Councillor’s Column uncertainty – and the displacement of thousands of Afghans. This is a humanitarian disaster that requires us to help in any way we can. I’m, therefore, pleased to conﬁrm that Test Valley Borough Council is providing hands-on support to eight families currently staying in the borough on a short-term basis, whilst plans are made for their futures in the UK. Over the past month or so, I’ve watched in horror, as I’m sure many of you have, at the unfolding situation in Afghanistan. As someone who has never fought in the military, I can only imagine the anger, dismay and sorrow that members of our Armed Forces and their families must be feeling. Especially those who have lost loved ones. I’m sure I speak for everyone who lives in Test Valley though, in saying that we are extraordinarily grateful to all those who have served for keeping us safe over the last 20-years. After all, no successful terrorist attack against the west has been mounted from Afghan soil since 9/11. Like many of you though, I’m fearful for what happens now. I know some will say that we shouldn’t be the world’s policemen and I have some sympathy with that view. But I can’t help feeling that the world is a lot less safe today than it was last month. It’s also pretty alarming that this NATO mission – which in recent years actually involved a relatively small number of troops supporting the Afghan Army – has been allowed to come to an end, primarily on the say-so of one man in the Oval Oﬃce. Patient achievement and stability having been given away to evil and 6

Helping them with food, clothes, medical appointments and other needs. Whilst the council is grateful for donations that have recently been made via the Unity collection point, Test Valley is not currently seeking any further items. Despite the harrowing stories we’ve heard from families that are currently being looked after in our borough, the situation these refugees have been in is something none of us can truly begin to comprehend. I’m, therefore, proud that Test Valley is pulling out all the stops to support them. It’s my sincere hope that with all of our help they can feel safe and begin to look forward to a better future.

TILE TRENDS IN THE BATHROOM THIS SEASON Summer has passed and Autumn is upon us so it’s time to hunker down and update your home in time for Winter. It’s important to find the right design, colour and material for your bathroom tiles and with this in mind, Senior Designer Kerri Asker from bathroom design specialists Ripples has provided her insight into the latest tiles trends for the upcoming season. 1. Think pink - Pink is the perfect accent shade as it complements an array of other colours and adds a sense of fun to your scheme. Clay hues are a popular base colour for neutral bathrooms as its warming characteristics create a welcoming atmosphere, pairing well with black, grey and white. Blush pink tiles exploded onto the interiors scene a few years ago and continue to be a firm favourite amongst style lovers. Whatever shape you go for; metro, mosaic or hexagon, pink tiles will be a winning look for years to come. 2. Wood effect - Imagine that slice of zen experienced in a relaxing bathroom in Bali featuring natural textures and a relaxing spa bath. Recreate the same look in your own home with wood-effect tiles paired with muted lighting and earthy neutrals. Wood effect tiles are so versatile when it comes to layout; horizontal, vertical, parquet - you can’t go wrong. Opting for a porcelain tile will make your life easier as they are highly resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture...perfect for creating your very own ‘spathroom!’ 3. Hexagon happy - We’ve been in love with hexagon tiles for a while now but over the last few months we’ve noticed an array of exciting new colours appearing so you can have fun and be bold with this geometric tile choice. Why not impress your guests with a stand-out splashback in your cloakroom or mix and match patterns to create a striking

colour clash in your family bathroom. For a more subtle way of embracing the trend, choose a white or grey hexagon tile and add interest by positioning the tiles in an asymmetric layout. 4. Marvellous marble - This timeless material is seeing a huge resurgence in bathroom design, being used to create a sleek hotel-inspired look within the home. Grey marble is a classic choice, whilst warmer-toned veining is growing in popularity as it helps balance this typically cool material. If you don’t opt for the real thing, you can achieve the look and feel of marble with stunning porcelain and ceramic alternatives. Pair with special finish brassware in brushed brass or gold to create a luxe look. 5. Embracing nature - We’re seeing a huge trend for tiles inspired by nature, from dainty ditsy prints to bold botanicals and everything in-between. Tropical prints work wonderfully in cloakrooms as they are a fun talking point for any visiting guests. Opt for larger formats for your nature-inspired tiles as they not only look beautiful but also reduce grout lines making for easier cleaning and maintenance.

