Dear Neighbours, Wow what a busy month of December we had! You can read all about it with “The Edition 128 Adventures of Nellie” on pages 38 and 39. Did you also manage to get safely through Christmas and keep everyone happy? It isn’t always an easy task, but I think we can say it was all very successful this year. It all starts again now, maybe Stephen & Debbie Corney with a few new decisions and our son Hayden made and a determination to do something special, different or just finally sort that space out once and for all, build that new conservatory at last or have the new carpet you have wanted for some time. Whatever it is for you, we are here to help. If there is a company you would like to recommend to us, or a club that needs some extra support or recognition, then do tell them about us. I would also like to start a “Local Celebrity of the Month” page. This could be about anyone in fact, old or young, someone who has done some local charity work, has had an interesting career, has a great skill or talent, or a past family history of intrigue. I am very happy to come and interview the person myself, or the information could be sent in the post or by email. I really want to tell people’s stories. We love to hear about others, read about people lives, interests and attainments, so please contact me if you know of someone, or you yourself would like me to come and meet you. Winning streak at Moors Valley Country Park & Forest Moors Valley Country Park & Forest near Ringwood has been nominated for a prestigious national award in the Large Visitor Attraction category of the 2016 Visit England Awards for Excellence. The nomination follows the Park being crowned Winner of Winners in the Dorset Tourism Awards in October when they also received a gold award in the Best Large Attraction category and silver in the Access and Inclusivity category. They are also in the running for a regional accolade in the Large Visitor Attraction category of the South West Tourism Awards where they are up against stiff competition from the likes of the Eden Project, Brunel’s SS Great Britain and and Salisbury Cathedral.

Singer urges Cherries to ‘Never Give Up’ with charity single A song dedicated to AFC Bournemouth and their fans launched last week with a party at Canvas Bar in Bournemouth, which included a special screening of the accompanying video, which has already had over 5000 hits. The track, entitled ‘Never Give Up’, has been written and recorded by Bournemouth based singer / songwriter Chris Manning, who is donating all proceeds from the sale of the single to Lewis-Manning Hospice in Poole. Chris, an accomplished and well-known local entertainer, wrote ‘Never Give Up’ having been inspired by the Cherries near demise and subsequent rise to the pinnacle of English football’s elite. The song captures the spirit of AFC Bournemouth’s determination, not only to survive in league football but to fight their way all the way up to the Premier League. Chris took it upon himself to write and perform the song, which is available now on iTunes, and raised funds from local businesses to pay for the the filming of the music video, which got its first showing on ITV’s Meridian News following AFC Bournemouth’s historic win at Premier League champions Chelsea before conquering Manchester United at home 2-1. Chris was thrilled to receive huge praise and support from Saxe Coburg and Lovett International’s MD Max De Kment, who has championed the song from the minute he first heard it and is also featured as the sports commentator in the video. Other local businesses that have supported the project include, The Rope & Anchor Pub on Poole Quay, Premier Sports Solutions, Play
Gold Bournemouth, Aruba / Westbeach, CANVAS Loft Bar and NVS Media. After a recent visit to the Hospice Chris has said, “I’m thrilled to have been able to create and write a song that no only represents and celebrates the historic success of my local football club but it was also an opportunity for me to remind all of us all to never give up on our own personal hopes, dreams and life aspirations.” Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager at LewisManning, said, “We were really touched when Chris got in touch to say he wanted to support the hospice. We laughed about the ‘Manning’ connection but Chris said he actually choose us because he had heard so many people in the community comment about the wonderful care we give to people locally. The project ticks all the boxes in terms of Chris’ love of football, singing and song writing and for AFC Bournemouth and we urge as many people as possible to download the single for Christmas. Hopefully the song will give the Cherries and their fans the boost they need and at the same time raise some money for us to continue to help people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.”

Sail away jelly boats
Colourful and fun these make for a super table display snack at a party.
INGREDIENTS
4 oranges 1 packet of red jelly 1 packet of green jelly
Cut the oranges in half and scoop out the insides. Make up the jelly as per the instructions. Whilst the jelly is setting, make some pretty paper sails with toothpicks for masts and rectangles of paper for the sails. Place the orange halves into a muffin tin and fill half with red jelly and the other half with green jelly. Pop in the fridge until they have set. Once ready, slice the oranges in half again to make quarters and place the paper sails into each quarter. Serve on a pretty plate, or on some blue paper for the sea!

