National Lottery Funding Award In January this year, the Parish Council were absolutely delighted to have been awarded a grant of £5,774.00 for the ‘Fryer Field Youth Consultation’. The consultation will involve a series of youth focussed activities at schools, the youth club and at Fryer Field for young people, their parents, carers and other skate park users to express their ideas, views and any concerns about the area identified for development. This project is being undertaken by Dorset Community Action (DCA) on behalf of the Parish Council. DCA bring people together in Dorset to develop community-based solutions that deliver better services for the benefit of all. This will mean that local young people are in the lead in shaping the development of the skate park and that their needs are at the forefront of the design. This will also support future fundraising activities as well and result in improvements that benefit the community as a whole. Your support at these consultation activities is very much appreciated. There will be an opportunity to put forward your ideas at the forthcoming WESTIVAL event on Saturday 13th July at Fryer Field and also at a further family event planned to take place in September this year. Charity Providing Free Audiobook Memberships in Dorset Whether it’s discovering a new story or revisiting a classic, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. Studies have shown that reading can improve wellbeing and improve relationships with others, as well as reducing the symptoms of depression or dementia.* But, when you find reading print or holding a book difficult, how can you keep reading? Audiobooks may have the answer. Listening to an audiobook removes the difficulty in decoding words, holding up a book, or turning pages, so you can relax and escape into another world. Listening Books is a national UK charity who provide an audiobook library service for anyone who finds that an illness, disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition affects reading print or holding books. They currently have free memberships available for anyone living in Dorset who would like to join
the service, but may not be able to cover the standard membership fees of between £20 and £45 per year. There’s no financial proof needed, but they do ask for a selfdeclaration that this cost would be a barrier to joining. Their library has over 8,000 audiobooks, including bestselling authors for all ages like J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Lee Child, David Walliams, Jojo Moyes, Jeff Kinney, and many more! Plus, they record exclusive educational titles to support the National Curriculum in their professional studios, so they aren’t available anywhere else. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for tablets or smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. Get Dorset Buzzing!
This spring, Dorset Wildlife Trust is embarking on its biggest ever campaign to get over 2,000 people in Dorset doing at least one thing to help pollinators in their garden, and help Get Dorset Buzzing. But, why are we so concerned? It’s widely known that bees are in decline, yet they are arguably one of the most important insect groups on earth, helping to carry out the process of pollination which is responsible for one in three mouthfuls of food we eat, including chocolate, coffee and strawberries. But it’s not just bees that you will see flitting between flowers in your garden; butterflies, hoverflies, moths and some beetles also carry out the pollination process, so it’s important that we create much needed space for them all to thrive. One of the main reasons for the decline of bees and other pollinators is loss of habitat. Wildflower meadows used to provide prime pollinator habitat, but we’ve lost 97% of them since the 1930s. The good news is that there’s something we

can do to help. Our gardens and local green spaces are potential mini nature reserves, so if we can provide the space and the food, they will come! Everyone who signs up to the Get Dorset Buzzing campaign, sponsored by our friends at the Gardens Group and Wessex Water, will receive a free pack in the post or online, with everything they need to get started, or try new things if you’re already welcoming wildlife into your garden. West Moors Lunch & Friendship Lunch The West Moors Lunch and Friendship club meets in St. Anthony‛s church hall every Wednesday from 11.00am until 3.30pm. We welcome anyone over the age of 60 living in West Moors. Recently we have played Beetle, enjoyed Music for Health with Ali, the singing of Paul Spencer and a Quiz. We also celebrated the 7th Anniversary of the club being an all day event instead of just lunch. The singing and entertainment of.Nick Sellers and a slice of delicious cake, home made by one of the helpers, for afternoon tea made the day. We have a pianist coming soon for a sing-a-long and of course our Easter celebrations which, when you read this, will be nearly here. Happy Easter.

Charity football match to raise funds for John Thornton YAF Custom Creations are proud to be supporting a charity football match being held to raise fund for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Jo, James and Simon from Custom Creations said, “As a family run business, we put a lot of emphasis on building trusting relationships with everyone we work with and within our local community. “We use local family businesses to supply our materials and services, which helps us deliver on quality and enables us to develop the most important relationship of all – the one with our customers. As all our furniture is made in our workshop to our customer’s requirements, James develops this relationship during his first design visit which follows through to the installation. The AFC Bournemouth Legends vs Armed Forces XI Charity Football on 6 May 2019 at Wimborne Town Football Club is raising funds for the John Thornton Young Achievers

The game will feature some of the true greats from AFC Bournemouth’s recent history (including Eddie Howe and Steve Fletcher) taking on a team of serving soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, and as such it is certain to be a great spectacle and a fiercely competitive match! With live music, food stalls, a licensed bar, and a half-time penalty shootout tournament there really will be something for everyone on the day! There will also be the chance to purchase a mascot opportunity for younger members of the family, which will include photos on the pitch with the teams prior to kick off. The match wouldn’t be possible without the support of Willo (John Williams) and Viv, who have signed up an impressive team of AFC Bournemouth Legends. Willo actually presented an end of season trophy to the young John Thornton and it is poignant that the family have a photo of the two of them together. On Your Plot
April showers to October fun It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Bournemouth & District Concert Band BDCB is a friendly community wind band that rehearses and performs in the Bournemouth area. We have members from all over the area – Weymouth, Salisbury, Southampton, and everywhere in between! Members range in age from 14 to 80+ years. We practise at Queen’s Park Infant Academy Thursday evenings from 7:30 – 9:30 pm, all year round (except in August). Naturally good... Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans
Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice 60ml chicken stock 1tbsp reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour. 1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries. Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long.