National award for council pledge to Armed Forces community

A pledge by Test Valley Borough Council to oﬀer further support to military personnel, their families and veterans in the borough has received a national award. Earlier this year, TVBC boosted its support for the armed forces through the council’s Armed Forces Community Covenant. Now, that covenant, and the dedications it includes, has been given a bronze award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. In December 2019, the council’s scrutiny committee requested a review of the authority’s commitment to the Armed Forces Community Covenant. They set up a dedicated panel to undertake the work, led by the council’s Armed Forces champion, councillor Nick Matthews. Having revisited challenges faced by Armed Forces personnel and their families, they looked at what TVBC had already put in place and found that, although the council was meeting its promises, there were opportunities for further improvement. They included enhancing communication with partner organisations, and leading on a more inclusive approach to supporting the Armed Forces community. Armed Forces champion, councillor Nick Matthews, said: "I am both thrilled and indeed honoured that TVBC have been recognised with this award. 12

We have a large military footprint within Test Valley, and not only do we house more than 1,000 service families, we have a huge veterans community who have settled in the area after their service. “Our comprehensive covenant review determined that TVBC was fulﬁlling its obligations to our military and veterans, but also identiﬁed areas that can be improved and introduced, including the forming of the new Civilian and Military Forum (CMF) and a dedicated military webpage created on our website. We will not sit still and our new CMF team continue to work hard in improving services and support for our important military and veteran communities. Our next milestone – silver!”

Big Ben Ben Fogle has made a name for himself across a variety of pursuits, though after a couple of years away from the cut and thrust of extreme adventure, the presenter, explorer and activist is summoning up the courage for a new challenge. From Ben Fogle’s TV breakthrough on the BBC reality show Castaway 2000 – which saw him marooned on a remote Scottish island with 36 other people for a year – to competing in the six-day, 160-mile Marathon des Sables, to racing across the Antarctic Plateau to the South Pole, to ascending Mount Everest, Ben Fogle has never shied away from a challenge. Despite living in London for most of his life, Fogle’s passion for the great outdoors has merged with a natural talent for broadcasting to present the 47-year-old with some true lifechanging experiences. “I love one-off experiences; challenges that take me to mental and physical extremes, and that element of danger where you are pushing yourself to the edge,” he begins. Asked to name the most

demanding, and Fogle will always point to those experiences at sea. “It is just an alien environment. At any time, the end is right beneath you and around you,” he says. “We are not designed as water creatures, so from kayaking to paddleboarding, long-distance swimming and rowing, it’s all a step into a world that isn’t designed for us, but that’s what becomes the great thrill.”

Fogle has a wholly modest assessment of his nautical feats, one that fails to take into account the greatest of his achievements on water. That came between 2005 and 2006 when he competed in the Atlantic Rowing Race alongside former British Olympic rower and long-time friend James Cracknell. “The solitude is something I will always remember from that experience, being out on the high seas,” says Fogle. “I’ve always loved boats and have spent quite a bit of time on them over the years, but never like this of course. Two guys on their own in a small 20ft vessel with no support around them is pretty terrifying, especially when you capsize!” Switching back to terra ﬁrma in TV series such as New Lives in the Wild, Storm City, Animal Clinic and Countrywise, as well as writing a series of travel, ﬁction and children’s books, Fogle has enjoyed the relative calm of home. “Life is never dull, but I know I’ll always head back to the oceans,” he says. “They have a spirit all of their own and it’s the passion that draws us back. I love that feeling, so watch this space, I suppose!”

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect discusses sustainability and regeneration in our villages, towns and cities. Right now there’s a whole band of architects who are really trying to evolve a style of architecture that combines futuristic with traditional – both ends of the spectrum. What we’re talking about here is incorporating natural materials with contemporary, so you get an airtight insulated building. I am a huge advocate of eco buildings, and I think what a lot of people produce – and we have seen many over the years on Grand Designs – are incredible, intelligent, responsible; but you also have to approach the subject with realism. It may look great on the telly, yet as architects and housebuilders we’ve got to be prepared to admit the very extreme eco/traditional wooden, single grass-roofed, claywalled approach to building

still represents the minority of those constructed! I suppose the danger is that we side-line that activity and consider it irrelevant, whereas it’s actually a very important approach. It demonstrates an interest not just in tradition, but in low impact construction. We all like bling and the government are going to carry on commissioning those big glass towers, but I like to think there will be greater learning and crossovers between disciplines.

