News from Westminster Every week I receive hundreds of emails from constituents about things they are concerned about. Some are from people who require assistance – whether with the Chid Maintenance Service, housing issues, immigration or schools. Whilst I cannot wave a magic wand, sometimes an intervention from my office can prove to be a catalyst for positive change. Other people get in touch about local issues – from affordable housing to traffic problems, and broadband problems to grass cutting frequency. Some of these can be dealt with by the local councils, and I work closely with local councillors across the constituency. Other people are more focussed on national and international issues. Brexit obviously is the subject of many emails I receive – from both side of the argument. Animal welfare also always features highly, as does the environment. I am often contacted by people about the NHS and I’m really pleased that the government were able to give nurses a pay rise this year, as they provide such an important service. People also have worldwide concerns – with issues such as Rohingya Muslims, persecuted Christians around the world, the Middle East and Syria featuring recently. As the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for International Development, part of my job is to have a deeper understanding of international affairs and to be the “eyes and ears” in Parliament. I do not ask or answer questions in Parliament about International Development, but I am the link between parliament and ministers on this subject. More generally, I respond to all individual emails and letters – and they receive the same level of attention. If you send me a standard text campaign email or postcard, you will be able to see my responses to the most popular campaigns on my website. As well as emails, I like to hear from and speak to constituents in
person. I hold regular surgeries by appointment right across the constituency for people with specific and urgent concerns. To book an appointment please contact my office. Summer wildlife At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start… At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. Over at Chesil, the little tern project is in full swing, with the first egg appearing on 20th May, nestled in the iconic pebbles of Chesil Beach. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars! Stan The Man’s final race raises nearly £9,000 for local hospice A family from Poole have raised nearly £9,000 for Forest Holme Hospice at a recent Banger Racing event at Matchams near Ringwood. The Stanley family, who live on Alder Hills, organised the ‘Pete Stanley – One Last Time Retirement Meeting’ in May to celebrate the end of Dad Pete’s 45 years of racing. The brainchild of 23-year-old daughter, SammyJo, Pete only agreed to the event if they could use it to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice. Sammy-Jo, explains, “Dad isn’t one for enjoying any attention so his initial reaction to the idea of a retirement meeting was just as I expected. However, a couple of weeks later he said, ‘you know that retirement meeting, maybe we could do it but I want it to go to charity.’ Before he had a chance to change his mind, I set about organising a big old meeting full of crashes and handshakes to mark his retirement.” “Through blood, sweat, tears and constant phone calls”, Sammie Jo, continues, “I started to piece together an event which included all Pete’s wishes, from his favourite drivers, to his style of racing and then, of course, picking a charity very close to his heart.” Forest Holme Hospice in Poole provides end-of-life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. The hospice, which needs to raise £850,000 this year, was chosen by the Stanley family as they had provided care, support and counselling when Sammy-Jo’s Nan was ill and when Mum, Linda, had a cancer diagnosis. Sammy-Jo, recalls, “Forest Holme
hospice means a lot to me because it helped at a time when I felt alone and struggled to cope. Their kind staff were there every step of the way supporting me and my family.” Paul Tucker, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said, “Words can’t describe how grateful we are for this incredible donation which will help us to continue enhancing the quality of life for our patients and their families. Sammy-Jo has worked so hard to make this event happen and I’m sure her dad, Pete, is very proud of what she has achieved. Every little detail was thought of, from Forest Holme logos on all the rosettes to regular tannoy announcements at the event promoting the charity.” The all-day event, which attracted thousands of visitors, featured ten races with a total of 104 cars involved, including Pete’s very own ‘Stan The Man’ Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 built with Sammy-Jo. She said, “So for one last time, our workshop booming with laughter and full of people all keen to help, we built the final car my Dad himself will ever race. He’s done a great run, so I think he’s welcome to his retirement!”

