Oakhurst Trek for Charlotte Charlotte is a pupil in Reception at Oakhurst Community First School, who lives in West Moors with her Mum, Sarah. Last May she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Sarah has organised different fundraising events under the banner of “Team Charlotte”. Oakhurst School wants to support Sarah and Charlotte and are delighted that school secretary, Mrs Helen Stevens, will be representing the school and will be trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2013 to raise funds. Their aim is to raise £5,000 for CLIC Sargent and Team Charlotte. The school council also organised a sponsored “trek” around the field to support the fundraising effort. Fly-Mo Medium distance British talent Mo Farah eyes up Olympic glory. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past seven years, you will be aware that all eyes are firmly fixed on London this year as the capital plays host to the greatest show on earth – the Olympic Games. But as the nation prepares to fix its eyes on the once in a lifetime sporting extravaganza, for the home grown athletes competing the prospect of career defining and life changing moments grow ever nearer. Few will be feeling that more keenly than Mo Farah. Ask any athletics fan, even the more casual ones, and they will tell you that Farah ranks among Britain’s best hopes of gold medal success come August: after all, Farah is the current 5,000m world champion and currently holds a whole host of records, including the European track record for 10,000m and the British indoor record for 3,000m. Now living in America in Portland, 29year-old Farah’s mind is completely focussed on the prize. “The training is going well,” Farah confirms. “I’ve just come back from high altitude training in Kenya and the other athletes and I there are doing broker training together, which is going well.

Mo Farah “I’ve not done anything different to what I have done over the last couple of years – I always train with Kenyans. I used to train at St. Martins College and it was there I saw some Kenyan athletes doing their thing, which was very different to what I was doing. I was still into going out, having a good time, but they would be in bed by 8pm. I ended up moving in with them, just learning things from them. It really helped me improve; it was exactly what I needed.” To use running parlance, the Olympic

You’ve just got to be strong and do everything that you can. I’m definitely looking forward to it, but you just have to try not to put that pressure on yourself.” Farah’s story is an uplifting one that is in tune with the Olympic spirit. Born in Somalia, he moved from Mogadishu to London aged eight able to speak only the most basic English. “I could say ‘excuse me’ and ‘where is the toilet?’” he says “which made it hard, but my cousin was in the same class so I got through it.” Yet despite that tough start, it was actually at school that Farah’s talents were spotted. More interested in football (“I only wanted to play on the wing for Arsenal when I was at school”), his PE teacher Alan Watkinson nevertheless encouraged Farah to take up running after being impressed with the potential he displayed at Feltham Community College. “I’d never done any running in Africa, even though I lived there until I was eight, so I didn’t even think about doing it before.” Soon, though, his potential began to become realised. He won five school titles and made a major breakthrough by winning the 5000m at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 2001. Farah’s career since turning senior in 2005 has had its share of disappointments

as well as glory, with his performance in the Beijing Olympics in 2008 a huge letdown. “I had to regroup from that setback – really reassess and come back stronger. And to be fair, I’ve done just that.” Farah has upped his game considerably, with 2011 his most successful year to date, culminating in two medals at the World Championships - silver in the 10,000m and gold in the 5,000m. How would Farah rank his chances of Olympic glory? “It will be difficult, of course. The biggest rivals are the Kenyans and the other Europeans, and I’ve just got to do everything I can. I’m not going to make any predictions. I am desperate to make it onto the world stage but I can’t say how it will go. It’s a long way from scaring deer in Richmond Park where I used to train!” But even away from his own medal hopes, Farah appreciates the opportunity hosting the Olympic Games gives London and the country at large, and is looking forward to what should be an incredible experience. “Yeah, it’s going to be amazing. To have the Olympics right on your doorstep is absolutely amazing. But you’ve got to take that advantage of having the home crowd along with you. Talking about wildlife with
Butterflies There are currently under 60 species of butterflies in the UK, and many of them are facing a serious decline in numbers. Development of our countryside and changes in farming methods have led to extensive losses of butterfly habitats and, despite conservation efforts, some species might even face extinction. Butterflies are important pollinators and, as they are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment and the weather, they are good indicators of anything having gone awry; a decline in a butterfly population indicates that a habitat is becoming less suitable for wildlife overall. As a species, they are not very adaptable, and many wildlife reserves around the country are dedicated to creating and conserving suitable habitats for endangered species. We are lucky that Dorset is still a haven for many species; in fact it is one of the best places in the country to see butterflies. Na t ur e r e s er ve s i n t h e c o u nty a re managed for the benefit of butterflies, including rare and threatened species such as marsh fritillary (try at Kingcombe Meadows or maybe Powerstock Common), silver studded blue (heathland reserves) or Adonis blue (King Barrow Quarries on the Isle of Portland). Gardening with butterflies in mind provides ever more im p o rt a nt ha b it at s. Butterflies are attracted

to nectar rich gardens where plants such as primrose, buddleia and thyme flourish in sunny but sheltered spots, and by letting wildflowers grow in abundance and avoiding chemicals, you will further encourage these welcome visitors. Powerstock Common has been named one of the top reserves in the country for woodland butterflies in a guide published by The Wildlife Trusts at wildlifetrusts.org/woodlandbutterflies. WEST MOORS ART SOCIETY A friendly group of artists meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings with a demonstration given by a professional artist on the second Monday of each month. WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP We are a very friendly flower club who meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10.00am in the West Moors Memorial Hall. West Moors Flower Group will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary on the 18th July when our Member Diana Rickman (left) and West Moors Librarian, Angela Mcveigh (right), members will be celebrating with a lunch with the arrangement that Diana did followed by a talk by Susie Edwards. Her title is for NAFFAS Day on 4th May “4 Weddings and a breakdown”. The flower Group was started by the late Brenda Dear in her home in Pinehurst road, when she invited her friends to join her in the Art of Flower Arranging it continued at Pinehurst road until she could no longer fit everyone in, then it moved to the Memorial hall where it is today and is still going strong . MURDER MYSTERY PICNIC & WALK IN THE CORFE CASTLE RUINS Gates open 6.30pm for walk at 7.30pm July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 Yes, it’s back! The highly acclaimed Double Act Murder Mystery Walks are back this year. Once again with thanks to the National Trust for access to the Castle itself. The gates will open at 6.30pm for you to bring your own picnic and dine alfresco in the outer bailey before the mystery starts at 7.30pm. Bulky items can be left near the exit for collection when you leave the Castle. All we ask is that you take any rubbish home with you. What could be more atmospheric for a murder mystery than the ruins at twilight? However the walk will involve steep rough paths and steps and we must leave the castle ruins before dark for safety reasons. So anyone taking part does so at their own risk. Due to the popularity of the past walks and necessity to restrict numbers for safety it is strongly recommended that early bookings be made by purchasing tickets at the National Trust Shop, The Square, Corfe Castle or by phone on 01929 480921. Tickets are £7 for adults & £6 for children.

The Shire Reeve has been dispatched to Corfe to investigate illegal furze cutting on the common, but he uncovers sinister conspiracies and dark evil deeds that threaten to destroy not only the peaceful idyll of the Dorset countryside but also to tear apart the young Christian nation now known as England. Being the dark ages, suspected miscreants were often subjected to trial by ordeal to prove their innocence - not a pretty sight! All will be revealed along with many other surprises at Corfe Castle on July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th & August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 at 6.30pm.
