Daichi, The Dashing Dude, our beloved campervan took us out this month and we had a great trip around the Isle of Purbeck! It was a fantastic day and you can Stephen & Debbie Corney read all about it inside. It certainly is good to be able to travel and have some family fun. We do hope you have been able to do the same. Since many of us have had summer holidays abroad cancelled, are you (like us), looking at the house and garden to see what needs mending, improving or changing? Although a socially distant summer might well prove to be an interesting chapter in the history of British seaside towns and coastal resorts, there is still plenty to enjoy in Dorset. Whether you are keen for a safe visit to one of the county’s many beauty spots or prefer delving into the county’s fascinating treasure trove of history, here are five more interesting facts from the beautiful county of Dorset.
As well as being renowned as one of Dorset’s most beautiful gems, Kimmeridge Bay, situated on the Isle of Purbeck, is packed with millennia of geological history and even today continues to delight visitors as one of the favourite spots in the

county for water sports such as surfing and also the perhaps more pastoral pastime of rockpooling. However, a perhaps lesser known fact from this beautiful area is that just a pebble’s throw away is the oldest working oil pump in Britain!
Did you know?
Eighty-five years ago, the world’s shortest funicular railway was built in Bournemouth? The Fisherman's Walk Cliff Lift is recognised by the Guiness Book of World Records in 2015 for its unusual travel time, taking only a brief few moments to reach the top of the cliff. It is one of three such funicular railways which climb the Bournemouth cliffs, although the Fisherman’s Walk is surely the most interesting and popular, attracting millions of happy travellers since its opening eighty-five years ago.

The local icon of the three chalk formations that are better known as Old Harry Rocks are hailed for their importance and enjoy protected status. However they also serve to preserve the story of Harry Paye who is perhaps memorialized by these glorious natural structures in the sea. Locals will be well familiar with the story of smuggler and pirate Harry Paye whose ruthlessness caused even the Spanish and French fleets to fear the local of Dorset. Interestingly however, before the devastating effects of erosion took hold, the three chalk rocks were more numerous and until 1896, even Old Harry’s Wife was commemorated with a chalk structure of her own. Each year, a regular event is held in June to celebrate the local pirate however it has been postponed to later in the year.

Gin ‘O’ Clock!
Were you aware that Dorset has its very own gin? The award winning Conker Spirit company is also the first gin distillery in the county and makes a variety of different drinks including the dry gin that Dorset lends its name to. Described as similar to the traditional London dry gin, the Dorset Dry Gin is a combination of botanicals including some foraged from around the county and also New Forest Spring Water.

Ever heard about the World Nettle Eating Championship? If not, then perhaps it would come as a surprise that it is the 16th century pub, the Bottle Inn, situated in Marshwood which hosts the annual championship! According to the history of the competition, the unusual championship was born after two local farmers argued about whose field grew bigger stinging nettles and it was decided that whoever had the longer stinging nettle, the other farmer would eat it. Competitors travel from all over the world to participate in the World Nettle Eating Championship, right in the heart of Dorset.

For those of us accustomed to the rat race, lockdown offered a very different way of life. And after several weeks trapped at home, many of us got used to seeing a different version of ourselves. With no workplace to attend, no one to visit and nowhere to go except the local park, it made sense to dress casually and ditch our usual make-up routines. According to a recent report commissioned by the British Beauty Council, we spend over £3 billion a year on cosmetics. Depending on whether you buy low-priced items or top-of-the range brands, you could save between tens and hundreds of pounds by cutting down on the amount of make-up you regularly buy. However, if the thought of going cold turkey from cosmetics makes you nervous, there are a number of tricks and techniques you can use. Of course, going au naturel doesn’t mean zero effort when it comes to your appearance. In order to stay looking and feeling healthy it will be essential to cleanse and moisturise your skin and keep your hair conditioned and neatly cut. But apart from that, you’ll be surprised at how much time and money you can save. What’s more you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that your look – although it may have required a little help to achieve – is pretty much just as nature intended.

