It seems like almost no time at all has passed since Hampshire’s countryside was last scattered with the carpet of colours from the autumnal leaves. Although this might well prove to be one of the strangest autumns in history, Hampshire has had plenty of interesting chapters of its own in its tapestry of heritage. From an interesting piece of farming equipment to a vital role in the war effort, here are some more fascinating facts from around the county.

It is not a secret that Hampshire played an important role in World War II, interestingly however, Lepe Beach near Southampton, was especially vital to the war effort as it was used to build essential concrete caissons to form part of the portable Mulberry harbours which was a clever feat of engineering developed for use after in
connection with the D-Day landings. The construction of these concrete ‘chocolate blocks’, as they have been called, was to be of the utmost secrecy and so it was chosen that Lepe was the perfect location. After their completion, they were transported by the sea to form the Mulberry harbours. Did you know that Jane Austen and John Constable were among the many visitors to Netley Abbey? Although it could be said that the now ruined abbey has had an existence that is as quiet as the landscape around it, it has been lauded as one of the best preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in the southern counties and has this attracted much interest from visitors throughout the generations

Were you aware the pretty Hampshire town of Emsworth, on the nearby border with Sussex, has been home to so many national and international celebrities? From actors such as Nicholas Lyndhurst and Albert Finney to P.G Wodehouse and Sir Peter James Blake who broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the world in 1994, Emsworth has always been a small town with an important role in the county. In fact, so important was the town in Queen Victoria’s reign that she herself visited in 1842 and loaned her name to some of Emsworth’s road names! Did you know that it was in Hampshire that a well known piece of farming equipment was first developed? Today farming is often associated with large tractors however in times gone by, it was the figures of ploughs and heavy horses that dotted the landscape. Amazingly it was in the village of Abbot's Anne that the iron plough was first developed in the early 19th century by two brothers whose invention caused widespread demand and changed the course of farming.
Did you know? It has been said that Four Marks is reported to
be the only settlement to be called such? Four Marks is located in the east of the county and its original settlers were soldiers who had survived the Crimean War and had been given homes and more specifically land although the village had origins dating back to at least the 16th century.

FRESH START FOR CHARGING POINTS NEXT MONTH The new electric vehicle charging points put in place in car parks across Test Valley last year are to begin charging customers from last month after an introductory free period. The machines had been free to use from their installation as an introductory offer from TVBC and the providers of the charging points, Joju Solar. As of Monday October 5, this free period came to an end after almost a year of free energy on the go for drivers of electric vehicles in Test Valley. Information stickers have been placed on the machines to inform customers of the upcoming changes, with those using the charging points to pay for their energy via a new APP, to be provided by Grønn Kontakt (GK), a subsidiary of the Norwegian state electricity supplier, Statkraft, available via this link. Users of the chargers will also be able to pay by accessing the Grønn Kontakt website and paying by debit or credit card. Currently, there are 18 fast charging points in the borough’s car parks in Andover and Romsey, each capable of supplying 22kW of charge. The existing rapid charger at Romsey Rapids car park already charges for use and is therefore not affected by these changes. All of the charge points are powered by 100 per cent renewable energy. Planning and transport portfolio holder, councillor Nick Adams-King, said: “While it’s been fantastic to be able to offer free energy for those driving environmentally-friendly electric vehicles, sadly this introductory period wasn’t sustainable forever.

