Lewis-Manning Hospice Care receives electric vehicle donation from Superior Lewis-Manning Hospice Care has taken delivery of an electric vehicle, courtesy of local manufacturer Superior, to help it provide hospice care services to people with lifelimiting illnesses across Poole, Purbeck and east Dorset.

our carbon footprint without impacting on the quality of care our patients receive. We are passionate about our community and the environment, that’s why we are so thrilled to be using the zero emissions vehicle.”

The Wimborne-based family-run manufacturer of o-rings and seals has purchased a Nissan e-NV200 van which will be used by the hospice’s Better Breathing Clinic team and other vital hospice care services teams to transport staff and equipment to community-based centres, supporting patients living with debilitating and often frightening respiratory conditions, such as COPD and lung cancer.

Superior’s Managing Director, Tim Brown MBE, adds: “We’re delighted at the opportunity to support LewisManning Hospice Care and donate this commercial vehicle to assist them in their incredible day-to-day work. After speaking with the charity, we decided that the best thing we could do for them was to support the hospice’s Better Breathing Clinic and provide a vehicle to accommodate their day-to day needs. We felt that a zero emissions vehicle would be the ideal way to help expand their invaluable service and allow them to take it out into the community where it is needed most, and in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.”

As a mobile clinic, the 100 percent electric Nissan e-NV200, with a 40kWh battery, will enable the hospice to travel up to 187 miles on a single charge throughout the local community. Clare Gallie, chief executive at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, says: “We are incredibly grateful to Superior for this very kind and generous donation. The van will enable the charity to bring our services closer to home, where we’ll be able to visit patients and their loved ones in the county, without extra mileage costs to the hospice and reducing 6

Dudsbury Golf Club Seniors Section Raises £3119 For John Thornton Young Achievers! The Seniors Captain of Dudsbury Golf Club, Rob Bury, selected the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) as his ‘Charity of the Year’ in 2020 and due to the restrictions with Covid the partnership ran for two years. Despite all the challenges Rob (pictured right below) presented Pete Thornton, Chairman of the JTYAF (pictured left), with a cheque for a staggering £3119! To raise such a huge amount mid pandemic, is an outstanding achievement and the JTYAF would like to thank all those who organised and took part in the Charity Golf Days. The amount of time and effort that goes into ensuring that these events are a success cannot be underestimated and is greatly appreciated. This fantastic support will make a massive difference to the opportunities that will be provided for local young people in the year ahead. All funds raised will help to provide bursaries and scholarships for local young people from a wide array of youth organisations directly supporting their personal development and the pursuit of their ambitions. As an example of the difference an amount of £3119 will make, these are some recent awards that the Dudsbury Seniors Section fundraising would have made possible: • A young man from Ferndown Upper School who is a musician with the Bournemouth Youth Marching Band, has an ambition to join the Royal Marines Corp Band. He will use his scholarship to buy a cornet.

Park in Devon. Another 5 disadvantaged pupils will also visit the New Forest Water Park. • A Looked After Child who experiences many difficulties will take part in a residential activities’ week at the Land and Wave Centre in Swanage. The trip would not be possible without JTYAF support and will help to raise his spirits and boost his confidence. Rob commented, “I have been privileged to know Peter and Linda Thornton for over thirty years, so it was both an honour and a pleasure to nominate the “John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation” as my charity for the duration of my Seniors Captaincy of Dudsbury Golf Club. The amount raised, in spite of the pandemic, was a tribute a young man, born and raised locally, who gave his life for his country and in whose memory young people are being helped to achieve their goals. Grateful thanks are due to the members of the Seniors Section at Dudsbury Golf Club for their generosity” Pete Thornton commented, “Young people are experiencing many challenges in these uncertain and difficult times and need our support more than ever before. We really can’t thank the Dudsbury Seniors enough for helping us to continue to do the work we do.” For more information about the JTYAF and the work they do, please visit www.jtyaf.org

• A young lady who is also a student at Ferndown Upper School has been cheerleading since she was 6 years old and has received a scholarship to pay for her expenses to attend ‘The Summit’ cheerleading competition in Florida. • Funding has provided the opportunity for 3 disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils at St Michael’s Middle School to join their peers for a 5-day outdoor education trip to Holne

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile. Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems. When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Justin Friel it became clear that these values have been held dear for a

number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.

All C2C employees operate a strict social distancing policy.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Justin commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”. Golden Oldie Even after four decades in the spotlight, actor Gary Oldman is still reaching out for more. South Londoner Gary Oldman, who lives in Los Angeles with fifth wife Gisele Schmidt, has just celebrated 40 years on screen. Having worked for many of the world’s most renowned filmmakers – Francis Ford Coppola, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Zemeckis to name but a few – the actor and director is most certainly Hollywood royalty. Bolstering this tag are figures from The Hollywood Reporter that place him top of the list of the highest grossing actors of all time with films he has either acted in or directed generating over $4bn in the United States and $10bn worldwide. He is a man wrapped in the comfort and contentment of the entertainment industry, sure; yet he’s just as happy having a pint in a spit ‘n’ sawdust pub as he is hobnobbing with the elite in LA.

“I think, in a strange way, what’s made me this way has been success,” he begins. “Many of us dream of a life that’s away from everything we’ve known; and for a while, that’s a nice little piece of escapism we can grab hold of and take with us. “Yet very quickly when I saw this other world opening up in front of me, my overriding thought was that, while I wanted a bit of it, I didn’t want to lose the people and places I grew up in and around. “It’s like anything you’re threatened with losing – it just makes you grab hold of it a little tighter.” As for the wealth and the success, Oldman has very clear thoughts about that too. “My films have garnered a lot of money, sure. I wish I had a cut,” he laughs. Most recently excelling in the Hitman’s Bodyguard project, and smart drama such as The Woman in the Window and Crisis, Oldman is still mixing up genres and characters, as he looks for a way

12

to preserve creativity, albeit at an age where many of his peers take the easy option. “I can’t see myself ever doing that easy option,” he says. “That’s just not me – I think I’d rather retire completely than do something my heart and mind weren’t totally committed to.” Oldman has always been this way, going right back to the start. Gary Oldman studied with the Young People’s Theatre in Greenwich and the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Sidcup, Kent, obtaining a BA in Acting in 1979. He was the first in his class to receive professional work as an actor and has also gone on to clinch five BAFTAs, the most recent as Best Actor in Darkest Hour. “It’s my career, my life, my world, and I’d be lost without it!”