Reptiles: soaking up the sun in Dorset Like humans, rep�les love basking in the sun at this �me of year. In Dorset we are lucky to have lowland heathland habitat to support all six Bri�sh na�ve rep�le species. Rep�les are truly magnificent creatures, but they need a very specific habitat to thrive in and can be very sensi�ve to changes in their environment, which is why all rep�le species are legally protected. You also need a license to handle and monitor them. As rep�les are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they bask in the sun to warm up, and hide away in the shade to cool down again. During the colder months they hibernate, but in the summer months, rep�les will be enjoying the sunshine and feas�ng on the delights the heath has to offer, with lizards preying on spiders and insects and snakes favouring small mammals. As with lots of wildlife species in Dorset, their survival and success is largely due to having well-managed habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Great Heath team work hard on our heaths to ensure there is sandy soil, low vegeta�on and not too many trees, to create a dry and warm habitat for rep�les. Sand Lizard

Specialist Nurse conquers Everest at home for hospice charity An End of Life Nurse Specialist at Forest Holme Hospice in Poole has raised over £2,200 for the charity by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest as she recovered from emergency back surgery. Vanessa Barents hurt her back out of blue over nine weeks ago and was taken to hospital for emergency surgery. She decided to use her recovery to raise some money for the hospice by walking up and down her stairs at home, until she reached the 17,475 steps needed to equal a climb to the summit of the world’s highest mountain. Vanessa, said, “I suffered a slipped disc in my lower back, which caused Cauda Equina Syndrome that affected my lower half really badly. I had emergency surgery to fix the problem, and as part of my rehab, I decided to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice, a charity very dear to my heart. Not only do I have the privilege of working for them, but I also see first-hand the amazing work that is done there. During the coronavirus outbreak, most of the charity’s fundraising has stopped, so I thought why not combine my rehab with raising money for the hospice.” Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to more than 1,000 local people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and Isle of Purbeck. Each year the Charity needs to raise at
least £850,000 to help enhance the NHS provision at the hospice and ensure that Forest Holme is there for patients and their family and friends during the most difficult time of their lives. However, this year due to the coronavirus pandemic the charity has forecast a loss of at least £350,000. Vanessa is currently up to 90% of her target on her Just Giving page and hopes now that she has completed her challenge and returned to work, she can encourage a few others to donate via https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/vanessa-barents She added, “Any support would be amazing. The team at the hospice do such an amazing job with supporting palliative and end of life care, and need some extra support at the moment. I’m very pleased to have finished my fundraising event and thanks everyone for all of the support. The fundraiser is still open, and it would be amazing if I could reach my target.”