COUNCILLORS COLUMN At the time of writing, the Prime Minister has just announced a new three tier system of Covid alerts. Whilst it’s good news that Test Valley is currently in the lowest tier, it is worrying that the virus seems to be picking up again right across the country. It would take a braver man than me to predict just where we we’ll be by the time this column gets published in early November but I hope I can reassure readers by saying that Test Valley Borough Council stands ready to, once again, support all of our communities if the situation deteriorates. Our focus on building community resilience coupled with the dedication and commitment of local volunteers meant that we had groups operating in all parishes in Test Valley earlier this year, collecting prescriptions, doing shopping or running errands for those who were self-isolating. We’re currently ensuring that we’re in a position to deploy that kind of council and community effort again if we need to. Our Test Valley Community Helpline – 0330 400 4116 – also remains open for anyone that needs additional support with food, medicines or even just a friendly voice to talk to. Although the current pandemic is a great example of what can be achieved in our communities by strong and well-resourced voluntary groups. The Borough Council has always sought to work with and provide funding to the charity and voluntary sector that support so many Test Valley residents. Our Revenue Grant programme currently provides a three-year cycle of funding for organisations which deliver high valued services. Due to the uncertainty of Covid, I took a report through Cabinet recently to extend that 3-year settlement for an additional year to give further stability through these tough times. That means that organisations like Unity, Test Valley Citizens Advice, Mind, Age UK and Youth in� Romsey� can plan for next year with the certainty that they will receive an inflationary increase.

Finally, I hot footed it to London recently to lobby the Housing Minister, Chris Pincher, on nitrate neutrality. The problem being that nitrate input into the Solent is causing eutrophication, leading to an increase in algae growth - which is harmful to the environment. That means developers, housing associations or small or self-builders having to demonstrate sufficient mitigation - usually by taking farmland out of agricultural use in perpetuity. The issue is more complex in Test Valley though, as our waste treatment works at Fullerton doesn’t strip out the amount of nitrates that other areas do. Meaning we need three times the amount of land for mitigation, not only increasing costs but making it more difficult to even find the land, which isn’t readily available. It’s my firm belief that Fullerton should be nitrate stripping anyway - because it’s the right thing to do - but there’s currently no requirement from the Environment Agency for them to do so. I’m pleased that the Housing Minister has agreed to take up this particular point with the Department for the Environment, so we can protect our precious waterways and ensure the right homes are built in the right places.

The Royal British Legion has been supporting Service men and women, ex-serving personnel and their families since 1921. And we're not going anywhere. The British Legion was formed on 15 May 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after the First World War: The National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers The British National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers The Comrades of The Great War The OďŹƒcers' Association The amalgamation of these diverse bodies can be attributed largely to two men: Field Marshal Earl Haig and Tom Lister of The Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers. Lord Haig served as the President of The Royal British Legion until his death. As a result of the war, Britain's economy plummeted and in 1921 there were two million people unemployed. Over six million men had served in the war. Of those who came back, 1.75 million had suered some kind of disability and half of these were permanently disabled. The Royal British Legion

