Dear Wimborne, Merley & Colehill residents, What an amazing summer we have had! I had a call from a very caring resident asking me to remind us all to leave water out for the birds as they desperately need it. Good idea, let’s help them. The children are now off school for a few weeks so hopefully they are getting out and about and enjoying time with family and friends. Nellie would say that! Get out there and live life, she would exclaim. On that note the story this month is a tribute to her. We have had 5 fabulous years and unfortunate events have led to what you will read about. We do hope you have enjoyed her exploits each month. We look forward to welcoming Daichi, the Dashing Dude! It is also the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. Currently I have a friend in Poole hospital and I have to say from the ambulance service men and women to the nurses and the doctors they are all incredible. Very special people work to help others and I, on behalf of Dorset Publications, thank them for their true dedication and care. Your little magazine is also full of hard working and helpful trades and service people. They are here for you and they would love to hear your call or see you in person. News from Westminster One of the great things about being a Member of Parliament is the number of different people that I am able to meet. Every week I meet representatives from charities and businesses in Parliament, local residents in the constituency, and young people from schools and colleges. Looking back over the last few months gives a good feel for the range of these different and important issues. In Parliament I have been able to chat to several school groups who have been to visit from Dorset. I have also recently been to visit preschools and schools in Upton, Wareham, Merley & Bearwood and Canford Heath. Sometimes this is to lead an assembly, or possibly be questioned by pupils or chat to the staff about the development of the school. It is always an incredible privilege to get the chance to chat to young people, and find out about the issues that they want to raise with me. Their questions are always direct, challenging and to the point! I have also met with members of the Youth Summit in Parliament, and Dorset apprentices at a Parliamentary event. I was delighted to be able to talk about the importance of Science and Technology education at the opening of the Poole Maritime Festival. In London I was pleased to be able to invite a Dorset head teacher to a reception celebrating our teachers in 10 Downing Street with the Prime Minister. In addition, I have been to meetings with charities and interest groups, including Christian Aid, a group promoting the art of persecuted Yazidi women, social justice groups, and more local groups such as Wimborne War on Waste and the Scouts. I have been to visit the local Citizens’ Advice in Wareham, and opened a new garden at Forest Hill nursing home. Of course, my regular surgeries right across the constituency have continued with surgeries in Wimborne, Wareham and Upton, and street surgeries in Broadstone and Bearwood as well. I am also planning further street surgeries, for example in Canford Heath, for people to be able
to stop and say hello. The summer always provides many opportunities for more informal chats at fetes and events - and thank you to everyone who has stopped me to say hello, and let me know your views about a wide range of views. I was very pleased to have been invited to the Corfe Mullen carnival, the Wimborne folk festival, the Indian Mela in Poole, Morden Village fair, and St Mary’s Church flower festival in Lytchett Matravers, amongst others. Please do continue to invite me to these events, always giving me as much notice as possible! I am very much looking forward to the summer and a break with my family, before volunteering on a Christian Youth camp in August. I will then be working again in the constituency – and so do please look out for me and stop me for a chat! Talking about Wildlife...
Marine Wildlife needs a wave of support At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is Marine Conservation Zones are established under the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) and are crucial to the protection of some of our most rare and threatened marine wildlife. Currently, there are 50 MCZs in the country, with more urgently needed to complete the network of Marine Protected Areas in England. As part of the current MCZ proposals, six out of the 41 proposed sites in the third and final tranche are in Dorset: Albert Field; Purbeck Coast; South of Portland; Southbourne Rough; Studland Bay and West of Wight-Barfleur. These cover a wide range of underwater landscapes and habitats, from deep, tideswept rocky cliffs to sheltered seagrass meadows. Wildlife found in or near these sites include: black bream, spiny seahorses and peacock’s tail seaweed. In 2013, three sites were designated as MCZ’s in Dorset: Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges MCZ, South Dorset MCZ and Poole Rocks MCZ. Together, these areas represent an impressive and stunning range of submarine landscapes and habitats which are often less appreciated and more overlooked than their terrestrial counterparts.

