Marine Conservation Zones

What is the best thing about living in the Hampshire? Many might say easy access to coastal areas which is something that wildlife lovers would agree on. Unfortunately, our seas are suffering from overfishing, exploitation for resources and damage to natural habitats. With government commitments for protecting the sea yet to be fully met, urgent action is needed to turn our currently under-protected waters back into a healthy and sustainable environment. In February of this year the Government announced that six marine sites in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight region will go forward as candidates for designation as Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in 2015. Marine Conservation Zones are a new type of Marine Protected Area created by the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. There are already sites in the Solent, the Solent Harbours and round the Isle of Wight which are protected by European law, designated for habitats and species important across the EU region. Marine Conservation Zones are designed to protect the important marine diversity in UK waters and provide an important route to the Trustâ€™s vision where our marine life is protected from the most damaging activities and allowed to recover from past declines. The six sites were recommended for designation in 2013 but did not make it on to the first tranche of 27 sites designated last November. The sites were chosen from a longer list of 127 sites to make an ecologically coherent network across all English sea areas. It was also announced at the time that two further tranches of designations will take place over the next three years, with the first of those happening in early 2015. Before the sites are put forward, the government wants to assess the levels of public support for all of the recommended MCZs. The Wildlife Trusts are urging the public to express their support by signing up to become a â€˜friendâ€™ of Marine Conservation Zones. When signing up you can opt to â€˜befriendâ€™ one or all of 37 proposed areas, similar to becoming friends of local parks, historic buildings and community projects. All â€˜friendsâ€™ will receive regular updates on the campaign from The Wildlife Trusts, with opportunities to get involved and ways to help, such as writing to local MPs and the Prime Minister to press the need for protection and, ultimately, to respond to the public consultation, expected in early 2015. The six sites are The Needles, Offshore Overalls, Utopia, Bembridge, Norris to Ryde and Yarmouth to Cowes.

Tim Ferrero, Head of Marine Conservation at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said: â€œWe have campaigned for over ten years for better protection of our local marine wildlife and yet there is still no guarantee that the zones will be allocated where we want them. â€œWe want as many people as possible to sign up to become a â€˜friendâ€™ of MCZs. This wonâ€™t cost anything but it will mean that you will be kept up to date with the latest information and progress of the campaign. It will also provide information to people who are more sceptical about the idea of protected zones fearing that they will mean â€˜banning everythingâ€™. This is not the case and sustainable activities will continue in the zones.â€? The Trust is hoping to inspire people to stand up for the wildlife which lives, feeds and finds sanctuary in the many different habitats in UK waters. Engelbert – “It is, and so many I enjoyed Smokey Robinson, Neil Sedaka and Gene Simmons... all were so helpful, and together I am very blessed with this album. Engelbert – “You know Ann every album is always a worry, but to get this kind of reaction at this stage of my career is simply super, I had no idea, and we have been so stunned in that respect, but it’s also so nice... LEWIS Overdrafts Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how…

Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you're not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdraft, treating it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.

Get paid £100 to take a free overdraft. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdrafts who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdraft. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Alternatively for a potentially larger 0% overdraft there’s the www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. Yet it only gives you this overdraft for the first year, so ensure you use that time to clear the debt or afterwards it’s 50p a day.

Use savings (if you've any). Having overdrafts and savings isn't sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdraft at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, after tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you're £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdraft's paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: "But I'll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in." True, but in an emergency, access the overdraft you’ve paid off again and you'll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read www.mse.me/repaydebts.

Shift your overdraft to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shifting deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdraft, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good option if you’ve a bigger overdraft and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a one-off 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www.mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of getting. If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you'll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with MBNA that's 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-by-step help in www.mse.me/moneytransfers. Manage your way back into credit. Cutting the cost of your overdraft isn’t the end game, you should aim to always be in credit (or at least always within your overdraft when there’s no cost). To help do ask companies you pay to shift direct debits to near the end of your working month. If paid on the 25th, aim for the 20th. This artificially boosts your balance so you're in the red less - but don't spend the cash. Moving bill dates cuts fees, but won't tackle the overdraft. So sit down and do a budget to find out where you can cut back.

Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The options above won't help if your score's poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending until October even for those with a poor credit history. The www.luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shifting card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdrafts. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, day-to-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdraft to be repaid by your income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representative APR. "I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back." If you have an overdraft the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and getting stung with bank charges – these transaction fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transaction. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no solution. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admittedly now it's mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: "I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non-profit debt help from agencies like www.stepchange.org, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, and www.nationaldebtline.org. Don’t be scared to speak them, they’re there to help not to judge.

