Understanding Hearing Loss The ear is made up of three parts. The outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sound is received by the outer ear and is channelled through the ear canal to the ear drum and the middle ear. The sound causes the ear drum to vibrate and results in the tiny bones in the middle ear tapping against each other, this vibration is transferred to the 30,000 tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Types of hearing loss 1. Conductive hearing loss: sound is blocked in the outer or middle ear. News from Westminster If you’ve read the newspapers recently you might think that politicians are only concerned about Brexit. This is not the case! Someone recently asked why politicians don’t stand up more for families, pointing out that as a British teenager you are more likely to own a smartphone than live with both parents. Perhaps some politicians do feel nervous speaking about the family. Maybe they are concerned that their enthusiasm for the family will be mistaken for an attack on single parents, many of whom work extremely hard to bring up their children. However, family life is too critical a topic to steer away from. It is vital that as a society, and indeed as a Government, we commit to strengthening and supporting parents. Especially when we remember that government accepts that family breakdown is a key driver of future poverty. I feel incredibly privileged that I have a strong and loving family –both my close family in Dorset, and in my wider extended family. Stronger families are vital for social mobility. The stability which they provide gives children the security that they need, which in turn helps to safeguard their mental and physical health, and by extension their behaviour and academic achievement. Just look at the life chances of children in care, and of care leavers. Statistics show that care leavers are more likely to get into trouble with the police, and to be at risk of poor educational outcomes, unemployment, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health issues. But it is not simply the statistics that we must change. It is the life chances of these children, and it is incumbent on everyone to ensure that those who have had the most difficult starts in life should still have the opportunity to flourish and fulfil their potential. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, and we must seek to provide a nurturing environment in which families can flourish, whilst at the same time acknowledging that no two families are the same. Whatever the make-up of an individual family, we should be enabling
children to reach their full potential as they grow to adulthood and actively participate in their communities and society at large. After all, what do most people want? A secure home. A job. A family. A sense of community and belonging. Good schools for our children and opportunities for the next generation. And there is such a thing as society. It starts with the family, which has been throughout history and remains the core unit in every society on earth. Politicians of all stripes should stand up for the family, which is there to pick up the pieces when things go wrong, and to celebrate when things go well. That is why the Government should focus on policies which promote family life, to ensure that every department is supporting families and strengthening our communities. Talking about Wildlife... Mini Print Exhibition in Swanage Over 500 mini works of fabulous, affordable and original art by more than 150 printmaker artists are on display in a mini print exhibition not to be missed. The vast range of inspiration, subject, technique, style and price is astounding and indeed the only theme running through this exhibition is the size of each of the works; just 10cm x 10cm. All works are for sale and the prices range from £25 - £300. Curated and presented in the most ingenious and yet simple format, it’s little wonder that in just its third year that organisers Red Dot Art has embarked on a UK wide tour visiting galleries in East Anglia, The Cotswold, Leeds and Oxford over a 6 month period from September 2018 to June 2019.

Aviator flies in for Friends of Wimborne Library’s AGM The Friends of Wimborne Library are looking forward to welcoming a special guest speaker at their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 10th October - 7pm at the Library.
AVIATOR Terry Adcock will be talking about his extraordinary life in the RAF for over 30 years and during the Cold War. By the age of 19 he was flying jet aircraft in Canada and by the age of 21 he was flying bombers with a crew behind him and the potential of delivering a nuclear weapon. Terry flew many aircraft but admits his first love was the BAE Lightning. He went on to become an Air Defence Pilot and ran two Air Defence Squadrons. Terry’s fascinating auto-biography ‘Luck is my Shadow’ also explains how his life was not always about flying and because of his love for the sea he was picked to work for a sea-going admiral. ‘It was the time when the Royal Navy ‘lost’ its aircraft carriers and Terry was sent to the RN to explain how the RAF would provide air cover. It was a thankless task but Terry was eventually fully accepted on the Flag Staff and integrated into the tasks, which took him to the Arctic, North and South Atlantic
and Pacific Oceans. Apart from being the organiser and adviser of all that flew he also became the Admiral’s Intelligence Officer. As a Wing Commander life seemed to be about politics. In Malaysia he was in charge of the day to day running of a 5 Nation Headquarters, the aim of which was to keep Singapore and Malaysia talking to one another after the UK had returned home in the 60s. He answered to a RAAF Air Vice Marshal with links to an embassy and the MOD.’ So come and meet Terry at the Friends’ AGM on Wednesday 10th October 7pm. We are first time buyers and have just got our mortgage agreed and found a place to buy! We’re keen to move in asap so what can we
expect and how long does the conveyancing process take? Buying your first home is such an exciting time but can also be very daunting as you enter the unknown of the conveyancing process! Once you have found the property you want to buy, it’s a good idea to contact your local Solicitor to get a quotation for the legal fees and disbursements so that you can plan your budget in advance and also obtain appropriate advice regarding a mortgage to finance your purchase. Your Solicitor will send to you various forms for completion and you will likely be asked for supporting documents like ID etc. and money on account. Make sure you return all the forms completed along with the other items requested promptly so that as soon as the papers arrive from the Seller’s Solicitor, work can begin. Your mortgage offer should be issued once the valuation has been carried out and searches will also need to be applied for in respect of the property.
We would also recommend that you instruct a surveyor to carry out a survey of the property. At this stage, your Solicitor will raise legal enquiries with the Seller’s Solicitor and you should have the opportunity to address any concerns you have as well. Once all investigations and searches have been completed, and any enquiries raised about the property satisfied you will be fully reported to and then you should be invited to sign the documentation in respect of the transaction. You will also usually need to ensure you have adequate Buildings Insurance in place. At this stage you should then be ready to
‘exchange contracts’ and this is the point of ‘no return’! The completion date is fixed on exchange and you can start packing! The day of completion is when the monies are actually paid over to your Seller’s solicitor and the legal title to the property is transferred to you. Once completion has taken place you should receive a tele-

