Dear Neighbours, Did you have a good Easter break? With two bank holiday Mondays this Edition 109 month as well, we really are being spoiled. We had a very busy April going over to The Isle of Wight for a family celebration of my Mum and Dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. The weather was wonderful and with 180 degree sea views from Debbie & Stephen Corney the house on the cliff top, it with our son, Hayden was really rather special. I have to say I do like the Isle of Wight. We were there for a holiday last summer and we couldn’t wait to go back. Straight after coming back, and an overnight unpack and repack, we went off to The New Forest for a long weekend camping in Nellie! We joined the Caravan Club as Stephen’s parents are already members and we met them at the Centenary Site which is a lovely park with good facilities. Stephen’s sister has a new, retro, bright yellow VW Campervan - Jessie Phyllis named after her two grandmothers. She shines! We were not quite so lucky with the weather but sitting in the van playing games and then watching a movie on the computer, all cuddled up together, made the weekend very special and a great end to a fantastic ten days. All in all it has taken some effort getting back to work, but we are glad to say that The West Moors Directory is full of local information for you as well as trades people who would love to hear from you. Recruitment campaign underway to... support front line services A key aspect of ensuring we provide high quality care for all of our patients is our staff – having the right staff in the right place delivering the right care at the right time Last year at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals we invested over £1m in nursing but recruitment doesn’t stop there. We are currently recruiting a range of additional consultant, nursing staff and other clinical roles to support our front line services.
New consultant positions
We currently employ 161 consultants and on completion of the recruitment programme towards the end of the autumn, an additional 22 consultants will be providing care for our patients. The additional posts will support increased seven day working and consultantled care across all specialities, including the Emergency Department. Mr Basil Fozard, the hospitals’ Medical Director said: “Our consultants and their teams play a central role in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients every single day. This avoids delay in patient care and ensures the smooth flow of patients throughout the hospital. “We know that having the right medical experts on hand, whatever day of the week, will ultimately help improve care further.”
Qualified nurse recruitment campaign
We continue to recruit additional experienced nurses through a number of routes and due to the national shortage of experienced band 5 nurses, this includes overseas recruitment. By the end of June we aim to have recruited a total of 97 qualified nurses from the UK and Europe: Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “An important part in providing excellent care is ensuring we have the right staff delivering the right care at the right time for every patient.

She added: “We know from the national staff survey that our staff believe our organisation is a good place to work. We are really proud to serve the local community and want every patient to leave hospital feeling they have received excellent care from warm, friendly, expert staff who treated them with respect and dignity.
“An important part in providing excellent care is ensuring we have the right staff delivering the right care at the right time for every patient.” Our new European nurses are fully qualified in their own country and we have a tailored induction programme which includes assessment of skills and practice under supervision, as well as further workshops in the classroom to embed learning. There are a number of other staffing investments that are being made including: r support and recruitment for additional clinical services such as assistant health practitioners, therapists and additional security porters r new and adaptive roles, such as nurse practitioners to support the wider team r additional supervisory time for ward sisters to support ward staff r smarter use of technology, such as iPads for vital sign monitoring, and e-forms to reduce duplicate paperwork r extended and seven day working for services such as radiology and speech and language therapy.

West Moors Parish Council Design a Map Competition Winner In November 2013 West Moors Parish Council launched a completion to design a map of West Moors. The map could have been hand drawn, painted or even computer generated and should include all the major features of the village. At the Annual Public meeting held on the 11th April the winner Julia Brown was presented with her prize of £100 which was kindly donated by the West Moors Local Action Group. The cheque was presented by Mrs Donna Marlborough from the Local Action Group. Julia’s winning design which everyone agreed was fun, colourful and bright has been enlarged and is on display in the parish council noticeboard located in Station Road.

Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. We are Grandparents who, until recently, were involved in the care of our grandchildren. Sadly our son and daughter-in-law have decided to divorce, since their separation our daughter-in-law will not allow us to see the children. Consider a referral to mediation. Mediation is voluntary and entails you and your daughter-in-law meeting at the offices of an impartial mediator. The mediator will establish the issues, explore options and guide you to an agreement. If your daughter-in-law is not willing to attend mediation you can apply to the court for leave (permission) to make an application under s8 of the Children Act 1989 for a contact order. Both your son and daughter-in-law will be Respondents to your application and will be served with a copy of your application.
The application will then be listed for a final directions appointment. With the benefit of the statements etc, you may agree future arrangements for the children, if not the court will make directions to prepare the case for hearing.