All white on the night How to maintain typically tremendous teeth, capable of raising a smile on any occasion. The basics Unequivocally, the best way to keep your teeth in gleaming second-glance demand, is to tend to your own regular, concerted, dedicated dental hygiene routine. It’s a basic necessity for anyone who wants to show off a smile, and while a humble toothbrush will never give you that feeling of semi-pampering you receive when going for a trip to the cosmetic dental specialist, regular brushing – with a dedicated teeth whitening toothpaste – will go a long way towards keeping your pearly whites looking their best. Seize the power When electric toothbrushes first hit the market in the early Nineties, many people thought them a gimmick, and something for people too lazy to brush their own teeth properly. The reality though is different – in tests, electric toothbrushes consistently clean better than

their manual counterparts, so consider investing in one if you’re serious about making your smile shine. Floss like a boss Flossing is a great way to minimise the build-up of plaque, the off-white matter that builds up on and in between your teeth that produces that gravelly, slightly unclean sensation when you run your tongue over the top. Flossing is the number one dental process that we fail to stick to, but doing it every day will make a huge visible difference. Stain removal Ever wondered why some toothpastes contain baking soda? It’s because the soda content creates an alkaline environment in your mouth which, over time, will whiten your teeth. While some baking soda toothpastes are priced highly, the reality is you don’t need to buy a fancy one as they all work in much the same way. What’s more, you can even make your own at home. Just mix a

14

little baking powder with your regular toothpaste, then follow up with apple cider vinegar diluted in water to kill any remaining bacteria. Stain prevention Prevention is better than cure, so in the first instance, consider cutting down on black coffee and red wine. For sugar-rich soft drinks, drink them through a straw as this rather more direct process limits the time stain-happy liquids swill around in the mouth. Also try to load up your diet in foods that are rich in calcium, while including crunchy vegetables such as apples and carrots will actually create the action of removing plaque as you chew. A slightly leftfield method for keeping your mouth and breath fresh throughout the day is to try ‘oil pulling’. Once a day swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth – keep it there for around 15minutes. The oil pulls all bacteria out of your mouth, and the science suggests it brightens teeth too.

Chocs Away Gift ideas for your little ones that don’t involve copious amounts of sugar. Our kids’ association of chocolate with Easter is, let’s be honest, harmless enough; yet this special time of the year is about so much more than that. To remind our youngsters of this fact, why not start early in planning this year’s celebrations by exploring a range of Easter ideas that don’t involve chocolate? How appetising! 1. Something to wear From cute bunny slippers to funny, furry onesies, there are some beautiful, original and, yes, even stylish Easter-themed clothes that are sure to delight your kids. 2. Something to treasure Why not invest in an Easter gift that will last into adulthood? Perhaps a locket or charm bracelet, or even just a new

money, jewellery, or keepsake box. What’s best is that in years to come, long after the chocolate has been forgotten, with a special gift they’ll still be able to look back and cherish the memories. 3. Something to do If you don’t want your Easter egg hunt to end in a gorge-fest, simply use decorative eggs which children can swap for small prizes. All the fun without the sugar crash! 4. Somewhere to go Why not surprise your family with a little Easter daytrip out somewhere such as a farm or petting zoo? A little research may even reveal somewhere local where you can see lambs being born… an experience which is sure to astound and delight both young and old. 5. Something to make Create your own Easter bonnets, paint eggs or stones, make some

16

bunting, or even teach your children how to knit or crochet toy bunnies and chicks. 6. Something to play with You can likely find some charming wooden gifts in your local independent toy shop which will stimulate both learning and play, or perhaps make some puppets to create a little Easter-themed theatre show! 7. Something to read There are some really charming books that will help your kids learn about and celebrate the wonders of Eastertime. You could also look out for a sticker or activity book, or even create your own Easter scrapbook. 8. Something to give Easter is a time of love and hope, and what better way to instil those values into your little ones than by giving to those in need in your local community? Take food to your local food bank or visit older people who may appreciate the company. Remember, giving is the greatest gift of them all!

Talking about Wildlife...

Win for wildlife The marsh fritillary is one of the most interesting butterflies in Dorset and is the most attractive and colourful of the fritillaries. Often considered the ‘stained glass window’ of butterflies, they have small wings but are very recognisable with a bright, intricate pattern of white, orange and black markings. The damp grassland habitat, which is their main habitat, has been lost nationally due to agricultural improvement and drainage in the landscape. However, due to careful habitat management over the last 10 years, they have been found to be thriving on one of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, Bracketts Coppice. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Living Landscapes Ecologist, Steve Masters said, “The most reliable method to record the numbers of marsh fritillaries is to count the larva webs in autumn or in spring after the winter hibernation. Eggs are laid in large batches, of up to 300, and the caterpillars aggregate in webs which can be counted relatively easily.” Marsh fritillaries prefer to hibernate in tussocks of grass as caterpillars (which are jet black in colour) and emerge in warm weather – as early as February or March, if the winter isn’t too cold. Basking in the sun as caterpillars, they will then pupate and emerge as adult butterflies on the wing in late May, early June. These remarkable butterflies have a few challenges ahead of them including their loss of habitat, but also the parasitic wasp, which can be deadly to them by laying their eggs inside the caterpillar and devouring it. Steve continues, “Their food plant is Devils 18