Wimborne History Festival celebrates Lottery success to put on Free WW1 Living History Festival Wimborne History Festival is thrilled to announce the success of its recent Heritage Lottery Fund application for this year’s WW1 themed Living History Festival, which will take place in and around Wimborne Minster on the 21 & 22 July 2018.
The lottery application will fund activities to educate a wide audience on World War One and the impact it had on Wimborne. These include a Silent Soldier Project directed by State of Play Arts with a mix of professional and volunteer actors, who will be representing ten East Dorset Soldiers who lost their lives in WW1. The soldiers will be promenading throughout the weekend. QE School will also benefit, with artist-led activities and a Mobile Trench exhibition during early July. The Festival can also now announce that the main Living History activities will take place in the Allenbourn School grounds, following an unsuccessful request to use Willow Walk Community Gardens, managed by Waitrose.
Directors for the Festival released this statement:
“Allenbourn School has recently come to our rescue and has given us full support to hold the event on their school fields. Although not as central as Willow Walk it is a fantastic area for all ages to enjoy our packed programme of WW1 Living History activities, which will include artillery displays, a military encampment, WW1 hospital and recruitment stand, WW1 vehicles and interactive activities including code breaking and spy training with the Royal Signals Museum and a craft tent. The Allenbourn grounds are a short pleasant river walk from the other town centre Festival events and will provide a beautiful festival site.” The Directors are also thrilled to announce that an authentic Bristol Scout Bi-Plane will be centre stage and on display throughout the weekend on Wimborne Square. Visitors can sit in this historic exhibit, the last airworthy plane of its type in the world, and learn about its fascinating history from the crew. On Saturday morning the Farmers Market will be joining in with the war spirit and selling their array of fresh produce. The Minster Green will host Edwardian Home Front displays and workshops with a special WW1 themed Punch and Judy featuring Kaiser Bill. Children can pop

Resident artists will provide an opportunity to take part and help build and paint a WW1 Soldier, there will be genuine artefacts from the War to view and QE students will be displaying their WW1 trench artwork. At 4pm on Sunday 22 July the Minster will be holding a special remembrance service with Silent Soldiers and costumed re-enactors paying tribute to Wimborne at War. A descendant of one of the fallen Soldiers will be present to play the Last Post with a poppy wreath laid made by the community during the festival, all are welcome.

George Augustus Place George Augustus Place was born in Hampreston and in 1838 became a medical officer for Wimborne and Cranborne Union Workhouse. Mr Place was there for five months before resigning on the 6 August. At the time smallpox was spreading in the workhouse due to poor conditions. Also there weren’t many nurses employed there, so smallpox was going undiagnosed and untreated. In 1839 a poster was published about smallpox in the workhouse. Mr Place had contacted The Times newspaper, who criticised the situation in the workhouse.

Garden Party at Wimborne’s Priest’s House Museum A summer Garden Party is being held in the beautiful garden of the Priest’s House Museum, Wimborne Minster on Sunday 15th July from 4pm - 7pm organised by the Friends of Wimborne Library. There will be free refreshments and canapés, plus a free-to-enter raffle and a quiz for those who wish to take part. Entry to the event will be free for the Friends of Wimborne Library and £2 per person for other guests. SPOTTED… FIFA MASCOT IN POOLE & BOURNEMOUTH Children and adults from across Bournemouth and Poole were treated to a surprise visit from the official FIFA World Cup mascot, Zabivaka.

The Russian grey wolf jetted into Dorset last month ahead of the tournament kicking off. He spent the week with Poole’s famous boat builder, Sunseeker, a Tier One sponsor of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
While in Poole, he didn’t miss the opportunity of going out on the water. He was spotted in Poole Harbour on board a Sunseeker yacht taking in the sights of Old Harry Rocks and Brownsea Island.
As part of his visit, Zabivaka met with Sunseeker staff, he opened the Poole Harbour Boat Show alongside the Ocean Brothers and visited several schools meeting with children and teachers to educate them all about the FIFA World Cup and the countries taking part.
Sunseeker’s Marketing Manager, Bryan Jones said: “It has been a brilliant opportunity for Sunseeker to secure Zabivaka so close to the FIFA World Cup kicking off. He had a very busy week while he was here, and we have received fantastic feedback from all who met him.”

