Hello West Moors! What fantastic weather we have had. It is so good to be able to go out and about for walks easily. How many of you have had early barbecues also? That is a great excuse to get together with family and friends and chill out a bit. Love it! The only problem is the rain, we do need it, so do be a little bit more careful with the use of water. This month as always there are lots of trades people and services to help you around the house, in the garden and for you personally. We have many different categories from dentists to fencing, from chimney sweeps to prom dresses, from custom made covers to kitchens and many, many more. Hayden, our son did a wonderful power point presentation on the computer this week, all done by himself of The Resurrection. The power point and the story is something they have all been doing at school, and it was very touching. He is only 8 and I thought of what I could do at his age...it certainly wasn’t as much as that. The children learn so much these days don’t they. Leave us standing! I hope you manage to get a break over the Easter Holidays and meet up with the family for a meal or a day out. Failing that give one of our advertisers a call and get some jobs done in the house! Messing about in the harbour! Greenslade Pleasure Boats is a family run business established in 1970. The first boat was the Eva May (named after Matthew Greenslade’s grandmother) and it was built in the family back yard which eventually became their boatyard. Built by hand by Matthew’s father, (Rusty) Roy Greenslade, little may he have know just how far it would go. Matthew was just a teenager when he and his dad built their second boat 10 years later in the same back yard. She was called the PammyAnn (named after Matthew’s mother). What had started out as a family man’s dream has now developed into a well established and respected business in Poole providing a service to the National Trust, local conservation companies, Corporate companies, local businesses, The Scouts & Brownies, schools... the list goes on!! Matthew and Fiona also take a very keen interest in supporting local schools, charities and much needed sports clubs for young people by way of sponsorship. This year they have decided to start an annual Free charity draw, 30 charities were invited to enter the draw and the Sheriff of Poole Councillor, Carol Evans, drew the winner, which was WELDMAR HOSPICECARE TRUST. The prize is the use of one of the passenger boats given free of charge to be used for fundraising. Two representatives Katie Slade & Jonathan Panton received the prize on behalf of the Trust and were delighted. Katie said that they had never done any fundraising on a boat before and she was really looking forward to organising the Event which will hopefully raise much needed funds for the 12 Weldmar Nurses that do an absolutely amazing job covering Dorchester, the Purbecks and parts of Poole. These nurses are frequently confused with the MacMillan nurses who do the same job but cover a different area. The Weldmar team need to be

recognised in their own right as they rely on 70% of their funding from fund raising and donations. Weldmar Hospicecare Trust offer palliative care and respite for adults and children in our communities and are most deserving of our help & support. Matthew feels that Poole & Bournemouth offer so much now to the tourism industry that it would be good to offer the local people some events of their own to enjoy so this year Greenslades will be organising a number of enjoyable and varied cruises in and around the beautiful natural Poole harbour as well as the usual Wareham River trips & firework cruises. WEST MOORS ART SOCIETY A friendly group of artists meet in the West Moors Memorial Hall on Monday mornings with a demonstration given by a professional artist on the second Monday of each month. Untutored workshops take place on all other Mondays when members will help each other if advice is requested. Do come to join us. You will be very welcome. On April 16th Steve Hall is to demonstrate painting in a loose style using watercolours. On May14th with a coffee morning/fun workshop with a demonstration on DVD by a professional artist.

WEST MOORS FLOWER GROUP We are a very friendly flower club who meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10.00am in the West Moors Memorial Hall. Visitors and new members are very welcome, tea/coffee will be served in the interval. We are very keen to encourage our members to use their abilities and on the 4th Wednesday of every month we have 'Fun with Flowers', when anyone who would like to join us can come along and make a beautiful arrangement to take home. We extend an invitation to the elderly residents in West Moors to come to the Wednesday Club at St. Anthony’s Church Hall. All new members are welcome for lunch and friendship. We have been established for 37 years. You will be served a cooked three course meal with coffee or tea. Great Value Local Opportunity for Children’s Fitness and Friendship I am writing to you to introduce the West Moors Youth Football Club. We are a local, well established, community based (not for profit) organisation working to provide local children with the opportunity to play football and receive training. All child members of our club receive weekly football coaching sessions and the play regularly in local league matches. At a time of great financial hardship for many families we are delighted to let you know that the average annual cost for a child to enjoy full membership of our club is only £125., which amounts to just over £2 per week. We feel that this offers fantastic value for money and provides a real opportunity for local children to enjoy exercise and friendship in a great family club environment.

We have volunteers who will bring books of your choice to your home every three weeks. For more details phone the library on 873272. We continue to offer ‘library gets lively’ sessions every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 3pm–3.45pm for preschool children. Sessions include rhymes, stories and craft activities. Do come along and have some fun. A reminder to you that there are several different ‘surgeries’ at the library. On the first Saturday of the month you can come and speak to a district or county councillor. Chris

Chope – local MP visits the library at various dates throughout the year – the next time he is available is 21st April and appointments can be made to see him. The local Police Officers are also available to chat to the public at various times throughout the year – see posters for details. We do try to offer different events to you – just before Christmas we were able to invite Carol Rivers a local bestselling author of family stories to the library – this event was well attended – so thanks to all. If you don’t yet belong to the library, membership is free – we don’t just offer books to borrow – come in and take a look.

Local West Moors man to carry Olympic Torch Colin Fry has lived in West Moors for nearly 42 years, is married to Joy and loves it here! He has received confirmation to be one of the Torch bearers for the Olympic Relay. His leg of the journey is at Winfrith Newburgh, on Friday 13th July. “A pity the route does not go through West Moors, but I am delighted to be carrying it!”, says Colin. He was a past Chairman of Ferndown Round Table, (1981) when they raised monies for the building of West Moors Youth Club from carnivals and Christmas events in West Moors. His daughter Lyndsay sponsored him to carry the torch. He is celebrating 60 years of running (now 70) and still competes for Dorset Police, from which he retired in 1994 after 37 years service, as Chief Insp ector (d eputy command er) at Bournemouth. He have also enjoyed a successful running career, winning many Dorset and British Police cross country titles. Some 35 years ago he started raising monies for local and national causes to “give back something”. “In the early 80s we ran annual children's fun runs in West Moors for several years raising thousands of pounds towards the building of the then new Guide HQ in West Moors. “With the help of family, friends and colleagues, I have organised and run in many events over the years including several London Marathons. In 1990 I started the Moors Valley (Country Park) Charity run which celebrates 22 years in May.”, continues Colin.

From all these activities they have raised well over £250,000 to date and he continues to do so as a runner and Toastmaster for good causes. “My particular cause at present, is the Youth Cancer Trust at Bournemouth, which provides holidays for youngsters from all over the UK who suffer from cancer,” states Colin. In 2001 East Dorset District Council presented him with a special Community Service award. “I am thrilled to be carrying the torch, albeit at Winfrith but I shall be proud of my West Moors heritage!”, says Colin. We all wish Colin well and will be thinking of him on that Friday as a part of West Moors joins the Olympic movement!