bit-scabious, and we have plenty of that at Bracketts Coppice. Marsh fritillaries love damp grassland, purple moor grass, and chalk, all of which we have in west Dorset. To help accommodate these butterflies we’ve adapted the management of Brackett’s Coppice slightly to ensure the amount of grazing creates the right habitat for them, providing the right structure for all stages of their life cycle. We even removed one field from the previous hay cutting regime and grazed instead, and we were delighted to see marsh fritillaries breeding in this field for the first time, as a result.” These management techniques are being used on other suitable nature reserves, and in 2019, the highest number of marsh fritillary larval webs, since monitoring began, were found on Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve in west Dorset, with 38 being counted. Magnificent Motors How a decade of tech has transformed our travels. 1. Park Assist The slow evolution of finding a space to park is set to pick up pace in 2022, with fully automated parking making bumps and scrapes on our bodywork and wheels a thing of the past. Even many budget new cars will come with the first level of assisted parking, which is a rear-view reversing camera; while 360 view technology is also on the rise. For those of a slightly more nervous disposition when it comes to letting your car park itself, Automated Park Assist allows control of the brake and accelerator, with the car doing the steering. 2. Smartphone integration In years to come we may well look back and smile knowingly at the plethora of leads and adaptors we once used to need to connect our phones, music players and other devices to the car.

In modern motoring, infotainment systems are all run through a simple dock, or connect via Bluetooth, allowing mirroring and voice recognition for functionality, and of course handsfree voice calls. This is yet another technological innovation that shouts convenience, though also makes the driving experience considerably safer. 3. Adaptive Cruise Control This function, where your car glides comfortably at a set speed, always had the propensity to worry casual motorists, given sudden requirements to break, accelerate or change lanes. The improvement of adaptive technology and your car’s awareness of other vehicles and possible hazards around it means it can react to danger even before the brain does. For instance, if a car slows ahead of you, ACC recognises this change and drops speed accordingly, only accelerating again when the vehicle in front has done the same. 4. Blind Spot Monitoring Almost every driver,

20

at some point, has failed to notice something in his or her blind spot, and this breakdown between your wing mirrors and the eye’s limitations of looking to the side without turning your neck, leads to a high number of collisions. Again though, technology has stepped up to fill the void, literally, with a system able to detect another vehicle present in your blind spot, thus triggering a light-up indicator that appears on the dashboard display. 5. Heads-up Display We check our speed more than anything else on the dashboard, yet the very act means us taking our eyes off the road. Clever technology now enables this information to be shone up onto the windscreen, as you would have with a hologram, with additional information, even directions, being displayed, so that you may never need to move your line of sight from the road.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Own up - who is finally ready for some better springtime weather? With the two early winter months hopefully almost well and truly behind us, what could be better than an opportunity to emerge from hibernation and look around our beautiful county for some warmer weather inspiration? So why not enjoy a good look at what our local areas have to offer, with another smattering of quirky facts?

1

Did you know that King George III came to Dorset for his convalescence? History makes it clear that the king suffered from frequent bouts of illness and often he would spend time recuperating in healthier environments. King George visited Weymouth in late 1780 and would revisit the town many times in the following years. In fact, the King would indulge in daily sea bathing and a summer royal residence, Gloucester Lodge, was constructed for him to be able to enjoy comfortable access to what Dorset had to offer. As much as the town did good for King George, the king did much for the reputation and popularity of the seaside escape of Weymouth.

2

Have you visited Dead Man’s Bay? Better known as Chesil Cove, this wonderful part of the coastline is a beautiful location to visit on the Isle of Portland and yet, lurking underneath its waters are the watery tombs of countless vessels, cargo and perhaps even of sailors from a bygone era. Known as one of the worst locations for ships to succumb to the mighty powers of the sea, local fishermen even designed their own special boat to be able to better withstand the danger of being shipwrecked.

3

Were you aware that the picturesque hamlet of Bincombe was once the site of an unfortunate military incident in the reign of King George III? Two large camps had been settled in the Bincombe area and two soldiers deserted. The story has become somewhat blurred, with some stating that it was for the purpose of revealing military secrets about the camps and others stating that it was because one soldier had a local sweetheart who eventually gave him up for her betrothed. Thomas Hardy’s version of the events is immortalised in his work The Melancholy Hussar. Tragically, in either version of the story, both soldiers were court martialled and shot, their stories ever open to speculation!

4 Did you know that the oldest gliding club in Dorset was founded in 1929? Club members and gliding enthusiasts would bravely launch themselves from Lulworth! Remarkably, although the club is the oldest in the county, it also bears the distinction of being one of the smallest in Britain though is renowned for its humble origins and friendly approach even today! The gliding club has even produced pilots who have gone on to represent Great Britain in men and women’s national and international competitions! Did you know that Lulworth Castle has been in the ownership of the same family for more than 380 years? As far back as 1641, the hunting lodge was purchased by Humphrey Weld who was later governor of Portland and today the building is still a wonderful insight into, not only Dorset’s heritage through the years, but also that of one fascinating family line.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In a new column beginning in this issue, Martin Lewis discusses the perils of car insurance. The cost of motoring is highly topical right now. From soaring fuel prices to electric cars right the way through to low emission zones, we’ve perhaps never had to fight our way through so much commotion and noise where our wheels are concerned. While so much seems fluid as far as the affordability of our cars goes, one thing that seems constant – constantly high – is the cost of car insurance. I’m always asked what people should look for when they are searching for car insurance, and above everything else I would recommend they focus on price.

be a better product. Price should and will always be the core driver for most people because car insurance is a grudge purchase. As for securing that best price, while most insurers are on price comparison sites, some – Aviva, Direct Line etc. – are not, so check between the two and always try to go through a cashback site to bring down the price further. Finally, a word about gender equality on car insurance

I think there’s a slight myth in the insurance world that if you pay more you are going to get a better claim. If you’re going for a high-street insurance policy and you pay £300 or £500, don’t assume that the £500 will premiums. A few years ago regulations came in designed to make things more equal, but all the evidence shows there is still a large disparity between prices

28

for men and women. I’ve wrestled with this a lot – car insurance prices represent a behavioural difference between a man and a woman, so why should we be stereotyped that we will all behave like the rest of our gender? Having said that, should we not be allowed to discriminate on age as well because an 18-year-old drives in a different way to a 58-yearold? Ultimately, insurance is a risk-based product and there are always winners and losers in these things. Funnily enough, in the first big campaign for gender equality in insurance, the big loser was young women because their prices went up, which is perhaps not always what people think of when they talk about equality campaigns: women losing out. So, there’s a balance between principle and practice here, and I think principle can win at practice’s cost.