We should really be examining how we revitalise our cities on our terms how we make them viable and sustainable, how we introduce food-growing into cities and towns, how we stimulate creative hubs and leisure facilities. Once you have that energy coming out of local communities it’s the driver for proper regeneration – that’s how towns like Bruton and Frome regenerated, thanks to one or two individuals making a claim.

What’s interesting is that proper innovation, regeneration and improvement rarely comes from the top down. Think of the strategies that local authorities put together, and they’re all quite generalist… ‘this is going to be a work area, here’s the bus route, and the houses

We need more ways of stimulating not just these local areas and communities, but the way we build those facilities too; we need to encourage people to take the power back, because authorities rarely seem to be able to make progressive decisions themselves.

As one of the county’s most recognisable local breeds, the Hampshire Down Sheep has been part of the landscape for generations. In fact, did you know that 2021 marks 160 years since the Hampshire Down Sheep was recognised as its own breed? Today the Hampshire Down Sheep Breeders Association works hard to unite members and preserve this heritage breed.

Did you know?

Interestingly the village of Barton Stacey is among the oldest in the county with origins dating back to Neolithic times. For a period of time, the settlement was a royal manor and came under the ownership of Edward the Confessor. As time went on the village was largely a farming community however despite all those years of history, the settlement very nearly came to an abrupt end when a stray spark nearly burnt out the entire area. The blacksmith’s ﬁre caused a spark which soon ignited the nearby cottage. Countless houses and belongings were lost however the county and indeed the country were quick to provide relief and monies were raised by strangers from across Britain. Thankfully today the village is still standing despite the ﬁre which threatened its existence. 22

Did you know that Hampshire is home to one of the most unusual Special Sites of Scientiﬁc Interest? Greywell Tunnel is a disused man-made canal tunnel, built as early as the 1780s? Through disuse and a resulting lack of maintenance and traﬃc, the tunnel has been naturally repurposed by local populations of bats! Many bats come to the tunnel to hibernate and remarkably, the tunnel is home to the second largest colony of Natterer's bats in Europe.

Perhaps an usual gift to bestow upon your nearest and dearest, did you know that East Tytherley was given to Queen Philippa by her husband King Edward III in the 14th century? Interestingly, as the Queen ﬂed the Black Death in London, her entire court moved to the simple Hampshire village, no doubt causing quite the stir. The Queen was said to have loved the settlement however, as she relocated her court, she brought with her the Black Death and caused devastation in East Tytherley as a tragic result.

Have you seen arguably Hampshire’s most impressive, if not unusual, folly? Although follies are, by nature, unusual or quirky, surely Massey’s Folly is one of the foremost examples of such a structure, so much so that the creator of the folly himself was not exactly sure of its purpose! Complete with 17 bedrooms and even two towers, the folly took more than 30 years for local rector Thomas Massey and just one other worker, a bricklayer, to ﬁnish. Remarkably, as Massey was so unsure of his plans, he repeated tore down elements of the folly until it was eventually fully constructed!

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van It has been said that happiness is a journey and not a destination. Well, I have to say that I am never happier than when Daichi is loaded up, and we begin our next adventure. That moment when we take our seats, buckle up, and say, “Ok, what we have forgotten we can either do without, or we will buy when we get there.” Enough is enough, let’s get going! My ‘story’ this month is all about the journey, the route to and from our destination. This time we went all the way up to Hull to collect my parents, to take my Dad fishing at Docklow Pools again, one of Dad’s favourite fishing haunts. Mum has dementia, which is very sad and not always easy to live with. Dad needs a break and what better than to take them away, get Mum some fresh air and give Dad some time to catch a few fish. His life-long passion. The journey there took us over the Humber Bridge! I remember the building of this magnificent, single span construction when I was a girl. It was so exciting to see the massive layers of concrete starting to crawl, step by step, across the waters. I remember looking at it with awe, wondering how on earth it could stay up in the air like that. To me it was magical. You can see that I am no engineer… The Bridge opened in June 1981 and at the time it was the longest

