Help Divert crisis – Volunteers Needed! facebook.com/West-Moors-Youth-Club-145887128858370 After nearly 40 years serving the young people of West Moors, the West Moors Youth Club is at risk of closure at the end of the current academic year unless they can harness local support. The crisis is the result of the resignation of a number of Trustees and members of the Management Committee, all of whom have served the Youth Club for many years. “In order for the Youth Club to continue we need to find a number of volunteers to join the Committee”, said Kurt Hallam, the outgoing Chairman. “Ideally, we need younger people who have the ideas, vision and enthusiasm to take the Youth Club into the next ten years. Preferably a parent or parents of young teenagers who know what the young people of today need.” The West Moors Youth Club was founded in 1982 and has its own purposebuilt club house on Fryer Field and employs two professional and qualified Youth Workers to supervise the sessions currently held on Monday evenings for Year 7 and Tuesday evenings for those in year 8. The club aims at providing a range of activities that are both stimulating and fun. Did you know that Keyneston Mill, located in Blandford Forum, is one of the, if not the very largest private botanic gardens in the country? This remarkable 50-acre working estate is home to Parterre Fragrances and more than one thousand plants are grown for the purpose of creating beautiful perfumes. Although the botanic gardens are grown f or perfume, Keyneston Mill is also open to the public to enjoy with workshops, a cafe, scented garden tours and even special cinema evenings. Whilst the Dorset coast is arguably one of the most beautiful in Britain, Weymouth Harbour and its surrounding coastline is well accustomed to Shipwrecks and tragedy. In fact, one shipwreck in particular is regarded as the most famous, The Earl of PHOTO: MATT LILLYWHITE Abergavenny was a large East Indian Company ship. Tragically the ship had left Portsmouth just days before before running into the treacherous Shambles oﬀ the Isle of Portland before ﬂoundering in Weymouth Bay on the 5th February 1805. Thankfully more than a hundred people were rescued but not before 263 lost their lives, just a mile and half from land, including the Captain, notably Capt. John Wordswoth, brother of the poet William Wordsworth.

Statement Statham Actor Jason Statham on an all-action career that continues to thrive. Jason Statham returns to our screens in 2021 with one, perhaps two new movies. Spy 2 – the follow-up to the 2015 original – is testament to the actor pursuing a more comedic line of drama as he moves into his ﬁfties, while Wrath of Man delivers a steely, police-driven drama that sees our main man fully back in combat mode. “This is what I do, and I’m proud of that,” he says. “I keep myself in shape, I deliver in my roles and I move on to the next thing. “I will always commit fully to a project, which is why I’ve always done my own stunts over the years. I think if you’re going to be that person and that character, then embrace it fully.” For so long, Statham has been the perfect blend of smouldering, moody, conﬁdent and confrontational. He has styled his own persona very much around the types

of characters he plays in Hollywood blockbusters. Yet whether a gun-toting criminal on the streets of London, a Bond-esque spy circumnavigating the globe, or simply the man who performs wheelspins better than even Vin Diesel, Statham, who is married to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, is constantly striving for the next big one. Yet would he ever stray away from the action genre… could he ever perhaps entertain something as leftfield as, say, a period drama? “Listen, the guys who put that stuff together make very good films,” he laughs. “I mean, the attention to detail is incredible, and the scriptwriting is on another planet. I just don’t know if they’re going to offer me a part in one of those films! “That said, I don’t have the refusal wall up for anything, I’m

open to all quality stuff, if somebody wants to send a great romantic comedy my way, I’ll be the first to read it.” So it seems that Statham the action man will continue for a good while longer. “That’s just the type of actor I am. I would struggle to do the cerebral, emotional stuff – that’s not to say I’m not like that at home, and around the people I love, but it’s true, I do have a certain image on film now and I’m happy with that.” It’s an image brought about by his father’s incredible encouraging spirit, and harnessed through his attempts to qualify for the Olympics as an expert diver. “I came third in three Olympic trials, I came close. So close. Every board qualifies the first two divers so I was just short three times.” The fact he has excelled in a totally different profession is not just consolation, but testament to Statham’s drive to achieve. Job done.