Can my Will be witnessed by video? Here at Bells we have been able to continue to provide our will service to you throughout the pandemic. Making a will is an important step, and sadly, in some situations may be urgent, particularly in the context of the present uncertainties arising from the pandemic. An amendment to The Wills Act 1837 has been made on 7th September 2020 which confirms that requirements for the presence of witnesses can be satisfied by either physical presence, or by virtual means (video-conferencing). Whilst we welcome the amendment to the law in certain situations we would, however, caution against witnessing a will via video-technology, we are living in a time where the number of contested wills is increasing significantly. There is no doubt that some dissatisfied with their inheritance (or lack thereof) will look very closely at how the will was witnessed to test its validity. Furthermore, there are concerns that those who are vulnerable or lack capacity may be taken advantage through the use of video witnessing. The Government seem to be aware of this, alongside the potential for fraud and undue influence.
The Government has confirmed that existing law allows for the following physically distant scenarios: • Witnessing through a window or open door of a house or a vehicle. • Witnessing from a corridor or adjacent room into a room with the door open. • Witnessing outdoors from a short distance, for example in a garden, as long as the will maker and witnesses all have a clear line of sight and the other rules of the wills act 1837 are adhered to. This is helpful confirmation that what has already been happening during the pandemic is valid under the law as it already exists. Bearing in mind that witnesses’ physical presence will always be the best means of executing a will. This is intended for general guidance only. In all cases specific advice should be sought. FOUR MEN... QUEUEING UP TO CLEAN THE WORKSHOP FLOOR??? YES!!! AND THE EVERYDAY DEALING WITH POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER It’s true, all four men of the Forces Re-Engineered team couldn’t wait to have a go to clean the garage floor. Well, it wasn’t on hands and knees and elbow grease... it was the experience of using the industrial power assisted floor cleaning machine. They had great fun with it, who could move fastest and... of course, did the “cleaning job” at the same time. Having fun is an important part for the veterans coping with PTSD. Dealing with PTSD in everyday life situations, other people might not even think about, is extremely difficult for the veterans. Emotions, suppressed for decades, are surfacing and overwhelming. And they are not pleasant feelings; they is fear, hurt, pain, despair, frustration, feelings of being alone, of having difficulties to talk despite being desperate to do the latter. There is the feeling that nobody understands what they are going through and very few people really do, apart from other veterans suffering from PTSD. Trust is another big issue, to find somebody to be able to trust and open up to. Given the opportunity of therapy and taking it up takes tremendous courage. Talking and opening up is certainly to begin with accompanied by pure anxiety and tension. Therapy is giving the veterans tools, helping them to understand their individual patterns. Patterns everybody develop from day one; patterns of behaviour, thinking, reacting and even posture patterns. Understanding and with time recognising these patterns, slowly allowing long suppressed emotions to feel, takes time, continuous courage and determination. The therapy helps to realise, recognise, acknowledge and understand the origin and reason for those patterns bit by bit. It is a bit like “Groundhog Day”, never going backwards, but falling back into the patterns, understanding, allowing to feel and moving forward. Having a period of rest, however brief it is to begin with. When falling back into the pattern a new awareness and understanding helps every time a little more to through it. The periods of rest extend. Not long ago one of the veterans experienced two weeks of feeling good, finding it quite difficult to believe; but it was that period that helped going through the next “Groundhog Day”, helped despite the despair to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Forces Re-Engineered is a heaven for the veterans, they feel safe, feel understood; they support each other and yes, the times of laughter and jokes are increasing. The floor cleaning machine was bought with money donated by customers, not only did their donations make life easier, they helped a time of fun. The team can’t repeat it often enough: Thank you, thank you, thank you to all loyal supporters, customers and volunteers from a very grateful Forces Re-Engineered team. The Adventures of Daichi By Debbie Corney If you are new, then I would like to introduce you to a couple of fun pages – The Adventures of Daichi! Daichi is a characterised campervan. Life can become very serious at times, let’s face it, so we like to make you smile while travelling around our beloved English countryside and coast. Daichi crossed barren land and rough seas to get here, all the way from Japan, just to be with us and we love him! We have nicknamed him “The Dashing Dude” as he loves to run around and have fun. So, “dashing” he is, and otherwise known as “Dash” to his friends. Daichi is his ‘official’ Japanese name, (dai) meaning "big, great" combined with (chi) meaning "wisdom, intellect”. As Daichi is full of himself and a little overconfident, this seems rather appropriate. He even speaks Japanese when we switch on his purring, seductive engine. “Ha Dor!” and other words I have yet to discover the meaning of, he expels in a rather high pitched, very cute voice. (Don’t tell him I said that as boys don’t like it). We hope you like reading about his exploits and antics as he whisks us to exciting places around England, particularly here in the South. Here’s to having some family fun… despite it all! Since arriving on our wonderful British soil, Daichi has a brand new, very colourful kimono. His playful character wanting all to enjoy life and live a little, is now clearly visible. He has one purpose in life and that is to make our family, and hopefully you, smile. He may well be made of metal and have rubber wheels, but he has a life of his own and was certainly in full spirits when he skipped his way to the Isle of Wight. He had children excitedly waving at him at the Ferry.