Grandad and his passion! single span Bridge in the world! It was not until 1998 that a Japanese Bridge literally overtook it and now, 40 years later, it is the eleventh longest bridge of its type on this planet. I love driving over it and viewing the enormous River Humber with its brown murky waters flowing below. To be honest, I don’t think this Bridge has ever really achieved the accolade it deserves. Arriving in Hull is always a trip down memory lane for me and Daichi likes to skip his way there. Sometimes it is good to look back at ones’ roots, with a bit of nostalgia. After a good night’s sleep, we travelled over the Bridge again to see family who have moved over to East Halton in North Lincolnshire. Houses are so much cheaper here! It is so good to catch up, isn’t it. Long lost cousins, aunts, aunts’ children’s children, in fact five generations in all! The weather was warm, there was a beautiful garden and with a glass of wine in hand and a good old chat, what more can we want! Oh yes, we had quite a laugh too. Daichi was part of the family and he loved it. His shiny white grin said it all. Docklow was a great success too. The lakes there

Next stop was Crickley Hill nestled in the Cotswolds overlooking the Severn Vale with incredible views to the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, including Robinswood Hill and May Hill. Just off the A417 in Gloucester, near Birdlip, this was a great find on a previous trip when I was hungry. It is glorious! The views are simply stunning. You can see for miles and gaze at the wonder of our beautiful countryside with a coffee and cake in hand. Owned by the National Trust as well as the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, it is a haven for birds, plants, insects and wildlife. The walks around this area are just spectacular. My Mum and Dad, who were travelling home with us, were amazed

View from Crickley Hill at what they saw and thoroughly enjoyed our scenic stop. Back on the road we travelled further South with our final stop at Avebury. Now in the county of Wiltshire with a Neolithic henge monument containing three huge stone circles. We had arrived in prehistoric Britain and a little further back in time, than my memories in Hull - Though getting out of bed in the mornings, it sometimes doesn’t feel so! Stones weighing around 40 tons still standing, majestically, thousands of years later. How incredible and inspiring is that? For contemporary Pagans this is a site of religious importance. What a fascinating place we live in. England is full of delights, sights, nature and indeed family. Daichi allowed us to do so much in just a week. It was a long round trip from Dorset to East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, to Herefordshire, back through Gloucestershire, into Wilshire and finally back to Dorset, with a stop in each place. The happiness was certainly in the journey. It was spent with family, making it all the more special. Despite the challenges of dementia and ‘old age’ Daichi helped us create a journey packed with good times. Daichi does hope that when you travel you take time to visit along the route. It extends the holiday and adds to all those wonderful memories of times spent together. Where will Daichi take us next I wonder…? By Debbie Corney

Lost Wills: What to do if the original will cannot be found Personal representatives tasked with dealing with a deceased person’s affairs are often faced with a number of challenges, both legal and practical. Sometimes these challenges can be complex and involve dealing with contested wills. Often, however, the challenge arises simply because the deceased’s original will cannot be found but, rather, only a copy. In those circumstances, given the duties of executors, the position must always be considered very carefully. The starting point is that it will never be sufficient simply to submit a copy will with an application for probate. On its own, this will not be accepted by the probate registry. However, locating a deceased’s original will is not always straightforward, particularly if the will was made a long time prior to death or if the deceased was particularly private with their personal affairs. It is important, therefore, that the personal representatives conduct a thorough search to try and locate the original will, including searching at local solicitors (particularly any that dealt with the deceased during lifetime) and potentially at national will registration companies (although note that these are not compulsory and that this cannot therefore be treated as exhaustive). If the original will cannot be found, then steps should be taken to identify who was responsible for storing it and where the will can last be traced to. Was it stored with the firm of solicitors who