Step Up For 2,500-Mile Charity Challenge Wessex Cancer Trust is inviting supporters to step up for its 2,500-mile challenge - by walking the distance between its support centres 20 times - at Walk for Hope 2020. The cancer charity’s flagship fundraising event, which was due to be held in the New Forest in June, returns in a different format this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday 6 September, walkers will come together virtually to clock up the target mileage as a team by completing 20 laps of a route which links the charity’s four support centres in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. You can do your bit by signing up to walk five, ten or 20 miles, and you can do it on your own or with friends and family, at your own pace and wherever you choose. Charlotte von Sicard, Wessex Cancer Trust’s regional community manager, said: “Many of our Walk for Hope participants have or have had cancer, so although social distancing measures are easing, we know it’s still a really anxious time for some people and we didn’t feel it would be responsible to plan for a large gathering. Even though our walkers can’t be together physically this year, we’re still all in this together, so Walk for Hope is the perfect way to unite and work as a team to cover 2,500 miles! Last year 300 people took part and together they raised £50,000 which has made a huge difference to the lives of local people. Please help us to complete 20 laps
around our support centres and make 2020 the biggest and best Walk for Hope yet!” King of the Jungle and Wessex Cancer Trust’s patron, Harry Redknapp, said: “It’s been a tough few months for everyone, but cancer doesn’t stop and throughout the pandemic Wessex Cancer Trust has kept its services going for anyone who needs it. This is despite not being able to raise money by holding outdoor events. Walk for Hope is normally its biggest fundraiser so it would be fantastic to see as many people as possible out walking in their local areas. Let’s raise as much money as we can for people who really need it.” You can register at www.walkforhope.co.uk and set up your fundraising page. You can also link your Strava or FitBit to it. There’s also a fundraising leaderboard to help you monitor your progress and compete with friends and family. Registration is £10 with a fundraising goal of £100 per person. Entrants receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. Wessex Cancer Trust uses all of the money raised to provide practical and emotional support to anyone living with cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. STAR GAZING Welcome to the monthly Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of them are viewable just by stepping out at the appropriate me and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point (e.g. a clear view to the west). A cloudless sky is (usually) required! Some viewings will benefit from using binoculars or a small telescope if you have one, but most observa ons can be enjoyed without either.
Interna onal Space Sta on
The Interna onal Space Sta on (ISS) is usually visible at some point during the night, but o�en at unsociable hours. Unfortunately, at the me of going to press, there were no ‘social’ overhead passes for the month of August. However, mings are subject to change, therefore I recommend visi ng www.heavens-above.com for up-to-date informa on, remembering to set the loca on to Bournemouth. This reliable website has just added a new feature, called, ‘Live Sky View’, which is great for iden fying satellites as they pass overhead, especially the new Starlink satellites that will soon fill our night skies.
Meteor Events The annual Perseid meteor event reaches its peak this year on the night of 12-13th August. Unfortunately, the op mum me to spot most meteors, which is around 2a.m., coincides with a bright Moon. However, some lone meteors and their trails may be spo ed towards the northeast earlier in the evening prior to the moon rising. Nowadays, astronomers tend to avoid the term ‘meteor shower’, instead preferring to use the less roman c but much more realis c term ‘meteor event’. The former tends to raise expecta ons, with many pairs of eyes looking expectedly skyward in the hope of seeing meteors ‘rain down’ on them. Although o�en spectacular, meteor events can be a damp squib, and using the term meteor ‘event’ may help to lessen any disappointment. Mercury In early August, Mercury will be visible for those willing to rise around 5a.m. It will be extremely low on the horizon towards the ENE, and hard to spot in the brightening dawn light. Venus Now shining as the Morning Star, early risers will no ce Venus shining brightly in the east, best seen between 4 - 5a.m. before the sun rises. The view through a set of very good binoculars or telescope during the first week of August will show Venus in a stunning crescent phase. This then gradually increases to a half-moon phase for the remainder of the month.

23 Mars The red planet is rising around 11p.m. and is visible high in the south throughout the night. Saturn & Jupiter Both gas giants are visible low in the south a�er sunset. The pair are joined by the Moon on the 1st and 2nd August, and then again on the 28th and 29th. These two planets will not rise high in the sky so a clear view to the south is required. August is also a great month to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, located within the constella on of Sagi arius (Jupiter and Saturn are currently located within the same constella on and can be used as a star ng point - see diagram). Look for the ‘Teapot’ asterism low to the south. Its spout points towards the galac c centre, which hosts a super massive black hole called Sgr A*, which has a mass equivalent to 4 million Suns. The stars located close to this black hole are so affected by its immense gravita onal pull that they are orbi ng it at a whopping 5co000 kilometres per second! Our own solar system orbits around this central point at 270 kilometres per second. Even at such speeds, if you wished to return to the point in space where you had breakfast this morning, it would take roughly 225 million years to circle back to the same spot! Moon This month’s full moon on August 3rd is tradi onally known as the Sturgeon Moon to some Na ve American tribes, as it coincides with the me of year when sturgeon are abundant in their fishing lakes. August’s full moon also goes by the names Green Corn Moon, Blueberry Moon, and Red Moon.

