Wildlife Trust launches Wilder Solent campaign As part of its National Marine Week celebrations, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is calling on people who live, work, and holiday in our region to do their bit for our marine environment. Our local coasts and waters are some of the busiest in Europe, providing employment and leisure to thousands of people each day. They are also home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, which has helped earn our region a coastal National Park, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, and multiple Marine Protected Areas. Unfortunately our marine wildlife is struggling to cope with increasing pressure from human activity; our coastal habitats are being damaged and many amazing species are in danger of disappearing. With our wildlife at a crucial tipping point, the Wildlife Trust needs help from local communities to prevent further decline and tip the balance in nature’s favour. To tackle the pressures on our waters, the Wildlife Trust is launching its new Wilder Solent campaign. This represents a local, marine-focused strand of the Wilder strategy being adopted by Wildlife Trusts across the UK. Wilder Solent encourages individuals to make easy lifestyle changes that complement the species monitoring, habitat enhancement, and campaigning work being done by the Wildlife Trust.
Participants can choose from several pledges, such as reducing single-use plastics or watching for wildlife. Advice and resources are provided on how to make each pledge a reality, and participants are encouraged to share their stories as a way of inspiring others to take action. Coastal businesses, organisations, and groups can also receive guidance about implementing pledges on a larger scale. Wilder Solent is being delivered as part of Secrets of the Solent, a four-year project that is exploring and celebrating our vibrant marine environment. With support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project is getting local communities involved through art, seafood, citizen science, and more. Tim Ferrero, Secrets of the Solent Project Manager, said: “The Solent and the seas on our doorstep link us directly to the global ocean, so the small changes we can make as individuals really do contribute to solving problems on a global scale. Pigs: It’s Pannage Time!
During the autumn months, it’s not an uncommon sight to see pigs roaming the forest floor. The reason for this is one of pannage! Pannage is the practice of releasing domestic pigs into a forest (also known as ‘Common of mast’), and goes all the way back to the time of William the Conqueror, who founded The New Forest in 1079. The pigs are released onto the forest to eat fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts and other nuts; green acorns in particular are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle which roam the forest the majority of the year. Up to 600 pigs and piglets will work their way through the forest eating the acorns and nuts from the forest floor. It is the only time of year that the pigs are allowed to ‘roam’ the open forest, the rest of the time they are kept in their smallholdings by the commoners. In the 19th century the number of pigs released for pannage was as high as 6,000. Pannage is no longer carried out in many areas of the country but can still be observed every year here in the New Forest National Park. Pannage lasts for a minimum of 60 days and is vital because acorns are poisonous in large quantities to cattle and ponies and can lead to cholic. Pigs however are believed to spit out the toxic skins and enjoy eating the acorns.
You can usually find the pigs roaming the forest floors from around the third week in September, or whenever the acorns begin to drop from the beautiful oak and beech trees. The exact Pannage dates are decided by the New Forest Verderers and the Forestry Commission based on seasonal variations. This years Pannage is due to take place between 9th September 2019 and 10th November 2019. During times of exceptional acorn falls, the pannage season is usually extended by the Verderers. New Forest pigs must also be fitted with a ring through their nose which still enables them to forage through leaf litter and surface vegetation but stops them from rooting into the ground with their snouts causing damage to the Forest. Some of the different breeds of pig that you can find out on the New Forest include: Tamworth, Gloucestershire Old Spot, the British Saddleback and the Wessex Saddleback. There isn’t a specific breed of New Forest pig. During the pannage season also keep a look out for the local artisan bakeries, farm shops and shops that sell piggy-shaped biscuits to celebrate this most ancient of New Forest practices. Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too. The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our much-loved campervan, was missed last month. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well this month he was determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. Can you believe it, we have never been. How ridiculous is that? I am sure that Daichi thought he could compete with all those immaculately dressed stallions. He rather fancied himself being groomed and brushed down. Or maybe it was all those jodhpurs and long leather boots, but that is going a little far as it is a family magazine after all. Daichi, really. The day was filled with blue

Amazing final jump of the six-bar event skies and some of our wonderful fluffy white clouds. My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer, of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the atmosphere

27 at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horses speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… uh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacy gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. Beautiful, graceful, stylish and wonderful to watch. The judges really

Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! have to know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not till December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking at himself admiringly, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next month I wonder! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

New Forest Art Society News The New Forest Art Society has enjoyed hosting their annual summer exhibition at Lyndhurst Community Centre. The exhibition subcommittee, under the leadership of Alli Goddard, Chair of the Society, did an excellent job in organising the exhibition, managing the hanging of 160 framed paintings and displaying 94 unframed works, 11 miniatures and many greetings cards. The diversi-ty and quality of the art for sale was frequently commented on. The society includes artists who work across the spectrum of art styles and media; all to a very high standard. The private view took place on the first Saturday evening giving family, friends and invited guests an early opportunity to view and purchase art works. The society was delighted to welcome Claire Wiltsher, an award winning, professional local artist, to open the exhibition. Claire’s choice of best painting in exhibition was “A Cold Winter Morning” by Colleen Cockcroft. Claire said that she en-joyed the texture in the painting which was a small and unassuming canvas that had real impact. Artists Pam Baldero, Brenda Molyneux and Sandra Morris were all highly commended by Claire. The exhibition sub committee’s choice was “Above Sauze” by Virginia Whiting and paintings by James Bull and Rachael Smith were highly commended.

The next opportunity for this will be at the Autumn Art and Craft sale, where members have their own stalls, held at the Lyndhurst Community Centre on the 2nd and 3rd of November. The society’s Chair, Alli Goddard, said, “This has been an excellent exhibition, with a diverse and interesting mix of paintings, prints and art works in many forms and media. We have had a good number of visitors and good level of sales made. I should like to thank my committee and many other helpers for their hard work in putting this exhibition together and for stewarding throughout the week.” New members are still welcome to join, for the latter part of the society’s calendar year at a re-duced price. Attendance at monthly meetings is also welcomed for a small entry fee. The winner of the coveted public vote was Carol Mileusnic. Margaret Plant kindly donated two beautiful miniatures as raffle prizes. The exhibition was well attended with high footfall over the nine days of over 1,200 visitors and the society was very pleased with sales which validate members’ hard

Tastes so good...
PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.