A31 Ringwood Bridge Replacement and Widening Scheme National Highways is undertaking works to widen the westbound carriageway of the A31 to three lanes between Ringwood town centre and the B3081 Verwood Underpass, and to replace the road bridges over the River Avon and Bickerley Millstream. In order to carry out the works, a full westbound closure is needed and a contraflow will be put in place retaining two lanes of westbound and eastbound traffic. The slip road where traffic joins the westbound carriageway from Ringwood is now closed until completion of the project in November 2022. A diversion route is in place via the Poulner junction – traffic wanting to join the A31 westbound at Ringwood will need to join the eastbound carriageway, exit at Poulner and join the A31 westbound. In order to protect the workforce, one lane of northbound Mansfield Road (between the Furlong and A31 roundabouts) will be closed until the end of March 2022.

30

The contraflow is expected to be in place by 26 January 2022. Once the contraflow is in place, both the Verwood eastbound on-slip (which has already been closed) and westbound off-slip will be closed, with traffic being diverted via the Ashley Heath roundabout. Full details of the scheme are available on the National Highways website where you can also provide feedback to the project team and register for updates. The New Forest National Park Authority and New Forest Animal Accident Reduction Group have put out a plea to drivers to follow official diversions (rather than travelling on unfenced roads) during upcoming A31 and A35 road closures at a time of year when New Forest livestock are most at risk.

Wandering On Wanderers take the glory in the first ever FA Cup final, 150 years ago. In an inaugural FA Cup final of many peculiarities, perhaps the most stark is the fact only 2,000 people turned up at the Kennington Oval on March 16th, 1872 to watch winners Wanderers take on Royal Engineers. As a competition, perhaps fans were suspicious of its validity. Firstly, only 15 teams entered. Wanderers’ eventual finalists, Royal Engineers were comprised, predictably, of engineers from the British Army, and were based in Chatham, Kent. Wanderers were from relatively nearby in Leytonstone. Both sides received byes in the first round, and won away ties in the second. Then, in the quarter-final, Engineers beat Hampstead Heathens 2-0, while Wanderers’ goalless draw with Crystal Palace saw both sides progress through to the semis, peculiarly. All semi-finals were to be played at the Kennington Oval, and after Scottish club Queens

Park – who had received walkovers and byes up to this stage – played out a 0-0 draw with Wanderers, they took the decision to withdraw rather than face another lengthy trip down from Glasgow. This sent Wanderers through to the final, to face Engineers, who had seen off the Crystal Palace 3-0 after an initial goalless draw. In the final, another tight game was decided by a solitary goal, with Morton Betts, who was playing under the pseudonym A.H. Chequer, making the decisive contribution for Wanderers after 15 minutes. The two teams brought rather differing styles of play to the event. Wanderers’ tactic was for players to dribble the ball through defensive lines in trying to get it near the goal. One of these rugby-like forays

led to Edmund Cresswell, of Engineers, suffering a broken collarbone, but with no substitutes, he had to see out the remainder of the match as a “passenger” on the wing. Engineers favoured a more progressive passing approach to the game, though even this attempt at fluidity didn’t change what newspaper The Field described as “the fastest and hardest match that has ever been seen at The Oval”. Ultimately, the victors, it was said, displayed “some of the best play, individually and collectively, that has ever been shown in an Association game,” and returned back to Leytonstone with the honours (although they’d have to wait another month for the trophy to be presented to them). And so the first ever FA Cup final was done. In the years that followed, Wanderers folded little more than a decade later, though Engineers played on as one of the country’s leading amateur sides.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner reveals his top tenets for architectural life and living happily. It’s an architect’s job to figure out what are the important things in our lives; it’s to organise space and light and volume that we live in, and to provide the best possible experiences for us to flourish. When you think of it like that, architecture comes with a very simple a set of objectives really, doesn’t it? I think it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of those things. We are inspired and driven and teased almost by what see on the television and in magazines. We are made to suppose that bigger is better, when in reality it really isn’t. I often encourage people to look after the very basic elements

34

of what comprises our homes – things like storage, things like views up to the sky. I try to steer them away from mass or complication, because the fact is the more stuff we fill our lives with, the more there is to go wrong. In the same manner, happiness really doesn’t reside in numbers - it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. And so if you can’t afford somewhere big don’t worry, it’s a false God. A big place won’t bring you happiness - what brings you happiness in the end is relationships with human beings. Ultimately, good architecture is a reflection of your soul, rather than an extension of your being. You should design your space so that it complements who you are as a person. I have seen many houses on Grand Designs that take seemingly normal people into wild expressions of contemporary ambition – it’s like they have epiphanies in the design process of a build and have convinced

themselves that they are ready to undergo an entire image change in the construction of their home. Ultimately, what generally happens is that once they’ve lived out that fantasy for six months or a year or however long, they realise they didn’t want that level of change after all, and find themselves making adjustments so that their living space begins to come back round to being a bit safer, a bit more sanitised, a bit more comfortable. That’s not to say we shouldn’t reach out and be ambitious – just be ambitious in terms of what’s true to yourself, rather than true to what you’ve seen online. Be pragmatic, be disciplined and connect to those very primal desires you have, rather than those of fantasy and outrageous aspiration. Focus on the boring stuff first - it will actually serve you well.