Will I need to have a survey carried out on the property I’m purchasing? The general principle is that it is the buyer’s responsibility to be satisfied as to the general condition of a property purchased. Provided a buyer is not misled by the seller, he cannot complain after exchange of contracts and completion as to its condition. If you are obtaining a mortgage a valuer will inspect the property on behalf of the lender. Although his report will give you an indication as to whether he thinks the property is worth the amount that you have asked to borrow you will probably not be able to rely on it if things go wrong.
You will also all receive notice of the first directions appointment when you will all be required to attend court. At that appointment you may agree future arrangements, if not the court will consider what directions it should make to progress matters. Directions can include the preparation of statements and/or for CAFCASS to prepare a report.
At the final hearing all parties will be expected to present their case, give evidence and be cross examined by the other parties or their lawyers, before an order is made.
For an extra fee you will usually be offered the option to arrange for the same valuer to carry out a more detailed “Home Buyers Report”. This can be relied upon by you so if at a later date you find a problem that is not mentioned in the report you will have some redress against the valuer. If the property is quite old or you are particularly concerned about its condition you can obtain a full structural survey report which is even more detailed.

But, as mentioned at the start, always remember the golden rule is “let the buyer beware” so (provided you have not been misled) you will be liable for any problems that you discover after exchange of contracts.

Local school children visit East Dorset Council Children from four local schools have visited East Dorset District Council to learn more about the responsibilities and work of the council. School council representatives from Hillside Community first school and Emmanuel middle school in Verwood, Oakhurst Community first school in West Moors and Lockyer’s middle school in Corfe Mullen all took part in a morning of learning and activities in the East Dorset council chamber. The chairman of East Dorset Council, Cllr Malcolm Birr, welcomed the children before Cllr Sarah Burns gave an outline of the council’s responsibilities. Pupils also learned about the council’s community development and community safety work, took part in a good citizenship quiz and got a taste of the voting experience by nominating their favourite part of the morning. Following the session, Cllr Birr said: “I am delighted
that these young people were able to come and learn more about the work of the council. The group showed great enthusiasm and asked lots of questions. “I hope they all enjoyed the day and that learning more about the responsibilities of the council and the work of its councillors and officers will help them with the good work they are all doing for their school councils.”

Dorset Youth Marching Band Dorset Youth Marching Band was founded in 1996, the name of the Quarterjacks was given to the band as we’d developed close ties with Wimborne Minster. The Band meets every Wednesday evening at QE School and is open to ALL youth in Wimborne and the surrounding areas. Our Bandmaster Simon Wheeler has ancestors that founded the First Wimborne Town Band and we are very proud that this tradition continues to provide entertainment and music for the people of Wimborne to this day. On the 19th May 2009 DYMB were officially awarded the title of Wimborne Town Band by Cllr Robin Cook. The Band are and always have been very proud to be a part of Wimborne and becoming the official Town Band was a proud day for us! Youth in Music was created to give all youth in the local area an opportunity to come together and perform on Willow Walk. Youth in Music 2013 was set to be a brilliant one and it didn’t disappoint! DYMB, Gugge 2000, Wessex Majorettes, Quarterjacks Choir and Duet plus One showed what the youth of Dorset can do on a sunny day! Youth in Music 2014 is set to be another great event so place the 28th June in your diary.

West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club meets on a Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua church hall, Pinehurst Road. Lunch is served at midday after members have had time for a chat and a look at the table sale of greetings cards, books and donated items, followed by tea or coffee and the weekly raffle. After lunch we have table games (cards, board games, floor bowls or hockey etc.), sometimes a quiz or poetry readings or entertainment. The day ends with afternoon tea & cakes and a game or two of bingo. The week before Easter our raffle was extra special and we were beautifully entertained by Amber singing a variety of songs, many of which we could sing along to. At the end of the afternoon every member and helper received a chocolate Easter egg to take home. Our table games afternoons are taken quite seriously, some members not wishing to stop their game for their cup of tea and a large group of others using playing cards and buttons !

