Hello Lyndhurst, Autumn is now truly here, the nights are drawing in and the air is somewhat cooler. Stephen, Hayden and I did in fact get our last dip in the sea just a couple of weeks ago. We went out in our rubber dinghy (…as the Sunseeker was in for repair!), not quite like the yachts we see bobbing in the water, but fun nevertheless. Wet suits are a good idea! I looked very glamorous in mine… Do I hear you laughing? This month in The Lyndhurst Directory we have our very important trades and business people to call. I generally think things are looking up — I deliberately don’t listen to the news — so make sure the house and garden are ready for the colder season. Are the electrics all good? Does the chimney need sweeping or do you need new fitted wardrobes to cope with all those winter clothes? All the help you will find inside. Please do keep our local businesses busy! Local support for education
Woodlands Lodge Supports Local Infant School Woodlands Lodge Hotel opened its doors to all the local community to celebrate one year of ownership of the Hotel. Robert and Imogene Anglaret held this to celebrate ‘what a difference a year makes’ as they have refurbished, repainted and in some cases renovated this hotel to bring it back to its former glory. The hotel has recently won 3 star AA status gaining several categories at 5 star level and was also awarded a rosette for the restaurant, which was fantastic news for this young couple. A free delicious buffet was provided for an unexpected 250 people including steak, prawns and sweet corn and well as the usual sausages and hamburgers, with salads and rolls.
As part of their intention to support the local community, they held a raffle and raised £77 Pounds for the Netley Infant School, which was presented to the school at a collective worship assembly. This is the first of several innovative ideas that Robert and Imogene have – more later! Jan Faint, Head of Netley Infant School, said “We are absolutely delighted that The Woodlands Lodge Hotel has made our school the beneficiary of their raffle on their open day. We look forward to working with them again in the future”

What to do in your Garden in October Now that Autumn is now officially here with the passing of the Autumn solstice on September 21st things may seem to be winding down in the garden, and so they are to a certain extent, but there are still jobs to be done including harvesting fruit, like apples, pears, blueberries, blackberries, etc. Because of the odd weather early in the year my pears are aren’t good and I will be lucky to get a dozen Autumn is a beautiful time of year edible fruits from the whole tree! However that may be, here are a few of the jobs that can be done this month: • Plant your daffodils and crocus now for a good Spring show. • Prune hedges and shrubs. • Start preparing flower beds for next years plantings. • After you do the last mowing of the year on your lawn scarify with a grass rake and top dress with a mix of sand, compost and fertilizer. • Protect Fuchsias from frost and chilling winds. Bring in potted ones to your house or greenhouse • Collect leaves and add them to the compost heap. If you did start a plan for your garden with drawings and photographs in a note book as I suggest a few months ago, have a review of it and see what you may want to change. If there is an area that needs a major overhaul now would be a good time to start planning it. Especially if there are items that need to be moved rather than scrapped. As the days get shorter why not pull out some of those gardening books you’ve been meaning to read-and have been too busy actually gardening to do so, settle down in your favourite chair with a mug of hot chocolate and start dreaming what you can make happen in the garden next year.

Brilliant offer for half term and beyond New Forest Wildlife Park is offering a fantastic autumn deal for families with young children. From October 1st to March 24th next year, any children measuring under one metre tall will go absolutely FREE. They and their families will be able to enjoy not just the park’s amazing animals but also the fabulous new adventure playground especially for children under six years. There are also some exciting October half term activities for families and children from Saturday October 27th to Sunday November 4th, including a free Pumpkin Nature Trail and Animal Encounters every day (check tim es o n e ntry ). On T hur s day November 1st from 11am to 3pm there will also be a special Hedgehog Day courtesy of the People’s Trust for Endangered Species. There’ll be a chance to meet a hedgehog, find out all about its strange habits, do some hedgehog crafts and ask as many questions about hedgehogs as you like. The park’s two new adventure playgrounds, both completed this year, have been a huge success with visitors and took over six months to build. New Forest Wildlife Park is involved in international breeding programmes for endangered species and also works with the RSPCA to rescue injured or abandoned animals. It has several species of otters, deer and owls, including the endangered giant otter, as well as lynx, foxes, wallabies, European bison, wolves, wild boar, ferrets, pine marten, polecats, harvest mice, badgers and more. The park has timed animal feeding sessions throughout the day, animal encounters on certain days and keeper talks about the amazing wildlife. The park is owned by Carol and Roger Heap, who are dedicated to wildlife conservation and also run the Chestnut Centre Conservation and Wildlife Park in Derbyshire and Battersea Park Children’s Zoo in London.

