Although this year may not be shaping up as many of us may have hoped, Dorset continues to shine as the wonderful county it is. From a village saved from devastation to the UK’s oldest blueberry farm, to celebrate the county, here are another five interesting facts to showcase Dorset at its finest and most interesting. Tragically the soldier, diplomat, archeologist and author died in the county following a motorcycle accident. However Thomas Edward Lawrence’s mark will forever be left on Dorset as Clouds Hill, his idyllic cottage, was his very favourite place to relax. Now taken care of by the National Trust, the cottage is open to the public and remains almost completely untouched since the great man himself left it. Did you know that the Weymouth Royal National Lifeboat Institution has been in existence for more than one hundred and fifty years after it was opened in the latter 1860s? As one of the busiest stations in the country, the need for a lifeboat was realised in the 19th century by the then Earl of Strafford who personally donated funds to be able to build a station. Other lifeboats from nearby Portland had serviced the town’s coast however it was not until the early months of 1869 that Weymouth’s station was to be completed and opened. 8

Dorset is home to the oldest blueberry farm in all of the UK? The Trehane Blueberry Farm dates back to the 1950s following an initiative oﬀering a free handful of seeds to any gardener who was willing to give blueberries a try. Not only was David Trehane willing and able to grow blueberries in Dorset’s soil but he was able to see the potential for a business. Remarkably, as his blueberry farm is an organic pick your own, the blueberries available to harvest today were actually planted as far back as 1965!

Did you know that it was thought that it was in Dorset that the Black Plague first entered the UK? Within months the plague had taken hold of the entire country and decimated whole parishes and manors. It was in the August of 1348 that a ship from France carrying the plague landed in Dorset, bringing with it more than a cargo of fine goods. As infection rates reached unprecedented heights, among the badly impacted areas was the Isle of Portland as well as Poole whose communities suffered considerably.

Arguably one of the prettiest villages in the county and certainly a favourite with Thomas Hardy, Evershot very nearly descended to the ranks of one of Britain's many forgotten settlements. Boasting a history that dates back millenia and has played an interesting role in Dorset’s economic heritage, one day in the late summer of 1865, a ﬁre nearly ravaged all of Evershot after hot ashes were not properly extinguished and quickly engulfed the nearby carpenter’s home. A total of eighteen houses were burnt down and yet, in a ﬁtting way, Evershot’s near destruction also forged a way ahead, with the community rallying around those made homeless.

News from Westminster Great progress is being made in rolling the vaccine out across the UK. At the time of writing, 2.6 million people have had at least their ﬁrst dose, and the number is increasing daily.

In Dorset there are two main ways in which the vaccine is being organised. Most people will be vaccinated through their Primary Care Network – invited by their local GP.

It includes details of where houses might be built in our area, and the council are asking for your views. You can ﬁnd details and links to the consultation on the Dorset website here https://www.dorsetcouncil. gov.uk/planning-buildings-land/planning-policy/ dorset-council-local-plan.aspx . It’s really important that residents take the time to do this, and have their say.

Vaccinations are taking place in a variety of venues, depending on which GP you use. If you live in Purbeck – Wareham, Sandford & Bere Regis, you will be invited to the Wareham hospital. If you are part of The Adam Practice – including Lytchett Matravers, Lytchett Minster & Upton, you will be invited to Poole Port. I’m delighted that the Hamworthy Club are able to host the vaccinations for residents from Broadstone, Merley, Corfe Mullen & Canford Heath. Bearwood residents may be asked to go The Talbot Medical Centre, and people living in Wimborne and Colehill will be asked to the St Leonards hospital site. In addition to these there will be more sites in due course as part of the roll-out of local vaccination services. The Primary Care Trusts have chosen their sites for vaccinations to ensure that as many people as possible can be vaccinated quickly, whilst still keeping people safe and maintaining social distancing. There are hundreds of volunteers who are helping with jobs like marshalling and driving people to the sites, and I would like to thank all of those - both paid and volunteers - who are working incredibly hard to make this possible. It’s really important to remember that there is a priority list for those who will be vaccinated first, and that your GP will contact you. You do not need to call them. In addition, the vaccine is free. Anyone offering it in exchange for money, or asking for bank details could be breaking the law. Talking about Wildlife...

Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as their main advantage is literally their

safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. Go green in style with our guide to creating a beautiful indoor garden in any room. House plants look amazing, adding colour, pattern, texture, interesting forms and a feeling of vibrancy. They can fill a dull corner, provide soft screening and help dampen noise. The Royal Horticultural Society reports that indoor plants have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce fatigue and headache. Intriguingly, patients in hospital rooms containing plants report decreased post-operative pain. The psychological benefits include the satisfaction of nurturing a small seedling to a healthy, mature plant, as well as the pleasure of watering, misting and pruning, while the RHS says that house plants have been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, increase productivity and potentially lengthen attention span. Plants make us feel good. What plants to choose? Select plants suited to homes, where it is shadier and temperature fluctuations are greater than in their normal habitat. Good examples include the spider plant, the Boston fern, several varieties of dracaena, Sansevieria trifasciata, rubber plants (ficus elastica), peace lilies (spathiphyllum), aspidistra and ivy. Succulents and cacti tend to be relatively easy to care for and come in a range of shapes and sizes. For fashion followers, the most-discussed plants on Reddit in 2020 included the pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, hoya and peperomia. On the other hand, the world’s most Instagrammed houseplants include the Swiss cheese plant (monstera deliciosa), fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata), Chinese money plant, snake plant and money tree.

Where to put your house plants Generally plants need good light (but not bright, direct sunlight) and should be away from heat sources, draughts and cold. Darker rooms like bathrooms need shade-tolerant plants. Provide a stable, waterproof base, and keep harmful plants away from children and pets. Huge statement plants look incredible in hallway, living room or dining room corners, or group several plants together for a similar effect. Place smaller plants on tables or use tall planters, or put a row of small plants on a mantelpiece, shelf or window ledge, or dot them among books and vases in a bookcase. Hang them from the ceiling, stage them in steps, or pop them on wall racks. Grouping in odd numbers looks best, and a range of widths and heights looks relaxed. Opt for varying shades of leaf colours or try a more regulated appearance, and contrast leaf shapes for natural variety.

Property Protection Trusts PPTs are by far one of the most common types of trusts included in wills.

survivor to live in their share of the property for life or a specified period of time.

The PPT is designed to take the deceasedâ€™s share in the home and give someone else (usually your spouse) a life interest in the property which will give them the protection of living in the property for the remainder of their lifetime or earlier if the trust specifies i.e. until remarriage. It also ensures that if the survivor requires long term care, at least half the property is preserved for the benefit of their beneficiaries who are normally the deceasedâ€™s children.

So, what is the point of a PPT?

These types of trusts are generally used for married couples or civil partners to ensure the share of the home will ultimately pass to your children at the end of the trust period whilst still ensuring the interests of the surviving spouse are protected. For example, a married couple, who have not been married before want to leave their share of their house to their children. They currently own the house as joint tenants. Dorset and Wight would sever the tenancy on the property registering them each as 50% owners. They then have their wills written to represent that if one died, their half of the property would be held on Trust for the benefit of their children but allowing the 20

SIX IN-CAR TECHNOLOGIES THAT CHANGED THE GAME

Nowadays, drivers have access to a wide variety of technologies that make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable than ever before, and we look at some of the most important of those.

Satellite navigation The advent of in-car satnav systems in the 1990s did away with the need to work out a route before travelling and then using the map on your journey to find your way – which is incredibly distracting.

Airbags Airbags made a huge difference, protecting occupants from serious injuries caused by hitting their head on hard cabin trim. Although they were developed in the 1950s, they didn’t come to Europe until 1980, when the Mercedes S-Class offered them as an option. It wasn’t until the late 1990s before airbags were offered as an option at the very least on the majority of cars.

Automatic air conditioning Ever suffered the discomfort of driving in the height of summer or a restricted view from a steamedup windscreen in a car that doesn’t have air conditioning?

In-car entertainment Providing entertainment while driving has always been a selling point, with early radios replaced by tape decks, CD players, and in modern cars, smartphone connectivity.

