Dear Neighbours, Well we certainly had a cold spell for a while but Edition 163 spring is officially here On 20th March! A time many of us look forward to. New life, new growth and warmer weather! West Moors Home Watch We need your help! The future of West Moors Home Watch has been in doubt for some time because many members of the Committee have resigned for various reasons. The remaining members have valiantly tried to run the Watch, but trying to control an organisation which is four times larger than any other in the village has proved impossible. An Extraordinary Meeting last year resulted in enough volunteers
coming forward to enable the Chairman, Roger Long, to form a workable committee, and he had hoped to name the new members at the 2018 AGM. However, it is still proving difficult to form an effective committee and as a result another meeting is being called to try and encourage more people to come forward to help. The meeting will take place in West Moors Memorial Hall on Saturday 30th March 2019 at 2.30pm. Please do come and support... We need to look after our neighbours!
West Moors Flower Group In February we had our AGM when we reviewed all that happened in 2018 and what we had too look forward to in the forthcoming year. We then had a speaker from Cherry-tree Nursery at Bournemouth telling us about all the work they do, as cherry-tree was our charity for last year the chairman handed over a cheque. On March the 20th our demonstrator is Julie Jeans her title is “My Family and other Animals�. We always hold our meetings on the third Wednesday of every month at 10am at the Memorial hall, a warm welcome is always given to to new members and visitors. Talking about Wildlife...
Species of the month
Can you remember the last time you saw a hedgehog? Or a robin? Did you used to see them, but perhaps not recently? These are the kinds of questions that we, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), need the answers to. And we’d like the public to help us.
In 2015 DWT started a citizen science project, ‘Species of the Month’ – asking the public to let us know when they’ve seen a certain species for each month of the year. Since, not only have thousands of records flown in, but so have your anecdotes about wildlife experiences, with many of you sharing your delight from a regular or occasional wildlife visitor in your local patch or garden. Recording and looking for both rare and common wildlife allows conservationists to monitor peaks and declines in wildlife populations. Something that’s in abundance now, might not be in 5 years’ time and these records could help identify trends to understand why this has happened. Wildlife also doesn’t recognise boundaries – it goes anywhere there is habitat and food, so recording what’s in your garden or local green spaces is just as important as conservation teams recording which species are on nature reserves. So, this new year, can you ‘look out’ for wildlife? Past species we’ve been interested in finding out more about include the easily identifiable robin, brimstone, house sparrow and hedgehog. If it’s something a little rarer, we’ll give you all the information you need to be able to identify it. In March we’re looking for the bee-fly pollinator, to kick start our Get Dorset Buzzing campaign!

ABOUT THE DARK-EDGED BEE-FLY
The Dark-edged Bee-fly, or ‘Large Beefly’, looks rather like a bumble bee, with a long, straight proboscis that it uses to feed on nectar from spring flowers, such as primroses and violets. It is on the wing in the early spring, when it can often be seen in sunny patches. In flight, it is even more like a bee as it produces a high-pitched buzz. This species of bee-fly is common, but the Heath and Mottled Bee-flies are much rarer.
HOW TO IDENTIFY
Looking like a bee, the Dark-edged Bee-fly has yellowy-brown hair on its body, long, spindly legs, and a long proboscis. The wings have dark markings along their leading edges, hence it’s common name. There are several species of bee-fly in the UK, which can be very difficult to tell apart; the Darkedged Bee-fly has a dark edge, while others have plainer, translucent wings. By Sally Welbourn

Is it true a ‘Common Law Marriage’ means nothing in law? There are about 3.3 million unmarried couples currently living together in the UK. That is about 1 family in 5, and this is also the fastest growing family type. There are many reasons for choosing not to get married, but many unmarried couples do not realise that they are leaving themselves in a precarious financial position. This is because many of these couples mistakenly believe that if a couple lives together for long enough, or after they have had children together, that they will each automatically have the same legal rights and responsibilities as a married couple if they later split up or one of them dies without leaving a Will. Whilst unmarried parents do have legal and financial obligations towards any child they have together, the same does not apply between the parents themselves.
What is the process of making a Will? We spend our whole lives working to provide for ourselves and the people we love. To ensure that the assets that you have worked so hard for, pass to the people that you love, it is important to make a Will.
However, there are steps which cohabiting couples can take to protect themselves from any problems arising from separation:
Cohabitation Agreement - This records the couple’s intentions concerning property and other financial support for their children if they separate. Declaration of Trust – This records how the equity in a property, should be shared between a couple even if their financial contributions are not equal. Report urges retirees to register LPAs to avoid ‘later-life financial crisis’ A new report suggests that four-fifths of retirees who are taking advantage of pension freedoms may face a ‘later-life financial crisis’. According to a report from Zurich, the risk – estimated to affect 345,000 retirees – stems from their lack of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), potentially hindering them from obtaining financial help should they become ill or lose mental capacity. Without providing a family member or trusted friend with the legal authority to make this kind of decision, the Courts would have to become involved should the individual no longer be able to make decisions themselves. Commenting on the findings of the report Mr Skilton of Dorset & Wight Wills highlighted the important purpose which LPA’s serve in later life decision making, particularly since the pension freedoms were introduced.
He said: “Registering an LPA has become even more important since the pension reforms. Thousands of people are now making complex decisions on their pension into old age, when the risk of developing a sudden illness or condition such as dementia increases. “Despite this, many are unprepared for a sudden health shock or a decline in their mental abilities. The time to set up an LPA is well before you need it, and pension providers should be highlighting this to their customers. “With more and more people moving into drawdown, this is creating a ticking time bomb that could leave thousands of people facing a potential later-life financial crisis. It is vital that people plan for a time when managing their pension might become hard, or even impossible, and speaking to Dorset and Wight Wills is one of the best ways to do this.”