Art exhibition goes on tour Pictures for The Beehive, the art exhibition raising funds for Diverse Abilities’ Splash Appeal, is heading on tour to showcase drawings of the people supported by the disability charity. The first showing of this exhibition in September 2021 was accompanied by an auction of donated work by acclaimed artists including Antony Gormley, Maggi Hambling and Paula Rego. The event raised over £100,000 towards The Splash Appeal. These drawings, done at The Beehive over the past two years, will now travel the country on a roadshow, launching at Pavilion in the Park in Poundbury and culminating in an event at Apothecaries Hall in London later this year. Henrietta Young, artist and curator of the exhibition, commented: “It was a great privilege to get to know and make friends with the people at The Beehive, and the whole business of drawing and being drawn was an

36

extraordinary experience for everyone involved in the project. We hope that people viewing the resulting work will come away with a better understanding of disability.” Visitors are invited to visit the exhibition at Poundbury’s Pavilion in the Park on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 March. It is open to the public between 9am and 5pm and is free to attend. Helen Mortimer, development manager at Diverse Abilities, added: “Henrietta’s passion to raise the visibility of those with disabilities through art is remarkable. It is very exciting to take these portraits on tour, raising awareness in Dorset and beyond, and hopefully funds towards the desperately needed hydrotherapy pool.” Visit thesplashappeal.org.uk/events to find out more about the opening event and subsequent dates of the exhibition.

John Torrode’s AussieStyle Grain Bowl Introduction

Who knows whether travel this year between Australia and the UK is going to be possible? So while I can’t offer up sun swept beaches and clear seas with absolute certainty, I do have an original meal option from the Southern Hemisphere that will at least make holidaying at home more bearable… I hope! My Aussie grain bowl recipe works as a really good alternative to cereal, which I don’t eat because I don’t have milk. And as a full-on protein brunch it’s just as good, with a few carbs added for good measure. For grains, us Aussies will always mix them up and play around with different combinations. Sometimes I have the meal cold and other times hot; sometimes with sprouted beans and on occasions without. My favourite is the chicken and avocado combo.

Top Tip

Method

• Gather the grains at the start of the week, then put them in the fridge and just bring out the bits that you need each day for breakfast.

1. In a serving bowl, mix the cooked grains with the spring onions and chopped parsley.

•There are plenty of new and exciting grains coming on the market, but grains that are good for this dish include quinoa, black quinoa, red rice, brown and wild rice, green lentils, pearl barley, bulgur, chickpeas, farro, round barley, pinhead oatmeal, buckwheat, spelt, and whole rye. Simply cook them according to the packet instructions, then cool quickly and store in a tightly covered container in the fridge.

2. Make the dressing by mixing together the tahini, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, lime juice, chilli and ginger in a small bowl. Season to taste with a little salt.

Ingredients (serves at least 2) • 4 different cooked (cold) grains – about half a cup (3 tablespoons) of each • 2 spring onions, finely sliced • 2 handfuls of fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped For the dressing • 2 teaspoons tahini • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar • 4 teaspoons fresh lime juice • 1 long fresh red chilli, finely diced

3. Drizzle a little dressing over the mixed grains and toss gently to mix.

• small thumb-sized piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and very finely diced

4. Top with the chicken, avocado and eggs (if using), then drizzle over some more dressing. Finish with the beansprouts. This is the best it is going to look, so it’s time to get stuck in.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van My dream has always been to have a sea view. The blue beyond, the changing skies and the soft sand to take endless walks has been an illusion of mine for many years. Daichi, our Modern Magazines campervan of course loves his trips to the seaside, and you see him with his surfboard and dolphin as he travels around our British Isles. So, you may have noticed we have been ‘quiet’ for a couple of months with no stories to tell of journeys near or far. Well, I am delighted to say that we have moved… to that very place I dreamed of… overlooking the delightful blue shimmering sea and sands of Weymouth Beach. It may not be a Greek Island or a Caribbean beach, but Daichi is in his element - and so are we! Not only have we moved our location, but in addition to that we bought an ice-cream parlour to go with it. How outrageous is that! Weymouth is wonderful. It has character, local people who care for each other and a sense of community. It can be very lively (we have yet to

Horses, and dogs, play in the “garden” 40

Me and my view! spend a whole summer here…) and yet is very peaceful at night when the stars are out, and the silky sand is deserted. The beach is my new garden and I do laugh about sharing it with others and having to build a bigger fence, but seriously I love it. Each morning I wake up I go into the lounge, smile and say, “Hello view!” This came out of the blue, literally. I suppose it is a lesson in keeping a dream alive, no matter how surreal it may seem. Some may remember that we visited Bovisand and then Cawsand in between various Lockdowns of 2020. I saw a shop front in Cawsand, overlooking the sea, that was for sale with a flat above it. I laughed and said “oh that would make a great Ice-cream Parlour. Little did I know. You do have to be careful what you decide sometimes… We even looked at other properties that were for sale there, which again looked out to that far reaching beyond, the waters of our English Channel. Devon and Cornwall are amazing, but moving that far away, let alone a Greek island,

really was not what we wanted, so it was a dream I could create, without seriously considering it. So I thought. However, on returning home I started to look at properties in Dorset with sea views. I came across one which said ‘12-bedroom house, Weymouth Esplanade £380,000’. I could not believe it, so we made an appointment to see it. Well, it turned out to be a Guest House. The people were lovely and I could see the appeal. We looked at 5 or 6 more of these Guest Houses, but then I saw what we have now… two holiday flats, an owner’s flat and an ice-cream parlour on the Esplanade with everything in the town just five minutes walk away. Ten months later we made it! That is the shortened version… We have renovated the parlour with its bright pink seats and mint green walls which should be open by the time you read this. We have a juke box with good old sixties music, two rooms with 28 seats inside and seating for 16 more outside. It is not anything we have done before. Hayden will run it with Emma and Lindsey who fortunately do know what they are doing. “Wafflicious” is

Wafflicious will be ready for you...

