Dear Neighbours! Dare I say‌ At the time of this writing the weather has been really good! We had a great weekend away with the Cubs and Scouts camping. Having recently bought a converted van, this was an ideal opportunity. The van is used to transport all the magazines each month, but at the weekend the little fridge and cooker come into their own. I have to say I love it! Waking up in the middle of a field, not literally of course, and seeing the sun rising was really quite liberating! Hayden went climbing, abseiling, jumping up and down on trampolines, making fires and cooking apples, shooting at targets and generally having a whale of a time. I was never a girl guide myself and I have to say I think I missed out! If you have any Girl Guide or Scouting stories and photos, do send them to us and we will print them for you. Nothing like bringing good old memories back! This month inside The West Moors Directory you will find all of our local trades and business people who would love to hear from you. Better care for patients with dementia “ONE gentleman was very vocal, and we discovered he liked to sing. We bought CDs of his favourite music - Frank Sinatra and swing - and he would sing to his heart’s content. He didn’t have a bad voice either...” The use of music is just one initiative helping older patients to cope with what can be a challenging and confusing experience. Dr Sue Hazel is the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospital’s lead consultant in dementia care, the implementation lead for the National Dementia Strategy within the two hospitals. Sue says this strategy has been the catalyst for a range of change across the two hospitals, as well as at Poole Hospital, and has helped to create a new era of progressive and patientcentred care. “We already work closely with our colleagues at Poole and the merger will give us an even more unified front,” said Sue. “We will have a greater impact in areas like ward environments, staff training and community involvement.” At Poole Hospital, consultant geriatrician Dr Premila Fade highlights the flagship Lulworth ward, where changes to the ward environment have been used to support dementia patients. “We improved the layout, colours and lighting to make the ward more welcoming,” said Premila. “A hospital visit can be very confusing for patients
Dr Sue Hazel working with colleagues with dementia, and anything we can do to make the environment easier helps. “Since Lulworth was refurbished we’ve been able to use the principles on other wards too.” Memory clinics for older and frailer patients, specially trained dementia ‘champions’, volunteer mealtime companions, unique patient ‘life diaries’ to help a patient’s stay that much more individual and comforting - all these initiatives and more form part of the award-winning and innovative work in place at all three hospitals. • Poole’s dementia carers played a key role in developing the hospital-wide Human Touch campaign, with 10 golden rules advising all staff how best to ensure that patients’ privacy and dignity is respected. • As well as the Dementia Care Pathway guidelines, Bournemouth also has its own ‘top tips’ for nurses around carrying out personal care, nutrition and bedtime among others. • Volunteer mealtime companions at both trusts – as well as brightly-coloured cutlery and crockery – help encourage patients to keep up their food intake as well as create a friendly mealtime experience.

Busy Bees Learning Group for Adults with Special Needs Busy Bees Learning Group is for adults with special needs. We have been running since 2007. We have for the moment 6 students, but can go up to 12 students. At Busy Bees we are teaching them English and reading skills. In the English skills we do worksheets on different subjects, for example projects on animals, wildlife, recycling and on safety. With reading skills the students choose a book they want to read then they take it in turns to read a couple of pages each week. We are a friendly group. After everyone has arrived we do the register and
collect sub money of 50p. Then there is news time. At 8pm we stop for a break and have a cup of coffee or tea or even hot chocolate - we play some learning games too. The students take it in turns to make the drinks. We run every Thursday evening in a ten week term. It costs £20 per term to join Busy Bees. You are welcome to come and visit the group before joining so you can meet Nikki, Jan and the students. Busy Bees runs at West Moors Middle School. We start at 7pm and finish at 9pm. WEST MOORS NEIGHBOURCAR URGENT NEED FOR DRIVERS We are a voluntary organisation operating in West Moors for the purpose of providing transport for the residents of West Moors to enable them to attend local hospitals, doctors etc.
We have many elderly residents who have difficulty in travelling to appointments by other means and we are in urgent need of more drivers. We will pay for your petrol and any other ‘out of pocket’ expenses and
are insured for Public Liability. You may only be available for a limited time but we will respect this and only ask for your help within those times. Alternatively we also need help with our day to day running by answering telephone enquiries and arranging for a driver to provide transport for a client.