However, the importance of not only the Dorset sites but all of those proposed to be included in the current tranche of MCZ, is huge. Due to the extent of the damage caused to our marine environments, time is now running out to reverse the significant losses already suffered, and increased protection is urgently needed. You can find out more about all 41 sites across England by visiting www. wildlifetrusts.org/mcz, and for more information about the proposal’s Dorset sites, please visit www.dorsetwildlifetrust. org.uk/mczs where you can also become a friend of the MCZ’s and get regular updates and information on the outcome of the public consultation for the third tranche. We’re also pleased to have recently re-opened the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre at Kimmeridge, next to one of the best rockpooling sites in Dorset. The centre has a new artificial rockpool, new information panels, and interactive virtual seabed, a new shop, and lots of events throughout the summer. The story behind the production... Taken from the Charles Dickens Novel, this Musical follows the lives of French and English people, all caught up in the terror and rage that marked the beginning of the French revolution. Two men in love with the same woman. Two cities swept up in revolution. One last chance for a man to redeem his wasted life and change the world. This musical focusses on the love triangle between young beauty Lucie Manette, French aristocrat Charles Darnay and drunken English lawyer, Sydney Carton. Follow the Manette family as they struggle with the wonder and tragedy that

July 2018 marks the opening in London’s Charing Cross Theatre, of Jill Santoriello’s latest production, a musical entitled “IT HAPPENED IN KEY WEST”. The composer/author has been closely involved with our production, and on July 7th some of the company went to meet her and to see her show. to your legal questions
Why is a Lasting Power of Attorney so important? Surely my spouse and children can look after me if I lose capacity? When discussing Lasting Powers of Attorney with clients I am often asked why these are necessary. Many people believe that should they lose capacity later on in life their next of kin can automatically take over the management of their affairs without any documentation in place.
A simple way to avoid this is to put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place. This allows you to choose people that you trust to manage your affairs if you are no longer able to do so yourself. You can make sure that both your finances and your health are looked after by deciding to put both Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Although your spouse has some legal rights over property you own jointly together they can be restricted with what they can do with that property. For example, if you have a home together which is held in joint names, it would require both signatures in order that the property could be sold. If one party has lost capacity and is unable to consent to this then considerable delays could be caused with the transaction. They will not have the ability to deal with any bank accounts etc in your sole name.

The Trust Deed would set out the amount each purchaser contributed to the purchase price; the respective share owned; the contributions to outgoings, costs, insurance, decoration etc.; contributions to mortgage payments and what would happen if one party refuses to pay; agreement on how to value the property on sale; rights of refusal on a resale i.e. one party does not wish to sell or moves out remaining on the title and finally how the property or sale proceeds are to be distributed between the parties.
For varied reasons, (often economic), many people are now purchasing or investing in property, with relatives or friends and not just partners. It is vitally important to discuss at the outset what you all want to get out of the purchase; how this is going to be funded between you; how long you plan to live together or invest and what happens if one of you wants to sell your share of the property in the future or if one party dies. In order to best protect each parties’ legal and beneficial interest in the property it is advisable to hold your interests as ‘Tenants in Common’ either in equal or unequal shares (depending upon the sums contributed by each party). It is also advisable to draw up a ‘Trust Deed’, which would specifically set out how your respective interests in the property are to be held; how said interests would subsequently be dealt with upon any relationship breakdown, re-sale or death of any party.

Other considerations are additional Stamp Duty Land Tax payable upon a purchase where one or more parties already owns a legal or equitable interest in another property either in the UK or abroad and potential Capital Gains Tax or Inheritance Tax implications where property is transferred between parents and children.

George Augustus Place George Augustus Place was born in Hampreston and in 1838 became a medical officer for Wimborne and Cranborne Union Workhouse. Mr Place was there for five months before resigning on the 6 August. At the time smallpox was spreading in the workhouse due to poor conditions. Also there weren’t many nurses employed there, so smallpox was going undiagnosed and untreated. In 1839 a poster was published about smallpox in the workhouse. Mr Place had contacted The Times newspaper, who criticised the situation in the workhouse.