UKULELE JAM & THE ROCK CHOIR SATURDAY 7th JUNE 7.30pm WEST MOORS MEMORIAL HALL This promises to be a really lively concert featuring a Ukulele band known as Ukulele Jam. They will be bringing along some popular songs and some musical rhythm. Also featured are the exciting Rock Choir who lifted the roof off with a thoroughly entertaining evening last year, They will be performing their new songs in their same, great style. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow! Nellie has been a very busy ‘girl’ this month. She took us to Moors Valley where she met not only the train but also the tractor…. story below. Then she took us to The Isle of Wight for a 50th Wedding Annivesary celebration with my parents and then… a weekend trip to the New Forest with Stephen’s parents and his sister in her gorgeous yellow VW Campervan! Nellie is currently resting in the garden… It is a lot of work you know for an ‘old girl’ who is a little overweight. Moors Valley is a favourite for many. It is a fantastic place for youngsters, parents and grandparents alike. Saturday the 5th April was a special day and Hayden, our son was invited to be a park keeper for the day. Just like Percy! There is a brand new trail for all the family which is an ideal way to get the children out to experience our wonderful countryside. As the Moors Valley website says, “Enjoy… Experience… Explore… At Moors Valley there is something for everyone… whether you want to enjoy a peaceful walk or cycle ride through the Forest, experience a ride on an authentic

In the main signal box with Jim Haylock narrow-gauge steam train or even Go Ape on a high wire forest adventure swinging through the tree tops.” We started our day in the reception area where there was a great art exhibition of wild animals. Wonderful paintings. After a smooth start, this is where the fun started for us. Nellie had been invited to meet the steam train, so off we went down to the wonderful station, so well set out. Stephen drove Nellie across the railway line so we could take a photo of the train and her together. At the other side was a lovely, if rather wet looking field. Have you guessed…. YES, Nellie got stuck in the mud! Her high wheels spun very ineffectively and she sat there looking rather frustrated. Much to her delight, and that of Hayden who was now worried as he had a swimming competition to attend later in the day and feared he would never make it, the tractor was a great success and Nellie came out totally unscathed, if a little flushed… and muddy. It was all rather exciting really.
39 The trains at Moors Valley are a treat. We were very honoured, not only to meet Jim Haylock the owner and creator of the Moors Valley Railway, but also have a personal tour by him. Originally Jim was a carpet fitter but had always had a dream to create a ‘full railway experience’. This is exactly what you get when you hop aboard. There is a ticket collector, a conductor, bridges, overhead signs, a signal box, level crossings, in fact everything you see on a full working railway. There are even sheds where the trains are made, renovated and otherwise kept in tip top condition. Jim and his nephew Tim, who is now working very closely with his uncle, both have a total passion for trains and you can see the sheer delight and enjoyment in what they do. Tim drove his first train at a very early age and I think from the look in his eyes he was smitten immediately. What young boy wouldn’t be! Hayden, our son was so excited when he was able to blow the whistle to start the train! His chest stuck out like a proud robin as he blew. A very happy boy. We didn’t have enough time to do the Percy trail unfortunately, but will be back, as Moors Valley is a favourite of ours. Hayden is also extremely keen to try his

Hayden can’t wait to Go Ape! skills at Go Ape, so I guess now that he is tall enough, we will be doing this soon too. Wish me luck! We are so fortunate to have such a gorgeous park which is ever developing and expanding. 4. LOVE AND HELP CHILDREN Today’s children will become tomorrow’s civilization. Bringing a child into the world today is a little bit like dropping one into a tiger’s cage. Children can’t handle their environment1 and they have no real resources. They need love and help to make it. It is a delicate problem to discuss. There are almost as many theories on how to raise a child or not raise him as there are parents. Yet if one does it wrong much grief can result and one may even complicate his or her own later years. Some try to raise children the way they were themselves raised, others attempt the exact opposite, many hold to an idea that children should just be let grow on their own. None of these guarantee success. The last method is based on a materialistic2 idea that the development of the child parallels the evolutionary3 history of the race; that in some magical way, unexplained, the “nerves” of the child will “ripen” as he or she grows older and the result will be a moral,4 well-behaving adult. Although the theory is disproven with ease – simply by noticing the large criminal population whose nerves somehow did not ripen – it is a lazy way to raise children and achieves some popularity. It doesn’t take care of your civilization’s future or your older years. A child is a little bit like a blank slate. If you write the wrong things on it, it will say the wrong things. But, unlike a slate, a child can begin to do the writing: the child tends to write what has been written already. The problem is complicated by the fact that, while most children are capable of great decency, a few are born insane and, today, some are even born as drug addicts: but such cases are an unusual few. It does no good just to try to “buy” the child with an overwhelm of toys and possessions or to smother and protect the child: the result can be pretty awful. One has to make up his mind what he is trying to get the child to become: this is modified by several things: (a) what the child basically can become due to inherent make-up and potential; (b) what the child really wants to become; (c) what one wants the child to become; (d) the resources available. But remember that whatever these all add up to, the child will not survive well unless he or she eventually becomes self-reliant and very moral. Otherwise the end product is likely to be a liability to everyone including the child.
Whatever one’s affection for the child, remember that the child cannot survive well in the long run if he or she does not have his or her feet put on the way to survival. It will be no accident if the child goes wrong: the contemporary society is tailor-made for a child’s failure. It will help enormously if you obtain a child’s understanding of and agreement to follow the precepts5 contained in this book. What does have a workability is simply to try to be the child’s friend. It is certainly true that a child needs friends. Try to find out what a child’s problem really is and, without crushing their own solutions, try to help solve them. Observe them – and this applies even to babies. Listen to what children tell you about their lives. Let them help – if you don’t, they become overwhelmed with a sense of obligation6 which they then must repress. It will help the child enormously if you obtain understanding of and agreement to this way to happiness and get him or her to follow it. It could have an enormous effect on the child’s survival – and yours. A child factually does not do well without love. Most children have an abundance of it to return.