West Moors Lunch & Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday between 11.00am until 3.30pm. We welcome anyone over the age of 60 living in West Moors. We are a flourishing and friendly club so it is a privilege and enjoyable to volunteer as a helper. If anyone has one or more hours a week to help at the start, 9.45am until 11.45am, and/or end, 3.15pm until 4pm, of our day or to help serve the lunch and clear away at 12am until 1.30pm or even stay all day as do most of our helpers they will be very welcome. Duties include putting up and the setting of tables, greeting members, serving the lunches and teas, clearing the tables and washing up. Also, playing games with the members when there is no entertainment, serving afternoon tea and, at the end of the day, taking the tables down and tidying up. We would also appreciate the help of drivers to collect members from their homes in the morning, between 11.15am and 11.50am, and/or take them home at 3.30pm. If you are interested in more information about attending our club or can spare an hour or six to help please ring one of the following numbers.

Local Teachers Smash BBC 2’s Quiz giants The Eggheads to win £8k A team of teachers associated with Ferndown schools defeated T.V.’s top quiz team ‘The Eggheads’ in a fiercely contested episode hosted by Jeremy Vine. The Teachers’ team captain Brynley Elias described this battle of knowledge on February 14th as “coming very close to a second St Valentine’s Day Massacre. It was never going to be easy as the Eggheads have 10 World Quiz Championships under their belts. Our team called ‘ Eclection’ consisted of ; two visiting artists to the Ferndown Pyramid of Schools, Razwan Ul Haq and Jane Silver Corren, Eric Paddock of Corfe and Chris Turner of Canford Bottom as well as a mutual friend Alan Grant from the Carnegie Club, Skibo Castle, Scotland”.
The final round started with four of the Eclection team knocked out with Ferndown Art Teacher Brynley Elias wearing a bespoke fried egg patterned shirt taking on all five Eggheads simultaneously while answering ‘sudden death’ questions. He commented “It really is a matter of luck whether you know or can work out the correct answers but the Eggheads graciously accepted that the Ferndown based team “won fair and square” when the Eggheads were unable to correctly answer “which fruit goes into making a gimlet cocktail?” The answer was perhaps a bit too easy for them, it’s Lime!

The Story of Wimborne & Ferndown Lions Lions Clubs originated first in Chicago just over 100 years ago and gradually spread to Europe and then worldwide. Our club was founded in 1969 by Albert Whittle, who also happened to be a national speed skating champion in his youth. Initially known as Wimborne Lions, the club expanded to also cover Ferndown soon afterwards. Since then we have endeavoured to help the local community in various ways. Funds raised are carefully allocated by our welfare committee who have an unrivalled collective experience of local needs. In conjunction with Lions Clubs international, some of our funds also go to emergency relief after disasters in other countries. Our funds are often used to help

About our Club today Established half a century ago, the club exists to serve the community by fund-raising and donating the funds to those in need, whilst enjoying a full social program along the way. Gardening Tips
On Your Plot Getting the upper hand Spring should really be on its way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too!
Jobs for March :-
• Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. • Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) • Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. • Plant first early potatoes later in the month. • Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. • Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6°C are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will
help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeds, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Vivamente Voices extend a warm invitation to their fifth annual singing event “Come and Sing!”, is an all-day event with something for everyone regardless of whether or not you have any singing experience. The day starts with a fun vocal warm up followed by a choice of workshops to indulge in including, choral, barbershop and musical theatre. The festival of singing day concludes with an evening concert showcasing the different singing styles, confirmed guests are The Southern Union Chorus, barbershop quartet Chromatix, Cantilena Voices and soloist Paul Michael. The event takes place on Saturday 30th March at St John’s Church, Wimborne.

Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