What happens if you don’t have a Power of Attorney? Arranging a Power of Attorney before it’s too late is critical to avoiding heartache for friends and family later. None of us likes to think about a time in life when we’re no longer able to make our own decisions. But should that moment come, it’ll affect every part of your life – from your home to your finances to your medical care. It’s shocking to realise that as many as 1 in 3 over the age of 65 will suffer dementia, but of course, an unexpected accident can strike anytime. So setting up a Power of Attorney is the sensible solution. Garden Party “Quintessentially English!” Even though the Garden Party at the Priest’s House Museum clashed with the World Cup and Wimbledon finals, fifty people attended the party organised by the Friends of Wimborne Library.
The Winton U3A Recorder Group and two young flute students played lilting airs on recorders and flutes in the shade of the garden’s beautiful trees. Tasty canapés and a free raffle were on offer plus a literary game which involved an amble through the grounds - in search of quotes by well known authors! “What a lovely garden party - so quintessentially English!” said one happy lady. “A fabulous afternoon with a lovely atmosphere and music,” said another gentleman.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Many of us have come to enjoy Nellie’s exploits over the years, 5 good years in fact. Playful in her mature fun-loving way, always ready to go somewhere new and have a go. She would laugh at herself with her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs and a silver grin that would bring a smile to everyone’s face. Family fun, excursions, exploring and seeing the bright side of life have been her passion. I did say the journey was interesting at the end of last month, so are you ready? Driving back from Wales… Well, we had literally just passed the “Welcome to England” sign, travelling at a mere 20 miles an hour when there was a sudden bang. We lurched forward. I yelled. We were hit again. The young girl in the car behind Nellie failed to stop, she just kept going. I yelled for a second time. Nellie was badly hit and I knew instantly she would not be repaired. The girl’s car was totally ruined, the engine would not start at all. After the police came to help, Nellie limped to the nearest service station and unfortunately on the back of a truck Nellie was taken to the “old van’s home”. It was very sad. If I say anymore we will all cry, and that is not ‘our Nellie’. No, Nellie is not one to give up easily and she has a Grandson in Japan who is coming over to replace her fun and frolics here on the South Coast. Nellie will be keeping a close eye on him of course because from what I hear ‘Daichi, The Dashing Dude’ as he is known (and for good reason), is a bit of a handful. Despite his Japanese upbringing, he has somewhat of an ‘Italian’ persona and likes the lady cars. Being the personality he is, he is having a ‘makeover’ (can you believe
Nellie with the Cerne Abbas Giant it?) before he arrives here in Dorset. Goodness knows how we will cope, but I am sure we will manage somehow. It was Nellie’s idea and you know what these stubborn older ladies can be like! When we tried to argue we just saw ‘the look’ from those headlights and we decided it was best to let her be right. We are all for an easy life. Daichi, which means ‘first grandson’ in Japanese, is taking his time (there is a lot of makeover going on) and will be with us in a couple of months. In the meantime we will take a look back at Nellie’s Golden Years… It all started in 2013. Stephen’s old car had finally given up and I had this idea to get a campervan to help Stephen not only carry all of out thousands of magazines each month, but also give us some family fun with a good excuse to get out and about. Having a young, very active boy of nine at the time, and being a somewhat ‘older Mum’, having the van meant we could all enjoy a day out. After all, Nellie’s whistling kettle satisfied my more relaxed way of life and the outdoor life let Hayden run around to his heart’s content. Stephen had the

29 best of both worlds. It got both of them off the computer too! As soon as we bought Nellie, she attracted attention. Five years ago there were less van’s like her on our English roads and the dark glass, with her roof up, her long black skirts and her silver smile seemed to draw people in. They were curious. That’s what gave me the idea to characterise her and write about where she took us. It was all a bit of fun and would hopefully make others smile. Her very first trip in June ’13 was to Cerne Abbas to see the naked Giant on the hill. Knowing Nellie now, some may see why that might be, she was always a bit cheeky! One of our favourite trips was to the Isle of Wight. Mum, Dad my sister, her husband and the three of us all went in convoy. Nellie was so excited she got on the earlier ferry and left my sister and brother-in law in ‘Lady J’ standing, waving, on the quay! We all met up again and had a fabulous week exploring the whole island. Fishing for the boys and Liz Earle’s Beauty Salon for us girls. We came out smelling better than the boys did, Nellie will tell you! Another great stay was had at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle. Fields, the wonderful sounds of our English birds, fishing again, fish and chips in Swanage, a picnic by the River at Wareham, what more can you want? Nellie took us to Cornwall last summer where Hayden competed in