Understanding Investments:
The Value of Ongoing Investment Management If you own a money purchase pension, individually or via your employer, your money will be invested. If you own an investment ISA, your money will be invested. Do you know what it is invested in and how exposed your money is to investment risk? Has this been looked at and potentially adjusted since the start of 2020 (and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic)? Typically, we find people invest in a pension’s default fund when first setting up their plan and this rarely gets looked at again. Many newer schemes offer default funds with Lifestyling, which means risk is reduced automatically as someone approaches the scheme’s standard retirement age. That can work well if you plan to retire at the scheme’s retirement age AND an annuity is to be purchased. However, many clients are not so binary as to be working full time one day and stopping completely the next. Reducing investment risk too early could be damaging (especially after a severe market decline). Clients who invest in ISAs (other than cash ISAs) usually have a better understanding of where and with whom their money is invested but may only review this periodically (perhaps once a year at best). As we have recently seen, a lot can change in a year! Ongoing Investment Management is a way for your investments to be continually monitored on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Adjustments are made to maintain the correct level of risk within the portfolio and to take advantage of investment opportunities as they are identified. The foundation of investing is built on Asset Allocation. The concept is that different types of assets will go up and down at different times, so when one falls another rises and helps support the overall portfolio (picture a graphic equaliser). The 4 main asset classes are cash, fixed interest, equities and property
so these will be held in a “multiasset” portfolio in varying proportions Howard Goodship depending on the level of risk (and therefore volatility) a client is prepared to take, along with consideration of their investment timescale. The % held in each asset is then adjusted based on strategic asset allocation and tactical asset allocation. The strategic allocation tends to be based on long term views and the tactical allocation is generally implemented based on current market conditions. Is there a cost to this type of service? Costs vary considerably, although they may be lower than you might think. At Lonsdale Wealth Management we act as the “informed buyer” for our clients. We research and select the fund management providers who offer the best service at the lowest cost-we strive for value! Some passive providers charge very little extra (0.12% plus fund charges of 0.15%) for a mixed asset portfolio with ongoing strategic asset allocation (Source; Vanguard) and some active managers’ charges can be as low as an additional 0.24% above the individual fund charges (Source; LGT Vestra). Next month’s article will explain the difference between passive and active investment management. However you manage your money, it is important you give it the attention it deserves. If you don’t then you could be making your financial objectives harder to achieve than is necessary. A self-build or commissioned camper van can offer more freedom and bespoke details than a factory unit. These are the best vans to base your design on. Camper vans are big business in the UK and it’s easy to understand their appeal. After all, once you’ve paid your initial investment, holidays become staggeringly cheap. Even staying on the most luxurious of campsites costs pennies compared with a night in a hotel room, while
The UK is awash with independent firms who specialise in converting vans into campers. Some mainstream manufacturers have got in on act game, too – just look at Volkswagen’s California. However, it’s also possible to homebuild your camper if you’ve got the time. Guides online are plentiful and easy to follow, and it can prove far cheaper than going for a third-party conversion. Plus, you’re able to specify the van to your liking. But before you start a conversion, you need a van – and these are our top five.
Fiat Ducato - The Ducato is a great choice for a motorhome conversion, and around two-thirds of motorhomes in Europe, whether coach-built or van conversion, are based on the Ducato. They are just the right size for most, offering enough headroom for an adult to stand without having too large a footprint. If you’re ordering directly from the factory, Fiat offers a specific motorhome base, with specialised tyres, a wider rear track, lower chassis and space to install water tanks. Volkswagen Transporter - The VW Camper was iconic once the rear-engined ‘splitties’ became an image of California surfer culture, and though the modern T6 is a totally different beast it still has that vibe nailed. It’s possible to buy your Transporter van in cool two-tone colour schemes or with retro alloy wheels. VW also offers a petrol engine – a rarity in this class. Ford Transit Custom - The Ford Transit has plenty going for it, and is the best-driving panel van you’ll ever find. A range of efficient diesel engines provide motive power, and few vans have such a car-like driving environment – there’s even a premium stereo and smartphone connectivity. Renault Trafic - When Renault updated the Trafic, it made sure that the interior dimensions were identical to the old model. This means that if you’re kitting out a brand-new Trafic – or its sister vans, the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 or Vauxhall Vivaro – you’ll be able to draw on eighteen years of camper fittings, diagrams and designs with which to fit your van out. Renault’s range of 1.6-litre diesel engines is superbly efficient, very smooth and decently powerful. Mercedes Sprinter - One of the safest vans on offer thanks to high-tech safety gear, this big brute comes in a variety of wheelbase and roof height variations so you can get the camper size you desire. It has the most premium cabin on the market, with controls and displays from Mercedes’ passenger car range. And there’s a three-pointed star on the bonnet. What could be better?