Wildlife round-up for 2015 Dorset’s wildlife has once again provided us with some interesting and controversial news stories in 2015. Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) Communications Officer, Sally Welbourn, takes a look back over the last year.
BADGER CULLS DWT was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that the badger cull went ahead in Dorset in the autumn. In 2013 the conservation charity started a badger vaccination programme on selected DWT nature reserves in Dorset, to demonstrate a humane alternative to culling. Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) is a devastating disease, with serious implications for farmers who lose stock as a result, but DWT believes there are better and more effective ways of controlling the disease, such as better biosecurity, badger vaccination and, in the long term, cattle vaccination. JELLYFISH ON THE UP Jellyfish are fast becoming a common sight along our shores and in our seas, with sightings being recorded right up until November! Eight jellyfish species have been recorded in Dorset, including the Compass, Moon, Barrel and Blue Jellyfish. A mild winter in 2014 and warmer sea temperatures, longer sunny days and an upwelling of nutrients from the water column all created the Spring Plankton Bloom – and the perfect conditions for Jellyfish to feed in throughout 2015.

GRASS FREE LAWN! On dry land, DWT launched the UK’s first ever community grass free lawn in Dorchester. 1500 plant trays were given to 78 individuals and families, local schools and community groups in preparation for the planting day in April. The result was a patchwork of flowering plants, rather than grass. Research has suggested that this type of lawn is fantastic for pollinating insects and other wildlife, and additionally it flowers all year round so it’s nicer to look at, requiring less maintenance than a traditional turf lawn! WHAT’S YOUR ‘WILD LIFE’? The launch of the My Wild Life campaign has been a big hit with wildlife lovers in Dorset. We’ve asked people to think about what wildlife does for us, and how ‘wild’ their lives really are. One common theme in the stories we’ve received is the mutual benefit for wildlife and people from volunteering work. Common Law Marriage—is there such a thing? Six out of every ten couples who live together believe that they have the same protection as married couples if they split up. Although the terms common-law husband/wife are often used to describe a couple of who live together, these relationships do not actually have any formal legal recognition. The reality is that cohabiting couples, where people are living with their partner but are not married or in a civil partnership, have virtually no legal rights in the event of death or the breakdown of a relationship. Plant of the month Primrose
The first sight of a primrose can never fail to warm the cockles of one’s heart, especially if the winter months have been somewhat dreary. Growing these pretty plants is relatively easy and can be grown from seed, sown outdoors in a cold frame during winter. Once they’ve got their second or third leaves they can be put out into the garden, either at the front of a bed or in a container. They don’t grow overly tall and need planting in lightly shaded areas about 6-12 inches apart. Keep an eye on slugs and snails as these can often affect the plants otherwise enjoy the white, yellow, red and pink colours that will bloom.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well I can safely say that Nellie is a girl of many talents and many personalities (isn’t that true of all of us girls?) She has been a cafe, a place of retreat, a limousine, a bedroom, a kitchen, a reading room, a changing room, a bus for the boys, an office, a bargain hunter and even Santa’s sleigh! She was certainly in her element this Christmas and kept us very busy! Early in the month she drove us in style to Wareham, to the famous “Old Granary” next to the River. We often feed to ducks here in the summer, but I have to say the cold night air was not conducive to us, or the ducks that night! Nellie was rather disappointed. The Christmas meal was delicious and funnily enough I had duck as opposed to the traditional choice. You don’t think it was one of those we fed earlier in the summer do you? Anyway we were well entertained by a brass quartet playing carols and we had excellent company, with friends from local businesses in Wareham. Nellie got us home in good time, much to Hayden’s chagrin, who was staying at my sister’s in Poole. It was way too early for him...