prepared it? Was it kept by the deceased themselves? Did the deceased give it to their personal representative, a friend or family member to retain? However, sometimes, despite best endeavours, the original will cannot be found. So, what should personal representatives do if faced with a lost will? In some circumstances, an application to admit a copy will or, even, the terms of a will recounted in the form of witness or affidavit evidence, can be made to the probate registry. Losing someone close to you is devasting when also facing the challenges of dealing with their estate. Thus, it is important when making a will to keep a record at home as to the whereabouts of the original document. Locating the original will removes some of the stress and anxiety during a very difficult time. We are here to assist you with these matters with our experience, patience and understanding. A Day in the Life of a Dispensing Optician... As a Dispensing Optician I am often faced with a new patient for whom I have no history but a complex set of facts that need unpicking to be able to give the best advice. The case study below is quite typical. Mrs Jones is a 79-year-old retired dance teacher who lives alone in a 3-story town house, with minimal support from family and friends. She is extremely active and attends dance classes twice a week. The patient attends the practice having purchased new spectacles, it was noted that she presented with abrasions and contusions to her forearms. While conversing, the dispensing optician uncovered that these were caused by a recent fall down a flight of stairs. Mrs Pigott admits to not knowing how this happened and explained that she never has any issues with mobility. Well controlled hypertension Medical History: Ocular History: Bilateral cataract surgery– 2008 Bilateral YAG capsulotomy – 2013 ( laser treatment to make opening in lens capsule/membrane for clearer vision) The patient is wearing 38mm round segment bifocals in her glasses and her corrected vision standard is slightly less than perfect.

Considerations

As a regular attendee of dance classes patient should have good muscle tone. Has she fallen before or experienced episodes of loss of awareness? Is her hypertension still controlled? When was it last reviewed and has she recently changed medication?

How long has she had the new spectacles? Has she worn this particular type of bifocal before? Round segment bifocals cause a jump in the image seen by the patient when they look down in the lens. Could this be a contributory factor? Calculate the precise amount of image jump using Prentice’s Law. Prismatic effect = Focal power in Dioptres x Centration in (cm) For a patient regularly climbing 3 flights of stairs Round segment bifocals are not the best solution. Discuss why and other possible solutions such as separate pairs, No jump bifocals etc. Is the slight reduction in corrected vision normal for this patient or not? Has the patient had a recent eye examination, which would have picked up changes within the eye and led to referral for specialist advice? Or have the spectacles been made to an older prescription? Is the lighting in the patients house effective enough as her vision is slightly down? Give advice on ambient lighting. Does she have handrails on the stairs? Does this patient have a good support network helping her maintain her independence or does minimal support from family and friends mean she is isolated? The answers to all these enquiries help to inform the advice given to the patient and demonstrate that the relationship between the patient and the Dispensing Optician is about more than just the provision of glasses.

Remember, remember the 5th of November by John Chitty BVetMed of Anton Vets Firework season is approaching so it is important that we know how to help our pets cope with the firework invasion. How do I know if my pet has a firework fear? With some pets it will be obvious however others are more discrete, some common signs of fear include • Shaking, shivering or trembling • Barking, whining, crying or howling • Hiding behind or under things Going to the toilet unexpectedly or in unexpected places • Restlessness salivating or panting excessively What can I do to help my pet cope on the night? The best thing you can do is have a night at home in front of the TV with your pet. The TV will reduce the sound of the fireworks and if you are calm and relaxed your pet will be too. Close the curtains or blinds to limit the bright lights created by the fireworks. Behave as normally as you can, do not attempt to reassure your pet and ignore any strange behaviour however irritating it may be. This may seem illogical, but by attempting to reassure your pet or correct unwanted behaviour you are reinforcing the message that all is not well, so it’s time to panic! Ensure your pet is indoors for the night and exercise dogs before it gets dark. How can I prepare for fireworks? There are some feel good products which can help to relax your pet, Adaptil This is for dogs and comes in a collar, spray or diffuser. It works by mimicking the pheromone a mother releases when

she is feeding her puppies. Therefore reminding the dog of a time when it felt relaxed and protected. This would need to be started at least a week before the event. Feliway This is the cat version of Adaptil and it comes as a spray or diffuser. If you watch a cat in its house it will rub its cheeks against household items. As they do this they mark the items as their home and indicates a safe and secure place by leaving a facial pheromone behind. Feliway is a copy of this pheromone therefore making the cat feel like it is in a safe secure environment. Like with Adaptil this needs to be started at least a week before the event. What can I do if my pet is still fearful? All is not lost! There are a number of supplements and medications which can also help you pet. If you contact your vets they will be able to advise you on what would work best for you and your pet. How can I be prepared for next year? There is a CD available called "sounds scary" it has a number of sounds pets can become scared of one of which is a firework. It allows your pet to get used to the sounds in a controlled environment. The CD comes with a booklet which tells you how best to use it. This kind of treatment needs to be started several months before the event in order to be effective.

