Hello Southbourne, Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We have a rubber dinghy, not quite like the yachts we see bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Wet suits are a good idea too! I looked very glamorous in mine… Can I hear you laughing? This month in The Southbourne Link we have our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up—I deliberately don’t listen to the news—so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Is the boiler working fine? Are the electrics all good? Does the garden need a tidy, does the chimney need sweeping or do you need new fitted wardrobes to cope with all those winter clothes? All the help you will find inside. It’s Fungi Time! Fungi are not classified as either plants or animals, but form a kingdom of their own comprising a broad range of organisms, such as brackets, stinkhorns and puffballs, in addition to the more familiar mushrooms and toadstools. Apart from being a delicious and nutritious addition to our diets, fungi are of great ecological importance, supporting many plants and wildlife. They come in a hugely diverse group of shapes, forms and colours, and many have illustrative names; take for instance the parasol, horn of plenty, amethyst deceiver or destroying angel; extremely poisonous as the name implies! What we normally call ‘the fungus’, or mushrooms, are actually the fruiting body of the microscopic organisms, the finely threaded mycelia, that live in the soil. Fungi have been around for millions of years and exist ever ywhere on the planet. In the UK, thousands of different species have been recorded, many of them edible. Autumn is a good time to enjoy a fungus foray in the woods to reap the benefits of this wonderful natural resource. Some of the most common ones such as the chanterelles, wax caps and boletes are delicious, as is the wellknown penny bun, found in coniferous and deciduous woods, but as many fungi are notoriously difficult to identify and can cause ill

SPARKLE APPEAL GETS FAB SUPPORT Local charity The Sparkle Appeal, which raises mon ey for Poole’s Victoria Education Centre (VEC) for young, disabled people, is set to benefit from a Bournemouth boutique’s unique ‘Dress to Donate’ initiative. Fab Frocks of Westbourne, which has one of the largest selection of evening and cocktail dresses on the south coast, will be donating to the charity 10% of every full price dress sold to anyone attending the forthcoming ‘Touch of Sparkle’ Ball on Friday 26 October at the Italian Villa at Compton Acres in Poole. Fab Frocks will also be supporting the event with in-store promotions, an extremely sparkly Sparkle Ball window display plus a web and E-shot campaign. Tracie Beardsley, director of Fab Frocks said: “ We only launched the Dress to Donate initiative in September and we have already supported the children’s charity Julia’s House through our Dress to Donate scheme. We are delighted to now be supporting the Sparkle Appeal with their first ever ball.” Diana Newbury, Capital Appeals Manager for The Sparkle Appeal said: “All the children at VEC have to receive regular therapy and in order to truly realise their potential we urgently need to upgrade and renovate the physical facilities for their therapy. The Sparkle Appeal recently completed the fundraising for Phase 1 of our project, to raise £2.8m to build a new hydrotherapy pool. “Phase 2 will be officially launched at ‘A Touch of Sparkle’ Ball. A new state of the art Therapy Centre (at a cost of £1.2m) will bring together, under one roof,

50 Shades of Green How to make Estate Agents sexy! Let’s face facts; the world of Estate Agents tends not to get the pulse racing particularly hard. Buying a house is, for most people, the biggest purchase they will ever make, which makes it scary and daunting and often very expensive. Estate Agents over the years have developed a reputation for adding to the stress and expense in how they conduct their business. But there is one Estate Agent in Bournemouth who might just buck the trend and, whisper it, make Estate Agency sexy. Mr Green Estate Agents was established in 2009 by Simon Ward. Simon had been working as a Mortgage Broker for a local company, and his role took him into all the local Estate Agents in the area, where he saw firsthand how the market really worked. “What surprised and shocked me” Simon says “is how much money people were charged and how badly they were treated. I started to think surely there must be a better way to conduct business and that’s when the idea for Mr Green took shape”.

Simon started the business from his mother’s back bedroom, with an advert in the local paper. “It took me 4 months before I secured my first sale” reflects Simon “but the feeling when I did was fantastic”. Three months later Simon was able to move into an office sharing with an independent financial advisor, but to him the office/shop front is not a key part of his business. “It’s all about how you deal with people, how you treat them on a personal level, that’s what makes the difference. I get 90% of my business from word of mouth, which is so much more powerful than what the shop can offer”. Right from the start, Simon knew he had to do things differently with Mr Green. He comments “it’s such a competitive market, that the slightest change to the norm can make a big difference”. For Simon it is all about how he goes about marketing the properties on his books. “I only use a professional photographer” he claims “and the brochures I produce are very high quality. You only get a brief opportunity to sell a property to a

potential buyer, and it’s so important to make sure the property looks the best it can”. And Simon has plenty of examples where this approach has been successful: “I had one property recently that had

