Nellie took us out for my sister’s Birthday celebration in May. What a great day that was, even if a little blustery. There is so much to do here on our wonderful South Coast. I don’t know about you, but we have also been creating the garden recently with new flowers and an additional lounger. It is that time of year! News from Westminster Spring has finally sprung – and we may even be seeing the start of summer! April and May have had some extremes of weather, but I hope you all had the chance to enjoy some sunshine over the early May bank holiday weekend. I have had a very varied month, with events and meetings across the constituency and in London. I was delighted to open the new premises for Shands funeral care in Corfe Mullen. They do some great work in the community, and are supportive of a wide range of charities and events, including the Corfe Mullen carnival, coming up on Saturday 9th June. I had a tour around Montecute School and enjoyed a delicious cake & coffee at their fundraising Happy Zone café. This is open to the public serving drinks and cakes on term-time Fridays from 1030-1115. Do drop in if you get the chance and you will be assured of a warm welcome. In Upton I popped in to chat to the volunteers at the Upton Day centre fundraising coffee morning, along with the Upton Gardening Club. I was pleased to chat to Purbeck’s volunteer of the year Martyn Chase whilst I was there. There are so many people giving their time to make our communities a better place to live and work. In London I attended a reception to celebrate the work of apprentices, and had the chance to chat to some local Cobham apprentices from Wimborne. I am always keen to encourage young people in whatever career path they chose, and it was fascinating to hear from them about their work. I have also recently visited local Poole business Actisense to meet members of the Dorset Young Chamber of Commerce from local schools in Dorset. I have had a great deal of correspondence from constituents about some of the debates in parliament recently. One of these was the change in the law increasing the protections for emergency workers. I was pleased to be in Parliament on Friday, to support the
Bill and speak during the debate. My grandfather was a police officer, as was my uncle and we owe emergency service workers a debt of gratitude for the courage, commitment and dedication they demonstrate in carrying out their duties. I was delighted to receive some letters from school children in Wareham about the problem of plastic pollution and our environment. As many of them pointed out, we can all do our bit to help. I always like to hear from young people about issues that matter to them, and it is vital that we continue to protect our beautiful countryside for future generations. Talking about Wildlife...
Helping the birds Many of us will have wanted to help our familiar garden birds by putting up nest boxes for them to use in the spring. We rightly love the sight of the blue tits and robins taking advantage of our help.
But beyond our gardens, out on our beautiful heaths, there are other birds which cannot be helped by putting up nest boxes. This is because their specialist lifestyle involves nesting on the ground amongst the heather and bracken. So, these birds need our help and thoughtfulness in another way. They very much need us to think constantly about not disturbing them as they keep vigil on their eggs or chicks when we go out on the heath. We, or our dogs, only have to stray a very short distance from a path for a rare woodlark or nightjar to be scared off its vulnerable nest - quite possibly causing the bird to fail to breed successfully. A failed year is very significant to such rare birds
which can only breed on this rare habitat which we are so lucky to have around us. This is why it is so important that we stick to the paths and keep our dogs on a lead from March, when the nesting season begins, right through the summer, when it ends. None of us would deliberately destroy the nest of a robin or blue tit, but it is terribly easy to unwittingly destroy the nest of a woodlark or nightjar just by leaving the paths or not keeping our dogs on a lead in the spring and summer. If we follow the ‘heathland code’ in this and other ways, we can both protect the special wildlife of the heath and enjoy its beauty to the full. Wimborne In Bloom Coffee Morning Raises Nearly £480: Judging Dates Announced The Wimborne in Bloom Annual Spring Coffee Morning was held at the home of Anthony and Christine Oliver on Saturday 12th May. It was a bright morning albeit slightly on the cool side. Over 80 people attended and £477 was raised towards this years ‘In Bloom’ Campaign. The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress Cllrs Robin and Mrs Sue Cook and the Mayor Elect Cllr Mrs Kelly Webb attended with the Deputy Mayor drawing the raffle as his last engagement of the year. This year the Town is entered in not only the Regional South and South East in Bloom Competition in the Town Category but is also a finalist in the Britain in Bloom Competition. Judging takes place for the Regional Competition on Thursday 19th July with the Britain in Bloom Judging date still to be confirmed but likely to be Monday 30th July.
Gardens Day which takes place on Midsummers Day, Sunday 24th June when 18 gardens in and around the Town will be open. Leaflets for this event are already in various venues around Town including the Tourist Information Centre.
We have a busy period ahead of us with the summer planting taking place at the end of May and the hanging baskets going up in early June. We hope that we can count once again on everyone’s support to ensure that the Town is looking its very best throughout the summer with an absence of litter, weeds and graffiti. Incidents of property fraud have unfortunately increased in recent years. Here are some practical steps to help you protect yourself and your property. Make sure that your address is up to date at the Land Registry. Most title fraud occurs where the Land Registry does not have a current address for the owner of a property. If you move from your property, perhaps to rent it out, make sure that the Land Registry have up to date contact details for you. This ensures you will receive any notices that are served in respect of the property. It is possible to have more than one address registered and I recommend that clients consider registering a second address – this can even be an email address. Sign up to the Land Registry’s ‘Property Alert Service’ This is a free service and enables you to receive email alerts from the Land Registry whenever certain activity that seems suspicious occurs on your property allowing you to then take action if necessary. To create an account, simply visit https://propertyalert.landregistry.gov.uk.
What is a Settlement Agreement? A Settlement Agreement is an effective, commercial way in which an employer can get an employee to quickly and effectively agree to settle any employment claims that they may have, for a sum of money. This agreement settles most importantly not just contractual and common law claims, but Statutory claims too, which are usually the most costly claim they are likely to have. Settlement Agreements are often used by employers where they are in dispute with an employee and want to settle the matter quickly to avoid costly litigation. They can also be used by employers where they may be undertaking a restructuring, which could result in making some employees redundant. Although these may be legitimate redundancies, a Settlement Agreement ensures the individual cannot bring a claim against the employer.
Register a restriction against the Property. As a further measure, where you will not be living at the property, it is possible to register a restriction against the property, which aims to prevent forgery. It requires that a conveyancer must certify that they are satisfied that the person transferring or mortgaging the property in the future is the same person as the owner. Apply for first registration. Properties that are unregistered are particularly vulnerable, so it is advisable to submit an application for a voluntary first registration. New state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre for Meridien Modena Family-owned motoring business, Meridien Modena, has invested ÂŁ3.5 million in a new 14,000 sq ft, two floor, state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre, based near its showroom in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Located on the Hounsdown Business Park, the Ferrari service centre provides an additional servicing facility enabling the Meridien Modena team to complete restorations, pioneering technical refurbishments, as well as routine scheduled servicing on Ferrari vehicles. Creating seven new jobs including two full-time apprentice technicians from September, Meridien Modena will have
in excess of 40 staff running the centre to ensure exceptional service is delivered to its nationwide customer base. With 13 service bays, scheduled service times will be dramatically reduced from a peak of six weeks to between three and five days. Two service bays will be dedicated to working on classic Ferrari’s which are more than 20 years old as Meridien Modena has officially been recognised by the Italian brand as one of only nine authorised Classiche workshops in the UK. The centre also includes a lounge for clients to relax and view the workshop through floor to ceiling glass. The centre has the capability to accommodate a total of 80 vehicles onsite, including a storage area to house 35 cars on the first floor. It has an array of the latest technology including lever-less tyre fitting equipment, integrated work tool stations delivering technicians with retractable oil, water, compressed air and power on demand to aid workshop efficiency. A large parts carousel system which will enable 3,000 parts to be stored, as well as high voltage special tooling to work on hybrid vehicles.

