News from Westminster Over the last few months I have been sending out postal surveys to constituents asking for their views. The survey covers a range of issues, focusing on communications infrastructure, including broadband and mobile reception. I am delighted by the number of responses, with many people taking the time to respond, sometimes in great detail. I will continue to send these out, and I’m considering all the results and using them as evidence in my meetings with service providers and Ministers. One issue that comes up frequently are the concerns people have about housing. There is a need for more housing so that local people have place to live – particularly younger people looking to get on the property ladder. But this must be balanced with protections for our greenbelt, and ensuring that we are not simply covering our beautiful landscape. This is a difficult balance to get right, and I would welcome your thoughts on this subject. But it is especially important for us here in Dorset, where house prices are some of the highest in the country. Crucially, in my view when we build houses it should be to address the needs of our local area first. You can’t discuss homes without considering the issue of homelessness, which is a challenge for every government. I was really pleased to be able to support the Homelessness Reduction Act through Parliament, including sitting on the Bill Committee to ensure that it was the best piece of legislation possible. This law will require earlier intervention by councils to prevent homelessness, becoming the first major piece of homelessness legislation for 15 years. But I believe that actions often speak louder than words, which is why I spent a cold night in late November sleeping outside on a piece of cardboard. I did this with a local youth group, raising awareness of homelessness, and also raising money for the charity Routes to Roots in Poole. Some of their volunteers came to speak to the young people, to explain how we can help, and some of the reasons why people may become homeless. I was particularly pleased that so
many teenagers joined in the event, helping to raise a significant amount of money, whilst also learning from the experts about the different causes of homelessness and what we can do to help. I have also recently visited Waverley house in Wimborne. This is run by BCHA, which is a local specialist housing and support provider, who help homeless and vulnerable people access the right housing, health, learning and work opportunities. I often meet local housing associations, and I hear first-hand from constituents about the issues they have with housing, homelessness and the challenges of finding somewhere to live close to where they work, or where their children are at school. Talking about Wildlife...
Keep Dorset blue... 14 million people tuned into the first episode of Blue Planet II, making it the most watched television show in 2017, enthralling the public with tales from the ‘big blue’ ocean. Marine wildlife is often hard to appreciate as we can’t always see it, but this programme has given us all a new understanding of the complex and beautiful habitats and marine species living beneath the waves. Another much talked about issue it focussed on, was that of marine litter, one of the biggest threats to marine animals. It is estimated that around the world 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed each year as a result of litter. Dorset is home to a great variety of marine life, with regular visits from grey seals, semiresident dolphins and even passing basking sharks, but the amount of litter found in our seas has turned the ocean into a very dangerous place for them. Our seas and beaches are awash with plastic toys, food packaging, lighters, balloons and fishing paraphernalia, which often takes years to decompose. Seabirds for example, might spot something shiny and think its food, which if eaten becomes impacted in
their stomachs and can cause death. Larger marine animals can also risk ingestion and entanglement from litter. The good news is that everyone can make a difference by making a few small changes. Reducing single use plastics is one big step in the right direction. In the recent budget announcements, a tax on takeaway boxes is being considered to reduce the amount of single-use plastic which could end up in the sea. Many of us could start doing something about it now by making different purchasing decisions – for example using a re-fillable water bottle rather than a single-use plastic bottle. Dorset Wildlife Trust has designed its very own refill bottle, available in our online shop at www.dorsetwildifetrust.org. uk/shop. Even if you have just two minutes, take a stroll along the beach and pick up some litter as you go, as part of the #twominutebeachclean. 50 Objects The Priest’s House Museum has identified 50 wonderful objects from its collections. It is now inviting members of the public to sponsor an object to help fund plans to refurbish the museum and revitalise its displays. Here are just a few of those wonderful objects: Elephant from Humpty Dumpty Toy Circus, c. 1910-1920 This wooden, jointed elephant has grey leather ears, white painted tusks and a tail of sisal or hemp cord. The tip of the trunk can be turned to any angle. This figure is part of a wooden toy circus set made by the Schoenhut Toy Company in America. The Humpty Dumpty Circus was first produced in 1903 and quickly grew