Debbie with Nellie on Wareham Quay I have to say that the highlight of December was “Granny Cousins Ghost Walk of Old Town Poole”. Michele O’ Brien who took Nellie and 15 more of us for this haunting walk is delightful! She combines her experience in theatre, dance, storytelling, pre-school work and choreography to guide you on a fascinating, if at times scary look at our old fishing port. Nellie was indeed sacred, in fact she jumped a few times as Granny Cousins screamed out as if possessed by a bygone figure. Poole has a lot of history and it was intriguing to hear all the different stories. Near The King Charles Pub there is a tiny gaol, which you may never have seen. The pub itself has a story of a young girl who fell in love with a sailor. The night he was to return there was a huge storm and many ships capsized leaving their poor crew to battle against the cold, dark waters. The lover did not return and sure he was dead, the young maiden hung herself from the rafters of the pub... (Did you really want to hear this?) No time later the handsome sailor returned, to find his true love was gone. It is said that

39 she can still be seen from time to time in the roof room of The King Charles. I am sure for those who want to believe, this could be true. For Nellie she decided it was a sad story and wondered if she would ever find her true love... Does anyone know of a single campervan who is attracted to the more mature, somewhat overweight, professional lady? …Anyway, back to the evening which really was rather good. The sky was clear, there was little wind and despite heavy rain earlier in the day, there was not a drop in sight. It was perfect for a spine chilling evening. Hayden referred to it as “the best yet!” This was our fourth year of seeing the show, so I guess he is qualified to say so. The show definitely puts you in that Christmas mood. The atmosphere is excellent, you can sing along or just marvel at all the costumes and laugh at

Debbie & Hayden with some of the cast some very funny parts. Great fun! Nellie was all dressed up in lights, with her very own lit up snowman and even a Christmas tree inside! I had bought her some extra lights (as she had been a good girl), but to my horror they flashed blue and red! I know Nellie is a woman of many personalities, but she could be “done” for impersonating a police woman! They had to go... and we did laugh. Of course we also went to The West Moors Christmas Fayre and Nellie would like to thank the organisers and Churches Together of West Moors. What a good job you all did! There were more stalls than ever and Santa did finally appear on the Elephant and Castle roof with those brave fire fighters to rescue him. Nellie goes all weak at the axles when she thinks of this....there she goes again! It was a great evening and we were very happy to say “Hello” to lots of West Moorians. (Nellie made that up. Nothing to do with me.) We do hope you had a great Christmas like we did and Nellie wants to wish you all a fantastic, fun and fulfilling 2016! Where will she take us next…? By Debbie Corney

Yet still far too few people try it – last year only 2% changed bank accounts – strange as my mailbag is full of people complaining about their banks. So my message is stop bitching and start switching. Q. OK, so it’s easy, but what’s this about free money? Martin’s A: Many of the challenger banks (those who want to break the dominance of the old ones) want you to switch to them so much they’re willing to pay you to do it. There’s a full rundown and eligibility criteria at mse.me/bankaccounts. But, in brief, here are the current top picks: • FirstDirect.co.uk gives switchers a free £100 (or more via some websites) – cash comes within 28 days of switching and paying in £1,000. Other benefits: It’s won every customer service poll I’ve ever run, 92% rate it great, it has a linked 6% regular saver, 0% overdraft up to £250. • Halifax.co.uk/Reward gives a free £100 within three working days of switching. Other benefits: Pays £5 each month as long as you’re in credit. • The marksandspencer.com current account gives a free £100 M&S gift card (or more via some websites), within a month of switching. Other benefits: Unlike other accounts, you don’t have to pay in a set monthly amount (see next question) linked 6% regular saver, 0% overdraft up to £100.
Q. Can anyone get these? Martin’s A: You’ll be credit scored to get these. Though most people who have an existing bank account should be fine (unless it’s a basic account). Yet to get the bonuses, you normally need to use their switching service and have a couple of direct debits or standing orders set up. Plus with First Direct, you must meet a minimum pay-in requirement, equivalent of £13,200 a year – effectively a way of requiring you to earn a set amount. If you have irregular income, M&S is the only one not to demand this. Q. Aren’t there also accounts that pay high interest on your savings? Martin’s A: Yes that’s another form of competition, and if you have higher savings, that is likely to be more lucrative in the long run than grabbing the switchers bonuses. The big one is the Santander.co.uk 123 account – it pays up to 3% cashback on certain household bills and up to 3% AER interest if you have between £3,000 - £20,000 in it. Its £24 a year fee is rising to £60 in January, yet if you’ve got over £5,000 savings and earn some cashback, it’s still likely you’re winner (full analysis of if it’s worth it in my www.mse.me/santanderfee blog) If you’ve less, the lloydsbank.com Club Lloyds pays 4% AER interest if you’ve £4,000 to £5,000 in it and both TSB.co.uk and Nationwide. co.uk pay 5%, but only on up to £2,000 with TSB and £2,500 with Nationwide for the first year. Q. Once I’ve switched and got the free bonus, can I switch again to another bank account? Martin’s A: Yes, there’s nothing stopping you continually switching. But remember, you’ll be credit scored every time you open a bank account, so try to minimise opening too many accounts in a short space of time, especially if you’re going to be applying for credit in the near future, like a mortgage. Q. I hate banks - are there any other options? Nationwide, as mentioned above, is a building society, so it’s owned by its members, and it’s got decent offers. Or see if your local credit union (a local savings and loans co-op) is one of 500 that offer bank accounts via ABCUL at findyourcreditunion.co.uk Q. I’m often in the red – can I switch to a 0% overdraft? An overdraft’s a debt like any other, so if you often go into it, cutting its cost makes it easier to clear. FirstDirect.com has a £250 0% overdraft, and you can put the £125 it pays switchers towards clearing the overdraft too – a big boon. Nationwide.co.uk/flexdirect may give a bigger 0% overdraft, credit score depending, but only for a year. It’s 50p/day after, so aim to clear it before then.