Advanced cruise control For some drivers, cruise control – which sees the car maintain a set speed itself – is a controversial subject. Those against it think it allows drivers to concentrate less, while others say it frees brain space to let them concentrate more on their surroundings.

Car-to-smartphone connectivity As well as integrating infotainment systems with smartphones for entertainment purposes, a more recent innovation has seen manufacturers creating apps that let owners control aspects of their car from their phone.

Either way, cruise-control systems have advanced to the point where modern cars are almost considered autonomous. These systems combine different technologies, such as radar-assisted cruise control and lane-keep assist, to maintain a vehicle’s place in traffic without any driver input.

These are particularly popular in electric vehicles, as you can check charging or prime the battery to a good operating temperature before setting off. But other features, such as checking if the car is locked, setting a cabin temperature remotely or checking the car’s location, work for all vehicle types.

Most modern cars now come with Bluetooth, which means drivers can play music and podcasts through their car speakers by hitting play on their phones. The latest advancement is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which provide simplified versions of each operating system to be used in the car.

Some technology that we take for granted today was revolutionary when it was introduced.

That’s why air con is one of the biggest innovations in motoring, making driving comfortable for millions of people. And automatic air con lets you set a cabin temperature that remains constant, a luxury many take for granted in 2020.

Still considered something of a luxury, it’s an option most people choose. The peace of mind it provides is usually worth the extra cost.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van We sneaked out! Well, this was just before the third Lockdown when we were still permitted to go out for a drive. Daichi loves the beach so we decided to go a little further afield and go for a spin. Well not quite a spin, but Daichi certainly was excited. In fact, if you see him in his bright red shorts and surfboard, with his dancing dolphin you will see just how much he loves the beach! A huge smile and an optimistic outlook, that is our Daichi. So, to Weymouth we went. It was a crisp, bright day with a bracing wind that will not beat us Brits. No! We will go out and enjoy ourselves. We will smile whilst clenching our teeth and standing like iced figurines, pretending all is fine and we ARE having a great time. I have to say that wind really was biting and for a split second I nearly turned around and ran back into Daichi’s warm and cosy interior. I resisted and took my life in my own hands. Weymouth, apart from the successful 2012 Olympics, is famous for its sandcastles. This family fun loving activity

Daichi with his bright red shorts! has been popular here for the last 100 years. In truth, Weymouth has possibly the finest sand on earth! Amazing. I learned that a Weymouth sand sculpture would last until the end of time if it was kept in a vibration-proof glass case. Astounding! Not only that but if you make a sandcastle using a liquid chalk base and a powder colour finish, it could last up to two years on the beach… providing a dog did not play with it of course. Daichi had planned a Treasure Trail for us and for this one we had to find the missing mermaid. Seriously? Fictional of course, but it gives a purpose to finding all those clues and discovering new and sometimes hidden features of our history and architecture. George III made Gloucester Lodge, here on the seafront, his summer holiday residence and visited fourteen times between 1789 and 1805. Apparently, he even went into the sea in his bathing machine! Gloucester Street reflects this history with its stone heads, representing the King’s staff, proudly placed at the entrance of the houses. A good clue to

find indeed and one I would never have seen or even known about without these educational and entertaining trails. If you have children that complain about walking, these are a crafty find. This particular trail took us through some of the town and then back onto the Esplanade where in the very near distance, in the bay, were four huge Ocean Liners bobbing up and down. A reminder of the times we are in and the limitations of travel, holidays and restrictions. Not to be beaten Stephen, myself and Hayden marched forth to discover yet more clues and try and recover this poor missing mermaid who must be quite distraught by now. After all we were taking our time, chatting away, photographs galore and had even had a coffee! I would not rely on us if you were in dire straits and in desperate need of being saved! The Jubilee Clock Tower, majestically overlooking the Esplanade, is a celebration of times gone by. It commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Erected in 1888 and it became a Grade II listed monument in 1974. It is such a symbol for Weymouth, you know exactly where you are when you see it. It is interesting that areas often have a monument or building which is quintessentially theirs. A pure representation of exactly where you are on this planet of ours. Landmarks. Stable points of intrigue that speak of earlier times. I wonder what this clock could tell us if it could speak? Walking along the The Jubilee long, splendid Clock Tower