to around 37 animals, 29 figures and over 40 different accessories. Tricorn vase, c. 1900 This ceramic vase was made by Fred Fry in the early 1900s. He introduced a huge variety of ‘fancies’ at the Cross Roads Pottery in Verwood. It is believed that the vases were sent to art colleges in London to be handpainted by students. British Railways ACME ‘Thunderer’ whistle, c. 1950s This whistle is made of black bakelite with a metal plate on its side inscribed with the initials ‘BR’. The whistle was used by Ted Henbest, Station Master at Wimborne during the 1950s. Beer bottle label, c. 1920s This paper label was put on bottles of ‘Superior Nourishing Stout’, produced by the Wimborne brewery Charles Ellis & Son. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van January - notorious for looking back… then looking forward to the new year ahead of us. Nellie, our delightful Dorset Publications campervan, loves to see what she achieved in the months gone by and then start to plan for the future. Her purpose as we know, with her rather large thighs, big silvery grin and roaring energy is to create family fun. So where did she take us last year? Well it all started at Monkey World! On a freezing winter morning Nellie had this terrific idea to visit the playful primates in the Purbecks. What a wonderful time we had, though we did not stay all day due to the very low temperatures and flurries of snow. I was doing the driving (“all by my own”, as Hayden used to say when he was very young…) and Nellie’s snow-mode was a great help to say the least! Very brave of me, and Nellie was rather proud. Nellie adopts an Orangutan at Monkey World! community atmosphere. Local Clubs are run by dedicated individuals who spend their own time and money to help local residents have fun. There are many good people on this planet of ours. Wimborne Town Football Club, otherwise known as “The Magpies”, is no exception and Nellie tooted her horn as the Magpies came to a victorious 2-0 win. It was all about history at Stonehenge. Nellie was blown away by that trip. Well actually she was sincerely hoping she wouldn’t be taken away by aliens, or men in long flowing robes. Her imagination ran riot! These henges (prehistoric monuments consisting of a circle of stone or wooden uprights) are well known in the Wiltshire area, drawing visitors from all over the world and are truly inspiring. ‘Us English’ love our ancestry and our historic monuments. Nothing delights us more than looking back in time and imagining how things were. The museum was fascinating too with its ancient skeletons and Neolithic pots. A great day enjoyed by all. Variety is the spice of life and Nellie loves new experiences so fishing with Grandad was a real treat. All packed up with coffee, tea, sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and

27 maggots (for the fish of course!) and off we skipped to Hordle Lakes in the New Forest. Me, Nellie and Grandma were the servants for the day, providing the cuppas, burgers and generally helping wherever needed. The men caught loads of fish, so much so that Nellie learned how to “mug” the fish by literally dropping maggots into their mouths. Not for everyone but Grandad, Hayden and Nellie were all smiles! Our next adventure was unfortunately not with Nellie as she is too fat to fly. Those heavy thighs you know. Disney in Florida was amazing. The new Avatar ride at Animal Kingdom was spectacular and one Nellie would have loved. We really enjoyed showing her all the photos… I am sure she didn’t get fed up of hearing all about it. I bet you have never had that experience? Camping! Nellie loves camping. On our next trip we defied the weather and Nellie took us to Norden Farm near Corfe Castle in the Purbecks. Despite the summers’ torrential rains that had fallen, we enjoyed ourselves, fishing in the small lake, dining out, playing snakes and ladders in the awning, walks around the castle and generally being British. Bacon sandwiches for breakfast, raincoats on and smiles all round. Norden Farm is a great place to stay. More camping in Cornwall with an exciting excursion to Treamble Valley where Hayden competed in the National Surf Life Saving Competition, this time in the Youth Group and much more of a challenge for him. Nellie at Rockley Park!