I do love to be beside the seaside its name, and we will have waffles (it is all in the name you know…), delicious Marshfield ice-cream, homemade cakes, coffee, tea and even ice-cream for your dog. With a dog friendly beach all year round, it is a great place to bring your four-legged friend for the run of his or her life. I watch them daily jumping, swimming, darting around and catching balls. It is a delight to see. The holiday lets are as the previous owner left them with a few changes and ready to welcome guests. We already have bookings which is great. With a new shop front office for our magazines, just five minutes walk away, I could not be happier. It has been a test of persistence, that is for sure, but it shows that a dream can become a reality and sometimes you get even more than you bargained for! Daichi will be visiting lots of local places and for sure he will update you on the trials and tribulations, as well as the joys of serving ice-cream. He may put on some weight and eat all the profits if we are not careful! Could you ever imagine that? Daichi and the family hope you have some dreams too… you never know where they may lead you. In Pursuit of Knowledge A voyage into learning and insight this month, with four engaging and intriguing books to look out for. The Jaws Book: New Perspectives on the Classic Summer Blockbuster by I.Q. Hunter After almost 50 years, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws remains the definitive summer blockbuster, a cultural phenomenon with a fierce and dedicated fan base. The Jaws Book: New Perspectives on the Classic Summer Blockbuster is an exciting, illustrated collection of new critical essays that offers the first detailed and comprehensive overview of the film’s significant place in cinema history. Bringing together established and young scholars, the book includes contributions from leading international writers on popular cinema, and covers such diverse topics as the film’s release, reception and canonicity, its representation of masculinity and children, the use of landscape and the ocean, its galvanising impact on the horror genre, and contemporary Hollywood itself. Published by Bloomsbury on March 24th The Palace Papers by Tina Brown Tina Brown takes you inside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in this riveting story about the members of the royal family. Encapsulating everything following the death of Princess Diana to today, Brown covers Prince Charles’s

42

marriage to Camilla, the allegations around Prince Andrew, the rise in popularity of Kate Middleton, the tension between William and Harry, and the eventual defection of Harry and Meghan. Whether a self-appointed royalist or otherwise, our intense desire to lift the lid on the lives of those at the top of the social tree will always make tomes such as this one of the most anticipated books of the year. Published by Penguin Random House on March 22nd Kraftwerk’s Computer World by Steve Tupai Francis Kraftwerk’s most concise and focused conceptual statement, Computer World was also their most influential album, paving the way for a range of new musical styles and genres. This book explores the band’s revolutionary sonic template, and their lyrical obsessions in detail, exploring transition, via theories of post-humanism, cybernetics and the anthropology of transnationalism.

It is a deep read that sandwiches electronic music in between philosophy and culture, to produce cherished coffee table reading. Published by Bloomsbury on April 7th The Changing Face of Burberry: Britishness, Heritage, Labour and Consumption by Sian Weston As a brand that’s circumnavigated catwalk and terrace culture, Burberry presents itself as ultimately unique, with its output in the 21st century a quintessential notion of British tradition. The Changing Face of Burberry examines how the company successfully built this sense of tradition and how it has retained and capitalised on it within contemporary consumer culture, providing an authoritative account of shifting forms of British identity, consumer culture and fashion production over two centuries. Delores and her friends are looking for their forever home

Over recent months, we have seen a huge increase in calls for help with rehoming of rabbits and guinea pigs. We try to help everybody who needs our assistance and currently, we have over 20 fluffy little friends we are seeking new homes for. Details of our small animals are on our website, but let us tell you about a few of them… Delores, pictured above right, is a 2 year old female lop. Delores lives with Chewie and Casper. The two boys have been neutered but we do not know if Delores has been. They would all love to stay together as a group, but we would consider splitting them provided that the rabbit leaving was to go to a home as a companion to another rabbit. Piggles and Cocoa are two male guinea pigs. Piggles is 18 months old and Cocoa is 12 months old. They are living together and are very friendly and cuddly. Piggles and Cocoa are used to children. They are lively boys. If you are able to offer Delores of any of her lovely friends, forever home or a foster home, please contact our office on 01202 875000, e-mail: admin@waggytails.org.uk or visit our website www.waggytails.org.uk Waggy Tails Rescue are in need of more foster homes. If you are 46

at home most of the time, have a secure garden and experienced with dogs then please give us a ring and discuss fostering for us. It is a very rewarding experience and enables us to continue helping these dogs. (no children under 10 in the house please) Waggy Tails Rescue is a registered charity based in Dorset. We rescue and rehome dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a new home. Top of the froth Five of the best milk frothers on the market. When you consider the fact we consume an estimated 120 million cups of coffee every single day in the UK, it’s clear the need is there for magically marvellous milk preparers. We’ve come a long way from the novelty of a Nineties cappuccino, and here are a handful of dynamic devices that can move your midmorning mood enhancer to spectacular new heights. For luxury Hotel Chocolat: The Velvetiser – around £100 To many this is the number one product on the market. Not only does Hotel Chocolat’s solid, sturdy milk frothing contraption have the reassuringly heavy feeling of quality, it also mixes with a gentle whirr that speaks luxury and love. Ready-equipped to receive the luxury chocolate brand’s many powdered drink combinations, a rubberised horizontal handle keeps heat away from the hand. And wrapped up in a bounty of style and convenience, it even has a self-cleaning function that will remove milk residue from the inside, ready for your next perfect cuppa. For style Nespresso Aeroccino 4 – around £75 A versatile milk frother now