Inspirational local images to feature in

Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition This autumn’s Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood will feature six award-winning and commended Dorset images alongside around 100 images of stunning countryside from all over Great Britain. Running from 11 October until 23 November, visitors to the exhibition will be able to see the work of some of the best landscape photographers in the country free-of-charge, chosen from thousands of entrants to the national Take a view – Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

Jake Pike Alongside other inspirational local images, the exhibition includes a stunning shot of the Jurassic Coast taken by local teenager Jake Pike, which won the Youth Classic View category. Other commended and highly commended Dorset images include photographs of the iconic Corfe Castle, Southbourne Beach, Parkstone and a glorious ZOV[ VM :[\YTPUZ[LY 5L^[VU 4PSS YLÅLJ[PUN PU [V the River Stour taken by Mark Simpson. As well as exhibiting his image, Mark will be presenting an illustrated talk about his photographs at Moors Valley from 7pm on 6J[VILY H[ [OL VɉJPHS VWLUPUN VM [OL exhibition. The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Stephen’s parents have been keen caravan people for some time. Following in their footsteps we became members of the Caravan Club. This is really good value for money. As Stephen’s Mum says, “You know you will get a high quality caravan park with good, clean facilities.” The Centenary site is set just 3 miles away from Bransgore in the New Forest National Park. It was originally part of a Second World War airfield where parts of the runway still exist and there is a New Forest Airfields Memorial just to the north of the caravan park. It really is set in a great location. We love the drive through the New Forest and Nellie adores saying “Hello” to all the horses, new forest ponies and the cows. On arriving at the Site and preparing Nellie with her roof up, we realised she was totally dwarfed by some extremely grand looking caravans that were simply stunning! I think the owners had everything that would be in a house as well as a fully equipped garden. Not a thing missing, including the spare Porsche, satellite TV, outdoor seating... We were amazed. Not to be perturbed Nellie stood there smiling cheerfully, greeting all those who passed by.

New Forest Airfields Memorial Stephen’s sister has a gorgeous yellow VW called Jessie Phyllis after her two Grandparents. Our big black Nellie with her long skirts to cover up her oversized thighs looks a bit imposing next to the delicate retro style of the VW. Anyway we had arrived! Hayden went off to play in the children’s park while we had a cup of tea. When he came back he was all smiles. “I really like the people here!” he exclaimed, “They are really friendly.” Apparently some children were playing a game and obviously knew each other well. Hayden was looking quietly on when Lizzy shouted, “Anyone we don’t know can also join in!” What a great attitude to

23 23 have. Hayden was immediately smitten and he and Lizzy became good friends for the two days we were there. In fact if anyone knows of a Lizzy, aged 12-ish, who goes caravanning with her parents, please let me know. Hayden would love to see her again! Being in the New Forest is so relaxing. The site has its own Centenary Gardens with lovely bird life including Song Thrushes and Bullfinches, so for those who like our wonderful English rolling countryside, the wildlife and bird spotting, this really is an ideal location. There are also walks for those with dogs. In the evenings there is a pizza van which makes fresh pizzas while you wait, or you can indeed order for a specific time. Stephen’s Mum and Dad treated us. The pizzas were delicious. Somehow you can’t beat eating outside in the night air listening to the sounds of the night, with good company around you. It makes all those long working hours worth it. You really feel you deserve that chilled out feeling. Camping for me definitely has that effect. I love it!

Nellie at Exbury with Naomi, one of the engines Exbury Gardens which was first opened to the public in 1955, is not far away. On our second day we decided to take a trip to see the steam locomotive, named Mariloo by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008, and the exquisite 200 acre gardens. For children there is often a garden trail with ‘things to find’ which helps keep them entertained as well as providing an educational benefit. It also set the pace of where you need to go! Hayden was more than happy to see what he could discover. Stephen’s Mum and Dad as well as sister are keen walkers so they were able to go much further. In fact there are over 20 miles of pathways, three woods and parkland to explore, so there is plenty to see. The beauty of Exbury Gardens is that it changes so much with the different seasons, so for those who have been before it is worth a second, third or even fourth visit and for those who have not been before, it is a must to see, and it is here on the doorstep in our wonderful New Forest! Nellie was thrilled with her trip to the Centenary Site and I am sure we will be back again soon…. Where will Nellie go next…? By Debbie Corney whereisnellie

Grass Roots No 4 There is a widely-held misconception out there that a Garden = Flowers. This is not so and you only have to look at the garden in the winter when there are no ﬂowers out, to see what I mean. A garden without structure is just a collection of plants and is meaningless whenever the ﬂowers are not there. A beautiful garden = plants + design (ie structure). No 5 Sometimes good ideas or solutions to problems are right under our noses but we just can't see it for looking. This is because we are usually too closely involved in our own gardens to be objective. If possible, talk your ideas through with someone else. It is amazing what can be suddenly seen after looking at it for months or even years.

