Museum celebrates 70 years of fun and festivities in Dorset The new exhibition at the Museum of East Dorset celebrates seven decades of fun and festivities in the local area. Inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee year, the exhibition examines how local people have observed important local and national events since 1952. The exhibition, opening 4 April, will run until March next year. Celebrating local events Members of the community were invited to contribute to the exhibition by sharing stories, reminiscences, photographs and memorabilia. Celebrations include the Queen’s coronation and jubilees, local carnivals held at Wimborne and Verwood, ‘The Magpies’ (Wimborne Town FC) historic win in the FA Vase final in 1992, and how we marked the millennium. East Dorset towns and villages including Wimborne, Verwood, Witchampton and Shapwick have contributed photographs and artefacts. During 2022, the museum will celebrate other special events including 400 years of Dorset button making and the museum’s 60th birthday. The celebratory theme will be carried through to different parts of the museum, including the garden, the shop and the Tea Room. The museum’s Little Explorers activities over the

summer will include various themed events. Celebrating people Community organisations were invited to create celebratory pennants to represent their groups. These pennants will be displayed in the new exhibition after Easter. The museum has launched a ‘Celebrating Ourselves’ portrait competition inviting local school children to become a part of history and also feature in the exhibition. Children have been asked to create a portrait of themselves as their ‘best selves’ be they artists, scientists or Youtubers. There will be a winner from each age group (KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4) and portraits will be displayed in May. Celebrating nature Children will also be able to celebrate nature in the museum’s garden by creating ‘Andy Goldsworthy’ inspired pieces of art from a range of natural materials provided. They will be able to take pictures of their art and post them on social media. Chezzie Hollow, Museum Director, said: “This exhibition is very much inspired by, and created with, the local community. For the first time, visitors will be able to ‘experience’ different exhibition elements across the whole site as well as in the exhibition gallery. Interactive elements encourage people to share their own favourite celebration memories, try different scents to discover what a celebration smells like to them, and enjoy party hits from the past 70 years. The exhibition is family friendly and is a fantastic opportunity for all ages to experience the museum in a new way”. QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Have we reached May already? Yes, with the spring weather hopefully beckoning summer, what are your plans for the warmer months? Perhaps you are looking forward to enjoying some of the county’s greatest beauty spots. Parents and grandparents, where are you taking the kids to explore Dorset this year? Thankfully the holidays are still a few weeks off so why not sit down and whet your appetite for what the county has to offer with another handful of quirky facts?

Have you heard of Mary Lowndes? Chances are, if you have visited some of the local churches then you would have seen her work. A British stained-glass artist. Lowndes was born in Dorset, the daughter of a rector. She would go on to be an active member of the suffragette movement whilst also co-founding a stained glass company to which she gave her name. Alongside making a name for herself in a largely male-dominated world at that time, she founded the Artist’s Suffrage League, a special section of the Suffragette movement in which she would use her artistic skills to create posters, bills, banners and so on to illustrate the cause of the Suffragettes.

Did you know that the creator of a well known World Heritage Site also designed the beautiful Eastbury Park? Yes, located near Tarrant Gunville, the former mansion was created by Sir John Vanbrugh who is known for designing Blenheim Palace which now enjoys special status. Although most of the grand old mansion has not survived to today, the service wing is still intact and is preserved by Grade-I Listing. Certainly, if the remaining service wing is to be a judge, the house must have been palatial as was Sir Vanbrugh’s style. In fact, it was commented that the designs were ‘‘exceedingly large and possibly one of the heaviest piles of stone Sir John Vanburgh ever erected. 8

Did you know that it could well be that Daniel Dafoe’s famed Robinson Crusoe got his name thanks to an unusual event in Verwood? The author is best known for his fictional stories however his own story begins as a rebel soldier serving under the Duke of Monmouth. History books have documented well how the Duke tried to take the throne and thus started the Monmouth Rebellion, a cause which eventually died with the man himself. However, during his own personal crusade, the Duke landed in Dorset, along with his loyal soldiers including Daniel Dafoe. All did not run smoothly however and the Duke was uncovered despite attempts to preserve his identity. During the frantic attempt at escape, Daniel Dafoe is said to have taken refuge in the church yard, whereupon he uncovered the name of his hero, Robinson Crusoe!