Inner Wheel District 11
International Service Rally 2015 Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Ferndown were among the 212 ladies from 26 clubs in IW District 11 who met at the Hamworthy Club for their annual International Service Rally. District Chairman Alisson Smith and District International Service Chairman Liz Bandey welcomed Ann Acaster, International Service Committee Chairman of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland, and Past District Governor Don Short, Director of the Rotary Jaipur Limb Project in Africa. Ann promoted the charity School in a Bag, which she has chosen for members across Great Britain and Ireland to support during the Inner Wheel year to June 2016. This charity, initiated in 2009, delivers rucksacks filled with stationery, learning resources and eating utensils to poor, orphan, vulnerable and disasteraffected children around the world. Don presented the work of Rotary Jaipur Limb Project, which is the charity being supported by District 11 this Inner Wheel year. The charity brings the independence of mobility to thousands in India, Africa and Haiti by provision and free fitting of artificial limbs and feet. A stall of craft items hand-made by members of the Inner Wheel Club of Ferndown raised £284.50 on the day for the Heal Project (HIV Empowered and Living) in Lusaka, Zambia, subsequent sales increasing the total to £350. £160 was collected at Tesco for the Ringwood Food Bank.
LIBRA FOUNDATION, BRADET, ROMANIA Sixth-former Chloe Tuffrey shared experiences of her summer trip to Romania with the Libra Foundation, for which IW Ferndown had contributed to her expenses. She spent two weeks as part of a team (12 UK students, 2 Romanian volunteers and 4 leaders) at Bradet rehabilitation centre, providing a programme of activities, both indoor and outdoor, for around 90 residents (8 to mid-20s) with a variety of disabilities. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Heritage News: Iron Age Parley The large hill fort built at Dudsbury Camp in West Parley by the Durotriges tribe some 2800 years ago is the only hill fort in the area and, given its premium role on high ground upstream from the settlement at Hengistbury Head, would have been the focus of a large settlement. The fort was one of a number built in the Stour valley and one of the 3000 built in Britain. Whilst Badbury Rings and Hod Hill are much larger in area, Dudsbury Camp, with an internal area of 8 acres, would have had an important role in the local community. It is unclear if the fort was wholly defensive or used for ceremonial purposes as a defined space or as a symbol of wealth and power; perhaps a combination of these. There is evidence of some settlement in the Camp, perhaps for a local chief, but most would have been outside.

In its original form the fort would have been an impressive structure with its 2 tall ramparts topped with wooden posts and the ditches considerably deeper than they are now. Construction would have involved a huge movement of soil and clearance of much of the surrounding woodland for essential timber and this created good views all round as well as showing the hill fort to others. This huge construction project needing hundreds of people to build it over many years, living locally either permanently or seasonally and for a fort to be built of its size could have supported a settled community of up to 500 people in the surrounding area. The large settlement outside the fort benefitted from abundant local resources, including a good supply of fresh water from local springs, good well drained farm land, plenty of mixed woodland and heath for fuel and grazing animals as well as pockets of clay and gravel for

