Amberwood House Open Day supports Local Young People As part of National Care Home Day last month Amberwood House Care Home in Ferndown hosted a commemoration of the ‘Battle of Waterloo,’ the proceeds of which will be donated to local charity, the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. A great afternoon was had by all with superb entertainment, tea and cakes and even a ‘Welly Throwing Competition.’ The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was privileged to be chosen as ‘Charity of the Year’ for the second year running by Amberwood House. Care Home Manager, Maggie

Tomlin, recently presented a cheque for £1000 to the charity, the proceeds of their 2014 fundraising and Linda and Pete Thornton were delighted to hear that the JTYAF had been selected by the residents for another year. Pete Thornton commented, “We have close family connections with Amberwood and we were very touched to hear that the residents had chosen to support John’s Foundation for another year. It’s lovely to see the older generation helping local young people and we are so grateful for their continued support.”

Talking about Wildlife...

The Magic of Butterflies Butterflies are one of the most idolised insects in Britain. Their beautiful colourings add to the landscape and bring a smile to those who catch sight of them. The ideal habitat of a butterfly is dependent on the time of year and the species. Some species thrive in lowland forests, whilst others prefer wetlands, mountains or grasslands. Not all butterflies live in one single habitat, however. Despite the decline of butterflies in the last few decades, Dorset remains a stronghold, with summer the best time to enjoy the colour of the forty-odd resident species around the county. Britain’s most widespread blue butterfly, the Common Blue, is visible all summer long, breeding twice a summer in the South. Dorset’s rich landscape of grasslands, heaths and meadows is ideal for supporting this easily recognisable butterfly. The large majority of butterflies only survive for two to four weeks, but those who survive through winter - monarch butterflies and mourning cloaks - can live up to 9 months. This means they have to pass on their genes quickly. Butterflies identify a suitable mate by the markings on their wings; each species has a unique marking. Certain species also have specific flight patterns, which they use

in courtship. Both the male and female will assess the performance of their potential mate and will judge whether or not they are a suitable companion. Butterflies taste with their feet and only consume liquids. Their diets generally consist of nectar and mud puddles, which contain important nutrients. This summer, some of the best Dorset Wildlife Trust reserves to see butterflies are: Fontmell Down nature reserve, Powerstock Common, Portland quarries nature reserves, Haydon Hill and Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. I have saved up more than him and will be paying the bigger share of the deposit. If we should break up and sell the property, is there anything that I can do to protect my money?

Yes there is. You can protect your share of the deposit by making a Declaration of Trust with your boyfriend when you purchase. This document can set out your intentions with regards to the proceeds of sale.

How will my Executors know what assets are in my estate on my death? I am a very private person and I do not wish them to have this information during my lifetime. The simplest thing is to keep a list of all your assets somewhere at your home and to advise your Executors where this list can be found in the event of your death. It is important that if you do this you keep the list up to date. It is best if, rather than redoing the list each time you change investments, you keep it up to date on a rolling basis.

Your Solicitor will advise that you should hold the ‘equity’ in the property—being the money that you have left in the property after paying oﬀ the mortgage and meeting the costs of the sale—as Tenants in Common. This means that you still own the property jointly but that you have two separate shares in the equity in the property. For example, the Declaration of Trust could state that you each receive back your respective deposit contributions and if you were to be paying the outgoings and the mortgage equally, you could share any uplift in the value of the property equally. Consideration should also be given as to what should happen in the event of the property going down in price and you being in negative equity at the point of the sale. Ideally you should discuss this with your boyfriend at the earliest opportunity and reach an agreement. If you cannot agree as what you should do about the ﬁnancial aspects of the purchase, you should give some thought as to whether the joint purchase is actually a good idea at all!

This will allow your Executors to see quickly what investments you owned, when you sold or encashed them and how you reinvested the proceeds. That way if your Executors ﬁnd papers relating to an investment you do not appear to have at your death they can ﬁnd out what happened to it without having to investigate further.