Have you visited Captain Thomas Hardy’s Monument? No, not a memorial to the well-known author of a similar name, Capt. Thomas Hardy was a trusted Royal Navy Officer who served under Lord Nelson himself at the Battle of Trafalgar. Born in Dorset, Captain Hardy spent his boyhood in Portesham and would later return to the village he had always viewed with affection, as an older man. Captain Hardy was the captain of HMS Victory at Trafalgar and would be beside Nelson when the great Admiral was struck by the fatal blow. The Hardy Monument was designed to look like a spyglass, reminiscent of his seafaring heritage and can be seen on Black Down near Portesham.

Another impressive structure is Throop Mill. Amazingly, the mill has origins that are believed to date back to the time of William the Conqueror when a mill at Throop was mentioned as early as the 1086 Domesday Book. It is still debated as to whether the mill was in its current location from the 11th century however one thing is certain, the current mill dates back to the 19th century. Yes, Throop’s heart has been based around this hive of activity for generations, a facet which adds to this pretty village’s overall charm.

Dorset Wildlife Trust upgraded barn owl webcam is now live The barn owl webcam at the Lorton Meadows nature reserve near Weymouth is now live on the Dorset Wildlife Trust website giving wildlife lovers in Dorset and around the world the opportunity to tune in live at any time of day or night to follow the progress of a pair of resident barn owls nesting and raising their chicks. This year, viewers are able to watch the owls in colour and much higher definition thanks to the new upgraded webcam which was installed in the nesting box at the beginning of the season. Over the past few years, tens of thousands of viewers have followed the progress of the barn owls and witness firsthand their intriguing behaviours, including preening, mating and eating, and hear their characteristic chittering, screeching or hissing, all live via the webcam. With the breeding season now upon us, the pair have already produced four eggs and there may well be more to follow.Webcam followers can comment on the dedicated barn owl webcam facebook page @DWTBarnOwlWebCam to share what they’ve seen and help build a picture of how the pair are getting on. A great way for webcam viewers and wildlife lovers to help protect these majestic but declining birds in Dorset is to adopt a barn owl online through the Dorset Wildlife Trust website. The adoption pack includes a certificate of adoption and a fascinating sheet of barn owl facts, for just £15. The proceeds will help ensure barn owls across the county continue to benefit from good quality habitat, through Dorset Wildlife Trust’s conservation work on nature reserves and engagement with the local community and farmers. Barn owls hunt rodents such as voles, shrews and mice in rough grassland, but much of this habitat has been lost due to increased pressures on the countryside from

development and food production, contributing to their widespread decline. Emily Newton, Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Landowner Liaison Officer said: “The new upgraded webcam is giving us the opportunity to see the barn owls so much more clearly and it’s very exciting to be able to view this pair already settling into their nest. We are very much hoping that they will successfully breed this year - the rougher grassland fields at Lorton Meadows provide plentiful supplies of food such as field vole to help them to rear their young. Other rough grassland sites in Dorset will also support prey for the barn owls, in Dorset we work with farmers and advise them to manage grass margins and field corners to increase hunting habitat for species such as owls.” Our thanks go to to Wildlife Windows for installing and maintaining the new camera. Whether you like a little sparkle or a lot, it is a dynamic that will get you noticed, with now longer-lasting applications that are food and moisture resistant. Golden glow If colour isn’t your thing, you’ll be delighted to know that au naturel will also be a hot trend again this summer. For a youthful, dewy glow, start with a cream foundation and use a highlighter or bronzer to contour cheeks. Keep lips natural but finish with a dab of eye gloss – another must-have product for 2022. When you take it off This summer will test our skin in all the usual ways. When healthy

