Hello Neighbours! Yes it really is Panto time. Can you believe how this year has flown by? Stephen, Hayden and myself are off to Hull for Christmas this year to catch up with my family. It is quite a while since we have travelled up there for the festive season and I am really looking forward to seeing the extended family as well as my parents. For me that is what Christmas is all about. Mum and Dad have come down South for the past few years, but now Hayden is 9 we feel that Father Christmas wouldn’t mind dropping the presents off in Hull… If you are entertaining this year, then maybe you need some help in the home, to create the space you want. Why not give one of our loyal advertisers a call? A trip down memory line... Two 'doctors' play their part in the decline and fall of the West Moors railway. One, Dr. Augustus Granville, was the author of 'The Spas of England', published in 1841. He wrote ... " I look upon Bournemouth ... as a perfect discovery ". At the time the population there was no more than 300. By 1871, largely through his promotion of its health benefits it had grown to around 7000; just ten years later, the resident population was 17000. This rapid growth left the railway with a dilemma. When constructed, the 'main line' through south Dorset (via West Moors) avoided Bournemouth: it was too small to justify consideration. To reach the fledgling resort by rail, passengers changed at Hamworthy Junction, travelled to a station at the end of the peninsula, crossed a rather precarious wooden bridge to Poole town then endured a bumpy carriage ride across Poole Heath.

Photo of the original ‘notice of closure’ as displayed in the 1960s By the late 1860s, this wasn't good enough and two new railway routes were developed to serve Bournemouth: the first, opening early 1870, used a branch from Ringwood that followed the Avon valley to Christchurch then west to a station on Holdenhurst Road. The second was a single line branch leaving the main line at Broadstone, thence to a new station for Poole and on to a terminus in the western part of Bournemouth - this route opened in 1874. By the late 1880s the growth of the resort had outstripped even these routes; a new dualtrack railway was opened running from Brockenhurst via Sway to Bournemouth and on to Poole - the modern-day main line. The original line via West Moors Junction was relegated to the status of a 'country' railway and traffic declined on what became known as the 'Old Road'. And the second doctor? One Richard Beeching, who held a doctorate in Engineering. But you didn't even need a degree to see that two lines running through south Dorset were unsustainable. The thriving resort of Bournemouth would always attract the lucrative traffic. On the first weekend of May 1964, the Beeching 'Axe' fell: all passenger services ceased along the lines running through West Moors. Martin Rowley

The West Moors Directory Welcomes New Graduate Billie to the Team! The West Moors Directory, published by Dorset Publications, has a new team member! Billie-Louise Ryder-Carlton (Billie for short) was born in Kent and moved to Bournemouth in 2009 to begin studying at the University. She says, “Business studies was always one of my favourite subjects, and the beach has always been one of my favourite places, so I decided to combine the two. Bournemouth is worlds apart from where I grew up. I love the South Coast. Of course there is the stunning scenery, but there is also the people. The atmosphere in Dorset is much more relaxed and easygoing. I love it!” On the 8th of November Billie joined hundreds of other students at the Bournemouth International Centre to graduate in style. She says, “The ceremony was beautiful; one of my friends turned to me and said that she thought the ceremony was ‘very English’. I couldn’t see what she was getting at, as we all stood for the National Anthem looking not unlike Harry Potter. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, my family were very proud, and that was all that really mattered.” Billie smiled and continued, “The past three years have flown by, and in a way I am sad that it is over, but on the other hand I am now the proud ow ne r of a d e gr e e in Bu si ne s s and Management from Bournemouth University!” The Business and Management course covers many different aspects of business. Billie states, “I chose that course because it wasn’t too heavily focused on only one subject. I enjoy all areas of business and so this was perfe ct for me . It c overed everything from the finances, to international marketing and management.”

Bournemouth has several buildings with the University’s logo emblazoned along the front, and within these buildings are hundreds of students working away to earn their degrees. Billie says, “The amount of study space was brilliant. The library on the main campus is nothing short of impressive, but then there is also another at Lansdowne, which was very useful for me as I wanted to live as close to the town centre as possible. I also spent many, many hours at Studland House typing away. I have nothing but praise for the University. They look after their students incredibly well.” “Stephen and I welcome you to the Dorset Publications team!” exclaims Debbie

Winter Wildfowl Britain is an internationally important winter destination for millions of wildfowl who make their long way here from their breeding grounds in the north. They arrive here in search of a warmer climate with better feeding opportunities over the winter. December is an opportune time for bird watching in our coastal areas, wetlands and estuaries, where many of these avian visitors make their winter home. Red breasted mergansers, wigeons, many different kinds of geese and divers are all around in the wintertime for birdwatchers to enjoy. Some duck and goose species are gregarious outside their breeding season, and can be observed feeding in flocks of hundreds, whether diving ferociously for a fish dinner or grazing on vegetation. Wigeons are medium sized dabbling ducks with mainly reddish-brown and grey plumage. They arrive from Scandinavia and Russia and are present in Dorset in the winter, feeding on grass and aquatic plants. The red breasted merganser is a widespread member of the sawbill family, whose numbers peak around December, and they can be widely observed along the Dorset coast. They feed mainly on fish, and are strong, fast fliers. D i ver s a re l ar g e an d slender birds, three sp e ci es of w h i ch a re regularly seen in Britain; the great northern diver, which is the largest one, the black-throated diver

