safety talk, a group of ladies who ‘Sing for Pleasure’, learned about the Dorset Air Ambulance and a visit by Colin Fry who was one of the Olympic torch bearers. Raging hormones make stag Morris a threat to all males! Raging hormones and the call of Nature are making Morris the red deer stag at New Forest Wildlife Park extremely frisky. It’s the annual rutting season and Morris has been squaring up to all males, even his human male keepers and the massive European bison who share his enclosure. “He can’t think of anything else,” said New Forest Wildlife Park Animal Manager Jason Palmer. “He’ll do anything to protect his girls and even though he’s the only red deer stag in the park, he is still very aggressive to males of any other species. “His hormones are really raging and he’s stopped eating. He needs to prove himself, but he can’t fight other red deer stags, so he’ll have a go at anything else. He was eyeing me up and making threatening gestures the other day so we’ll have to keep away from him for the time being. We’ve also separated him from the bison to avoid any trouble.” The rutting season for red deer usually takes place for around three months, between October and January, depending on what part of the country the deer are located in. During the rut, or breeding season, red deer stags in the wild return to the hinds’ home ranges and compete for breeding access, squaring up to other male competitors in elaborate displays of dominance, including roaring and fighting. Whoever wins the fight becomes the

dominant stag and has exclusive access to the female hinds. The red deer normally share an enclosure and field with the park’s three male European bison, who are part of a captive breeding programme for endangered species. European bison used to be native to Britain and would normally cohabit with red deer in the wild. “Morris has nine hinds in his enclosure and he has no real competition, but he can’t help himself,” said Jason. “He has to use up the aggression and energy someh ow, so h e keep s b ellowin g constantly and adding long grass and twigs and moss to his antlers to make

In woodland populations, hinds over one year old usually give birth to a single calf* after an eight-month gestation period, between mid May to mid July each year. New Forest Wildlife Park has several species of otters, deer and owls, including the endangered giant otter, as well as lynx, foxes, wallabies, European bison, wolves, wild boar, ferrets, pine marten, polecats, harvest mice, badgers and more. The park is involved in international breeding programmes for endangered species and also works with the RSPCA to rescue injured or abandoned animals.

There are timed animal feeding sessions throughout the day, animal encounters on certain days and keeper talks about the amazing wildlife. The park is owned by Carol and Roger Heap, who are dedicated to wildlife conservation.