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The club meets on a Wednesday in St. Anthony’s Church Hall, Pinehurst Road from 11.15am until 3.30pm, anyone over the age of 60 living in West Moors is welcome to join. Last week a representative from Waitrose, Ringwood branch, came to present us with a cheque for money towards the lunch club funds. Since the Covid pandemic Waitrose branches are allocated a sum of money for charity and Ringwood branch shared their money between three causes falling within the Health and Wellbeing heading one of which was the Lunch Club. So, a big THANKYOU to Waitrose of Ringwood from the members and helpers. This month we all enjoyed the singing of Karen and as I write this, we are still looking forward to our Easter celebrations and to being entertained by Simon on the keyboard later in April. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to reduce inheritance tax and help protect their share from care fees The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Welcome to the May Stargazing Page. Highlights this month are mostly early morning events, including planetary conjunctions, a lunar eclipse, two meteor showers, and Mercury close to the Pleiades in the evening.

Moon

May’s full moon occurs on the 16th, and if the skies are clear, those of you awake from 3.30am to 4.30am will witness a total lunar eclipse in the southwest, where the Moon should go a reddish-brown colour.

International Space Station

The ISS can be spotted every day this month, with up to three overhead passes in one night. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavensabove.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Events

Two meteor showers occur this month. The Eta Aquarid shower peaks in the early hours on the night of 5 – 6th May, and is caused by debris from Halley’s Comet burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. It is best seen in the east. Comet Schwassman-Wachman-3 is responsible for the Tau Herculid meteor shower which falls on the night of the 31st May – 1st June, and although quite high in the western sky, the meteors will be hard to spot in the dawn light.

The innermost planet can be seen low in the northwest after sunset from the 1st until mid-May, when it becomes harder to spot as it moves closer to the Sun. Try looking at around 9.45pm on the 2nd, where it is located in-between the Pleiades cluster and a thin crescent moon (see ﬁgure).

Venus

Venus is dazzling away in our morning skies, rising around 4am in the east. It has a close meeting (called a conjunction) with Jupiter on the 1st May.

Caught in the act Olivia Colman explains why the need to be busy far outweighs a desire to be popular. Olivia Colman’s career trajectory has seen the true evolution of an actress, almost back to the point where she started. The actress set out on her path to dramatic excellence at the much-renowned Footlights Dramatic Club at Cambridge University. There, she shared the stage with the likes of David Mitchell, Richard Ayoade and Peter Seraﬁnowicz, the latest in a long line of undergraduates to have trodden the boards. The route to a wider audience took Coleman on the same path as older dramatists and comedians Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery and Sue Perkins; and yet despite excelling in Rev, Broadchurch, The Night Manager and The Favourite,

the 48-yearold actress has arguably spent the last few years coming full circle. Not only did she reunite herself with the simple pleasures of playing live to an audience, during a wildly successful National Theatre run as Jenny in Mosquitoes, but away from the dazzling sparks of Tinseltown’s arrogance, Colman has found herself reconnecting with the simple, organic, rustic pleasures and projects, including a spate of independent ﬁlms. “I think we all move through various stages in our lives and the worst thing you can ever do is stay in the same space continually,” she says. “I’m one of those curious characters who takes those sorts of things to extremes – I yearn for the next project, the next setting; yet when I get there I’m in it all of a few minutes before plotting another step elsewhere.” Of course, her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown gave her perhaps a pinnacle role that may, in

future, deﬁne this brilliant talent more than any other. There is a problem, though. “I’m not good at taking praise,” she admits. “It feels very awkward to me and every time someone fawns over my work I can’t help but think there are millions of people all across the country doing jobs that are inﬁnitely more important than mine.” London-based Colman, who returns this year in Secret Invasion, a Disney+ TV miniseries based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, who is married to actor Ed Sinclair and has three children. Perhaps it is that grounding that presents the actress with an ability to connect with an audience in a way that circumnavigates gender, social status and age. “Ultimately, working makes me happy,” she admits, “although I do struggle to say no. “That people still want to watch me is the biggest thrill and, of course, the greatest mystery!”