Butternut Squash and Chorizo

Introduction

As autumn draws in, the tastes and ﬂavours that pattern our diets begin to change. We don’t necessarily require nor crave the lightness of the summer, with salads gradually giving way to meat and carb-inﬂuenced dishes. With that in mind, using the light, sugariness of a butternut squash, yet gently layering in meaty protein that can guide us towards the winter months, is a great way to embrace the season. What’s more, the versatility of the dish means it can be cooked for breakfast by leaving out the gnocchi, as a medium lunch, or combined with bread for an evening meal. Oh… and it tastes fantastic!

Method

Ingredients (serves four) 1 tsp of olive oil 300g chorizo 450g butternut squash 1 onion 500g gnocchi

Top Tips

• This is a ﬂavour-driven plate that intends to combine sweet with spicy. Don’t be afraid to experiment further, adding sourness (in the form of lime), tomato ﬂavours (which will also add moisture), and generous proportions of salt and pepper too. Let your tastebuds run away with you! • Be careful not to overcook your chorizo. Remember, considering it’s a food that can be eaten cold, it really doesn’t need much cooking at all, so lean on the side of undercooking. If you fry it for too long, it will become tough and unpalatable.

1. Warm the oil on a medium heat and add the choppedup chorizo. Cook for around 5mins until it’s browned, and the oil begins to seep out, but turn down the heat when this happens so you retain moisture in the meat. Remove and keep to one side. 2. Now combine chopped butternut squash and onion, cooking over medium heat with

an addition of oil, if needed. Stir until golden brown and tender, for 10-15mins. 3. Add your gnocchi to a pan of boiling water and cook for four minutes. Then drain. 4. Stir in the chorizo with the butternut squash and onion, and season with salt, pepper and lime, then serve with the gnocchi.

Tip This plate has an intensely Spanish ‘small plates’ feel, but you can add green vegetables to it to create a more balanced dish, north European twist, should you wish.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, as the nights draw in, Alan Titchmarsh explains how our gardens can still be a place of light, stimulation and decoration, and why now is the time to plan for brighter months ahead. There is a saying: ‘gardeners learn to grow the things that want to grow’. In fact, the truth is everything wants to grow, it’s just up to us not to get in the way of that! A big part of growing is preparation, and the best time to start planning for next year is right now; so really have a good look around your garden, do some research, and revel in the excitement of what it will look like in six months’ time. The ﬁrst things to consider are sunshine and shade; ﬁnd out your plot’s capabilities and then you’ll know how you can grow all kind of things, be they in the soil, or in tubs, pots and troughs. Consider size as well – do you have a ranging outdoor space or are you more limited? In

reality, it doesn’t matter – just because a space is small it doesn’t mean it’s hard to ﬁnd things to grow in it. It’s easy to grow salads in a small space, tomatoes in summer, even

dwarf fruit in large pots. No, you won’t be self-sufﬁcient, but you know that you grew it. So being realistic about what’s in front of you, and making the best of it, is crucial. The same goes for when the evenings begin to get darker so much earlier. Plants begin to wither, ﬂowerful gardens sink into greens and browns, and there’s a feeling of packing up for winter, waiting for the spring for colours to begin to return.

One very obvious way to extend the days in your garden in autumn/winter is to add some subtle lighting. I don’t have much lighting in my garden but I try to use what I have to maximum effect. There are some up the sides of a path, and others that highlight things - I’ve got a tall hedge with urns in front with a couple of lights in them, and they look wonderful. They go on in the evening for a couple of hours and then switch off at 10. I loved looking at those urns – it’s not over the top but it keeps the garden alive and to be enjoyed at night. Dare I say it, it’s almost romantic, which is very ‘me’ of course!