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Hayden went to see Nellie, The Dorset Publications Campervan who had an accident a few months ago. She is now at the Old Van’s Home and like all good Grandparents she was keen to find out what her 14 year old ‘grandson’ had been up to over the summer. Hayden was very excited to tell her… “Well Nellie, I got to interview Red 10 at the Bournemouth Air Show!” He exclaimed with a big grin, nearly as big as Nellie’s silver shine. “I got to do this because I was asked by the Blue Skies Team. Blue Skies is a programme to help young people with their communication and leadership skills organised by the Jon Egging Trust. The Blue Skies Programme has helped me build up my confidence.” Hayden continued, “Before I was shy in asking people things, but now I have more self-confidence to talk to people: even those I don’t know, like Red 10!” The interview went like this… Hayden - What is your role within the Red Arrows Team? Adam (Red 10) - I’m the supervisor of the team. In the winter workout period I am the supervisor of the practices, looking at the display patterns and liaising with the authorities about the displays we are putting together. During the summer display season, I

Hayden and Squadron Leader Adam Collins am on the road with the team flying the spare aircraft and then supervising the displays and commentating about the displays. Hayden - What motivated you to work with the Red Arrows? Adam - It’s a unique opportunity and a unique job that when the opportunity came to apply for it, I couldn’t really turn it down. When the Red 10 job came up it was something that really appealed to me. That is why I am doing it. Hayden - What’s the best thing about being a Red Arrow? Adam - It is such a variety of things that we do. We have had such good weather this year, so we have done lots of full shows. I love meeting the public (like you to be honest) and the commentary. It is an honour to be the face of the RAF and also representing Great Britain when we go overseas. It is a unique job. Hayden - What is most challenging thing about being a Red? Adam - The variety, as we are constantly going from one thing to another. This weekend for example we have 5 or 6 Displays up and down the country so we are on a very tight timeline between displays. We do PR and media bits in between and it is really finding that balance

29 to do everything to the standards that we expect of ourselves, being able to switch from task to task and then to focus on it. It is quite tiring, you just have to manage that carefully, but really the best bits are the hardest bits as well. It really is one of the roles that is unique, you are always working hard, but it is always rewarding. Hayden – What has been your favourite time with the team? Adam – This is my first season so the whole season for me has been amazing and I shadowed my previous predecessor for couple of months last season. But really going to events like this, it is the reaction of the crowd when the jets arrive, and we start the display. It is that feedback from the crowd that is the real buzz. Hayden - What would you say to someone aspiring to be a Red Arrow pilot? Adam - I’d say to them that we all started somewhere. One of the aims of our RAF 100 this year is to inspire the next generation and really with our Shows that is what we are trying to do. All of us at the Red Arrows were at school once. We went to college or university, we did exams, we were doing revision and that kind of thing and it really is a step by step approach to then join the Air Force and go through flying training and ultimately join the Red Arrows, so my message really would be just to work hard and take it one step at a time. We all made it, so there is no reason why anyone else can’t!
Hayden – For my last question, what would you say to a young person who is struggling, to be the best they can be? Adam – Really it is that message that we have all started somewhere, we have all struggled at some point, be it through school or through education or going along through training and flying training. Keep persevering, take it one step at a time and all of sudden through struggling through something it becomes a great success. You are not going to get there instantly, so it is just working your way through it and having the right attitude, working hard and then eventually you will get there. Thank you. Great to meet you! Hayden turned back to Nellie, “Once I interviewed Red 10, I then got interviewed on the interview, by Bournemouth Air TV! It was quite a surprise. It made me really use all the skills I have learned from Blue Skies and I think I did ok, considering I wasn’t warned! Finally, I also got to meet the rest of the Red Arrows and other display teams. “I even had my photo taken with the pretty Wingwalkers (Nellie raised her wiper), as well as the Tiger’s Parachute Display Team from the British Army, Sally B’s pilots, the stunt pilot Rich Goodwin, the Strikemaster Pair and the new Team Raven were all there. How exciting was all that!” Nellie was super impressed with Hayden’s recitings and she hopes you had a great summer too! By Debbie Corney