This revolutionary facility has the newest technology available for customers, so they can rest assured that their car will be in good hands if it requires any work to be carried out or routine maintenance. “A key focal point in the centre of the workshop is a first-floor vehicle lift. The first-floor has 14 storage lifts which allows 35 vehicles to be stored to allow the workshop below to remain free flowing for daily work.” Meridien Modena received the Ferrari Global Aftersales Dealer of the Year Award at the annual Ferrari Dealer Conference, held earlier this year at the Fiorano Circuit in Italy. The judges explained that the Lyndhurst-based dealership had won the award in recognition of ‘hitting and exceeding various targets and for customer satisfaction throughout the year across the service and parts departments.’ Glenn Butt, director at Meridien Modena, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our new service centre to benefit our ever-growing client base. The significant investment in the new centre and its facilities ensures that we meet the exemplary standards expected from the Ferrari brand.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Birthdays! They are a great excuse to let your hair down, have a family gettogether or just simply spoil yourself in luxury for the day. Nellie, being somewhat advanced in years, has had many opportunities to try different ways to celebrate. This was my sister’s Birthday, May 10th. What I had never realised is that my own Birthday, being 22nd December, was always celebrated with family meals and parties to compensate the fact that it was so near Christmas. It was never to be forgotten. Sue’s Birthday however, in the wonderful month of May, had never been celebrated in the same way, except a party she had organised herself for her 40th. So, we were going to change this. Nellie was determined we would get together and do something for Sue we knew she would like. Of course, it had to be a surprise. Gary, Sue’s husband, told Nellie she wanted to go to Swanage on a boat. What a great idea! Mum and Dad (more correctly Dad) had been fishing at Docklow up North, had then travelled

Family birthday trip out on the Solent Scene to friends in Wales, and then made the journey all the way to the South for us all to be together. Dad is 83 and loves adventures… he gets on well with Nellie! Job done. We were all in the same town, so step one complete. It was a blustery day in Poole. Even the waves by the Quay were dancing around in excitement with little ‘white horses’ appearing and disappearing quickly. Nellie was nervous. If it was like that here in the shelter of the Quay, what would it be like out at sea? Mum, Dad, myself and Stephen were all positioned for the grand arrival of the Birthday Girl. Just in the distance we saw Gary and Sue arriving, little people slowly walking towards us. Once they were nearer I could see Sue’s grin. It was nearly as big as Nellie’s but not so silvery. She was happy. Gary however looked a little trepidacious. He was not sure if the boat would be sailing. Oh No! After all that planning would we be foiled by our everchanging English weather? Please no. Off Gary went to the kiosk while we all