Talking about Wildlife...

Summer wildlife At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start… At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. Over at Chesil, the little tern project is in full swing, with the first egg appearing on 20th May, nestled in the iconic pebbles of Chesil Beach. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars! British Hedgehog

Hedgehogs - Written by Nicky Rowberry Preservation Society Hedgehogs were voted Britain’s Favourite Wild Mammal, but despite that they are in trouble and numbers have been declining. The decline is so bad that they’ve recently been classiﬁed as “Vulnerable to Extinction”. Often referred to as the “gardener’s friend”, most of us are thrilled to spot one in the garden, but it’s becoming an increasingly rare sight. • Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom and there are lots of ways to help. Here’s a few ideas: • Create 13cm square gaps in your fence as a ‘hedgehog highway’ and ask your neighbours to do the same. • Oﬀer meaty cat, dog or hedgehog food, or some cat biscuits alongside a bowl of water at night. • Make your garden wildlife friendly – don’t use slug pellets or pesticides and leave one corner “a bit wild”. • Create a log pile in your garden, to provide natural shelter and food – don’t disturb it. Or maybe put out a hedgehog house. • Check for hedgehogs before strimming or mowing & check compost heaps before sticking a big fork in there too!

• If you’ve got a pond, make sure hedgehogs can get out if they fall in. Create sloping edges, or failing that provide ramps or steps up. Why not become a Hedgehog Champion? Hedgehog Street is run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society in partnership with the People’s Trust for Endangered Species. Just go to www.hedgehogstreet.org and sign up – it’s free and you’ll get access to lots of hedgehog information. If you see any hedgehogs out during the day looking lethargic, wobbly, injured or covered in flies, they need urgent help. Get them indoors into a big deep box. Keep them somewhere calm and quiet until you can get help. Put an old towel in the box and ideally a warm wrapped hot water bottle – with enough space so that they have room to get off the hot water bottle if they get too hot. Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. All good estate planning nowadays considers the difference between owning your home as joint tenants or as tenants in common. If you own your home as Joint Tenants; when one of you dies the ownership of the home passes by the Law of Survivorship and not by your Will. Therefore, the surviving partner will automatically own 100% of the property. This sounds right to most people. BUT should the surviving partner need care in the future, the Local Authority can take everything they own (including their home) to pay for the care fees, leaving just £14,250 to be inherited by children and grandchildren.

There is an alternative.

Nowadays many couples choose to own their home as Tenants in Common where each partner will own 50% of the family home. This provides for many benefits. Firstly, it allows you to legally leave your share of the property in your Will to whoever you wish. A properly written Will can ensure that your half of your house will eventually pass to your children even if your widow re-marries. Unmarried cohabiting couples or relatives living together can also use this means of ownership as a way of minimising their Inheritance Tax exposure. It can also help with long-term care costs. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

Charity Plant Sale Raises over £2000 for Julia’s House

Green-fingered Catherine and Rodger Andrew held a community plant sale from their home in Colehill near Wimborne this week, raising more than £2,000 over three days for the children’s hospice charity, Julia’s House. The kind-hearted couple revealed that they have been growing plants to sell since the beginning of last year. “It started as small event,” explains Rodger, “but Catherine has such green fingers. She produced some for last year and then it couldn’t happen because of lockdown so we had lots to sell. It was 18 months of hard work for Catherine, but when we totalled it up it was well worth the effort. We have been astounded by the response and the amount raised exceeded our expectations by an incredible amount. We even had one youngster carrying Alan Titchmarsh’s gardening book so he could get the right plants! The weather could have been better but we sold out of virtually everything.”