Why not join the friendly group who meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings. You will be very welcome. There is an ongoing exhibition in the local Library of members work for sale so why not add to this. A demonstration by a professional artist is enjoyed on the second Monday in each month with members, always happy to help each other, meeting for untutored workshops on all other Mondays. There is no demonstration this month but we are looking forward to June 9th when Tony Paul will be with us to paint a portrait using watercolours. John Thornton Music Awards The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation was honoured to be invited to present awards at the end of season concert for the Dorset Music Service County Ensembles. Over 100 talented young musicians took part in the concert, performing to an audience of over 300 people. Tickets sales raised more than £1300 and the JTYAF was delighted to have been chosen as the recipient charity for this prestigious event. The concert was held at Bryanston School and not only marked the end of season, but was also the result of a residential weekend of activities and rehearsals. This celebration of musical talent was inspirational. The young musicians performed to an extremely high level and their enjoyment and enthusiasm was evident. Their achievement, an electrifying performance, was testament to their own commitment and dedication and also to the hard work of their talented musical professionals. The audience showed their appreciation with sustained applause and with a variety of genres, from Vivaldi to Coldplay, every musical interest was catered for. The JTYAF was delighted to present the John Thornton Music Awards to nine talented musicians who were selected because of the remarkable progress that they had made during the season and for their outstanding commitment to the Dorset Youth Orchestras. The bursaries attached to these awards will provide them with the opportunity to further their musical development. Ferndown Tennis Club celebrates 50th Anniversary Christchurch MP Chris Chope and his wife Christo, Ferndown’s Mayor Pauline Reynolds, Town Clerk Vanessa Ricketts, and Dorset LTA Councillor Richard Henshaw, were among those celebrating with past and present members Fifty years of Ferndown Tennis Club on Saturday 5th April. The Club has played during this time at the King George V Playing Field Courts Ferndown, which is also the location of the Town Council Offices, and to mark the occasion ex-members and invited guests gathered for this special event. Three of the original founder members of the Club were present to cut the celebration cake, Dot and Len Hawker and Betty Bunce who was the Club’s secretary for an astounding 33 years. Her successor Viv Scott has been the current secretary for a mere 17 years! Following a short speech by Chairman Lynn Chong, drinks and an excellent buffet were enjoyed by everyone.