been on the market for nine months with three other Agents. We took some new photos, rewrote the description in the brochure and on our website, and sold the property in a few days” says Simon proudly “and the reaction of the seller made my week!” Mr Green is now celebrating its third anniversary and Simon’s plans for the future suggest there is more to come. “We have to continue innovating and staying ahead of the competition” he says “we have now developed a reputation for excellent marketing and honest polite customer service, and the challenge is to build and develop on that”. There are plans to open a new shop next year, to add to the current shop in Tuckton, and also Simon hopes to take on new staff as well. “We’ve recently started to offer property to rent and we are applying the same principles in this market, so the future is very green” Simon says. Ratty returns Water voles are now being spotted regularly at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood thanks to the success of a long-term reintroduction programme initiated and overseen by Rangers from East Dorset Countryside Management Service. The first water vole release in the Park took place last summer following an extensive period of riverbank clearance and monitoring for predatory mink. Their successful survival led to a second release this summer, with 120 water voles joining those already established in the river systems, introducing new bloodlines and a boost to the existing population. This has come not just from the Rangers, b u t al so fro m th e n i n e ad j ac en t landowners, who have worked together to provide suitable habitats and crucially, monitor the rivers for mink activity. The idea to reintroduce the water vole to Moors Valley Country Park was first conceived back in 2009. Local people fondly remembered sightings of Kenneth Graham’s iconic Wind in the Willows character in the Crane and Moors river system, and the Rangers were keen to bring ‘Ratty’ back to the Park. But with water vole populations struggling to survive across the country the conditions had to be exactly right. “The water vole is Britain’s fastest declining mammal,” said Senior Countryside Ranger, Matt Reeks. “And that decline has been caused principally by loss of habitat and predation by North American mink.

Photo: Hattie Miles “For a successful reintroduction we needed not only to ensure they had a suitable immediate habitat but also to monitor a wide area both inside and outside the Park to make sure we were not bringing the water vole to a river system where they would quickly be eaten by mink”. The team were helped by the UK’s leading water vole conservation specialist and breeder, Derek Gow, and also benefited from the advice and experience of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, the inventors of a simple but highly effective ‘mink raft’. “Six thousand mink were released by animal activists from a local fur firm back in 1998 which had a huge impact on the local water vole population. After a year of regular monitoring they knew the area was mink free, and the reintroduction could go ahead. The mink rafts have also played an important role in confirming the survival of the first released population of water voles, regularly revealing the water voles’ distinctive star-shaped four-toed front foot. Otter tracks were also spotted regularly and there is good evidence that they will catch and kill mink. Otters will also eat the voles, but as they cannot enter the water vole burrows the two species can coexist and their presence is confirmation of the quality of both the water in the river system and riverbank habitat. Whilst the mink rafts will continue to be mon itored, Park visitors are now reporting their own water vole sightings to the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley, and the Rangers have also managed to take

some photographs on both the river banks and in the water. Recent surveys have found some well-established colonies in some of the quieter areas of the Park. “We really couldn’t be happier,” said Clare Gronow, Countryside Manager at Moors Valley. “As the third most visited country park in England we try to strike a careful balance between managing our visitors and ensuring our wildlife thrives. Of course it’s early days, but it’s wonderful to know that the water vole is now establishing itself again here at Moors Valley and that the work of so many people has been successful. As guardians of the Park we couldn’t be more pleased that we have been able to play a part in maintaining that rich biodiversity”. Ebony, the 4 month old labrador cross, is a typical puppy and a very intelligent little girl. She is lucky enough to have found her ‘forever home’ and with that, Waggy Tails Rescue is proud to announce that it has now re-homed its 3000th animal. The vast majority of those helped have been dogs though there are a few kind volunteers who find homes for rabbits and guinea-pigs too. Sadly, the need for the charity to exist continues, and the number of dogs we can take in depends on how many foster places we have available. We also need to raise money to fund our work and this is done through street and store collections, special events and our three shops. The Training Session starts with a questionnaire - asking questions about what participants know about deafness - before the course. During the training all questions are examined and at the end of the session we look at the questions again. No scores are taken and everybody passes. During the theory session, which lasts about 45 minutes, information is exchanged between the Presenter and course participants covering the extent of the problem, causes of deafness and clues for recognising deafness. The practical activities last for around one and a half hours and it is definitely audience participation time. Practical ways for the hearing person to communicate with the hearing impaired person are explored, we can have a meaningful conversation - but it is not always using speech. We explore lip reading, signing, finger spelling, signed supported English, cued speech, mime and gesture- i.e. charades, pictures/symbols, written communication. There is no one right way to communicate. The means of communication is dependant on the two parties concerned. The Training Session gives all participants an introduction to different ways to communicate. It is a theoretical and practical course which provides skills for everyone to improve communication skills with the people who have a slight hearing loss to those who cannot hear anything. Whether those attending directly work with hearing impaired people or they have a relative, friend, etc, who has a hearing problem, they will benefit greatly from this Training Session. All those attending will have a certificate which can be used in the professional environment as evidence of training
