We are coming to my favourite time of year, the summer. I love nothing better than to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee listening to our beautiful English bird songs. It is also great to be able to go out and see new places, visit friends and enjoy some space, whether it is by our amazing coastline with some of the best beaches in England, the New Forest in all its splendor and magnificent wildlife or in the countryside, we have it all here on our doorstep. Daichi, The Dashing Dude, our new Hampshire Publications Campervan took us to the rolling hills of the Purbecks this month, to see Dinosaur Footprints! What a great day out that was. Good family fun at its best. I do hope you enjoy reading about our exploits, it is just for fun and we hope it gives you some ideas for yourself. We live such busy, hectic lives, it is good to balance it with some time out and good company. We have also been working hard and now have a brand-new website which we are thrilled with! Our loyal advertisers are all online as well as in the magazines. If you know of an activity occurring, then please let me know as I will add this to our “Local Events� section. Dazzling Damselflies! Watching damselflies dance through the air is one of the quintessential experiences of summer, and something many of us look forward to every year. Garden ponds are important habitats for damselflies, and creating even a small body of water on your patch is a great way to attract them to your home. You can find lots of helpful guidance on making a wildlife pond at www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk Here are some damselflies to look out for as the weather gets warmer... Beautiful Demoiselle Beautiful demoiselles are large damselflies, usually found on small, fast-flowing rivers. Males have metallic blue bodies and striking, dark wings, and they show them off with a flitting, fluttering flight in a bid to attract mates. Females are slightly different with brown wings and green bodies. Common Blue Common blue damselflies are easy to find as they are drawn to almost any water body – they are often the dominant damselfly species at large lakes and reservoirs. Males are pale blue with bands of black along the body, and females are either blue or a dull shade of green. Azure Damselfly Azure damselflies are very common around

most water bodies, and can also be found in grassland and woodland. They are also a familiar garden resident, particularly visible in the warmer months. These damselflies are pale blue with bands of black along the body, and the defining black segment on their back is U-shaped. Banded Demoiselle Banded demoiselles are large damselflies that live along the edges of slow-flowing rivers and canals among lush, damp vegetation. They can also be found near still ponds and lakes, though typically those near to rivers. Their name derives from the distinctive ‘fingerprint’ mark on the males’ wings. We were delighted to see southern damselflies thriving at Hockley Meadows nature reserve last summer, and we hope to see them again this year. Through careful management, we have created an environment in which these rare and beautiful damselflies can thrive. We couldn’t have done this, or secured Hockley Meadows at all, if it weren’t for the support of the community and generous gifts in wills from local wildlife lovers. Alice Ashcroft

‘Walking with Wise Women’: an introduction to herbal medicine, with Kate Scott BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine Kate Scott is a Medical Herbalist (and shepherdess) with 15 years’ experience in working with herbs. She forages plants for food and medicine, creating wonderful teas, candles and gifts as well as medical potions. Her products are borne from her love and knowledge of all things botanical and her great love of the outdoors. This workshop at the New Forest Heritage Centre is an introduction to simple herbal remedies that
you can prepare yourself at home from plants native to our gardens and hedgerows. There will be lots of things to make and a handout with information and recipes for you to try and, weather permitting, a herb walk where Kate will show you some simple plant identification. Participants will make a tincture, some tea and a simple salve with beeswax: a pot of each to take home!

New Forest Art Society News At the recent AGM of the NFAS, Rachael Smith, the out-going Chair, reflected back over a highly successful year that has included well attended monthly meetings, stimulating workshops, trips to London, and local galleries, and opportunities to paint together.
Membership of the Society has grown and, this past year, exceeded the 100 mark. Membership is still open to new people joining and the membership fee is £25 annually (with a 25% reduction for members aged 16-25 years of age). The membership form is on the website (www.newforestartsociety.weebly. com) along with programme details, monthly newsletters, pic-tures of events and art works, and enquiry form. Visitors are always welcome to join the monthly meetings (entry fee £5). The Society’s Facebook page also has reminders and links to pages of interest.

Allison Goddard was voted in as the new Chairperson. Alli was formerly the secretary and has been Vice Chair for this past year; Rachael congratulated Alli and expressed the view that the So-ciety will be in good, safe hands. Rachael was thanked for her hard word and leadership over the last four years and presented with a gift, an artist palette and brushes brooch. Following the ‘business’ part of the meeting was a shared supper, quiz and mini exhibition of mem-bers work, with the theme of ‘roots’. The April 2019 to March 2020 programme promises to be another excellent, interesting year. As well as being on our website, the full programme is on the NFAS notice board in the corridor at Lyndhurst Community Centre.
Rachael said that it had been a privilege to serve the Society as Chair, to work with the hard working, committed committee members and to get to know so many established and new members. She thanked everyone for their help and support. Three other committee members, as well as the Chair, have stepped down and were thanked for their invaluable contributions