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

Forest Holme to mark Hospice Care Week with ‘Heart My Hospice’ campaign Forest Holme Hospice, part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will be once again joining forces with more than 100 other hospices across the UK to help raise public awareness about hospice care during this year’s Hospice Care Week (8-12 October). The chosen theme of this year’s event is ‘Heart My Hospice’ and Forest Holme will be asking the local community to share their experiences of what hospice care means to them and help increase awareness about the range of care available in different settings. Forest Holme provides palliative and end-of-life care both within the Poole-based hospice itself and out in the community across a widegeographical area covering Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. However, as Anne Currie, Forest Holme Hospice Charity Manager, explains, it is the diversity of hospice care on offer at Forest Holme and how the charity helps to fund it, that they are particularly keen to focus on. “Forest Holme doesn’t just care for patients”, Anne begins, “it ensures that it is there for their loved ones too. Although Forest Holme is an NHS hospice, it is reliant on charitable donations to ensure that it can continue to provide
the best possible care for patients when they need us most. The charity supports all aspects of the hospice including; the 12 bedded in-patient ward, the purchasing of specialist equipment, the funding of educational posts, development nurse posts, complementary therapies, plus counselling and bereavement support to patients and their families.” One person, who has first-hand experience of the extended care Forest Holme offers to family and loved-ones, is 24-year-old Sammy-Jo Stanley, who has subsequently helped raise nearly £9,000 for the hospice as a thank you. She said, “Forest Holme is an incredible hospice, with such caring and kind people who are understanding and supportive when you are going through such a difficult time. Forest Holme for me was a place I first turned to when my Nan passed away from cancer in October 2009. At 15 I really needed guidance on how to deal with the grief and the hospice counselling team pulled me through, helping me to come to terms with the grief process. Also, their outstanding care when my mum was diagnosed with cancer was incredible and, once again, their counselling service provided both

support to my family and myself. This hospice touches many people’s lives at such a devastating time in life and their support and kindness always shines through.” Forest Holme, who will be celebrating its 25th anniversary next year, will be using Hospice Care Week to help spread the word about the range of services that they provide for both patients and their loved-ones, as well as highlighting that hospice care is free and not confined to a building but also available at home through its own community nurses.
Charity Manager, Anne Currie, said, “We are delighted to support this national awareness-raising drive. We want to use it to help spread the word about hospice care and what it encompasses, while also dispelling some of the myths surrounding it. “We will also be encouraging our supporters to share their stories, experiences and memories of hospice care, especially through social media using the hashtag #IHeartForestHolme.”

Wimborne’s community skate park enhanced by Talbot Village Trust Talbot Village Trust has provided the Streetlight Project in Wimborne with just under £7,000 to fit soundproofing in the local skate park café.
The Streetlight Project is a Christian charity which runs the skate park and community café in Wimborne, which is open to people of all ages. It first opened in 2014, to support and benefit the local community with the aim that people would come together to use the centre. More recently the centre required funding from Talbot Village Trust, the local grant giving charity, to soundproof the café floor as there is a recording studio below the café in the centre. Andy Putt, project director of Streetlight, explained: “We required help from Talbot Village Trust to resolve a sound issue in our cafe, by fitting a soundproof floor and acoustic seal. Since receiving the Trust’s grant and having the new equipment fitted, we can now accommodate more bookings for the private hire of our café. The extra financial support which we have received through more bookings, has allowed the centre to

Andy brought a completely unique concept to Wimborne with the vision to create a hub in the community which will support and benefit young people and their families within the town. “Our grant has been used to enhance the project’s facilities and it is fantastic to see how many people are able to enjoy the centre that encourages fitness and socialisation with others.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in the autumn of this year. Lieutenant of Dorset Mr. Angus Campbell Andrew and his wife Zahra, who have three and Mrs. Campbell, the Chair of East adult children and four grandchildren, are Dorset District Council Cllr Mrs Toni delighted to have moved to Wimborne Coombs, the Deputy Mayor of Wimborne Minster and are looking forward to Minster, Cllr Shane Bartlett and the Vice being involved in Church and Civic Life Chairman of Dorset County Council, throughout the Benefice. He conducted Cllr David Shortell and Mrs Shortell. A his first service in the Minster on Sunday group of 70 Parishioners from Andrews 9th September, which is also the Minsters former Parish of West Moors, where Patronal Festival. This year the Service he had been Vicar since 2005 attended marked the 1300th anniversary of the death along with people from Verwood where of our Patron Saint, St Cuthburga. he had served his Curacy back in 2001.