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van The isle of Anglesey off the north coast of Wales. Many a good holiday was spent there as a child, so you can only imagine Nellie’s excitement when Stephen’s sister and Dad booked a week there for all of us last month. Driving towards our destination, Nellie was full of nostalgia and fond memories of times gone by. Betws-y-Coed where we met friends years and years ago, Swallow Falls, the low hanging clouds over the mountains, Llyn (Lake) Ogwen and finally we arrived at the shallow tidal waters of the famous Menai Straits which separates Anglesey from the mainland. Nellie danced across the Bridge and there we were on the island. Alan, Stephen’s father is a member of the prestigious “Holiday Property Bond” and we were booked into wonderful cottages overlooking the rolling green golf course at Henllys near Beaumaris, with magnificent views of Snowdonia in the background. Idyllic. Henllys used to be a Franciscan Friary and there is a quiet spot with statues, trees and greenery in commemoration of this. The rest of the magnificent house and grounds now provide stylish Enjoying a “rib-roaring” boat trip to Puffin Island
Nellie enjoys the secluded coves cottages and apartments for those who are investors within the scheme. Nellie was thrilled. Being on a golf course was a great excuse for Stephen to bring out those dusty clubs! It is a while since he has played (must be all that responsibility and hard work he is having to do), so Nellie persuaded him to have a go. Off he went, in a buggy of course, with his uncle David. The were both in complete contentment as they swung those clubs and drove off to find those balls. Uncle David, who does play much more often, shot a birdie (We did explain to Nellie that no birds were hurt in this action…) on hole number 15 and Stephen, well he did not lose ALL of his balls (now now Nellie) and was in fact very happy with his game. Both came back with big smiles and Uncle David unfortunately, also with sore knees. Nellie totally understands! Penmon Point was a favourite of ours in the past. Dad fishing off the rocks, while Mum worried about Sue and I falling on the rocks with waves crashing around us as we ran across to see if Dad had caught anything. The coastline seemed very different this time but maybe it was

29 my imagination? After all, dare I say it is nearly 40 years since we were regularly there! Oh my word how time flies. Puffin Island just off the shore “in those days” was literally that, full of puffins! Now there are around 200 pairs apparently, which is better as they had dwindled down to much less. The good news is that they are on there way up again. Knowing this, we decided to take a boat out to see for ourselves. There are many boats that go out from Beaumaris. We chose a Rib Ride with Seacoast Safaris! Nellie likes excitement and she chose well as Hayden loved it! The young man piloting was very proficient and literally took us for a spin. As a member of RNLI he was well trained and we felt totally safe as he spun the boat in circles before speeding up and chasing the ebbing tide out to Puffin Island. What a thrill! We saw grey seals bobbing up and down, guillemots, kittiwakes, cormorants, razorbills, eider ducks and ONE puffin! The skipper steered us carefully into the cave, smiling while telling us it was a good idea to put our hoods up! Those birds have no manners… It was a great trip and thoroughly recommended if you are ever on Anglesey. Beaches are another must on the island. As a child ‘Me and Dad’ picked winkles
off the rocks at Trearddur Bay and cooked them to eat many a good night. Trearddur Bay had been hit by a bad storm ten years ago and now has a smart new walkway right across the sands. Again, a sign of changing times. Alan and Rachel, Stephen’s dad and sister, love walking and were out each morning by 8am to take in the sites with plenty to see over the 276 square miles that the island occupies. Nellie let us rest, though I think she would have liked to skip along the cliff tops. We did take a walk along the coastal path from Lligwy Beach to Moelfre on a wonderfully sunny day. The ice-cream and coffee were a welcome find at Moelfre before setting off back again to Lligwy beach for a picnic lunch and an afternoon snooze. Nellie likes those! Nellie really enjoyed her stay at Henllys with its full-sized snooker table, huge outdoor chess set, bar billiards, air hockey, table tennis, sauna, steam bath and swimming pool. We certainly were not short of entertainment! The drive home was interesting as you will hear about soon… Anglesey is a wonderful island and if you have never visited there are scores of things to do. Enjoy! By Debbie Corney

GUIDE Runner Beans
It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost. For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well. Push a bean into a small pot of multi purpose compost and keep it moist. Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a
row of crossed canes or even netting for them to grow up. They could even be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel—add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much. Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set. Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!