BROADWAY SHOWTUNES Bournemouth’s Big Little Theatre School is delighted to announce the 14th consecutive year of their hit summer show BROADWAY SHOWTUNES at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre. The show which features a cast of over 130 professionally trained musical theatre students backed by a live orchestra runs from Thursday 17th – Saturday 19th July 2014 and includes music from some of the most famous and dramatic shows of all time including Wicked, Hairspray, 42nd Street, Blood Brothers, Fiddler On The Roof, Lion King, Carousel and many more. The show is conceived by Big Little’s creative team led by former west end performer Sam Taylor Martin and west end musical director Colin Billing who, alongside a team of other top directors and choreographers will be working with the talented young cast over the coming weeks to rehearse the show to the highest professional standards. Always publically and critically acclaimed, last year the show was visited by the son of Disney songwriter Robert B. Sherman. Robert’s son (also called Robert) who recently worked with Colin Billing on A Spoonful Of Sherman
in London’s west end, was so impressed with what he saw he said “There were moments during the show, when my head was telling me that I was watching a student show while my eyes, ears and heart were saying this has to be a West End production. It was THAT good!” With all the talent on show over the past fourteen years it’s no surprise that many of the former cast members have forged very successful careers in the musical theatre industry and one of them, David Jay Douglas, who left Big Little in 2009 and went on to further training at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, returns to Bournemouth next week appearing in Bill Kenwright’s UK touring production of Dreamboats & Petticoats. This is a golden time for those in debt. While that may seem a strange thing to say, the best EVER deals for cutting loan, store or credit card costs are now on the market. So if you've existing debts, a little bit of action could save you £100s or £1,000s. The aim is to cut the interest rate you pay, so more of your repayments clear the debt rather than servicing the interest, so you're debt-free far quicker. 1. Stop borrowing. Borrowing more just makes the problem costlier and longer-lived. You can’t borrow your way out of debt. The tips below are about getting new products, not borrowing more. 2. CREDIT & STORE CARD DEBT: Shift to 31mths 0%. If you've debts on cards, do a balance transfer. This is where you ask a new card to pay off debts on other cards, so you owe it instead, hopefully at a cheaper rate. To get a card, you must pass a credit score. Usually the only way to find out is to apply, which marks your file. To get round that, find which card’s most likely to accept you with my free Eligibility Checker at www.mse.me/ eligibility Follow the balance transfer golden rules: a) Always repay at least the set monthly minimum, or you lose special rates. b) Always plan to shift the debt again or fully repay before the 0% ends, or these cards' rates jump to 18.9% and 17.9% representative APR. c) Don't spend on these cards – it's usually not at the same cheap rate. 3. LOAN DEBT: Can you cut the cost? This is more difficult, as most old loans charge up to two months' interest to repay early, which needs factoring in. It's worth trying if you can get a much lower APR loan (ie, more than a fifth off) and have a while left to repay – especially if your credit score's improved since getting the loan.

So set up a direct debit to cover at least the monthly minimum, then manually pay more on top each month. 7. Got both debts and savings? Stop. £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs £180 a year, while the same amount saved in top paying savings earns just £15 before tax. If you’re thinking “yes, but I like some spare cash”, this is often false security. More at www.mse.me/ClearDebtsWithSavings 8. Free debt crisis help. While my tips above should help cut the cost of debt, for some people that isn’t enough. If you're struggling to meet your minimum repayments and basic bills, have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year's salary, or can’t sleep for worry, you're likely to be in debt crisis.
If so, ignore the options above and contact a non-profit debt advice service that uses a different set of solutions, such as StepChange (stepchange.org), Citizens Advice 4. OVERDRAFTS/CATALOGUES: Shift to 0%. (citizensadvice.org.uk) or National Debtline If you've a costly overdraft or need to put money in a bank account to pay off catalogue debts, there’s a way to (nationaldebtline.co.uk). Tastes so good... BUTTERED BRIOCHE PUDDING
If you’re looking for a little bit of food indulgence it doesn’t get much better than this pudding. Super easy to prepare, this dish works beautifully well either on its own, or with a dollop of custard or ice-cream.
Ingredients:
Equipment: Well greased, deep baking dish
1 brioche, sliced and buttered 60g sultanas 2 level tablespoons castor sugar 1 1/4 pint whole milk 4 medium sized eggs Sprinkling of nutmeg
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 3-4.
Serve with cream, custard or icecream.
Place the milk in a pan and gently heat.
Slice and butter the brioche. Put a layer on the bottom of the dish and sprinkle the sultanas over them. Arrange a second layer of brioche over the top.
Whisk the eggs and sugar together and add the warm milk to make a creamy custard. Strain the custard over the brioche and sprinkle the nutmeg over. Stand for 15 minutes before placing in the oven. Cook for 30-40 minutes until set and lightly golden.