Lyndhurst and District Community Responders A Community Responder is a member of the public who is a volunteer and is trained by South Central Ambulance Service to respond to certain types of medical emergencies in their own community, pending the arrival of the ambulance. e.g. heart attacks, strokes, falls. You may already have seen us around the village? We have currently five trained volunteers from the local community and have answered over 1000 emergency calls since we were established in late 2003, throughout the villages of Lyndhurst, Minstead, Bank and Emery Down. The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest. We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.

New Forest Organ Society Our concerts are monthly (usually 4th Tuesday in the month) and we have professional musicians who come from all over England to give concerts who all bring their own modern electronic organs and play a variety of music, big band, Latin, light classical etc. The Society has been giving concerts for 33 years and our audience is 180-200 each month so very popular. Ratty returns Water voles are now being spotted regularly at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood thanks to the success of a long-term reintroduction programme initiated and overseen by Rangers from East Dorset Countryside Management Service. The first water vole release in the Park took place last summer following an extensive period of riverbank clearance and monitoring for predatory mink. Their successful survival led to a second release this summer, with 120 water voles joining those already established in the river systems, introducing new bloodlines and a boost to the existing population. This has come not just from the Rangers, b u t al so fro m th e n i n e ad j ac en t landowners, who have worked together to provide suitable habitats and crucially, monitor the rivers for mink activity. The idea to reintroduce the water vole to Moors Valley Country Park was first conceived back in 2009. Local people fondly remembered sightings of Kenneth Graham’s iconic Wind in the Willows character in the Crane and Moors river system, and the Rangers were keen to bring ‘Ratty’ back to the Park. But with water vole populations struggling to survive across the country the conditions had to be exactly right. “The water vole is Britain’s fastest declining mammal,” said Senior Countryside Ranger, Matt Reeks. “And that decline has been caused principally by loss of habitat and predation by North American mink.

Photo: Hattie Miles “For a successful reintroduction we needed not only to ensure they had a suitable immediate habitat but also to monitor a wide area both inside and outside the Park to make sure we were not bringing the water vole to a river system where they would quickly be eaten by mink”. The team were helped by the UK’s leading water vole conservation specialist and breeder, Derek Gow, and also benefited from the advice and experience of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, the inventors of a simple but highly effective ‘mink raft’. “Six thousand mink were released by animal activists from a local fur firm back in 1998 which had a huge impact on the local water vole population. We wanted to make sure our returning water voles would be safe,” said Matt. “The mink rafts have been designed to attract curious mammals, and once ‘on board’ they walk over a clay pad which very neatly records their tracks.” Eleven rafts were built and positioned throughout the local river system

After a year of regular monitoring they knew the area was mink free, and the reintroduction could go ahead. The mink rafts have also played an important role in confirming the survival of the first released population of water voles, regularly revealing the water voles’ distinctive star-shaped four-toed front foot. Otter tracks were also spotted regularly and there is good evidence that they will catch and kill mink. Otters will also eat the voles, but as they cannot enter the water vole burrows the two species can coexist and their presence is confirmation of the quality of both the water in the river system and riverbank habitat. Whilst the mink rafts will continue to be mon itored, Park visitors are now reporting their own water vole sightings to the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley, and the Rangers have also managed to take

some photographs on both the river banks and in the water. Recent surveys have found some well-established colonies in some of the quieter areas of the Park. “We really couldn’t be happier,” said Clare Gronow, Countryside Manager at Moors Valley. “As the third most visited country park in England we try to strike a careful balance between managing our visitors and ensuring our wildlife thrives. Of course it’s early days, but it’s wonderful to know that the water vole is now establishing itself again here at Moors Valley and that the work of so many people has been successful. As guardians of the Park we couldn’t be more pleased that we have been able to play a part in maintaining that rich biodiversity”.