The couple gave thanks to those who helped over the three days or donated plants, and paid tribute to those who supported the sale, saying “Well done, Colehillians – your generosity knows no bounds!” Laura Maidment, Public Fundraising Manager for Julia’s House said, “We’d like to say a massive thank to Catherine and Rodger for the amazing support they have shown us. The money raised will go directly to helping the families of children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in Dorset and Wiltshire, who have had an incredibly tough time during the lockdowns.” The couple adds, “We chose Julia’s House as it is an excellent local charity and a most worthwhile cause. Lots of people who came to the sale were delighted that we chose Julia’s House, and the fact that the children are the ultimate beneﬁciaries stirs us to (perhaps) start now for next year.”

Welcome to the July Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include a close meeting of Venus and Mars, and the bright star Arcturus, ‘Guardian of the Bear’. International Space Station The ISS is visible every night throughout July, however, only after mid-month will sightings not require an extremely early morning start. Please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town.

Object of the Month In May’s Object of the Month we used the bowl of the Plough asterism to locate the North Star, Polaris. This month we use the opposite end of the plough, the handle, to ﬁnd the fourth and sixteenth brightest stars in the sky. Arcturus, translated from the Greek meaning ‘Guardian of the Bear’, is a 7-billion-year-old red giant star in the constellation of Boötes, and the fourth brightest star in the sky. Indigenous Polynesians know it by a diﬀerent name: Ana-tahua-taata-metua-te-tupu-mavae, one of the ten heavens. Arcturus is a very fast-moving star, travelling at 76 miles per second, and will disappear from naked-eye view in around 150,000 years. Continuing along the same curved line in the sky leads to Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo. Latin for ‘ear of wheat’, it is a double star located 250 light years away. The two stars in the system are so close they orbit each other once every 4 days.

Mercury Visible in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of July, Mercury is very low in the northeast around 4am.

Venus The ‘Evening Star’ is visible low in the western evening twilight until 10.30pm. Over the course of the month it moves towards Mars until they lie extremely close on 12th July, from whence they part. At this current time, Venus is over two hundred times brighter than Mars (see ﬁgure). They are also joined by the Moon for a pleasing vista on the 12th. Mars Visible at similar times to Venus but appearing much dimmer, the red planet is visible low in the western evening twilight until 10.30pm.

Jupiter and Saturn Our two largest and most spectacular planets are ﬁnally back on view in our evening skies. They can be spotted low in the southeast around midnight at the beginning of the month, moving to 11pm toward month end. Moon This month’s Full Moon on July 24th is traditionally known as the Thunder Moon. Native American tribes also call this full moon ‘the Moon when the buﬀalo bellow’. In Europe and other countries, July’s full moon is known by many names, including the Buck Moon, Hay Moon and Raspberry Moon. 28

Understanding Investments:

What are investments and why should you own them? Interest rates are at all time lows. Cash accounts and NS&I savings are paying under 1% per annum, and fixed rate bonds are offering significantly lower rates on maturity. At the same time inflation is rising, being fuelled by pent up demand, low inventories, rising commodity and oil prices and restricted supply. Inflation is the most topical concern right now with some viewing recent rises as temporary, and others concerned inflation could remain high. Taking away all the views and noise, the fact remains that for retirees on a fixed income, inflation is and always has been the greatest threat to a comfortable retirement. I call it “The Silent Assassin” because at 3% per annum, prices double every 24 years. What can you do to counter these challenges? Cash/NS&I: These provide security and liquidity, albeit at low returns. Sufficient cash should be retained for any expenditure within the next 3-5 years, plus a buffer for emergencies. By keeping sufficient cash, it allows money that is invested for a sufficient time to do the job you want it to do without needing to access it. Investment Asset Classes: Fixed interest bonds are low risk and earn interest that should exceed cash savings rates. However, they don’t increase with inflation and the capital value can go down if interest rates rise or on reduced demand. Inflation linked bonds offer interest and capital appreciation in line with inflation, although the purchase prices can go up and down depending on demand, usually linked to the outlook for inflation. Property has the ability to generate an income, and the capital value can appreciate in value over time, so property can be a good hedge against inflation. However, it is less liquid and can go through periods of decline. Shares or funds that invest in shares allow you to own small pieces of companies. Well run companies should increase their profits each year