48

in its fourth generation, the Nespresso Aeroccino excels in its multifunction approach. It can produce two different types of hot foam, hot milk and cold foam – each perfectly prepared and ready to be used in coffee or other milk-based creations and recipes. For status Smeg MFF01 – around £160 If you’re after a kitchen counter milk frother that will bring an air of statement cool to your entertaining space, look no further than the Smeg. Smeg have moved on from traditional white goods and its coffee, tea and milk vessels are an effortless extension, with brand prominence again at the fore. Hot or cold, light or thick, it produces a product that tastes every bit as good as it looks. For budget Lavazza A Modo Mio – around £40 For a respected brand whose

product stands up to scrutiny and still looks good, consider this Lavazza model. The chic black pot can produce hot or cold milk speedily frothed at the press of a button, and while it boasts of its compact size and ability to fit in any kitchen space, it can still process up to 180ml of milk in each load. For manual ProCook – around £20 If you’re of a more traditional slant and prefer to froth milk the manual way, whilst embarking on something of a wrist workout at the same time, the ProCook milk frother is a great choice. In stainless steel it looks great, is well priced, dishwasher proof, and can process a massive 800ml of the white stuff in one go.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how our gardens can move us to a place of peace. While gardens mean different things to all of us, it’s when I venture into these tranquil spaces that I truly get a sense of their calming and healing power, and I find that hugely enriching. Most gardens and landscapes naturally come with a real feeling of gentleness – from the choice of flowers and plants, to gentle sweeps and curves that guide the eye onwards, to a softness and subtlety that may be a world away from some of the physical or emotional struggles we are going through; and I feel it is this dramatic contrast that really transports someone back to a place of comfort, even if just for a little while. What is also really important for me when I visit gardens

at hospices and hospitals, is the reminder that these spaces are not just for those who are residents. They also give hope, clarity, peace and a sense of calm to visiting families and, most importantly, the people who work there. Certainly, with everything that has happened over the past couple of years with Covid, and the realisation that we need to consider and protect workers and staff who look after us, I would like to think those on the frontline can wrestle back their own sense of contentment when soaking up the fresh air and beauty of a garden, where they can move away from a job that’s very hard and emotionally draining. I would like to see more attention given to gardens and outdoor spaces in our health institutions, and in workspaces in general. They are more important than we imagine.

50

Simple sweeps of flowers, plants and foliage are inspiring; the sight of an olive tree can move our minds to far-off places; and we all know how calming a cascade of water can be. It’s all very peaceful and there’s nothing complicated or frenetic. Gardens are evolving, living things that are always changing – in fact they’re much like us in that respect! For me, on those days where I feel everything’s a bit fraught and frantic, and when I just can’t get to grips with anything, I go to sit in the garden or potter about to find myself, and it really works! Life is a compromise, and you can’t always be on top of things, but gardens truly prove to me the healing qualities that exist within nature, and we’re so fortunate to have them.

What if you just leave it? Rewilding Unwrapped The UK’s first photography exhibition exploring the concept of rewilding is being launched this month at Bournemouth University’s Atrium Gallery. Rewilding is taking the UK by storm. The 2019 bestselling book ‘Wilding’ by Isabella Tree has raised public awareness of the idea, as has a storyline on the Archers. Sir David Attenborough is a supporter of rewilding and even Ed Sheeran says that he plans to rewild as much of the UK as he can! Despite the publicity and soundbites, many people are not sure about what rewilding really means, and this exhibition by Dorset photographer and nature conservationist Dr Sam Rose intends to ‘unwrap’ the concept and help people to find out more; and encourage them to get involved themselves. The gallery is hosting a range of more than 40 images, including the animals that are the ‘ecosystem engineers’ and make rewilding happen, the people who choose to rewild, and the landscapes that result from rewilding. It also includes some drone photography of some areas being rewilded, and a range of fine-art black and white images that explore the ‘messiness’ and uncertainty that surrounds rewilding. Sam will also set out a couple of surprise exhibits as part of the display by the end of the week. The work was all undertaken over the last two years as part of a Masters Degree in Photography at the neighbouring Arts University Bournemouth. Case studies were undertaken as far afield as Glenfeshie in Scotland and the Lizard in Cornwall, although there is a a particular focus on the Knepp Wildlands in West Sussex, the subject of the book Wilding, mentioned above.

Rose has a highly unusual gift... his camera becomes an extension of himself revealing landscapes, wildlife and people as if you are inside his head and, that his head is playing host to a wormhole of thousands of years of experiences, rather than simply a question of framing, light and mathematics. He has a painterly eye and you are left with a sense that he is revealing something more than what is immediately visible.” Sam says “I hope that this exhibition will inspire people to find out a bit more about rewilding, what it means and why it is so important for us all. It is all about letting go and allowing nature to take the lead in restoring damaged ecosystems, and about the people who have the courage to do that. It is amazing and beautiful to see what happens when nature is allowed to thrive, and my thanks go to those who have shared their stories with me.” The exhibition is accompanied by a website: whatifyoujustleaveit.info and a podcast also called “What if you just leave it?” available on most podcast platforms. It is gratefully supported in part by Heal Rewilding and the Fine Family Foundation, and created in collaboration with the Arts University Bournemouth and Bournemouth University. It will be on show between Jan 10th and Mar 31st 2022 in Poole House, the main entrance to the University’s Talbot campus.

Tim Smit, founder of the Eden Project and the first person Sam interviewed for this project says: “This exhibition is quite simply marvellous. Sam 52

Sea-faringly fashionable How Tommy Hilfiger continues to sail the seas of fashion. Now past his 70th birthday, it’s hard to recall a time when Tommy Hilfiger’s name wasn’t synonymous with the pinnacle of American fashion. His brand has an instantly distinguishable look of its own – it’s blues, white, reds; precisionpatterning and chic lines that perfectly combine luxury with lifestyle. “I never went to any design school,” Hilfiger begins. “I just started sketching my own concepts, bought the fabric I wanted, and used local seamstresses to produce the clothes that I started selling in stores I had opened up in my hometown of Elmira and at various college campuses. “But my partners and I were spending a lot of time partying at places like Studio 54 instead of looking after our stores. I over-expanded and then had to file for bankruptcy at age 23. That taught me you have to focus just as much on the business side as on the creative aspect if you want to be

successful.” Undeterred, Hilfiger set about building a fashion portfolio motivated by the vibrant world of “pop culture and Americana” he found himself surrounded by. Though Hilfiger remained in tune with the legends of film and cinema that were wowing the world with their fashion choices, the real inspiration for what was to become the bedrock image of the corporation was found a little closer to home. “I had always admired the clothes that my father wore, and I wanted to create a look that was both classic and fresh,” he explains. “I knew what that I wanted to design clothes and create a lifestyle brand that was cool, relaxed, and preppy. “I’ve always loved yachts and sailing, and I had this idea of establishing my brand with the flag that proved to be a very important factor

54

in creating consumer awareness. I also wanted to make clothes that were affordable and wearable and carry a sense of style that people could identify with. “Of course, there’s a lot more competition these days, so it’s important that you need to be able to master every aspect of the business, from the production side to the marketing side. It also takes a lot more money today than when I was looking for investors and business partners in the Seventies.” As for the rewards, well his cherished yacht tours around the French Riviera, the Mediterranean and the Amalfi Coast. He admits success is only worth it if you can invest that reward in something that makes you happy. “You should be able to work hard and come full circle, and that’s what I feel I have done.”