West Moors Parish Council News
Working for West Moors
The Parish Council initiated, led and coordinated the campaign to save the library when it was threatened with closure in 2011. We were the point of focus for villagers and we worked hard to get the Arnold Close to Ashurst Road footpath reopened in 2009. The Parish Council pays for the services of the Lengthsman, whose work helps keep West Moors clean and tidy. To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics we introduced the ‘Legacy Award’ in 2012, which helps a West Moors youth achieve their potential in sport. The Parish Council works with the Royal British Legion in organising the events on Remembrance Sunday. We got the ball rolling with the owners of the Woolslope Farm land in bringing that into public use. It is now owned by East Dorset District Council. …and, no we haven’t forgotten, we are still working towards providing allotments for West Moors residents.
Supporting West Moors The Parish Council also has a proud record of financially supporting community organisations, particularly over the last twenty years. A major boon to this has been the bequest left by Daphne Harrison, which has helped create and enhance facilities. For this we will all be forever grateful.
Over £8,000 has been given to support pre-school and school education. Along with a further £40,000 for youth organisations and activities. The Parish Council spent over another £40,000 on its own children play areas. Adult sport has been helped with over £14,000 and nearly £3,000 has gone toward adult artistic and cultural activities. The library received £99,000 in order to build the computer extension, which is available to all residents. The much treasured West Moors Memorial Hall has received over £13,000.

Wonderful Weather for Family Camp What a difference a year or two makes... Having heard the stories of a previous Family Camp being a complete washout, we were not entirely sure quite what to expect. However, the weather could not really have been better this year. With bright sunshine for most of Saturday and again first thing Sunday morning, it meant that everyone could just concentrate on having fun! There were activities galore for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who attended. From the high ropes course, where fellow scout members and parents encouraged all those participating to go as high as they possibly could, to making a fire and lighting it without a match. Cooking apples with sultanas and brown sugar in the fires, bouncing on the trampolines, navigating the activity trail and taking aim in the rifle range. All of that on just the Saturday afternoon and evening! Oh, and I forgot to mention the climbing wall where they scaled one side (by one of two routes) and then abseiled down the other side. Some even decided to do it twice - taking on both routes for the ascent! After a traditional camp fire and singsong, it was time to settle down. I am not sure how much sleep the children actually got, but they were still up and bounding with energy (mostly!) in the morning. There were further activities on the Sunday, arranged by the group leaders, which involved everyone in a variety of sports games. Then it was a quick change into uniform for the St. George’s Day Parade in Wimborne. Here over 400 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across the District gathered to help celebrate the Scouting movement.

St Martin’s Church prepares for its 110th anniversary! Yes, hard to believe but true, St Martin’s United Reformed Church has been serving the local community from its site on the corner of Station Road and Moorlands Road, West Moors, for 110 years on May 12th 2013 and the church members are preparing a series of events to mark this important occasion. The church first occupied what is now the church hall and as the village grew a new church was constructed facing Station Road in the 1920’s. This was later extended to what is on the site today. The following events are planned: 10th, 11th and 12th May 2013: St Martin’s Anniversary Flower Festival in the Church entitled ‘All things bright and beautiful’. Entry to the Flower Festival is free but donations are being accepted in aid of
Julia’s House, the children’s hospice in Broadstone. The festival is open to the public from 10am – 3pm on Friday May 10th, 10am – 4pm on Saturday May 11th and 12noon – 4pm on Sunday May 12th Sunday, 12th May 2013 at 10.30am: The Moderator of the URC Wessex Synod, The Revd Clare Downing will lead the Anniversary Worship. On 25th May 2013 at 7.00pm: The Salvation Army Brass Band Concert will entertain. Tickets £5. Tickets for the concerts are available from the church or Brewer and Brewer (Estate Agents) and Selby’s (Butcher) Everyone is welcome at any or all of the events.
