Watching for Lapwing Lapwing, green plover, peewit, tewit – this bird of many names is a spectacular sight in winter. You don’t always have to go far to spot lapwings, as in winter their numbers increase in Britain as birds flock in from the colder continent. You can see them on farmland and grassy areas in wetland sites (like estuaries, lakes and reservoirs) at this time of year, roosting balanced on one leg with their heads tucked away or feeding on invertebrates. The flight of lapwings is unusual and can be described as ‘floppy’. Their large, rounded wings move slowly, feathers spread and showing flashes of the white feathers underneath; the slow wingbeats can make them appear to float and is very recognisable feature of the lapwing. Springtime flocks dart and zigzag, these amazing aerial displays confuse predators as their flight and mixed colouring make each bird hard to focus on. At first glance their plumage may look dark and dull but look a little closer or watch it catch the light and you will see the iridescent sheen of greens and purples. Both males and females have a crest on their heads, although the male’s is longer and showier. Their other names of peewit and tewit relate to their call. Lapwings often call as they fly, the calls can sound a little robotic. Around 140,000 pairs breed in the UK, some will remain here over winter but many more arrive as their numbers more than quadruple in the winter. As they are not breeding it is 6

a good time to look for lapwing on the coast. They may be joined in their flocks by other wading birds or starlings, taking off together as dusk settles to find a safe place to roost. Unfortunately, these fascinating birds are declining, and they are now red listed by the RSPB. Changes in farmland practises has been a big factor in their decline as nests fail and food is increasingly scarce. Like other plover species, lapwing next on the ground, meaning their eggs and chicks are particularly vulnerable to predation and disturbance. There are some positive trends however. On nature reserves and other sites that are managed for wildlife there has been recent increases in lapwing populations, as more pairs manage to successfully raise chicks. It is hoped that with careful management of the land they may once again become a common bird of our countryside

With a shakier start to the year than many could wish, Hampshire still remains one of the most beautiful and historic counties in all of Britain. From a racecourse with an interesting heritage to a story of survival in the face of pestilence, here are ﬁve more fascinating facts from around the county.

Did you know that Tweseldown Racecourse was purchased by the British Army in 1854 during the Crimean War for use as a training ground? The Hampshire racecourse has a heritage of interesting events, including several royal visits from non other than Queen Victoria herself when she oversaw a display consisting of more than fifteen thousand troops. Several years later in 1867, Tweseldown would become an official racecourse and would later go on to host olympic events in 1948 among many other prestigious occasions. Amazingly, the Hampshire Beekeepers Association has been in existence for nearly one hundred and forty years. The Association has witnessed many changes and events, including the Isle of Wight bee disease which devastated many numbers in the area in 1904 and was said to have been the reason behind the near decimation of the British Black Bee. This disease in the bees badly affected the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Beekeepers Association and destroyed countless hives for nearly two decades. Excellently though, in the coming years, there was greater understanding of the disease and the numbers of bees and their keepers continued to grow to the thriving society it is today. 14

Did you know... The Hampshire Bat Group has reported sightings of seventeen of the eighteen species of the UK’s bat breeds? Amazingly, the Bat Group has also spotted two of some of the most rare bat breeds in the UK which can even prove elusive throughout the rest of Europe. These two rare breeds, the barbastelle and Bechstein bat have been seen in the New Forest and ongoing work is being done by the society to research and encourage more numbers in the county.

In the 1960s the coastal village of Calshot welcomed guests from the world’s most remote island Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic Ocean after a volcanic explosion forced the island’s inhabitants to seek shelter elsewhere. Although there were some social issues, causing many to return, a housing estate was built and many residents chose to stay in the Hampshire village. In memory of the kindness of the Hampshire people however, those who did return then renamed the island’s harbour after the village of Calshot!

Hampshire has often beckoned the creative talents of writers and artists and one such author was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who stayed in Emery Down for about a year to research his book, The White Company. The Sherlock Holmes author often wished to test his talents for literature in stories away from his famous detective and placed greater value on his other titles. During his stay in Hampshire, he would often be seen socialising in the village and most particularly enjoying one of the area’s many picturesque walks.

Property Protection Trusts PPTs are by far one of the most common types of trusts included in wills.

The PPT is designed to take the deceasedâ€™s share in the home and give someone else (usually your spouse) a life interest in the property which will give them the protection of living in the property for the remainder of their lifetime or earlier if the trust specifies i.e. until remarriage. It also ensures that if the survivor requires long term care, at least half the property is preserved for the benefit of their beneficiaries who are normally the deceasedâ€™s children.

So, what is the point of a PPT?