Moorlands Road Dental Practice Welcomes their new colleague John Edward After working with us at the practice for 2 years, Casey Carnall left us at the beginning of July in order to take up another dental position. Our new dentist John Edward is looking forward to taking over from Casey on 10th August. If you have an appointment made with Casey no action is necessary, as all appointments will automatically transfer to Mr Edward. John qualified from the University of Bristol in 2003 and started his first job in Swanage in the same year. Having spent two enjoyable years working there and learning about life in general practice he then took up a job as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Southampton Hospital. This job involved carrying out oral surgery on a day-to-day basis as well as looking after in-patients on the ward. It gave an excellent grounding in surgical technique and enabled him to sit the exams to become a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons of the Royal College of Surgeons (England). After the time spent working in hospital John wanted to return to general practice and settled into a private clinic in Shaftesbury. He enjoys being able to provide good quality dental care and though able to provide general dental services he is particularly interested in root-fillings and aesthetic restorative solutions. Through clear communication and a gentle approach, patients feel at ease and involved in their care at all times. Away from dentistry John enjoys getting away with his young family and exploring in their campervan. When time allows you may find him hacking through the undergrowth on a local golf course or cycling through the lanes. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van A huge advantage of having a campervan is the ease of just deciding to “go out” whatever the time of day, or night, and get some space, relax and enjoy our wonderful English countryside. The weather has been so much better recently and we have had some beautiful evenings, so what better excuse than to put milk in the fridge, coffee in the cupboard and let Nellie take us for a drive! We did exactly that last week. Hayden had gone to scouts, leaving Stephen and I some time on our own for a couple of hours. We all live such busy lives and I just needed a walk to clear away the hustle and bustle of the day. Holt Heath is owned by the National Trust and belongs to the Kingston Lacy Estate. Situated 4 miles north east of Wimborne Minster, it is quite a magniﬁcent expanse of dry and wet heathland, bog and ancient woodland with views all the way to the Isle of Wight.

It was a gorgeous evening as we parked a very contented Nellie in a small parking bay. Stephen and I went for a slow, leisurely walk along the ‘path’. Livestock have actually been reintroduced to this 400 hectares of heathland. Their grazing is helping to reduce the shrubs and also control the coarser grasses which allows rare plants and species to thrive and ﬂourish. While we were there we saw cattle, ‘wild’ horses and ponies….as well as several cyclists. There is a circular route with the largest walk being 6 miles long and taking up to 3 hours. Oh what a shame, we only had 2 hours before we had to pick Hayden up…or was that a good excuse? The smaller route is just 3 miles long. bottle of water in hand, this would be a perfect spot to get away from it all and really enjoy the peace and quiet while observing nature at its best. Ironically once we were back in Nellie doing just that, enjoying the serene ambience with a cuppa from the whistling kettle, a driver came along and parked right in front of us with thumping music blasting out of the car! I couldn’t believe it. I waited a while thinking whoever it was wouldn’t stay long. All my hopes of a tranquil couple of hours were fearfully fading away. It was obvious after ten minutes that this person was staying right there. I got out of the van and carefully approached the car. We do live in a democracy, so I did hold back what I really wanted to say (us English are very good at that!), and quietly asked if the music could be turned down, as we could only hear the rather loud beating drums. Don’t you just love it. The lady was very good and the music was turned down. A short while later the car drove off. Phew! Nellie, who had gotten rather tense with all of this,

breathed a sigh of relief. My serenity was back and I was once again able to take in the silence and calmness that I was seeking. It must be all the ﬁshing I did with Dad when I was younger. All those blissful lazy days with nothing to worry about, no cares in the world and surrounded by chirpy singing birds, butterflies, family picnics, the gentle plop of the ﬂoat landing in the water. Those were the days! Back to present times. This area of heathland really is gorgeous. If you are looking for tranquillity and nature, not too far off the beaten track, then I highly recommend you take a drive and witness the countryside in its glory. If you are looking for a disco, this is not the place to be … or maybe it is, if a car parks in front of you! Where will Nellie go next…?

West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club The West Moors Lunch and Friendship Club meets weekly on a Wednesday for a chat, lunch, games or entertainment and afternoon tea followed by bingo.

Recently we enjoyed a talk on New Zealand with beautiful slides given by Chris Legrand. Coming up before our summer break we have Exercise to Music, a Quiz, Nick singing and Simon with his piano. Girlguiding in West Moors West Moors Guides are working on their Fastnet Challenge Badge, supporting older members of Guiding who compete in the yacht race this August. Our activities may be land based but still involve water and lots of challenges, including making waterproof outﬁts, models of the Needles using spaghetti and marshmallows, singing seashanties and visiting Moors Valley to ‘climb the rigging’. Food activities are always popular and a team from the unit is competing in the Rose Bowl cooking competition at Dudsbury this June. Can we win the cup back? As you may have read, we are looking for new leaders, if you are over 18, and would like a new challenge or to make a contribution to your community, please get in touch and ﬁnd out more. Expand your horizons

Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space. Jobs for June:Take oﬀ the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.

Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another ﬁlling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old

carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.