Nellie learns to fish at Hordle Lakes! held on tight to her skirts as she watched the competitors fighting against the tide and those crashing waves. From Cornwall in the South, to Hull in the North for a family wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies and wedding outfits. She certainly loves to travel. Not long after that was a visit to the Centenary Caravan Club in the New Forest which was a more leisurely end to a rather hectic time. The beautiful English sunshine did us proud and sunbathing was on the menu. Relief. Nellie’s engine purred. After all that running around and exhilaration Nellie persuaded Grandma and Grandad to buy a family caravan on Rockley Park. Nellie is delighted. She can visit, watch Hayden swim in the sea, Grandma and Grandad can stay whenever they want and we can relax on the decking with a cuppa. Result. Nellie ended the year presenting awards to the very talented Horticultural Society winners and then finally she met Father Christmas at the fete! What a wonderful year she has had. Nellie is planning another year of excitement for us. She is getting on a bit now (aren’t we all…) being well over 200,000 km, but is still very young at heart and is determined to enjoy herself despite any aches and pains. Life for Nellie is for living to the full. She would like to wish you a really Happy New Year. May you smile lots in 2018! By Debbie Corney

Ken Dodd By Tim Saunders
“Never live in the past even if it’s cheaper,” quips Sir Ken Dodd, who celebrated his landmark 90th birthday in November. He reveals that he will continue to do two gigs every week and 100 a year. “I used to do 400.” “Always look to the future,” he recommends. “My toenails are 90 but my brain is 21. When you wake up in the morning at 90 you thank God for allowing you to live so long and for giving you such an adventurous life. I’m very grateful.” A self-confessed chatterbox the nonagenarian still introduces his audiences to six new gags per show. “If two or three get a laugh you’re doing very well,” admits Ken, who returns to the stage for the sheer thrill of the experience. “You can never predict an audience. You have to learn to read them very very quickly. There is a lot of creativity in being a comedian.” The king of the one-liners looks forward to doing shows “because I love playing an audience”. “Some men go fishing and some men play snooker, I’m stage struck, I just love doing shows; it’s my life.” Knighted earlier in the year by Prince William at Buckingham Palace has added to Ken’s happiness. “It hasn’t changed me at all - I am the same Ken Dodd that I always was; I still put the same underpants on everyday… well not the same underpants. It is delightful. My family and friends all think it is wonderful. What I am very pleased about is that they have given this recognition to someone from show business; my type of show business; I am a variety entertainer. It really means a variety of skills. I’m here to fly the flag.” Full to bursting with infectious enthusiasm and a zest for life, he says: “I’d like to live to be 190 because there are so many things to see, so many people to meet, so many things I’d like to do and places to visit.”
Another ambition is for a Ken Dodd Archive because with his love for the written word, he adores books. “I get told off; if I buy another book my fine lady threatens that she will have me put away! I must have 100,000 books. I have a house and two little cottages and they’re all full of them. I have a passion for buying books particularly anything to do with show business. Some of which I have read and some that I plan to read and some that I will never read.” As a youngster he was offered a junior reporter’s job at the Liverpool Evening Express but a career in journalism was not as appealing as comedy. Aged 14, Ken was intrigued to discover how a joke was produced. “A joke has a surprise ending; a tag we call it. You are drawn into psychology and you start reading all the books on it by the philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Freud. Now Freud did very well with his jokes. He had a book called Jokes and their Relationship to the Unconscious. Freud came up with this wonderful formula: the acquisition of the psychic economy. Unfortunately, Freud never played Saturday night at the Empire, which makes a big difference believe me! Practically every psychiatrist and every psychologist that drew breath from Freud, Schopenhauer - there’s a whole list - they all have a different theory about why we laugh and it’s a fascinating and obsessive kind of study.” He has lived at Oak House, Knotty Ash (built in 1782) all his life. Passed down from his grandmother, he has enhanced the interior and plans to do the same with the garden.. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

Tastes so good... Bone Broth After the excesses of Christmas and the New Year Cheer, a good dose of bone broth is the perfect antidote. You can make up a hefty batch of this in one go and add it to soups, casseroles or simply drink it from a mug for perfect gut-healing health. This recipe is not your regular stock - it’s packed with minerals and healing properties that will kick start your new year diet.
1. Ingredients 4lbs beef or chicken bones 2. 12 cups water 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 3. 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 4. 3 large carrots, chopped 5. 2 leeks, chopped 3 bay leaves 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon black peppercorns

Preheat oven to 200c and line a baking sheet with foil. Place the bones on the sheet and roast for 40 minutes. Flip them halfway through. Once they’re cooked, break them down and place in a large stockpot. Cover with the water and vinegar and allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Add the chopped vegetables and add to the stockpot. Bring to a rolling boil and then lower to a simmer. For the first 2-3 hours make sure you skim off any foamy layer that develops on the top and discard. For beef bone broth simmer for 48 hours, for chicken 24 hours. Allow to cool slightly and strain. Transfer the broth to an air�ght container and refrigerate for 4-6 hours or overnight. This will allow the fat to rise to the top and solidify. Scrape the fat off the top with a spoon. This will leave you with a gela�nous bone broth when cold. Store in an air�ght mason jar or freeze un�l ready to use then slowly warm the broth over a low heat or drop straight into soups and casseroles.