and you receive a share of those profits by payment of a dividend, or Howard Goodship by the company reinvesting those profits and growing them further. Over time, share prices are linked to the company profits so if profits are rising, so should the dividends and value of the shares. In the short-term, the share price can fluctuate up and down significantly with demand and investor sentiment. These can provide some inflation protection. This is normally achieved by spreading your portfolio across a wide range of assets and carefully researched investments and managing this blend through ongoing reviews. We ensure your portfolio is spread across a wide range of investments that tend to behave differently to one another, smoothing out the peaks and troughs of investing for you. Life before Lego to open at Wimborne Model Town A unique exhibition of Britain’s best remembered building toys is to be opened by Wimborne Mayor, Councillor Kelly Webb, on Wednesday 30 June. Developed at Wimborne Model Town by model historian and author Brian Salter, the exhibits trace the development of model building systems from pre-war Erectico to Bayko, Brickplayer and Kiddicraft. Other key features are twin scale dioramas of model buildings, vehicles and trains representing the Triang era of the late 1950s and early 60s. All have been rescued and restored to concours condition following years of painstaking work and recall toy shop stock from 60 years ago. WMT chairman, Iain Stevenson commented: “Despite the frustrations of lockdown, Brian has created a superb display of model buildings, cars and trains that very much

complement the era of Wimborne Model Town. We are very grateful for all his hard work which has provided a wonderful indoor facility for our visitors to enjoy”.

working tribe called the Durotruges around 500 BC, Badbury Rings is now a place to take a leisurely walk, have a picnic, run around with the dog on a lead, or sit and gaze at the sunset falling from the earth as we see it. We parked in the National Trust car park and gazed at the circular clump of trees, chomping cows and rolling hills surrounding us, as we munched our food in the comfort of Daichi’s ‘diner’. What is great about a campervan is that you can park almost anywhere and have a full 360 degree view of your surroundings whether it is raining or sunny. You can have a picnic at a table, you don’t have to wait for one to be free, and you don’t have to ‘lug’ all the heavy bags to where you are going. It is all there for you, in the cupboard, knives, forks, spoons and even plates. It is all so very sophisticated and easy. Daichi loves to make life fun

and easy. He has a fridge, but that needs to be connected to the mains, so ice packs keep the food cool while we travel. He has a gas hob too, so the whistling kettle is a real treat, especially for a connoisseur coffee drinker like myself! Once we were fed and watered, we ventured out to walk around the remains of the Iron Age Hill Fort encircled with its three concentric circles of ditches and ramparts to protect the inhabitants from their enemies. It is a fascinating place with great views across Dorset’s green, rolling countryside, but what intrigued me the most was the atmosphere inside the Hill Fort. You can almost hear the children playing, the farmers working and the chink and clinging of metal being formed and welded into tools and weapons. Of course, that is where the Iron Age got its name from, as it is the era of iron. The average life expectancy of these people was just 25! No wonder they seemed to have a spirit of fun and frolic – better make the most of the short life they had, I say. They were also ruled by Warrior

Kings and the rivalry between tribes must have had everything to do with the life expectancy! Now, it is purported that there is the ghost of a Warrior King who haunts these hills, but maybe that was visioned after a whisky or two… who knows… Daichi prefers that spirit to the ghostly one! We could see the Isle of Wight in the far distance, Kingston Lacy House, that once owned the Rings and a Chinook helicopter flew right overhead. There were birds of prey swooping around and wonderful looking fungi on stumps of trees lying flat on the ground. How amazing to see so many different things all in one place. It is ideal for the young and old alike. Great to run madly around to tire out those youngsters, or wander slowly for us oldies. Badbury Rings is an easy place to get to if you want some space and a bit of an historical atmosphere. There is the poppy field not far away too, at this time of year. Daichi left with a smile on his bonnet. Where will he take us next month I wonder…? By Debbie Corney