29 waited with baited breath. He returned looking somewhat reassured, but not totally content. The boat would sail, but not all the way to Swanage, it would take us on a two-hour tour to Old Harry Rocks and back. We decided to go with it as we were all there and we love the water. Nellie was so glad we did. It was a bit rough, but that’s what we liked. Dad was now grinning from ear to ear and reminiscing about his days on the trawlers that his skipper father used to sail. Mum sat inside with a coffee, also smiling as we were enjoying ourselves so much. Sue did her Titanic impersonation at the very front of the boat and I nearly got soaked with a wave that splashed enthusiastically onto the deck. Soon after this the captain decided to turn around. Health and safety I am sure. Certainly, bouncing up and down on choppy waters is not everybody’s cup of tea, or should I say legs of sea? It was a great trip, well enjoyed. So now what better than to have a late breakfast in one the ‘Mediterranean style’ cafes overlooking the fantastic boats and yachts moored in Poole Harbour? It had to be done. After a delicious brekkie, we walked to the new Poole Pottery shop and had a potter round (forgive the pun…). Mum bought a couple of pressies and I bought some sweets. We had decided to drive to Norden and catch the train to Swanage, so the original plan would be fulfilled. Off we set. There is something magical and enticing about trains which is why I think they attract so much attention from photographers and train spotters. There are many along this train line. Going back in time on an old diesel
Coffee and cake... with a view we arrived in Swanage, having passed the wonderful Corfe Castle enroute. It was now time for coffee and cake of course (I really do not understand why I am putting weight on?) so we sat in a little café right on the front watching the dancing waters of Swanage Bay. Idyllic. It so happens that Sue’s present from the family this year was an amazing 19th Century Victorian locket that she had always wanted. Brian at Georgian Gems in Swanage had got it especially for me. Sue loves it. When I said she could put a photo in it she immediately said she would find one of her rabbit! Gary and I were not amused, although he did say he knows his place. Travelling back we got front seats on the Pullman! Wonderful large windows with fantastic views of the rolling countryside, the stone houses and of course the castle again. We were also presented with a short history of the carriage by the smartly dressed ticket collector. What more could you ask? The whole day was a huge success. So maybe now we can make May 10th a never to be missed excuse to go out and enjoy ourselves? Happy Birthday Sue. Where will Nellie take us next…? By Debbie Corney

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation.

Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.

Keep your sink sparkling... As warmer weather approaches, our location is enviable. Our proximity to the historic beauty of the New Forest and the coast makes living in a hard water area a small price to pay. Nevertheless, it is a nuisance, and the mineral deposits from our water lead to a build-up of limescale that can wreak havoc on our homes, especially our kitchen appliances and sinks. As there is no better time than spring to rejuvenate your home, we would like to offer some advice to help banish this household pest. It can be tempting to use the all-singing-alldancing cleaning products available, and whilst these can leave chrome and stainless-steel gleaming, they can be detrimental in the long run. You’re best sticking to a mild acid, such as white vinegar or lemon juice. Cover the affected areas in either substance and leave to stand for at least one hour before washing away with water and rubbing stains with a sponge. For taps, soak a cloth in lemon juice and wrap it around so the neck stays immersed, then secure one half of the
squeezed lemon to the head (although this isn’t recommended for a plated tap, like gold.) Leave again for about an hour and wash away. If stains persist, you can use baking powder as a nonabrasive alternative to harsher cleaners. Vinegar can also be put through your appliances to treat the hidden, insidious effects of limescale that can affect their performance. Once your sink is back in shape, regular maintenance is key. Clean with warm soapy water and a sponge, then take a few seconds to wipe down your sink and tap after use to prevent stains. Our colleagues over at sink and tap specialist, Franke, also advise against the use of plastic washing up bowls, as these work to dull the surface of your sink over time. If, however, merely looking at your limescale afflicted sink is enough to fill you with dread, we are on hand, and offer a sink changeover service as a cost-effective option for breathing new life into your kitchen. Volunteering for Brendoncare
Brendoncare Clubs is a registered charity dedicated to providing older people with opportunities for social interaction through its friendship and activity clubs in Hampshire and Dorset. The clubs are run by dedicated volunteers and supported by the Brendoncare team. Volunteers play such an integral part in our clubs service - you only have to see the smiles on the faces of club members to understand the significant role that volunteers play in people’s lives. Our volunteers range in age from 16 to 90+ and, in our clubs, provide a range of services from co-ordinating activities and helping generally to more specific roles such as book-keeping. “The volunteers are always lovely and cheerful. It’s a great pleasure to belong to this club – I look forward to it every week!” Club member, Dorset. By giving just a small amount of your time as a volunteer, you can help enrich the lives of local older people. As a volunteer for Brendoncare, you will receive a full induction and basic training as well as the opportunity to join a variety of training sessions. We want you to have fun, make friends and maybe even learn new skills. Most of all, we hope that you will be proud of the fact that you are making a difference to the lives of the older people living near you.