Understanding Investments:

Planning to retire within the next 10 years? For many people, life is an act of juggling competing financial demands. However, this can often change mid-40’s to mid-50’s when children may have grown up and become financially independent, debts including the mortgage have been reduced or cleared and you are in your peak earning years. This is when thoughts may turn to the next major change in your life-retirement! Realising there are only 10 years or less to maximise savings, clients often tell me it’s time to “get serious” about financial planning and want to ensure they retain as much of their earnings as possible and minimise the tax they pay to save more. They also want to understand “how much is enough” and have a plan to enable them to retire at a time of their choosing. I’ve listed below some of the key information required to help create a plan. 1. Understand what loans (including mortgage) are outstanding, what interest is being charged and when they are due to be repaid. It is important to be debt free at retirement, albeit there are number of ways to achieve that depending on your personal tax situation. 2. Obtain a state pension projection to understand what you will be entitled to and when. This can be obtained online via the Government website and will be a valuable source of inflation-protected income at the state pension age. It is possible to top this up with lump sum payments if you haven’t been credited with the full 35 years of National Insurance contributions. 3. Obtain projections from any Defined Benefit Pensions. These can also provide future inflation-protected income and the date they are due to commence will vary depending on scheme rules. 4. Quantify your personal assets which include cash, investments and property. Understand

what your investments such as ISAS and Pensions Howard Goodship are invested in, what you are paying in charges and to what level of risk they are exposed. Is this too low or too high or just right, based on when you plan to retire. Do your pension plans allow full pension freedom flexibility in the way you can access income in retirement (FlexiAccess Drawdown, UFPLS, Annuities)? Once you understand your current position, you need to quantify how much you will need to have accrued by the time you want to retire. Often people want to retire before the state pension age or need more income than the state provide, so how do you save enough to meet those gaps? What is the most tax-efficient way to save? Any plan also needs to incorporate inflationfor example inflation at 3% per annum (long term average) means expenses in retirement could double every 24 years. We utilise specialist cash-flow tools to answer all these questions and help clients plan for their retirement. Once in retirement, we help them maximise their lifestyles by showing them whether their retirement “wish-list” is affordable and if so, encouraging them to do things whilst they are fit and able. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about his background running a lighting design company. When I got my break in television, I was running a lighting design company. It wasn’t easy, but I always carried with me a driving passion for the subject. My work on Grand Designs and a few other things has taken me away from the subject, and I am perhaps not the expert I once was when it comes to lighting, as now my expertise is spread rather more across whole-of-whole elements, but I do think any outdoor space can look absolutely spectacular with garden lights. It’s something that’s only really become commonplace over

the past couple of decades, thanks in no small part to some very costeffective imports from abroad. I love lights that resemble fireflies dancing on your rose bushes, or glowering lamps that mimic the dying embers of the barbeque as the warm night stretches out before you, glass of rosé in hand. Fairy lights are an obvious and easy choice to brighten up an outdoor space; just make sure they are the waterproof kind purchased from a garden centre, not leftovers from the Christmas tree. Designs these days come in an array of colours and styles, from dragonflies to lanterns and teardrops, and are ideal to adorn arches, fences and trees. To light up paths and flowerbeds, solarpowered stake lights are best.

They dig into the dirt, are almost invisible as they charge during the day, then transform into glimmering jewels at night. If you’re the kind of person who opts for a ﬁre pit over a fancy gas barbecue, there’s a good chance you’ll want your outdoor decorations to be equally primal. Lanterns are a fantastic way to instantly add a touch of class, whether Scandinavianstyle tin or mosaic Moroccan glass, while outdoor candles in buckets are a budget option, and anything with citronella scent will also deter bugs. For a festival feel, you can’t beat bamboo Tiki torches that are lit using oil, because sometimes, only ﬁre will do. Whatever outdoor space you are looking to light up, less is generally more, and the subtleties will shine through the darkness if you allow them.