Sun Savvy Your guide to protecting your skin throughout the warmer months. Preparation If you want to be sun savvy, then preparation is the key. Just as you wouldn’t leave a new-born in the sun without protection, your own skin is also more vulnerable after a winter spent locked inside, which is why wearing a good SPF is vital. Fortunately, many makeup and skincare brands now include sunscreen in their moisturisers and foundations, making it far easier to include facial protection in your day-to-day routine - it may seem like a strange concept to wear sun cream throughout the year, but ultraviolet rays are always present and penetrate clouds. Cost As with most things in life you get what you pay for, and it really is worth investing in some top-notch sun protection. Firstly, it is important to understand what the SPF factor means. Contrary to popular

belief, a higher SPF doesn’t mean that a factor 50 offers a higher level of protection than say, a factor 15. This is because the SPF number tells you how much longer it will take for your skin to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. So if you’re wearing 50 SPF, it will take 50 times longer for your skin to turn red than if you weren’t wearing it. Secondly, make sure your sunscreen offers ‘broadspectrum protection’ rather than just SPF which only measures your skin’s ability to block UVB rays – these rays damage the outer layers of your skin and can cause sunburn and even blistering. Broad spectrum products, however, also protect your skin from UVA rays which are the more insidious of the two as they penetrate your skin at a deeper level and are proven to

contribute to the development of skin cancer. Be individual Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is tailored to your individual needs. If you have sensitive skin or want to use it on your face, then invest in a product that is sympathetic to those needs. Or if the sun cream is for your children who are spending the day by the pool, make sure it is waterproof and easy to apply. Be realistic While sunscreen works wonders, there are areas it cannot protect, such as your scalp and your eyes. If you’re not a hat person you may want to consider a head scarf or bandana, and when it comes to your eyes, well… who doesn’t look cool in a pair of sunglasses? For really scorching summer days you may want to consider avoiding the sun altogether; and remember, there is no such thing as a safe suntan!

D-Day Challenge to Support Air Cadets and RAFA On Saturday 5 June, the anniversary of D-day, Air Cadet William Avey-Hebditch (15) from Wimborne, together with his father Dan, will embark on a sponsored challenge to cycle 179 miles in 12 hours as part of the RAFA Rides 2021: Goes Global! Challenge. Organised by the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) the personal challenge devised by William and his father reﬂects an important element of the D-day landings 77 years ago. The distance chosen for the ride equals the 179 miles travelled in Horsa gliders by D Company, Ox & Bucks Light Infantry from Tarrant Rushton airﬁeld in Dorset to Pegasus Bridge in France.

Furniture...and Other Dangers

by Toby Wren It seemed a perfectly reasonable request when my wife suggested that we might move the furniture, even though I recalled how some time before, and with much trepidation, we had taken many hours to achieve the present arrangement.

Furniture, it seemed, was possessed of a chameleon-like quality and quite able to change in appearance when moved. The easy chair that reclined innocuously in a sheltered corner of the room had become unsightly… grotesque even. It would need to be moved and this would involve a complete movement of everything, so I was informed! I was also well aware of the more subtle implications that frequently accompanied a moving of the furniture. Books left to gather dust on a shelf unit would be suddenly usurped in favour of some item of pottery or other ornament. Curtains too, once hung with great pride, would often become drab and unsuitable, as if suddenly ageing overnight and requiring immediate replacement. The ramifications of moving furniture appeared to radiate like ripples on a pool of water throughout the whole house. In extreme cases, moving furniture had even resulted in the apparent need for a flurry of decorating activity - the frantic addition of wallpaper and a splashing of paint… a truly daunting prospect. Clearly the moving of furniture was no small matter, nor to be undertaken in a casual or flippant manner.