7 COMMON GARDEN DESIGN MISTAKES ‘Forewarned is forearmed’ so today I’d like to warn you against the 7 most common mistakes I’ve seen time and again that people make with their gardens and the real pity of it is that they were all avoidable. No 1 Not being clear about what you want is the No 1 mistake I’ve seen in 17 years of garden design. This step, whether you’re going for a full re-design of your garden or just changing one area, is the step most people leave out or gloss over. Which is incredible, if you think about it, because if the garden is not exactly how you want it to be, it does not matter how hard you work or how much money you throw at it, it will not be right. No 2 Not having a plan is the next big mistake I see over again. Even if the garden owner knows what they want to do, by not having a plan, they are almost certainly doubling the amount of work involved and very likely the cost too. No 3 There are some gardeners who seem to think that any plant will grow anywhere they choose to put it. WRONG! Plants need certain conditions in which to thrive and if they are not present, the plant dies but people don’t think about this because the death of the plant doesn’t happen instantly.

No 6 Going down to the garden centre and buying the ﬁrst thing that catches your eye is the best way I can think of for a gardener to lose money. Always read the label before buying the plant to see if it will suit the growing conditions in your garden. If not, resist the temptation and do not buy it because it will not live. No 7 Maintenance should always be thought of as you go along. Before changing anything or buying a new plant, always ask yourself what the maintenance implications are before to take action. There is no point in having a garden that is a burden to you rather than a joy. As soon as you start using words like ‘should’ and ‘ought’ about the garden, its time for a major re-think!

Colourful autumn walks in Hampshire The National Trust has unveiled some of the most colourful places and stories in Hampshire ahead of its Great British Walk 2014. Running from 8 September to 24 October, the Great British Walk encourages everyone to explore the outdoors and discover vibrant National Trust spaces on foot. A vast and varied selection of walks is available, from those chosen by the public to handpicked walks from National Trust experts.

Take a stroll through an incredible landscape of colour this autumn, and don’t miss the top colourful choices in Hampshire, many of which can only be seen during the walking festival: Hinton Ampner: the gardens are awash with colour in autumn, from pumpkins and squashes in the pretty walled kitchen garden, to hundreds of exotic dahlias in shades of cream and yellow, orange, hot pink and magenta. Walk further aﬁeld with the Dutton Estate trail and discover vistas across the South Downs before weaving your way through the buttery-gold canopy of beech woodland. Hinton’s Ancient Tree trail tells of Civil War battles, war time evacuees and ghostly hauntings; it also reveals some spectacular displays of autumn colour; look out for the vivid yellow foliage of the black walnut tree and the deep red hues of the Norway maple. Harvest Hedgerow walk, 5 October, 10.30am – 12.30pm, £10, book on 01962 771305 Explore the hedgerows at Hinton Ampner and discover the delicious delights Mother Nature produces at harvest time. Join the gardening team on this two hour walk taking in the wider estate. Bring a basket or bag to collect any treasures you ﬁnd in the hedgerows, from rose hips and wild damsons to blackberries. Return to the tea room for a bowl of homemade soup. Autumn Colour Walks, 11 & 22 October, 10:30am – 12.30pm, £10, book on 01962 771305 Enjoy the full spectrum of autumn colour on this two hour stroll through the countryside around the Hinton Ampner estate. Take in views of the South Downs, and woodland colour and harvest, before returning to the tea room for a warming bowl of home-made soup.

The Vyne: from 8 September to 24 October, a new dogfriendly downloadable walk reveals the hidden history and autumn palette of the estate woodland. On your way to the woods you’ll stroll by a large lake, fringed with the orange, crimson and deep purple leaves of liquid amber and swamp cypress trees, which create beautiful reflections across the water. In the woods, beeches and oaks mingle with sweet and horse chestnuts to present a canopy of rich autumn foliage. Listen out for the sharp barks of rutting fallow deer, and keep your eyes peeled for exotic looking (though possibly poisonous!) fungi. Hidden history walk, every Wednesday, 12pm and 2.30pm, normal admission charge only The Vyne’s new hidden history guided walk takes you on a journey back in time. Pick up quirky and little-known facts about The Vyne’s past as you take in the glories of the garden in autumn, including the ‘hot border’, packed with fiery orange and red floral displays. Animal Photography Walk, 17 September, 6 – 8pm, £30, book on 01256 883858 This unique event provides photographers with a rare opportunity to learn how to track animals such as deer at dusk, and hopefully capture some great natural shots.