Spot the stone head! stretch of space with the glorious sand and sea, watching dogs running around and walkers smiling at each other, we see that life is good, harmonious and much calmer than any news would have us believe. Greenhill Gardens at the top of the small hill is a stunning place to gaze into the horizon. Glistening sea, a night sky approaching, the moon appearing. We finally got all the clues and found the missing mermaid you will be very glad to hear. She is safe. What is funny is that yet again I guessed the correct answer at the beginning of the trail… from a possibility of 25 places! I really think I should do the lottery… Well, we may have had many troubles this last year and 2021 may not have started as we have wanted it to, but Daichi has hope. He is planning a year of ‘staycations’. Yes, there maybe some delay now, but this will pass and we will all be able to mix together again soon and boy will we appreciate it! Maybe we will leave the computers behind and throw off those shoes and run into the (rather cold) British waters and splash around like never before. Daichi and the Corney family cannot wait! Although autumn is viewed as the best time for planting, trees, shrubs, climbers or herbaceous plants will have enough time to get established if planted now. Plan a shopping trip to fill garden spaces with colour, shape or perfume.

inches wider than the root ball all round, and fork the base and sides of the hole over thoroughly, especially in clay – where you should prepare the soil with a fork, as this causes less compaction of the soil than using a spade.

Start by digging or forking the soil over and removing pernicious weeds or debris. Measure the available spaces so that the chosen plant does not outgrow its new home too quickly, and make a note of how sunny or shaded the spot is.

If the soil is either heavy clay or extremely light and sandy, dig a bigger hole, gradually incorporating more of the ‘natural’ soil into the compost or planting mix as you near the sides of the hole.

There should be a good selection of shrubs to choose from right now that will provide springtime colour – perhaps a flowering currant with flower trusses in red or pink, a star magnolia, Magnolia stellate, with white or palest pink star-shaped flowers, or, if you have space, an amelanchier, great value because they have tiny, very pretty white flowers with foliage in fiery shades come autumn. On acidic soils or in a good-sized pot of ericaceous compost, camellias perform well and their large flowers in reds, pinks, yellows and white look great. There is also Exochorda macrantha, ‘The Bride’, with delightful arching stems studded with tiny white flowers; the list goes on and on.

Before planting, remove the pot and firmly tease out the roots – soaking the root ball in a bucket of water for an hour or two helps if they are quite congested and is essential for the plant to get properly established. Prune out any really large, woody roots encircling the root ball to release the remainder of the roots.

Watering in helps settle the soil around the fine roots, even if it is fairly moist. Finally, stand back and check the stem is upright. “How are you getting on with that new fella of yours?” Linda had just popped round for coffee at her best friend Debbie’s house.

“That’s mine,” Linda blushed and snatched the item from Linda. “I’ll hand wash that, don’t want to send the whole load pink.”

“Great thanks,” Debbie said, stuffing a basketload of dirty laundry into the washing machine. “He’s coming round for a Valentine’s Day takeaway later, so I’d better get this lot washed, dried and pressed.”

“And did you go and visit him in hospital?” Linda asked casually.

“Crikey, he’s not got you doing his washing already?” Linda spluttered. The basket was full of men’s Hawaiian shirts, white chinos and underwear. It all looked brand new and very expensive. “Can’t he do it himself?” “He’s just come out of hospital,” Debbie said. “So I offered to help.” “Why, what’s been wrong with him?” Linda frowned.

“He told me not to. Didn’t want to worry me.” “I’ll bet.” Linda regarded her friend. Debbie had a big heart, and deserved to be happy, but some no-good bloke was taking her for a ride. The doorbell rang and Debbie jumped up to answer it. While she was gone Linda quickly opened the washing machine door, threw in the boob tube and switched the machine on. Let’s see how this charmer liked having all his designer gear turned pink. “Would you look at this!” Debbie returned with a bouquet of red roses. “Aren’t they beautiful?”