Later in the week a surfer gave him a ‘shaka hand signal’, which is apparently a ‘surf signal of approval or greeting', whilst carrying his surfboard off the beach. I am glad that was clarified to me, or I could have given him the wrong signal back! Daichi was in fact so excited about his trip, we caught the early ferry and got onto the island an hour ahead of time. We had booked a house on the cliff top at Luccombe. between Ventnor and Shanklin. At the time the weather was cold, wet and windy. There had been storms, trees had fallen, and many would think we were mad. That's us… but we are British after all. We were lucky with the crossing. Two days earlier people had been on the ferry for 14 hours waiting for the rough seas to calm down. Funnily enough because we actually arrived earlier than planned, for some reason I kept being a day ahead of myself, which was great as I gained a day every day. Not quite Ground Hog Day thankfully… We had booked through AirBnB. The wooden house on the cliff top was idyllic. Truly. Situated at the end of a track, with only the coastal path winding into the distance, overlooking the misty grey sea with Shanklin Bay in all its glory clearly visible. Exactly what we wanted. Pure peace. The serenity we craved... well just for a little while. Daichi even had his own 'room' in the garden to protect him from the wind and the rain. A wooden open car port, he just fitted in. The first night was spooky I have to say. Being up on the cliff top with nothing around us everything went pitch black, and I mean pitch black, as soon as we switched off the lights. Daichi was all alone outside and I am sure he got scared, so much so

that he switched on the light outside to protect himself. I woke up, also shuddering I have to say, to see a light appear from nowhere in the garden. Nothing to do with a moving fox, I am sure. It was Daichi shivering in the dark that did it! With the howling wind, swaying trees and lashing rain, who could blame him? Despite having been to the Isle of Wight several times now, we had never been to Osborne House. Can you believe it? We are English Heritage members, so for the three of us the whole year’s membership was nearly paid for, in this one trip. I learned a lot about Queen Victoria and Albert. The staff were very versed in their Victorian history. I had no idea that Queen Victoria had been so protected as a child. She could not go out or even go up and down the stairs without someone holding her hand. Her mother was particularly over- protective and when she came to live at Osborne House with them, the Queen made sure her mother had a room right at the other end of the building. Suddenly as Queen, she could make decisions for herself. Albert was very talented and designed the house from scratch. It was in fact a new build and totally built as a family home. An escape from the London, busy and hectic life, though dignitaries and even the Prime Minister would visit and have meetings there. Despite the weather we managed to have a picnic on the beach that Queen Victoria so loved. What a special place. I could almost "feel" Victoria’s presence as we wandered around. Daichi was seriously (well playfully) impressed. It was a wonderful day out and highly recommended. Then of course Daichi had to take me to the Isle of Wight Pearl on the west coast. A girl just has

Crazy golf with the pirates to do some shopping every now and then. The grey water pearl earrings are gorgeous, and I thought I did very well not to spend a lot more! The day in Shanklin at the crazy golf, overlooking the pounding waves on the shingly beach opposite, was great fun. Stephen won a free game when, on the last shot, he hit the hole that rang the bell! Of course, we had to go back the next day to play again, (in the rain…) but this time on the dinosaur side, as opposed to the pirate side we had played the day before. You can’t beat a British game of crazy golf, even on a grey wet day… can you? At lunch in the café right on the beach front, with the crashing waves, I had helped Hayden our son with his Spanish homework. I don’t speak Spanish, but his cue cards, in this romantic, poetic language (I did not sound at all like that…) were entertaining to say the least. Attempting to ask the questions, watching Hayden’s perplexed, bewildered face trying to understand me and listening to his responses was hilarious. We did laugh. Exactly what family time is all about. It was a fantastic week. Good old family fun. We had time to read, watch movies, walk along the coastal path and generally chill out with amazing views over the English Channel. Who needs to go abroad? Well even if you wanted to, right now is not easy, so let’s make the most of our Country and have some fun. I am so glad that Daichi came all the way from Japan to take us to new and old places here on the south coast. He was beaming with full lights aglow all the way home. Where will he take us next... I wonder? You will find out in your next issue of… The Gazette!

