Bands dedicate new concert to local charity Award-winning duo, Tinderbox, are hosting a concert on April 26th to benefit local charity, Amelia's Rainbow. The children's charity - based in Bournemouth, like Tinderbox - raises funds to create memorable activities and days out for children (and their families) suffering from terminal or life-limiting conditions. The concert, at the Regent Centre, Ch ris tchur ch, will a lso fea tu r e th e nationally-revered singer-songwriter Mike Silver, plus well-known local musician, Bob Burke. All the bands are donating their time for the cause. When the eponymous Amelia died in 2010, aged 8, Tinderbox wrote a song to commemora te h er, called 'Amelia 's Dancing'. "They decided they wanted to help the charity in a tangible way, hence this

concert. Local people working together for the good of the community, is at the heart of the work of Christchurch Community Partnership," said Lesley Cooke who is coordinating the event on behalf of presenters CCP and Coda Music Trust.

Woodlands Woodlands have always held a fascination for humans, and a visit to the woods refreshes the mind and lifts the spirit at any time of the year. British woodlands are wonderfully rich with wildlife; ranging from large mammals to the tiniest insects, and from bluebells to gigantic ancient trees, there are thousands of species to observe at all seasons. Native woodlands and what remains of ancient woodlands are the best habitats for biodiversity, and particularly important for many threatened species. Generally, areas with the best availability of light support the largest of variety of plant life, on which the animal kingdom depends to a great degree. Both native and non-native animals make the woods their primary home, and some woodland fauna such as dormice have all they need there; the canopy for shelter and hazelnuts for food (although dormice can also be found living in hedgerows, a sort of mini-woodland). Other species such as deer and many birds frequently venture into different habitats including heaths, grasslands and even our back gardens, sometimes moving from one habitat to another depending on their changing needs in different seasons. Woodland habitats are generally rich with insect life as well as nuts and seeds, and support a variety of birds from resident species like our mysterious owls, to seasonal migrants. Some are shy and elu si v e , b u t m an y w oo d l an d b i rd s including the tit and the finch families like human habitats as well, as our gardens can be similar to woodland edges or rides. Even more species will swell the garden population during harsh winters when food in the woods is scarce.

Father and son go green Dave New has been running his own window company for the last 18 years, but has recently found himself replacing broken down double glazing units more and more. Ezi-Help Now Available Help is now available for local residents aged over 65 who are struggling to pay their fuel bills this winter. A variety of cold weather related support and services for the elderly are being funded as a result of the Dorset Community Foundationâ€™s - Surviving Winter Appeal. The Bournemouth based charity has been at the forefront nationally and locally in raising awareness of fuel poverty and social isolation amongst the elderly. These two factors are the primary reasons why over 500 people in Dorset died from a preventable cold weather related death last winter. The Appeal has so far raised just over ÂŁ14,000, this sum is much lower than last year and demonstrates that times are tough for many. Despite this, the Community Foundation is working at full stretch to ensure the donations are quickly distributed to groups and organisations that work with older people in need of help during the winter months. Though the Appeal itself cannot directly fund individuals, it is working with Citizens Advice Bureaus to give out grants towards paying fuel bills. By working in this way, donors can be confident that only eligible people will receive grant payments. The Surviving Winter Appeal is currently funding; grants to assist with paying fuel bills, grants for heating repairs, extra support for lunch clubs, befriending schemes, help with transport, and it has again funded emergency radiators for Dorset Fire and Rescue to deliver to any homes they are called out to, that do not have heating. Last year the Appeal funded 25 radiators and these provided 1800 days of warmth to a great number of homes that were without heating.

Sometimes itâ€™s the simple things that can make all the difference, and one of the barriers for many older folk is icy paths and being able to get from their front door to their hospital transport or a lift to the doctors. So this year the Appeal is funding a limited supply of 1 kilogram tubs of Ezi-Melt de-icing salt for use on domestic paths. Fifteen hundred tubs have been supplied to the Appeal at cost by Ezi-Melt and these will be distributed through local community groups across the county. This is the third year Dorset Community Foundation has run the Appeal and once again it is working at a strategic level to generate extra funding for local charities and community groups who are providing immediate help and assistance to vulnerable older people and those at risk this winter. This approach was proved highly successful and last year the Community Foundation worked with and funded twenty one charities and community groups. This enabled these groups to concentrate on meeting the increased demand for their services and provide help and support to people in need, thanks in no small measure to the extra money they receive from donations made to the Surviving Winter Appeal.

Thousands raised at Panto for Charity! Children love Pantomime and this year Bournemouth Pavilion’s Sleeping Beauty thrilled children of all ages. Each year volunteers from the Variety Children’s Charity give their valuable time to attend every performance to collect much needed funds towards a brand new Sunshine coach, which this year will be provided for Victoria Education Centre in Bournemouth. Paul Griffiths, Pavilion General Manger and front of house staff support this worthy cause by working alongside Variety Committee members to fill their buckets! What is involved in getting new dentures? You will first have an initial FREE consultation whereby I will examine yo ur mo uth and yo ur existing dentures and discuss any concerns you may have. I will advise you of the various options available to you and associated costs. Should you decide to have new dentures constructed, initial impressions will be taken and specialised custom made impression trays made. On your next visit, secondary impressions are taken to ensure perfect fitting dentures and the bite is recorded. The teeth are then set on a wax base and tried in on you third visit. At this stage the bite will be checked and you will be shown your new smile. Should you wish for the teeth to be altered, it can be done while you wait and the teeth will then be re-tried. Another type of denture is the new Ultra Suction denture which is ideal for achieving suction on full lower dentures which had previously been impossible. This denture incorporates two small one way valves which push the air out as you bite down thus creating a vacuum. These valves can also be used on upper dentures where reduced palatal coverage is desired. For ultimate retention, there is an implant retained denture where two small implants are painlessly placed in to the gums and the corresponding part is placed in the denture. The

denture clips into the mouth like press studs and is held very securely, only needing to be removed at the end of the day for cleaning. Other services available include home visits, soft linings, relines of existing dentures to make them fit again, denture repairs, additions of teeth to existing dentures after tooth loss, sports mouth guards and tooth whitening trays.

Blondes are dumb? The 4th A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the Loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Mercedes Benz SL 500. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blond for using a $110,000 Benz as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Benz into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blonde replies, "Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"

Supporting Local Residents of Southbourne Family and Community Enrichment (FACE) is a project run by Immanuel Church Southbourne in partnership with PRAMA. Based in the Community building behind the church, it runs a group for Carers on the first Thursday of the month at 2pm, Friendship from Loss which is on the last Friday of the month at 11am and Tea and Topic on the fourth Friday of the month at 2.30pm. The project also runs Tea and Topic at nearby sheltered housing and works with local care homes to provide activities for the residents.

This includes work with older people with dementia as well as more able residents. There are plans in the New Year to develop new activities for people with dementia, including art and crafts. We also intend to run a Carerâ€™s coffee morning, bible study and a drop in for older people.