These types of trusts are generally used for married couples or civil partners to ensure the share of the home will ultimately pass to your children at the end of the trust period whilst still ensuring the interests of the surviving spouse are protected. For example, a married couple, who have not been married before want to leave their share of their house to their children. They currently own the house as joint tenants. Dorset and Wight would sever the tenancy on the property registering them each as 50% owners. They then have their wills written to represent that if one died, their half of the property would be held on Trust for the benefit of their children but allowing the 16

The main reason for a PPT is the protection it provides for the beneficiaries i.e. your children, to ensure they are protected and ultimately receive a share of the home. If the share of the home is simply gifted to your partner directly, this could cause a number of issues â€“ the main one being that the whole value of the house could be assessed towards payment of care fees. Another is sideways disinheritance i.e. the surviving partner remarries and the house passes to their new spouse under the Will. A PPT will enable the partner to stay in the home and will avoid the risk of the partner potentially disinheriting your children. It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from

their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van We sneaked out! Well, this was just before the third Lockdown when we were still permitted to go out for a drive. Daichi loves the beach so we decided to go a little further afield and go for a spin. Well not quite a spin, but Daichi certainly was excited. In fact, if you see him in his bright red shorts and surfboard, with his dancing dolphin you will see just how much he loves the beach! A huge smile and an optimistic outlook, that is our Daichi. So, to Weymouth we went. It was a crisp, bright day with a bracing wind that will not beat us Brits. No! We will go out and enjoy ourselves. We will smile whilst clenching our teeth and standing like iced figurines, pretending all is fine and we ARE having a great time. I have to say that wind really was biting and for a split second I nearly turned around and ran back into Daichi’s warm and cosy interior. I resisted and took my life in my own hands. Weymouth, apart from the successful 2012 Olympics, is famous for its sandcastles. This family fun loving activity

Daichi with his bright red shorts! has been popular here for the last 100 years. In truth, Weymouth has possibly the finest sand on earth! Amazing. I learned that a Weymouth sand sculpture would last until the end of time if it was kept in a vibration-proof glass case. Astounding! Not only that but if you make a sandcastle using a liquid chalk base and a powder colour finish, it could last up to two years on the beach… providing a dog did not play with it of course. Daichi had planned a Treasure Trail for us and for this one we had to find the missing mermaid. Seriously? Fictional of course, but it gives a purpose to finding all those clues and discovering new and sometimes hidden features of our history and architecture. George III made Gloucester Lodge, here on the seafront, his summer holiday residence and visited fourteen times between 1789 and 1805. Apparently, he even went into the sea in his bathing machine! Gloucester Street reflects this history with its stone heads, representing the King’s staff, proudly placed at the entrance of the houses. A good clue to

find indeed and one I would never have seen or even known about without these educational and entertaining trails. If you have children that complain about walking, these are a crafty find. This particular trail took us through some of the town and then back onto the Esplanade where in the very near distance, in the bay, were four huge Ocean Liners bobbing up and down. A reminder of the times we are in and the limitations of travel, holidays and restrictions. Not to be beaten Stephen, myself and Hayden marched forth to discover yet more clues and try and recover this poor missing mermaid who must be quite distraught by now. After all we were taking our time, chatting away, photographs galore and had even had a coffee! I would not rely on us if you were in dire straits and in desperate need of being saved! The Jubilee Clock Tower, majestically overlooking the Esplanade, is a celebration of times gone by. It commemorates Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Erected in 1888 and it became a Grade II listed monument in 1974. It is such a symbol for Weymouth, you know exactly where you are when you see it. It is interesting that areas often have a monument or building which is quintessentially theirs. A pure representation of exactly where you are on this planet of ours. Landmarks. Stable points of intrigue that speak of earlier times. I wonder what this clock could tell us if it could speak? Walking along the The Jubilee long, splendid Clock Tower

Spot the stone head! stretch of space with the glorious sand and sea, watching dogs running around and walkers smiling at each other, we see that life is good, harmonious and much calmer than any news would have us believe. Greenhill Gardens at the top of the small hill is a stunning place to gaze into the horizon. Glistening sea, a night sky approaching, the moon appearing. We finally got all the clues and found the missing mermaid you will be very glad to hear. She is safe. What is funny is that yet again I guessed the correct answer at the beginning of the trail… from a possibility of 25 places! I really think I should do the lottery… Well, we may have had many troubles this last year and 2021 may not have started as we have wanted it to, but Daichi has hope. He is planning a year of ‘staycations’. Yes, there maybe some delay now, but this will pass and we will all be able to mix together again soon and boy will we appreciate it! Maybe we will leave the computers behind and throw off those shoes and run into the (rather cold) British waters and splash around like never before. Daichi and the Corney family cannot wait!