A fresh walk from
C hilbolton
This month’s walk returns to some of the most beautiful parts of the River Test and it’s surrounds, as we once again head up to the North of the Region.
Start here
With the suggested start from The Abbots Mitre, Village Street, Chilbolton, SO20 6BA
the regular walker would expect to complete this ‘long 5 miles’ in under 2 hours. The route is well marked and generally easy walking, but there are two climbs along the way that will push the heart rate up. Leaving the car park, we turn right along the main road for about 300 metres as far as the church on the left (St Mary The Less)
This was built in the 12th century as a predominantly wooden structure, being replaced over time by the current masonry building. We walk on past the church and cemetery before taking a left hand turn over a stile, across a field, through another stile and turn right tracing the line of the River Test as far as a large wooden bridge. Here we turn right over the bridge and across the open meadows for 400 metres, then up to, and once again, across another wooden footbridge that spans another section of the Test. At this bridge it is not unusual to view trout swimming in the shallows so it is worth a lingering view. Once across this fresh bridge we arrive on Fullerton Road, where we must turn left and walk for a good 300 metres, passing the right turn and arrow for the Test Way. The next turn right is our destination...
that takes us uphill underneath a disused railway line bridge and on upwards following the outline of the field and the footpath arrows. (The fields either side are private so do follow the main path). Clearing the brow of the hill the path emerges above a large valley with views Northwards, then aims downhill, over a stile and at a steep angle towards a new stile that borders a fast moving road where we must halt. Taking the very greatest of care we need to cross the road and select the footpath opposite. This borders the left side of a wide field for almost 600 metres, with hedges and trees on the left. We enter a small wooded copse and turn left, taking the arrowed choice.
and once again traversing a disused railway line. We have an 800 metre walk along the line, with an opportunity to find the platforms that formed Fullerton Junction (hidden in the undergrowth) when Queen Victoria was purported to travel along the line to the Isle of Wight. The line approaches a new railway arch with a sign announcing the Test Way...
then across a narrow wooden bridge that spans the River Anton, a tributary of the Test. From here we turn right and follow the footpath signs that take us over a concrete bridge and up to a metal farm gate. Going through the gate we now turn left and begin a stroll along the once busy Sprat and Winkle railway line and before long we commence the second of the significant climbs. The views from the top of this climb shows Chilbolton Observatory some 3 miles away and the fields around it. These views disappear as we drop down hill once again to a local road, where we turn left again and continue the downhill trek for a further 600 metres, crossing the River Test and then taking the left hand path that borders the river. This path goes under a brick bridge and approaches a tarmac road where we turn the sharpest of right turns, around the location map...
and an important sharp left turn to take us up to the Coley Road almost opposite West Down Car Park. From here we should walk along the road for about 500 metres until we meet a sign and path on the left, signposted to the Test Way, where we swing down and follow the tree line and water meadows for around 800 metres. This includes crossing a playing field and rounding a big house along the gravel road as far as Cow Common, a small local car park.
Finish here Since we are back now in Central Chilbolton the return home is best taken over to the right to follow Joys Lane up to Village Street at the top and turn left for the final 300 metres to reclaim the car at The Abbots Mitre. Naturally enough the reward at the end of this walk can be refreshment at the establishment that hosted the car parking.