Nellie ‘unpacked’ ready for the beach the Surf Life Saving Championships (I did say he was active didn’ t I?) where we got thoroughly rained on and had to buy a new awning. Camping at it’s best…? Following that was a wedding in Hull, so Nellie was packed with wellies, wetsuits and surf boards, next to wedding outfits, dainty shoes and a fascinator! All good fun and just shows how versatile Nellie really was. Ever ready, with a big silvery grin, for any occasion. If you had a favourite story please let us know. Phone, write or email. Dead-heading and Seed collecting
You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying flowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more flowers.

Wimborne In Bloom – Local Art And Poetry Competitions 2018 The Wimborne in Bloom Art and Poetry Competitions have again received many excellent entries from all age groups and were of an exceptionally high standard giving the judges a challenging task in choosing the winners. The theme this year was ‘Wimborne Transport Through the Ages’. Wimborne in Bloom has been delighted with the continued and positive response from local schools. Entries were received from Wimborne First, St John’s, Pamphill, Allenbourn and Queen Elizabeth’s. The Children’s Art Competition attracted over 400 entries. This year a local artist judged the children’s work from Allenbourn and Queen Elizabeth’s. The Town Mayor Councillor Mrs Kelly Webb judged the Primary Schools children’s art. The Mayor commented on what a difficult task it was as there were so many talented young artists. The Adult Art Competition attracted a wide variety of interpretations on the theme with entrants using a range of media. These were
judged by a local artist. The Children’s Poetry Competition attracted over 50 entries and the Adult Poetry Competition was well supported. There were some very entertaining and creative entries. The judges commented that it was a pleasure to read them. Prizes will be presented at the Wimborne in Bloom Annual Prize-giving which will be held at Allenbourn Middle School, East Borough on Saturday 22nd September starting at 2.30 pm. This event will also include the prize presentations for the Wimborne in Bloom Annual Gardens Competition. The Wimborne in Bloom Committee wishes to thank all entrants for the high standard of their work and for supporting these competitions, which, together with the support of sponsors, has made the competitions so successful over the years and continues to confirm the talent of Wimborne’s artists and poets.

Big Ride cyclists brave the heat for Julia’s House A hundred and twenty riders braved sweltering heat to take part in The Big Ride, a new cycling event organised by Julia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire Children’s Hospice.

Previously run as the Hospice-toHospice ride, with a route between the Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen and the Wiltshire hospice in Devizes, this year it changed venue and name in favour of a new circular route starting from Larmer Tree Gardens. Cyclists chose between a 50 and 100 mile ride through beautiful open countryside, villages – and up a couple of killer hills! There were several welcome refreshment stops along the way and at the end of their journey the cyclists were presented with medals and treated to a celebratory hog roast and glass of Prosecco. Last year’s ride raised £63,000 and early signs are that this is likely to be matched. Among those joining the ride was Julia’s House Director of Care Ali Acaster and
Parent Ambassador Charles Andrews along with 10 of his colleagues from engineering firm Meggitt. Charles, whose 14-year-old daughter Katherine receives care from Julia’s House, has had a very active week – he is currently taking part in the charity’s Trek the Alps challenge event. Big thank you to all the Julia’s House volunteers for manning checkpoints, refreshments and road crossings and to sponsors Addo Food Group, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Muc Off, Emily Crisps and Pedals Cycle Centre.

Dorset County Show 2018 An annual show featuring over 450 tradestands and a fantastic array of attractions. The show is still mainly run by farming families and those with an interest in farming, horticulture, food and the countryside. Competitions bring out the best from the area to challenge for the cups, trophies and awards.
Food and Drink are abundant in all corners of the showground, entertainment is laid on and best of all it becomes one big social event for Dorchester and Dorset; nothing really has changed! Family & House History Open Day Organised by the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society. MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