“He was having a procedure; I didn’t like to ask.” Debbie mouthed the words, “Men’s business.” “So what’s all this, then?” Linda said, holding up a pair of Bermuda shorts. “He likes his designer labels doesn’t he?”

“Stunning,” Linda remarked as she watched the washing machine quickly fill up with dark pink water.

“The clothes he had in hospital,” Debbie said. “Yes, he likes his fashion, spends a lot of money on it.”

Debbie put the flowers on the draining board and opened a small envelope. “It says ‘Sorry I lied about being in hospital.’”

Linda spotted a pair of Lycra swimming trunks. “Are you telling me he wore those in hospital?”

“I knew it!” Linda slapped the table.

“He said they had the heating turned right up,” Debbie said. “Was like the tropics, he said.” Linda frowned. She suspected that her friend was being taken for a mug. It sounded more like this new boyfriend had been for a week away in the Mediterranean. “And whose is this?” She lifted out a shocking pink boob tube.

Debbie looked up from the card, her eyes sparkling. “It says ‘I have a big surprise for you.’ I have to pack my bags because he’s just bought a villa in Spain and we’re flying out tonight.” She stooped to stop the washing machine. “I’d better change this to a quick wash or it’ll never get done in time.” “Ah yes,” Linda sipped her coffee sheepishly, “about that.”

Object of the Month Orion ‘the Hunter’ is probably the most recognized constellation in the night sky and is best placed to view during the winter months. Look for his distinctive ‘belt’ of three stars, the red giant star Betelgeuse marking his left shoulder, blue giant Rigel as his right foot, whilst Bellatrix and Saiph represent the remaining shoulder and foot (see ﬁgure). Betelgeuse is an enormous star at the end of its life, and if it were to replace our Sun its surface would extend to Jupiter’s orbit. Put another way, if the Sun were the size of a grapefruit, then Betelgeuse would be the size of a large football stadium. Orion also has a ‘sword’, the middle star of which looks like a fuzzy blob. This object is not a star at all, but is in fact the Orion Nebula, a vast cloud of gas and dust incredibly far away, where new stars are being formed. Pleiades

Planets February 2021 is not a great month to view most of the planets as Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury are either hidden by the Sun’s glare, or lie too close to it for safe viewing. Next month’s skies will provide better viewing if you are prepared to rise early! SW View 19 February at 8PM

Mars Mars is still shining brightly in the constellation Aries, and moves into Taurus at the end of the month. Look high in the southwest at 7pm on a clear night and search for a bright, orange-red ‘star’. Three space missions are due to arrive at Mars this month. NASA’s Perseverance Rover will study and collect rocks that may contain traces of life, storing them until they can be sent back to Earth at a later date. The U.A.E Space Agency’s Hope mission will put a probe in orbit around Mars to study the Martian atmosphere, whilst the China National Space Administration has sent both an orbiter and a rover.

Moon This month’s full moon occurs on 27th February, and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Storm, Hunger or Snow Moon. Last month’s Objects of the Month, Taurus the Bull and the Pleiades, make a pretty sight with a quarter Moon and Mars on the 19th (see picture). 42

lthough we live in a light-polluted area, here in the south we have relatively dark skies and are able to see many of the brighter stars and planets without too much trouble. However, if we can wait for our eyes to adapt to the dark, it can be surprising how many more stars we can see. Dark adaption occurs when all sources of light are blocked out, be it streetlights, car headlights, indoor house lights, and even the Moon. It can take the human eye at least 20 minutes to adapt to dark conditions, but the results are well worth it.

Serves 8 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins, plus cooling INGREDIENTS • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g caster sugar • 175g self-raising flour • 3 medium eggs • Grated zest and juice from 1 small orange, plus extra zest to decorate • 75g ground almonds • 125g ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped • Icing sugar, to dust TIP If the top of the cake starts to overbrown before the end of the cooking time, cover loosely with a piece of foil.

Get the kettle on and enjoy a slice of this delicious fruity loaf cake. 1. Preheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas mark 3. Grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin and line the base and two long sides with baking paper. 2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and the orange rind and juice in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined. Toss together the ground almonds and apricots and fold into the mixture. 3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes - 1 hour 10 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar and decorated with the extra orange zest.