The Dorset Publications Camper Van As a family we have always loved “Treasure Trails, the fun way to explore”. Looking on their website www.treasuretrails.co.uk Daichi found an ideal one, as he could literally join in the fun too. This trail was a drive / walk expedition to recover a father and son who had gone missing while exploring some of the old ball clay mines! Of course, that was fictional, but don’t tell Daichi as he really thought he was being a detective for the day. It was perfect - 20 miles searching for clues around our wonderful Isle of Purbeck. Daichi was up early, roaring his engine, picnic packed and coats at the ready just in case. It was windy but bright. Let’s get those clues and save the day! Now, did you know that the name ‘ball clay’ came about as the clay was extracted by hand and during the transportation the large cube corners become rounded. There are many Ball Clay Mines on the Isle of Purbeck. Also, did you know that Wedgewood bone china, the world’s finest china, is renowned to have a secret ingredient… and that secret ingredient is Purbeck Ball Clay? Shush…. Don’t tell anyone!

Daichi admires the church at Knowlton Our first destination, hiding our first clue, was in the picturesque village of Church Knowlton. Tiny, with an idyllic thatched cottage and a Church that instantly throws you back to bygone days of village life and farming. There is something about that lifestyle, hard graft, but long and flowing dresses worn on a Sunday for Church with children running around mischievously, that I find rather appealing. Daichi was dazzled with the beauty and serenity. We found clues in the Church graveyard and as I also have a rather odd fascination with reading very old gravestones, this was right up my street. Or should I say headstone? Daichi’s engine shuddered as we moved to our next clue which was at the entrance to the Margaret Green Animal Rescue Centre. What an incredible village. Treasure Trails is a process of elimination. This one had 21 clues with 21 locations the father and son could be. Stephen, myself and Hayden like to have a game between us, where we guess at the start what the answer is. There is a prize if one of us gets it right! It all adds to the anticipation, as we eliminate the clues one by one.

39 This was a trail, not only of clue finding, but also of discovery and learning. We discovered the memorial of The Creech Barrow Seven, who were seven local men ready to defend their country in the second World War. We learned that Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books went to Durnford School in this area and that he was allegedly inspired by a real-life spy, John Bond, an ancestor to the Bond family who lived at Creech Grange House on our route. The family’s motto, inscribed in Latin on a wall there, is “The world is not enough” which of course is the title to James Bond’s 21st movie. The picturesque estate was sold for around £3.5 million a couple of years ago. Nice. We drove passed Tyneham, the lost village, which is a whole story in itself and one for another day. Passed the Springfield Hotel and into the car park of East Holme Farm Shop. Of course, we had to buy some healthy food after ticking off a few more clues, before setting off again. We stopped for lunch overlooking the gorgeous rolling hills. Terrific views and Daichi was so pleased to give us shelter from the wind, so that we could eat, thoroughly enjoy the space and relax in comfort. Oh, this is the campervan life. On to Stoborough where they were several good clues to find. Then up to Stoborough