New Forest Show to donate all revenue from child ticket sales to The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is donating all proceeds from child ticket sales at the 2019 Show to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary. The bursary was established in 2018 in memory of Samantha Bailey and her unborn daughter Florence both of whom passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Samantha had been heavily involved with the Cattle Section of the New Forest Show for many years. The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July and 1st August 2019 at New Park, Brockenhurst. Tickets are available to purchase online now from the New Forest Show website. Sam was a young farmer and estate agent living in Tiptoe, Sway. Following in the footsteps of her grandparents and mother she led a wonderful life breeding and showing the Sandlea herd of Charolais cattle. At just 34 years of age Sam tragically fell ill on 16th January 2018 and died eight days after losing their daughter Florence late in the pregnancy. Sam was also a longstanding member of the New Forest Show’s Cattle Committee. The New Forest Agricultural Show Society set up a bursary in their memory. The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary aims to support young people in agricultural education, with two main aims: • Fund students attending agricultural college, allowing them to begin a career in agriculture. • Pay for applicants to attend short courses that will benefit their career in agriculture The bursary is supported and administered
by The New Forest Agricultural Show Society. The amount of subsidy provided will depend on the money raised throughout the year. All children aged 5-15 can enter the 2019 New Forest Show for just £1. Children aged 4 and under can enter for free. All adult and senior tickets purchased online via the New Forest Show website before 23rd July will receive a 15% advance ticket discount. New Forest Show tickets are also available to purchase in person at three locations: Pot Pourri in Brockenhurst, Christchurch Information Centre and Ringwood Town Council. New Forest Open Art Exhibition – Call for Submissions The ever popular New Forest Open Art Exhibition, sponsored by ExxonMobil Fawley, is now in its seventh year. The New Forest with its timeless beauty continues to inspire artists of all ages and to attract painters, sculptures and photographers from across the region. Entrants are now being sought, with the closing date for submission set as Monday 1 July. Entrants can submit up to three items each, and works must relate to the New Forest and have been created since July 2016. The Adventures of Daichi
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Daichi, otherwise known as “The Dashing Dude”, our new Hampshire Publications Campervan, sees himself as a young, playful yet rather debonair kind of guy, so when he decided to take us to see the Dinosaur Footprints in the Purbecks, we were rather surprised. How can anything be that old!? (I did not look in the mirror this morning…) How on earth can these footprints be engraved for so long in the hard Purbeck stone? What a feat of nature. Our Jurassic Coastline is packed with amazing history for us to explore and marvel at, and Daichi could not wait to get us there. Dashing along the country roads, bouncing over the hills with magnificent views over the rolling countryside, Daichi was in his element. He is so glad he travelled over thousands of miles of terrain to finally arrive on our beautiful English soil.

Daichi serves up lunch... with a view! The footprints can be found at Keats Quarry along the Priest’s Way on the Purbeck Coastline. Can you believe that these dinosaurs roamed our land some 140 million years ago! (Maybe I do not feel so bad about my age after all.) Yes, that long ago and we can still see their footprints today, fossilized in the rock. It is thought that this was a shallow lagoon where these brachiosaurs (translated as “arm lizard”) would gather to drink together. They were long necked plant eating dinosaurs, around 50 tonnes each, or five times the weight of a modern elephant, and measured more than 25 metres from nose to tail. Wow, that’s BIG! 27 rock and preserved as the fossils we see today. Hayden had great fun trying to step from footprint to footprint, to literally follow in the dinosaurs’ footsteps. He finished up leaping (boys…) across at full stride, but even that was not enough. These dinosaurs were massive. Quarrymen Kevin Keates and Trevor Haysom discovered this amazing find in 1997 when the site was still being worked and Daichi is certainly glad they did. What a find! The famous Dancing Ledge is nearby and Daichi was all ears when he found out that this pool was blasted out of the rocks by a former headmaster of Dunford School, so that the pupils could swim in the summer. The school sadly no longer exits but its salty water pool enjoyed by thousands over the years is a playful legacy it has left behind. It so happens that Hayden, our son had been doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his school, and by chance he had done his expedition in the Purbecks with his friends. They had walked for two full days, carrying all their equipment,
One small step for a dinosaur... from the car park at the Sandbanks Chain Ferry to Corfe Castle where they camped for the night, then onto Swanage the next day. They looked pretty exhausted, but all were smiling when they arrived triumphant at their destination. I am sure the dinosaurs would have done this route in no time, with those powerfully long, yet graceful legs. It is fascinating to think that these boys and girls in 2019 took a very similar route to those amazing, extinct creatures of yesteryear, some 140 million years ago. Now there is a thought… Daichi was very proud he took us to somewhere we had never been before. That is his purpose, with his chirpy step and tooting horn. Where will he take us next, I wonder? On Your Plot
Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.
Jobs for June :-
• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem. Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs
A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