Yet I had to admit that many summers had passed since we last rearranged our happy home, and who was I to question how it was that the then perfect arrangement no longer held quite such an exalted position? It might still look alright to me, a mere man, but obviously it languished in dire need of a woman’s touch. “Perhaps…” began the first suggestion, “perhaps we could move the settee over there,” she said, and so it had begun. She was pointing vaguely in the direction of the far end of the room. Painfully I obeyed, almost doing myself a mischief as I skidded on a hidden toy that had lain lurking and waiting my unwary tread. “Daddy found my car and tread on it!” shouted my son and heir. “He nearly broke it too!” “I’m sure he didn’t mean to,” reassured my wife. “Could daddy move the settee back this way little now and not tread on anything else?” “But that will put it in front of the door, dearest,” said daddy. “Well, let’s try it anyway shall we?” With faint muttering, I followed orders. In fact there was to follow a great deal of muttering and muffled exclamations of pain and horror that afternoon, although I will not elaborate further on this period of strained muscles and even greater strained nerves. Suffice to say the hours passed slowly, although I gained the impression that we were

making progress. With so much movement of furniture it was difficult at times to determine whether we were moving forward or backward… I knew only that there was much moving - a little like a game of chess, I suppose, where all seems confused until the conclusion. Eventually the lady of the house was satisfied. I collapsed in the chair and surveyed the new arrangement with vague interest. Her face lit up with a big smile and she announced, “That’s it - much better. What do you think?” I had been momentarily lost in thought at that time wondering how much weight I might have lost and whether I might ever be able to rise from the chair again. Not wishing to ruin the moment I was happy to provide a cheerful response. “It looks fine there although there is just one tiny problem – we seemed to have blocked the door into the room.” “Yes dear I know,” she said, “but it would seem such a pity to have to move all the furniture again especially now we have it perfectly arranged.” So that was that - what could I possibly say that might change the situation? I will be moving the door next weekend!

Let’s Get Wild Turn your garden into a veritable paradise for the birds and the bees by creating a wildflower meadow. Simple, environmentally beneficial and stunningly beautiful. Not only is it easy to create your own little wildflower meadow, it’s also fast, meaning that any patch of land you have bare can be germinated in a matter of months. That means you could be gazing out over a carpet of poppies, cornflowers, daisies, cowslips and bluebells as summer draws to a close. Perennial flowers will flourish in uncultivated soil, whereas cornfield flowers will do better in richer earth. You can buy ready-mixed seeds which will be tailored to certain variables such as soil containing heavy clay, boggy land by the pond’s edge, or even seeds that are specifically combined to provide the maximum nourishment to bees – such pollinators include Sunflower, Borage, Evening Primrose and Corn Marigold. Make sure you thoroughly weed the soil before scattering your seeds - you need 1g per square metre of pure wildflower seeds and 5g per square metre of grass and wildflower meadow seeds – and ensure the earth remains consistently moist thereafter. MUST-HAVE WILDFLOWERS FOR YOUR GARDEN Forget-me-not This lovely lilac biennial bloom not only adds a spray of colour to your lawn, but it also attracts various pollinators, and its leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of several moth species bringing an abundance of insect life to your garden.

Hemp Agrimony This noble native perennial looks rather striking when grown amid other more colourful wildflower varieties. Preferring the shade, it grows tall and untamed and provides a delectable nectar for butterflies. Ox-eye Daisies Tall and gracious, these white and yellow beauties are easy to grow – they thrive in the sun – though they can also overwhelm a plot if not kept in check. Cornflowers Cornflowers bring a touch of exotic elegance to your flowerbed. Surprisingly hardy, they flower from late spring into brilliant white flowers with deep purple stamens that bees, unsurprisingly, find irresistible. Common Knapweed Though some may view it as a pest, this nonetheless brings its own rugged loveliness to your wildflower crop and also will

provide food for birds if seed heads are left over winter. Honeysuckle With its vibrant white, pink and yellow petals and unusually long tendrils, one might be forgiven for thinking this a flower from another planet, but this fragrant bloom is as British and as iconic as they come. Foxgloves Bright, abundant and beautiful with its tubular purple flowers, these are ideal for the back of your miniature flower meadow as they grow tall and regal attracting many a bumblebee.