Cruise ship in Bournemouth Bay Heath National Nature Reserve. Just Beautiful. Magnificent in fact. We went on to discover the Engine Shed, now a listed building which housed the engines of the old Tramway. By chance the owner arrived and we had a chat! The lanes, the countryside, the views here on the Isle of Purbeck really are stunning. What a beautiful county Dorset is. The journey ended at Norden Park and Ride. Norden is such an iconic station and so well preserved. We did not see any trains other than those engines stationed on the tracks, but all that searching, history discovery, picnic and photography meant we had arrived after 6pm on a Sunday. One clue here was tricky to find. It is possible the data had been removed, but by now, with only a few clues left we did an intelligent process of elimination and are pretty sure we knew where Ben and his boy were! Phew I say. None of us had guessed it right at the beginning, but hey, it was a wonderful day. We were all winners. Daichi was in his element and so were we. We ended our expedition overlooking the incredible green hills flowing into the sea at Poole and Bournemouth. Cruise Liners bobbing on the horizon. Just gorgeous. Where will Daichi take us next? 10 local artists and theatre makers commissioned to create engaging work to help beat isolation during lockdown In March 2020 the UK went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2020 Activate promoted an opportunity for artists and theatre makers to submit their ideas for ways to engage communities through this strange and often isolating - experience. Now the artistic projects, Creative Communities in Quarantine, are ready for the public to engage with. 10 Dorset-based artists, including Harry Potter star Rohan Gotobed (who played young Sirius Black), have been offered £500 each, plus the expertise and support of the Activate producers to see their projects come to life. The projects include collecting memories from the residents of Sherborne, sensory audio stories for care home residents, outdoor adventures for 3-6 year olds, wildwriting workshops, audio postcards for those living with dementia and flag-making to thank local heroes. Kate Wood, Artistic and Executive Director, Activate Performing Arts, said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer these micro commissions to local artists. Many people are seeing the benefits of art and culture while we have to stay at home so it’s important for us to support this in our local area. As an organisation we want to support

resident, you can submit them for a chance to feature in a display. Our Tale – Share a line to create an epic story. Artist Rohan Gotobed will curate a story with the people of East Dorset. Mini Maisie’s Journal – UpsideUp Theatre Company bring to life a paper character. Children aged 3-6 can join Mini Maisie on her adventures through video and downloadable activity packs. Wildwriting! Dorset – Join Sarah Acton from Black Ven poetry on a series of 6 Wildwriting adventures - a new one will be released each week. Going online – Millstream Theatre are looking to create more work online and require a digital artist to help them do so. Applications now open. Beside the Sea – Frenetic Fox Theatre are working with four Dorset care homes to bring memories of the seaside alive for those living with dementia. Audio Postcards – Artist Megan Dunford is working with In Jolly Good Company to create audio postcards with older people in the rural area of Wimborne St. Giles. The Quaranteens – BACStage Youth Theatre are going online and Zooming their way through lockdown.

Lockdowns may be largely lifted but we’re going back to a very different world at work and at school: many more of us are working from home at least some of the time, and school pupils and college students are getting used to doing more online learning. On Your Plot If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very sa sfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is ini ally followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courge es and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very o�en they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same me. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long me before you are harves ng fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a li le planning and now is the me to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been li�ed and le� to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or ghts, also work if you don’t fancy plai ng. Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courge es can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what be er gi� than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how li le informa on there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful li le book, that deals with just this ques on is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed. with informa on about how to store just about anything and a great addi on to any gardeners library.