Wild flowers planted around West Moors Plans to sow wildflower seeds on grass verges in West Moors started in September 2021 and now, in just a couple of weeks, the wilding should begin!

Working in partnership with Dorset Council (DC), various locations in West Moors were earmarked for the planting of wildflowers, to help attract wildlife to the grass verges and improve the overall environment. The seeds were purchased by West Moors Town Council, but Dorset Council Open Spaces Team carried out all the hard work; Measuring all the locations, marking them, weighing the seeds needed for each area, rotavating,

raking and seed sowing. In the last couple of weeks all areas that are due for re-wilding, have been prepared. Councillors and Staff joined Daryl Pearce and James Walker-Beckett (DC Open Spaces) at Fryer Field last month, to take part in the process for that particular location. Whilst working towards helping tackle Climate Change – it has to be said – fun was had by all! We wait with excitement to see the beauty of West Moors bloom very soon! In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at taking ﬁnancial responsibility for ourselves in these post-pandemic days. What the Coronavirus pandemic has given us, probably more than any point in the past 50 years, is an idea that we can turn to a bank, or the government, or a charity, for help and support. And I won’t deny that, in some examples, these entities have stood up and there has been a feeling of support and community. Yet I think we all realise that can only go so far. We have now emerged out of the darkness of the pandemic, and slowly but shortly the directive is that we have to fend for ourselves again. I don’t doubt some support remains, but I wouldn’t expect it to last forever.

The average food waste bill in the UK still stands at around £750 per year, and that’s horrendous. Remember the difference between Use By and Best Before, and it will save you hundreds each year. If you have any packaging that has a date on it, if it’s after that date, lots of people just sling the food. Well, let’s remember – Use By is a health notice to you. If something is beyond its Use By date, you need to chuck it in the bin. Best Before is the manufacturer’s guide to optimum quality. All it means is that the item will be

in its best possible condition before this date. The day after a Best Before, it’s still perfectly legitimate to eat. With some canned goods, it’s still perfectly okay to eat them three or four years after the Best Before date. So, use your nose to smell it, use your eyes to look at it, use your senses to decide whether it’s right for you. Just by diminishing that, and by having a decent shopping list and proper menu planning, you will cut down waste. That’s not just good for your pocket, but also good for the environment.

I think we are all living slightly differently now, and certainly in wake of food shortages during the ﬁrst lockdown, I have seen much greater understanding and willingness of people to feed their families more responsibly.

Gordon Ramsay’s Beef Wellington Introduction This beef wellington looks impressive, but it’s actually a lot easier to do than it might appear. Using a mix of simple ingredients, like puff pastry and prime beef ﬁllet, this wellington can be used to replace the traditional main in a Sunday roast, or for any special occasion. Served alongside sautéed potatoes and wilted baby gem lettuce – with classic mustard vinaigrette making a great dressing – this is a hearty, rustic dish that the whole family can tuck into.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 400g flat cap mushrooms, roughly chopped • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • olive oil, for cooking • 750g piece of prime beef fillet • 1-2tbsp English mustard • 6-8 slices of Parma ham • 500g ready-made puff pastry • flour, to dust • 2 egg yolks, beaten

Method

1. Put the mushrooms into a food processor with some seasoning and pulse to a rough paste. Scrape the paste into a pan and cook over a high heat for about 10 mins, tossing frequently, to cook out the moisture from the mushrooms. Spread out on a plate to cool. 2. Heat a frying pan and add a little olive oil. Season the beef

Carving at the table can bring everyone together, and it’s hard to go wrong with tender beef, juicy and sear in the hot pan mushrooms and mustard.