COUNCIL TOP DOG FOR 7TH YEAR RUNNING The RSPCA has awarded the council its highest award for the continued dedication to animal welfare. For the seventh year running, Test Valley has been awarded a Gold PawPrints award, which celebrates the authority’s work in ensuring the highest quality of animal welfare around the borough. This includes our work with kennels, licensing, breeders and other animals who call Test Valley their home. This is the seventh consecutive year that TVBC has received the award. Last year, the council was also given a special Platinum Stray Dogs Footprint to celebrate the awards’ tenth anniversary. The council won the prize alongside other local authorities and organisations, such as housing providers. Animal welfare officer at Test Valley Borough Council, Rod Mason, said: “This has been a very difficult year, but work to ensure the animals in Test Valley have the highest quality care and welfare has not stopped.
We all have a duty to ensure we give our animals the best quality of life and I’m very pleased that the RSPCA has again recognised our efforts. “New challenges have presented themselves during the pandemic as many people look for a new companion. We’ll continue to work hard in managing this and would of course encourage people to do their research and contact us if they’re in any doubt!” Housing and environmental portfolio holder, councillor Phil Bundy, said: “It’s really important for us to keep up our efforts in ensuring quality welfare for the animals of Test Valley. Every scar tells a story: Former Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance patient ‘Braving the Shave’ to help future patients
On 22 October 2014, Claire was walking with her husband and two young daughters when she was struck by a motorbike that had mounted the kerb. Falling backwards, Claire landed on her head fracturing her skull. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Critical Care Team were called out to attend to Claire and her life-threatening injuries. Claire was treated and airlifted to University Hospital Southampton where she underwent emergency surgery.
She added: “I would like to shave my hair to bare my scars, tell my story and show my appreciation of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Without them I would not be telling my story today. My aim is to raise enough money that will help benefit those who may need this vital service in the future.”
Fast forward to 22 October 2020, exactly six years to the day of her incident, Claire, 40, shaved her hair to show the scars she bares as a result of her injuries and the hours of surgery. Claire said: “With blood flowing from my head my husband and children feared the worst: I would die lying on the path. From that moment, I was completely unconscious. I don’t remember feeling anything physically or emotionally and have no memory of the event at all. Had it not been for the Air Ambulance taking me from Basingstoke to University Hospital Southampton, I would have died due to the pressure and bleed on my brain.”

DENTAL DISEASE IN RABBITS Dental problems are extremely common in pet rabbits. Sadly, once established they are impossible to cure and almost always require lifelong management and regular dental procedures. Not only is this expensive, but a lot of rabbits experience dental pain. Ideally, we would like to prevent this from happening and, as ever, prevention relies on understanding why these problems occur. The rabbit's teeth grow continuously throughout life in order to cope with constantly grinding food. This applies to both incisors and molars. Overgrowth of just the incisors may occur (especially in young rabbits). However, in most cases incisor overgrowth reflects problems in the back teeth as well. Molar overgrowth often results in sharp dental spikes piercing the tongue (lower) or cheek (upper), causing painful ulcers stopping the animal from feeding. As in all pets, if they can’t eat properly there will be other problems throughout the body. The two major reasons cited for these problems are 1. Congenital problems - short-nosed breeds are more likely to develop problems because of the shape of the skull. However, the main reason is diet and with an excellent diet even sensitive breeds can be protected from dental disease. 2. Dietary deficiency – lack of either fibre or calcium (or both) will results in failure to wear down teeth (fibre) or soft bones (calcium). The former will result in overlong teeth with impaction of the roots while the latter will allow these teeth to move in the sockets thus altering the way they meet and facilitating entry of bacteria. Basically rabbits have evolved to eat grass! This will be fresh grass in summer and dried grass (hay) in Winter. In addition, they will eat weeds and opportunistically take fruit or roots as they find them. Modern ‘muesli-

type’ diets were originally developed for fast-growing short-lived production rabbits. They are high in protein and low in fibre and minerals. Naturally rabbits love them and can obtain their daily calories without much chewing. Studies have shown that even if you give hay and grass with these foods, selective feeding by the rabbit will ruin the diet. It is therefore important to give large quantities of hay, grass and dark green leaves (cabbage, dandelions, etc) and top-up with a commercial ration (extruded diets are best as they have a higher fibre content). A maximum of 25g/kg bodyweight per day pellet should be fed. Many rabbits will not require even this amount provided they have sufficient fibre. It is important to have regular dental checks. For healthy rabbits this can be once a year at the time of vaccination. At Anton Vets we also recommend a free check with the nurse six months after vaccination. Unlike the incisors it is impossible to see the molars without using an auriscope which is why it is impossible to keep a regular check at home. Even then it is not possible to see all the teeth and when we suspect dental disease we like to perform a full examination under anaesthesia. Treatment for molar disease involves regular trimming or grinding of hooks or overlong crowns under anaesthesia. This is, of course, stressful for the rabbit and obviously carries a (very!) small degree of risk. And this is why we are so keen on encouraging a healthy high fibre diet and regular exposure to sunshine to promote Vitamin D production…a healthy set of teeth means a healthy rabbit!