We often hear fashion journalists declare that “50 is the new 30”. These days it certainly seems that the stereotypes of old age we grew up with are no longer valid. Improvements in healthcare, better fashions for older people and increased opportunities for leisure and enjoyment have combined to keep many of us looking and feeling more youthful than our parents did. “40 is the old age of youth, 50 is the youth of old age” goes the old saying, but veteran fundraisers such as Captain Sir Thomas Moore (better known as ‘Captain Tom’) and Dabirul Choudury ably demonstrate that today’s 50-year-olds could be looking forward to half a century or more of life. Celebrities turning 50 When actor Matt Le Blanc became a quinquagenarian, he made no attempt to hide his feelings: “It sucks. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. You kind of go, wow, where does the time go? I feel like I just turned 40.” Happily, film star Julianne Moore has managed to be a little more philosophical about reaching her half century milestone birthday: “The thing about 50 is that you’ve clearly reached a point where you have more of your life behind you than ahead of you, and that’s a very different place to be in. You’re thinking, ‘I’ve done most of it.’ I don’t like that feeling. But it makes you evaluate your life and go, ‘Am I doing what I want to do? Am I spending my time the way I want?’” Shakespeare’s take on old age From the age of 50 onwards we enter what
Shakespeare, in his famous “Seven Ages of Man” speech, has described as the fifth and sixth ages of man. As Shakespeare lived at a time when bubonic plague was rife and the average life expectancy was just 35 years, living to a ripe old age wasn’t an option for many. These days we may enjoy higher standards of hygiene and healthcare, but the arrival of Covid-19 has been a reminder that as human beings we are all still susceptible to disease. Turning 50 has a new resonance within the Covid-19 crisis, as it underlines the fact that old age is accompanied by increasing risk and vulnerability. Remarkable recoveries Antibiotics have conquered bubonic plague, and in the same way coronavirus will almost certainly be defeated, either by a vaccine, an effective track-and-trace system or a combination of both. Meanwhile there have been some remarkable recoveries from Covid-19, including 106-yearold great-grandmother Connie Titchen from Birmingham, who successfully fought off coronavirus. Connie Titchen’s granddaughter Alex Jones told Sky News that her grandmother had led a “really active life,” with hobbies that included dancing, cycling and playing golf. After avoiding two world wars and the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918, Connie is a triumphant survivor. So whatever you may feel about turning 50, it seems the answer is not to fear what might happen, but to take care of ourselves and enjoy each day as it comes.

Oceanarium Bournemouth Re-opens! The Oceanarium Bournemouth, has finally been able to re-open on Monday 6th July after 15 weeks of closure. During this time, staff has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the premises is safe to welcome back visitors without compromising the experience. A few changes have been made to the offer to allow social distancing; however all the Oceanarium’s collection of aquatic animals can still be viewed and enjoyed including Penguins. Sharks and Turtles. UK Director James Eels said: “Our team has worked very hard to ensure we could reopen, in a safe and secure manor. I am extremely happy that we were able to open our doors again on Monday the 6th July, and welcome back our visitors and members. The day was a great success with positive feedback from the visitors joining us on opening day!” “The great thing about a visit to the Oceanarium is that visitors can enjoy a touch free visit without losing any of the experience and as such we believe our aquarium is one of the safest indoor attractions to visit in these unique times.” “We have reduced our capacity and staggered arrival time slots to ensure all visitor’s and staff can practise social distancing and therefore introduced a new booking system to facilitate this. We would like to thank visitors for co-operating with us, whilst we all get used to the new way of working”. To guarantee entry, visitors are advised to purchase tickets online, along with booking a dedicated arrival time slot. If a visitor hasn’t booked tickets, they are more than welcome to join the queue, and can enter if there is still availability. If not, they will be
asked to return at a later time. Visitors will need to follow the new oneway route in place, adhere to the social distancing markers at all times, and make use of the hand sanitizing stations provided. Visitors bringing pushchairs, will need to keep them on their person as the push chair park is currently closed. All cleaning regimes have been significantly enhanced. Toilets are open but with limited capacity and are manned by attendants. Unfortunately, the kids play area remains closed, and all animal experiences have been suspended for the time being. The Offshore Café has re-opened with a limited capacity and offering eat in and takeaway. The aquarium has an onsite Visitor Services Team that will be able to help with queries and questions. Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