building materials. The sea to the south provided shellfish and fish. Settlement would have been in numerous roundhouses of differing sizes, built on a timber frame with 6 or 8 central posts and enclosed by walls of wattle and daub or cob. Reed and straw were used for roofing. Roundhouses could be 50 feet across, housing up to 50 people, but most were much smaller. The settlement also included many other buildings used for a variety of uses such as workshops, grain stores, animal shelters and pens for a variety of animals with a network of fencing to protect crops. Trials at the Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, that recreates Iron Age buildings, have shown a lot about the building techniques used to create these simple buildings, how to store grain and other crops properly and how to control smoke from fires in the buildings. These trials since the 1990’s have shown that with no hole in the roof for smoke to escape then meat could be stored for a long time and birds and pests kept away from the reed or straw roof. The
round buildings were surprisingly comfortable and warm. There is little evidence of the settlement in Parley as most of the materials used were organic but clay pots and evidence of fires and rubbish pits have been found at Dudsbury and around Wood Town Farm south of Christchurch Road. Some current field boundaries are thought to date from this time. Most settlement is likely to have been on the high land around the camp and on the flat land east of New Road and towards the Stour where a line of natural springs provides drinking water. The fort and settlement could have been in use for 1000 years, but even when the Romans came the rural self-sufficient life would have changed little. The land has been used as pasture and small scale crop growing and more recently as market gardens and nurseries. Small fields limited mechanisation and with no deep ploughing it is highly likely there is a considerable amount of unknown archaeology relating to the Iron Age in these areas. Picture a grey January day and kids going crazy from being cooped up indoors. Children it seems are immune to ‘bad weather’, but without sun or snow to tempt us out of our cosy centrally heated homes, we adults sometimes need a nudge. If you’re looking for some inspiration on those cold grey January days, then mother of two and author Sue Gascoyne is on hand with some tried and tested fun ideas for things to do outdoors: • Make a mud pit as this is great for splashing in; experimenting with consistency for creating mud pictures; mixing up hearty concoctions with old pots and pans; and of course, making mud pies. • Make ice sculptures to hang on the trees. Simply arrange holly and other foliage or sliced citrus fruit in transparent plastic takeaway containers. Add a loop of string for hanging, fill with water, put the lid on and leave to freeze over night. Freezing accentuates the colours in the leaves, berries and fruit creating a truly mesmerising display guaranteed to melt even the frostiest heart! • Use icicles as magic melt in your hand pens! • Collect sheets of ice form a puddle and add slowly drops of food colouring to watch the colour spread like fingers through the ice. • Go puddle jumping as there’s something irresistible about cracking the glass-like layer of ice on a puddle. Add powder paints for some fun welly printing! • Fill an old ice cube tray with mud and leave outside overnight to freeze. Turn the mini bricks out for lots of building fun. Add small toy animals for firing imagination. • If you don’t fancy getting messy, make frozen mini ice bricks instead to build igloos with or to create a polar landscape complete with frozen shaving foam snow, glass cubes, a safety mirror and polystyrene pieces. • If it’s damp and cold outdoors then why not create a fire pit for charcoal making, toasting of marshmallows and warming chilly fingers by the fire? Share a flask of hot chocolate for the best snack ever!
• Go on a family walk, armed with a list of things for you all to spot. Include a mix of unusual as well as unexpected things that will add challenge and excitement. • In Winter time birds can really struggle to find enough food to eat so why not make bird cakes and encourage an interest in bird spotting? Heat up some lard and carefully mix with bird seed. Use the warm mixture to fill coconut shells, small terracotta plant pots or recycled yoghurt pots. (You will need to make a small hole in the bottom of the containers and insert and knot a loop of string to hang it.) Once set cut away the plastic containers if used then hang in a position where you can spot which birds it attracts. Children can create a tally to record and identify the winged diners or why not get involved in a national Birdwatch campaign. • If your New Year resolution was recycling more why not upcycle your old dead Christmas tree into a didgeridoo? You’ll need to be patient as the wood needs several months to dry out, but what an awesome project to do with an adult. If that’s too much machinery and time you could craft a bird feeder instead. Simply cut the tree into smaller pieces, about 30cm long would work well. Drill out the trunk to create a hole for the bird seed and prepare to watch the birds flock to your garden sculpture. If these projects have whet your creative appetite there’s always coaster making or sculptures, to give you a head start on Christmas presents! One of the best things about getting cold outdoors is the pleasure of warming up afterwards with a cup of hot chocolate and a roaring fire. There’s nothing like the tingle of cold cheeks to make you feel alive, so what are you waiting for, the outdoors awaits!