Rare monkeys arrive at Monkey World after rescue from Lebanon A new species was welcomed to Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre with the arrival of Benny & Nia, a pair of white-throated guenons. White-throated guenons are incredibly rare, native only to small regions of the rainforests in Benin and West Nigeria and do not exist anywhere outside of their native countries, other than Monkey World. The wild population has decreased by 50% over the last 30 years, due to hunting & deforestation and are listed as a species vulnerable to extinction. Dr Alison Cronin, director of Monkey World, travelled to Beirut to work with Animals Lebanon and the Lebanese authorities who confiscated the monkeys that had been smuggled into Lebanon via a passenger flight from Accra, Ghana into Beirut. Lebanese authorities have been cracking down on the illegal wildlife trade and joined CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) in 2013. Despite Lebanon being a relatively new member state, it has already gone some way to protect endangered species smuggled into the country, with animal protection legislation drafted and police enforcing the treaty. Benny & Nia were seized at Beirut airport and handed over to Animals Lebanon to care for until arrangements could be made to move them to Monkey World for specialist care and rehabilitation. The black market trade in primates is a global problem that threatens many different species of monkey and ape. It is a brutal trade where adult animals are shot, and eaten as bushmeat, while youngsters are taken out of the tropical forests they come from often to be smuggled overseas for the illegal pet trade or entertainment industry. It is a bloody and cruel trade that is driving many endangered species to the brink of extinction. Dr Cronin said, “I am pleased that Monkey
World was able to assist the Lebanese government and Animals Lebanon to rescue and rehabilitate these incredibly rare monkeys. Monkey World exists to assist governments around the globe to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. Lebanese authorities are putting a lot of effort into protecting endangered species, and organisations such as Monkey World and Animals Lebanon are here to support their efforts by caring for the refugees of the black market trade. As tragic as their story is, Benny & Nia are the lucky ones that have survived and made it to a safe home. Most die during the hunt or when they are torn away from their families and forest homes to be smuggled across the globe. We cannot give them their natural lives back again, but I am pleased to see that they are enjoying their new home and enclosure and their sad story will hopefully remind people about how important it is to protect endangered species and the habitats which they come from.� The guenons were flown back to Monkey World in Dorset, courtesy of Middle Eastern Airlines, under the care of Dr Cronin, and have been released into a new enclosure. The pair are young and following their harrowing ordeal need to gain weight and get physically fit again but all signs are good that Benny & Nia the white-throated guenons will make a full recovery.

Durlston Court School Sponsor Schools Gardening Competition We are delighted to announce Durlston Court School are sponsoring our our Schools Gardening Competition in the Flower and Gardening Show at this year’s New Forest Show. We are keen to involve the younger generation in all aspects of the Show and to this end, we would like to invite local schools to take part in a gardening competition to be displayed within the Flower & Gardening Marquee in July. The competition involves a class or year group planting up two decorative window box planters with either flowering plants, decorative nonflowering plants, vegetables or salad plants. The plastic containers could also be decorated to add an attractive visual impact to the display. We would also encourage the children to keep a diary of how the planter grows and what actions they have taken, a group photo of the children involved could also be submitted and this would all be displayed alongside the exhibit within the marquee.

Thai Summer Fair
To commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War and to mark 100 years since woman gained the vote, the 2018 Wimborne History Festival will focus on these two periods of history. This year’s festival will be held in the centre of Wimborne Minster and will be free of charge. When? 21st - 22nd July Where? Wimborne
Organised by Bournemouth Thai Language and Culture School this year marks the Thai Summer Fair’s 13th anniversary. The fair will be held at King’s Park, Boscombe, Bournemouth. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can witness a display of Classical Thai dancing and musical performances, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), Fruits carving, traditional Thai massage and activities for children. On offer from the fair’s various stalls will be Thai toys, crafts, clothes and luxurious hand woven Thai silk. There will be plenty of Thai food available too. BARBECUED LAMB RECIPE
As summer approaches, you may find yourself wishing to utilise the outdoor barbecue. This recipe offers you the option to either use this for a BBQ or to cook inside and serve with your choice of vegetables.
Ingredients 1 lemon (juice and zest) 2tbsp soft light brown sugar 125ml olive oil 8tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves (crushed) 4tbsp mint (chopped) 400g half boneless leg of lamb
Equipment: Barbecue or griddle pan Method: To make the marinade mix together the lemon juice and zest with the sugar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and add seasoning. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and then mix in the mint and garlic. Lay the meat in a deep tray. Pour in half the marinade over the top of the meat and turn it over to coat it on both sides. Put the rest of the marinade to one side to use as dressing later. Then, cover with cling film and choose to leave it for 1 hour or alternatively overnight in the fridge. After, remove the lamb from the fridge, shake off any excess marinade back into the tray before inserting a skewer that goes from one corner to the opposite. Do this again with another skewer but in the opposite direction. You can either cook the lamb on a barbecue or a griddle pan and cook on a medium heat. Cook for between 15-20 minutes. Make sure to turn the lamb frequently until pink or cook for longer depending on your preference. Once you have finished, let the lamb rest for 10 minutes and remove the skewers. Serve with your choice of vegetables and pour over the rest of the marinade.