and the red-throated diver. They struggle to move about on land but are excellent swimmers, and fish is the main item on their menu. Look for them in Poole and Portland Harbours and offshore, including Studland Bay. The Fleet lagoon and Poole Harbour also provide great views of brent geese, a small, predominantly black goose that joins us for winter from its breeding grounds in Siberia. The migrant winter wildfowl’s main purpose for being here is to survive the winter and feed up in order to be able to breed again on their return home. Luckily for us, they grace our coastal areas throughout the winter, before heading home again in the spring to breed. Top places to see them include Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, Portland Road, Weymouth (open daily) and Poole Harbour, including DWT’s nature reserve on Brownsea I s l a n d , o p en w ee k en d s f r o m 1 1 t h February plus DWT Members’ day on 9th December. Lucy’s recipe corner Warming winter tomato soup There is a bit of chopping and heat involved in this recipe so make sure a grown up is there to help out. Put a little olive oil in a large pan Pop in the onions and carrots and cook gently until the onion is soft
Ingredients for 6 servings
1 large red onion (chopped up) 2 large grated carrots 1 pint of vegetable stock 2 tins of chopped tomatoes 1 tsp of tomato puree A little bit of olive oil

Pantomime season returns to the Bournemouth Pavilion from Saturday 8 December as we welcome Sleeping Beauty. This year’s offering is once again brought to you by UK Productions following a record-breaking production of Jack and the Beanstalk last year. Returning to once again write, direct and star is venue favourite and Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis as Happy Harry, whose local gags, rapport with the audience and range of impressions always go down a storm with adults and children alike. We’re also delighted to welcome back o n e o f t he be s t P a n to v i l l a i n s Bournemouth has seen in recent years, Su Pollard – last with us for the 2009 Panto season – as Carabosse. Also returning from the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk is Wave 105 presenter Kate Weston as Good Fairy. However, our all-star cast doesn’t end there, as they’re joined by Asa Elliott from ITV’s Benidorm as the Prince and of course, no Panto would be complete without a dame, with Nurse Nelly to be played by Colin Baker of Doctor Who fame.

WEST MOORS ART SOCIETY Have you an interest in painting and drawing? Why not join the friendly group who meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings. You will be very welcome. A demonstration by a professional artist is enjoyed on the second Monday in each month with members, always happy to help each other, meeting for untutored workshops on all other Mondays. WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP We are a very friendly flower club who meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10am in West Moors Memorial Hall. Visitors and new members are very welcome tea/coffee will be served at interval. Do come and join us for Christmas Demonstration on Wednesday the 12th December at the Memorial hall 10am. We will be having a special Demonstration by Katie Baxter her title is “A Morning of Christmas Festivities”. Everyone is most welcome and during the morning we will have coffee and mince pies. We are very keen to encourage members to use their abilities and on the 4th Wednesday of the month we have ‘Fun with flowers’, when anyone who would like to join us can come along and make a beautiful arrangement to take home. West Moors Lunch Club West Moors Lunch Club welcomes over 60’s to a cooked lunch every Wednesday in St Anthony of Padua Church Hall, Pinehurst Road. We have an hour of entertainment or games after lunch then tea & cakes followed by bingo complete the day. Recently the members have enjoyed the singing of Amber and ‘Chair Keep Fit’ with Kim. We look forward to getting into the Christmas spirit on 5th December with carols sung by the West Moors Middle School Choir and then our Christmas lunch on 19th December with singing by some of the Wimborne & Ferndown Singers. The club resumes on 9th January 2013 and forthcoming events include Tony’s Giant Scrabble and the Nature Pictures of Brian Pettit. Transport can be arranged locally if needed and volunteer car drivers & helpers will be most welcome. Please contact Joan on 01202 891519.

What’s On at the Library Did you know that if you are housebound you can have library books, including talking books, delivered to you at home? If you would like more information about this service please contact the library on 01202 873272. On the first Saturday of the month there is a District or County Councillor at the library from 10 to 11am for you to pop in and talk to.
Chris Chope holds regular surgeries at the library. The dates are on posters in the library, but you do have to book an appointment with his PA. You are all invited to our Christmas Coffee Morning at the library on Thursday 20th December from 10.30 to 12. Come and join us for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat and Special Christmas Quiz. More activities are planned for the New Year. Watch out for posters in the library to advertise these events.
West Moors Local Action Group (LAG) The West Moors Parish Olan Group, set up by the Parish Council, published their first Parish Plan in January 2007, and later formed a Local Action Group in order to progress the actions contained within in. The Group meet on a monthly basis in the Memorial Hall, and to date, there has been success in actioning many issues raised in the original Plan. As it is now 5 years on, we propose producing an up to date Parish Plan in order to determine the current concerns and issues in the village of West Moors.