Being married to a greengrocer has its perks, if you like your fruit and veg fresh every day. Me, I’m not that bothered. Tastes the same as your supermarket stuff, if you ask me. And then, at the end of the day, I’m presented with all this floppy greenery and bruised fruit and he expects me to do something with it. ‘Shame for it to go to waste,’ he says. He can talk the talk - melons, plums, titter titter, the ladies love him. I can see them all, clamouring for his favours. His favours, as I know them, are dwindling now. I’m not that bothered. Our son, Ryan, being so like his dad, has a flair for the job and loves being on the stall. I can hear his banter from down the street. Some nice girl will love him, I tell myself. After all, his father has me. Who am I kidding? I sometimes wonder if Charlie ever thinks of me when he’s out and about, chatting up his ladies. He’s not a romantic chap, my Charlie, not at home, anyway. They’ve branched out into home deliveries. ‘Nice little earner,’ Charlie says. ‘Ryan on the stall, me doing the boxes.’ He’s bought a van. Elkins and Son. Quality Fruit and Veg delivered to your door. I notice our veg is going upmarket. ‘It’s what people expect,’ he says. Every colour of pepper (stuff the peppers, ha-ha), corn-on-the-cob, artichokes. Artifartichokes, I call them. ‘You are lucky,’ says my friend, Rita. Really? I wonder. What would you do with bruised kumquats? I’m not sure about my friend. She’s always liked Charlie (that’s not why I’m not sure about her, she doesn’t know him like I do) so why is she saying these things about him? Of course he has to spend time away from home. Yes, he’s out in his van a lot, and on the allotment, that’s where his ‘special deals’ come from. I wonder why she’s so interested; she doesn’t seem bothered about my feelings. I think she might be jealous. She’s got

me thinking now, but I’m not letting her know that. I happened to be near the allotments this afternoon, thought I’d pop in, see if Charlie was there, say hello, but he wasn’t there. Someone else was, though, on the neighbouring plot. Rita’s husband, canoodling with some woman. If he thought they couldn’t be seen behind the runnerbeans he was sadly mistake,. Typical bloke. His beans aren’t a patch on Charlie’s, none of his veg is up to much, probably because he’s busy doing other things…. I was just creeping away, hoping he hadn’t seen me, when he called out. ‘Sandra, hello! Don’t often see you down here.’ Bold as brass he came over, leaving the poor woman straightening herself, and kissed me on the cheek! ‘I’m sure you understand, Sandra. A man in my position needs some time for himself.’ His position! The chairman of a tiny allotment society! ‘I’m not as lucky as Charlie, a lovely wife, a son to join the business…’ I stopped listening and walked away, wondering what on earth I was going to say to Rita. Poor Rita; but she shouldn’t have tried to spoil things for me just because she’s unhappy. Charlie is unusually affectionate this evening. No, he hasn’t been drinking. ‘I am a lucky sod,’ he says, once we’ve settled on the sofa. He puts his arm round me. ‘Lovely wife and smashing son. I think there might be good news soon. Ryan’s been seeing a lass, her dad runs a stall in the market. I met her today and it took me right back to when I men you, quite bowled me over. He’s obviously inherited my eye for a fine woman.’ I’ll have to be content with that. I snuggle up against him. ‘Any chance of more of those lovely strawberries?’ Janet belongs to a local writing group. She often writes stories for children - but this light-hearted look at vegetation is definitely for the adults. Fantastic forest fly in There’s a clutch of new arrivals at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood, this spring with birds flocking for attention across the Park. Thirteen ducklings were sighted on Moors Lake as the first raft took to the water – the highest single hatching figure recorded at Moors Valley. Chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita) are being sighted regularly snapping up insects as they fly past and, with the swallows due to arrive any day the nest cameras are already relaying images of nuthatches (Sita europaea) bringing in bark peeled from the abundant pine trees to line their nest. “It’s wonderful to hear the dawn chorus as the Park wakes up each spring morning,” said Pam, a longtime bird enthusiast and Moors Valley Information Offi cer. “We are already keeping a watchful eye on many young families and I’m particularly delighted to announce the arrival of a nest of House sparrows near the railway platform at Kingsmere Station.” Once common in most gardens the House sparrow (Passer domesticus) is now Red Listed by the RSPB following a drop in recorded numbers of 71%. It is thought that part of this severe decline has been caused by a lack of insects resulting in poorly fed chicks. “At Moors Valley there are plenty of suitable nest sites for sparrows and natural food sources, and we also provide a feeding station at the back of the Visitor Centre,” added Pam. “It’s a great place to sit quietly and see how
many species you can spot.” With over 800 acres to explore and relax in the natural attractions of Moors Valley Country Park and Forest are not restricted to the spring. Wildlife enthusiasts will find the Park is one of the best places in the country to spot summer dragonflies, autumn sees the arrival of the swanringer to ring the new cygnets, while overwintering arrivals at the lake include two Amber Listed dabbling ducks, Gadwall and Teal. Moors Valley opens daily and whilst admission is free there is a charge for parking. Regular visitors can benefit from a choice of season tickets providing parking at significantly reduced rates.