Talbot Village Trust contributes to crucial digital support for young cancer patients Talbot Village Trust has donated £20,000 to Youth Cancer Trust, providing digital support and activities for young people who have been diagnosed with cancer. The funding from Talbot Village Trust has allowed Youth Cancer Trust to provide online weekly group therapy sessions and activity packs, creating peer support while residential stays are on hold. The digital services have enabled young people with cancer to socialise and share their own experiences, helping to reduce a sense of isolation exacerbated by the pandemic. Brenda Clark, Founder of Youth Cancer Trust, said: “We are so very grateful for the grant from Talbot Village Trust, which has enabled us to continue to help young people with cancer remotely during such challenging times. The program has proven to be a huge success, and I want to thank the Trustees for recognising our charity and helping to improve the quality of life for so many young people.” Youth Cancer Trust helps people aged 14-30 across the UK and Ireland, offering free activity-based residential holidays at its house in Bournemouth. Since the start of the pandemic, holidays have been put on hold to protect the highly vulnerable individuals they support. Youth Cancer Trust’s weekly group sessions are hosted with trained therapeutic counsellors, for those who need additional support. The sessions cover weekly topics for the group to discuss, to encourage healthy conversation about cancer and the difficult experiences they may face in their day-to-day lives. 56

Due to the success of their online support project, Youth Cancer Trust has now changed their charity objectives moving forward to continue providing online support post-pandemic. Previously, all services were provided in person through their residential holidays. Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, Chairman of Talbot Village Trust, said: “Youth Cancer Trust has adapted seamlessly to their new online support system and we are delighted that this addition to their services will continue post-pandemic. The difference this has made is immeasurable and we are so pleased to be able to play such a crucial part in changing so many young lives for the better.” For more information about Youth Cancer Trust, please visit: www. youthcancertrust.org To apply for funding from the Talbot Village trust, visit www.talbotvillagetrust. org to submit an online application. The Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in Spring 2022.

STAR GAZING WRITTEN BY KATE EARL

kateearlastro@gmail.com

Welcome to the March Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include the Spring Equinox, a crescent moon between two star clusters, and early morning planet spotting.

International Space Station

Summer Time officially starting on March 27th, this view occurs at the slightly more sociable hour of 6am.

Did you know…

There are 88 constellations in the sky, depicting 42 animals, 29 inanimate objects and 17 humans or mythological characters. The official list was drawn up in 1922 by the International Astronomical Union. Before this date many other star patterns were known, such as Anser the goose, Tarandus the reindeer, and Testudo the turtle, but these are no longer recognized. The areas covered by each constellation are not all equal: Hydra, the water snake is the largest constellation taking up 3.16% of the night sky, whilst the smallest is Crux, also known as the Southern Cross, a beautiful pattern of stars not visible from the UK that takes up a mere 0.17%.

The ISS can be spotted early in the morning until the 11th. Viewing then switches to the evening skies from the 17th. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your observing area.

Events

Venus

The start of longer daylight hours commences on March 20th at the Spring Equinox. This marks the first of two dates (the second being the Autumn Equinox) when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth (equinox comes from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’). The equinoxes are the best time of year to determine the main compass point directions relative to your own home, as the Sun rises due east, sets due west, and is due south at midday. Try remembering these positions relative to a building or a tree.

Mercury

Our smallest planet is incredibly hard to spot during the first few days of March, low in the southeast just before dawn. It is much better placed for viewing next month.

Venus

Venus continues to dazzle as the morning star, rising around 4.45am in the southeast.

Mars

Mars rises a little after Venus, and is the much fainter object to its lower right.

The Hairy Bikers’ DairyFree, Vegan Brownies Introduction Si, from the Hairy Bikers: The baking revolution of the Noughties was really something to behold, and the momentum of that in the years since has never slowed down. As a duo, we always felt we had unfinished baking business ahead of our Bakeation series, not least because being on the road, on motorbikes, does limit your ability to use an oven. Also, I think in some ways, baking can easily get pushed to one side when the necessity is there to get home and cook a meal for your family. Lockdown finally afforded more time to play about with baking ideas and ingredients, and this dairy-free variation on the classic brownie was one of my absolute favourites. These brownies contain no butter and no eggs, and are vegan friendly, and beauties still taste fantastic. Give them a try!

Ingredients

baking paper or brush with cake-release spray.

using the tip of a knife. Don’t mix it up too much!

2. Whisk the milk, oil and vanilla extract together in a bowl and set aside. Mix the ground flax seeds with the hot water and leave to stand for 5 minutes. Whisk all the remaining ingredients, except the chocolate chips and the nut butter, together in a separate bowl.

5. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the brownies have just set. Leave to cool completely, then cut into squares. If you want them extra fudgy, put them in the fridge for several hours. Otherwise transfer to an airtight container.

(serves 8-12)

• 275ml plant-based milk, any sort • 150ml groundnut or walnut oil • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp ground flax seeds • 60ml hot water • 125g plain flour • 125g cocoa powder • ½ tsp baking powder • 100g light soft brown sugar • 75g caster sugar • ½ tsp salt • 150g vegan chocolate chips • 100g nut butter, any sort

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/ Fan 160°C/Gas mark 4. Line a 20x20cm brownie tin with

3. Beat the flax seeds into the wet ingredients, then add the dry mixture and fold in as gently as you can. Add the chocolate chips. 4. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin. Dot spoonfuls of the nut butter all over the batter, then swirl it through,