for 30 secs only on each side. (You don’t want to cook it at this stage, just colour it). Remove the beef from the pan and leave to cool, then brush all over with the mustard. 3. Lay a sheet of cling film on a work surface and arrange the Parma ham slices on it, in slightly overlapping rows. With a palette knife, spread the mushroom paste over the ham, then place the seared beef fillet in the middle. Keeping a tight hold of the cling film from the edge, neatly roll the Parma ham and mushrooms around the beef to form a tight barrel shape. Twist the ends of the cling film to secure. Chill for 1520 mins to allow the beef to set and keep its shape. 4. Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface to a large rectangle, the thickness of a £1 coin. Remove the cling film from the beef, then lay in the

centre. Brush the surrounding pastry with egg yolk. Fold the ends over, then wrap the pastry around the beef, cutting off any excess. Turn over so the seam is underneath, and place on a baking sheet. Brush over all the pastry with egg and chill for about 15 mins to let the pastry rest. 5. Heat the oven to 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6. Lightly score the pastry at 1cm intervals and glaze again with beaten egg yolk. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven setting to 180°C, 350°F, gas mark 4 and cook for another 15 mins. Allow to rest for 10-15 mins before slicing and serving with the side dishes of your choice. The beef should still be pink in the centre when you serve it.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for ﬁve years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution.

Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (that wasn’t a talent show or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their lives, and focused on the idea that people could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people involved in Ground Force came from different backgrounds and offered very different ideas in the process of transforming a chosen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probably one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing together, however clumsily! The show’s success provoked a whole raft of other home reality programmes where people’s dreams came true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward transformations Changing Rooms embarked on! Yet for the most part, this brand of telly was incredibly successful – think DIY SOS, Property Ladder, Amazing Spaces, Grand Designs, Location Location Location and others. At the heart of it is exploring human nature and putting

ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and seeing how they react. Everyone who agrees to take part is looking for something, and the lucky ones are the ones who ﬁnd it and know when they have found it. After all, our gardens will never be absolutely perfect places – nature sees to that – but Ground Force certainly got them close to that for a time. As the TV crews departed, I would always suggest to the homeowners they should just sit in or look out over their garden without feeling conditioned to keep it in a certain way. Life isn’t like that – it evolves, as do our outside spaces, and we should let it. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”… or tidying the garden!

Ferrari’s Diamond Design It was 75 years ago, in 1947, that the very first Ferrari hit the streets; and while in the time since various manufacturers and designers have looked to emulate the Prancing Horse’s mould of motoring magnificence, very few have been able to. As iconic a sight as you will find on road and racetrack, to celebrate the company’s milestone, we look back on the history of Italy’s most prestigious automotive manufacturer. The legendary Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988) began his motoring career as an Alfa Romeo driver in 1924, but within five years he had gone on to found the Scuderia Ferrari – which assisted gentlemen drivers in racing cars – in his hometown of Modena. In 1938, Alfa Romeo brought the Scuderia under its control, but Ferrari disagreed with the move and left in 1939 to set up his own racing company. Under the terms of the split from Alfa, Enzo was unable to use his own name on his race cars until years later. Horsepower The soon-to-be-iconic Cavallino Rampante (prancing horse) was adopted from the emblem of Italian WW2 fighter ace Francesco Baracca, who painted the design on his

plane. Enzo Ferrari was given permission to use the design from Baracca’s mother, who believed it would bring the car manufacturer good luck. Ferrari placed the black horse on a canary yellow background (the colour of Modena) and topped it with the tricolour of Italy. The rest, as they say, is history. The first Ferrari The first racing car to bear the Ferrari moniker was the 12-cylinder 1.5-litre Tipo 125, which was released in 1947. Just two models of this original car were created, neither of which exist today. A winning formula The first Ferrari driver to claim the Formula One World Championship was Alberto Ascari, taking the top spot in 1952. Scuderia Ferrari has produced the most championshipwinning drivers – 15 – since Ascari’s maiden victory. The most famous of these include Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher – who won