West Moors Neighbourcar needs your help! Rarest colours Beige, green, purple and yellow are thought to be the most unpopular car colours in the UK. Rare tones can give outgoing, outlandish and eccentric car users a lot of fun, but those same colours’ lack of popularity is as much to do with a low resale value… that is, unless you want to invest in a respray!

Complete guide to composting To get your compost really producing the type of nutrient-rich humus that will bring lawns, beds and green areas flourishing back to life, here are a few useful tips. Carbon vs nitrogen Getting the balance between these two correct will ultimately define just how good your compost is. Carbon matter includes. It is this carbon layer that will give your compost space, lightness and a fluffy consistency. Nitrogen-heavy matter, on the other hand, includes food waste, manure and kitchen waste, and provides a heavier, protein-rich presence. For the best compost, aim for one-third carbon (branches, stems, wood, paper bags, coffee filters, egg shells, wood ash and more) versus twothirds nitrogen (food waste, manure and kitchen scraps, which provide a heavier, protein-rich presence). A few don’ts Don’t put meat, bones or fish scraps in your compost. Not only will they smell, they’ll also attract pests and you’ll soon

ﬁnd yourself clearing up the remnants of foxes, cats and other night roamers. Obviously it’s smart to keep weeds or diseased plants away from your mix; while beware banana peels and orange rinds, as these may contain pesticide residues. Straw law Many believe straw is the secret weapon where composting is concerned. It’s a great way to ensure a good carbon/nitrogen balance, whilst adding oxygen space. You can also cut out some of the labour-heavy turning (see below) if you have a respectably high straw content. Getting started Find a space on bare earth so that worms and other organisms are able to access and aerate your compost, all the while transferring it into your beds.

Lay twigs or straw down, then begin to build your compost layer by layer, remembering your carbon and nitrogen mix, and ensuring plenty of gaps are left in between levels so that oxygen can work its magic. Watering the compost can be a good idea, and covering the top with a sheet will help it retain moisture and heat, as well as preventing it from becoming drenched by downpours of rain. Is the air there? The big requirement for composting is oxygen, and its ability to ﬁnd a route through the kitchen and yard waste you are disposing of; therefore aerate using a shovel once a week. Spreading When you have accessed your compost, spread at thickness of up to one inch before adding a wood mulch layer to lock in all that nutrient-rich goodness. Your plants, lawns and produce will love the beneﬁts and your garden will be a more beautiful and productive entity because of it.

No-Knead Bread Introduction

When Sullivan Street Bakery owner Jim Lahey came up with this recipe for no-knead bread – published in The New York Times in 2009 – it caused quite the stir. Surely something so simple couldn’t yield the kind of ﬂavourful crust and airy middle we expect to buy from an artisan baker? Well, just give it a try and see for yourself…

• 3 cups of all-purpose ﬂour (405g or 14.3oz) • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt • 1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast • 1 1/2 cups/350ml of room temperature water

Top Tips • If you don’t have a cast-iron pot, you can improvise using a pizza stone and an upturned stainless-steel bowl, as maintaining a high temperature is essential for creating that desirable crust, you will need something to trap warm air around your bread. • Don’t worry if you need to leave your dough to rise longer than the stated time. Up to 24 hours is ﬁne as it is this waiting time that allows the yeast to ferment and create air bubbles without kneading. • Don’t be afraid to improvise. Whether you want to try