ﬁve consecutive titles – and Kimi Raikkonen. Ferrari also holds the top spot when it comes to the Constructor’s Championships, with 16 victories from 1961-2008, and 239 F1 race victories in total. The 200 Club The Ferrari F40 was the last car approved for production by Enzo Ferrari himself, and was the ﬁrst road car to break the 200mph barrier. The new breed of Ferraris The latest and most ambitious vehicles to roll off the company’s production line have been the Ferrari LaFerrari and Roma models – the former is equipped with an F1-derived hybrid solution that combines an electric motor capable of producing over 150 CV with the most powerful version of Ferrari’s classic V12.

ELLIE’S SMILE Ellie’s family were torn apart by the devastating news that their beautiful, smiley baby girl had an aggressive brain tumour. At five weeks, Ellie developed what looked like a bee sting on her underarm. Her mood changed and she became erratic rather than her usual smiley self. Ellie had a tumour on her brain. She had an operation during which she suffered a stroke, which left her partially-sighted and with no movement down her right side. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and underwent chemotherapy. “We were exhausted,” says Ellie’s mum, Jenna. “Julia’s House was mentioned to us and we were very stand-offish at first

Summer DRRt: The Purbeck 4000 - 19th June 2022 Enter the EPIC 33 miles and 4,000 feet of climb and descent in the Purbeck hills or the new 22 miles LITE route. The routes feature cliﬀtop bridleways, outstanding sea views, rolling chalk downs to sandy heath land and a forest, there’s just about everything you could wish for.

In co-operation with the National Trust we set up the HQ at Studland South Beach. This is in one of the large pay and display car parks with a real ale pub next door! You can also park at Sandbanks and cycle across to the start via the chain ferry (£2 return). Sign in for this event is between 9.00am and 9.30am, please do not arrive any later!

The DRR gazebo will be there – simply sign in, collect your map/ guide, number wristband (which can be put on your bike) and start the ride. All we ask is that you wear a helmet at all times (mandatory), carry a mobile phone and report back to the start point by the required time to collect your goodies.

What you get for your entry fee: • A coloured map with a detailed ride guide on the reverse. A code of conduct for all riders is on the rear – please read this carefully. • A route way marked with over 50 direction signs.

Simply turn up at the time stated for the event. Arrivals after the designated sign in slot will not be permitted. For the Purbeck 4000 event, this is at the National Trust car park (Pay and Display) at South Beach BH19 3AU.

If you are unable to complete the course for whatever reason please inform the organisers by calling the telephone number provided on the map. Also make sure you sign in at the midway point so we know you haven’t got lost!

Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s Pear & Almond Cake Introduction

This soft, dense, almondy cake can be served warm for pudding with lashings of cream, or cold with a cup of tea or coffee. Firm Conference pears should work a treat here.

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm diameter, springform cake tin and line the base with baking parchment. 2. Put a saucepan over a medium heat and add 25g of the butter. When it’s sizzling, add a tablespoon of sugar and stir until it dissolves. Add the pear quarters and fry in the buttery caramel for ﬁve to ten minutes, until they start to brown and soften (the time taken will vary greatly, depending on how ripe the pears are). Put to one side to cool a little.

3. Put the remaining butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and cream together until light and ﬂuffy. Beat in the two eggs, one at a time. Whizz the whole blanched almonds (if using) in a food processor for about a minute, to grind them. Tip them into the cake batter (or add the readyground almonds), then sift in the self-raising ﬂour and fold in gently. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin. Arrange the pieces of pear on top of the cake.

4. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a knife pushed into the centre comes out clean. Place the tin on a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or cold.

Ingredients (serves 6) • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 125g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp • 3 pears, ﬁrm but not too hard, peeled, cored and quartered • 2 eggs • 75g whole blanched almonds or ground almonds • 75g self-raising ﬂour
