Well done Andrew of ANS Photography! So here we are in February 2015. We seem to be doing fairly well as far as the weather is concerned. I wonder if we will get away with a relatively mild winter, or will that snow from America arrive much to the children’s delight? I do remember an April, not so long ago when we had quite a lot of snow, then last year I think was quite sunny in April, so who knows? Whatever it will be we will manage I am sure. Nellie took us to Burley (in the rain) this month. You can read all about her, The Hampshire Publications Campervan, on pages 22 and 23. If you have any suggestions as to places she could take us in the next few months, so that we can write about it, please let me know. Once the weather gets a bit warmer again, she will take us camping! Following my New Year’s Resolution to sort the house out we have started to throw those unwanted items away. Celebrating the best of British wildlife photography... The annual highly-acclaimed British Wildlife Photography Awards (BWPA) exhibition opens at Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood on 21st March. It features the best of thousands of stunning entries celebrating the beauty and diversity of British wildlife. Amongst a host of striking images this year’s category winners include a shag resting, a puffin in the jaws of an otter, a gannet breeding colony, Scottish woodland, and a telephone box being reclaimed by nature. Locally, Hampshire-based Alex Mustard won two of the competition’s 16 categories with his images of blue sharks off the Cornish coast, while Wiltshire-based Nick Upton won the Documentary Series category with his collection of hazel dormice pictures from a survey day in Somerset. Unusually, central London was the location for Lee Acaster’s winning shot, of a Greylag Goose against a dramatic city skyline. Mark Ward, editor-in-chief at the RSPB’s Nature’s Home magazine, and one of the eleven competition judges said, “The winning photograph shows a familiar bird in a familiar setting, but the visual impact is extraordinary. “The stormy, brooding backdrop sets a dramatic scene, while the orange and pink from the bird bring vibrancy to the monochromatic cityscape”. Wildlife photographer, TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham is a keen supported of BWPA and has also exhibited his images at Moors Valley. “Every year the British Wildlife Photography

Awards generates an incredible catalogue of splendid, exciting, imaginative and artistic images”, he said. “Proving beyond doubt that we have the richest palette of life to celebrate in our own backyard.” Moors Valley is one of a handful of locations to host this national touring exhibition. Countryside Ranger, Katie Davies said, “We are really privileged to have this important national exhibition in east Dorset. The BWPA celebrate the best of British wildlife photography, across both professionals and amateurs and with so many stunning photographs on show the exhibition is proof that you don’t have to travel far from home to capture some amazing images.” The British Wildlife Photography Awards exhibition opens daily in the Visitor Centre at Moors Valley Country Park until 4 May. Flavia - “Well I want glamour all the time, and every time I and Vincent do a scene, I want the wow factor from dance, and then the costumes.” Ann - Do you miss appearing on SCD? Both - “Of course. We did it for over ten years, but while we miss it, and owe it so much, we also felt we had done all we could with it.”

‘TOTAL WIBIT’ Mainland UK’s first aqua park launches in the New Forest
Just 20 months ago, New Forest Water Park launched their state of the art Rixen cable wakeboard system which has proved to be a huge hit but this May they expect to create an even bigger splash when they launch the mainland UK’s first Wibit Sports Park. Similar to the assault course used on ‘Total Wipeout’, Wibit consists of interlocking sections providing endless on-water activities from the likes of slides, monkey bars, trampolines and even a climbing ice tower. The inflatable, interlocking modules will provide New Forest Water Park with a floating playground of fun, entertainment and fitness to participants aged from 6 to 66. With installation taking place on the 13th April, the German designed and engineered equipment will undergo rigorous safety procedures before opening to the general public on Saturday, 2nd May 2015.
The Park’s MD Mark Jury enthuses “We couldn’t be more delighted about this new addition to the Park. The 1994 Geneva motor show signalled the arrival of a new kind of vehicle, one that would revolutionize the world motor market. At the time few people could have predicted the effect the Toyota RAV4 would make.
what was best about their car. They named its manoeuvrability, ease of access, lofty view of the road ahead, ingenious packaging, versatility and reassuring capability, even when the going gets tough.
The initial Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4-wheel drive (hence RAV4) opened up a new sector for compact, manoeuvrable sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Toyota had unpresumptuous aspirations for its new car, expecting worldwide sales of only around 4,500 models. When 8,000 orders swamped the Japanese automaker in the first four weeks alone, production volumes had to be doubled.
As a result, 2014’s RAV4 points towards an even stronger focus on family use. The result is a car that is more refined with better exterior styling, a more airy cabin and loadspace, greater comfort and higher levels of safety. The only drawback with the current RAV4 is the oldfashioned interior. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a major issue – but it is noticeable all the same. The car is undoubtedly luxurious, especially in ‘Invincible’ 2.2 D4D Auto guise, but the cabin still looks at least a decade old. It’s not poor quality or anything. In fact it all looks very hardwearing. It’s mainly the switchgear that looks really dated. Behind the wheel, much of that is forgotten once the pure pleasure of driving takes over. The RAV4 is smooth and gracefully punchy. Indeed, its all-wheel drive capability is more sophisticated than ever before.
To begin with, it was available only as a three-door with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and either five-speed manual or fourspeed automatic transmission. Measuring just 3.96m long (little more than today’s Toyota Yaris), it was unlike anything else at the time. The public had an appetite for the new kid on the block, however, and in 1995 RAV4’s first full year on sale – almost 6,800 were sold, quickly establishing it as the fourth bestselling car in Toyota’s 14-strong British line-up. Twenty years on, and the RAV4 is almost unrecognisable. That’s because the compact SUV marketplace has evolved and matured in line with customers’ changing requirements and preferences. Generally speaking, two decades ago, this type of car was regarded as a substitute to sporty hatchbacks and coupes. Today its popularity is among families wanting a more fun car over multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) and estates. Over the years, Toyota has worked hard to keep the model firmly at the heart of its segment, without forfeiting the entertaining-to-drive quality that defined the original RAV4. When it came to creating the latest model, Toyota talked to existing RAV4 customers around the globe to understand

It’s easy to see why the RAV4 was, and is, such a hit. It is undoubtedly thanks to this car that the SUV market developed from a niche to become a vital feature of the motoring majority.

1. Pre heat the oven to 380F/180c. 2. Place the butternut squash onto a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place into the oven to bake until cooked through and starting to turn golden brown; this should take For the stuffed chicken approximately 15 to 20 minutes. 4 chicken breasts 3. Using a small knife, make an incision into the side of each chicken 170g butternut squash (peeled and breast. Save some roasted butternut squash to garnish the tops 250g toasted pecans, finely chopped of the chicken breasts when they are cooked. 3 free range eggs, beaten 5. Sprinkle each filled breast with the chopped thyme and season 50ml olive oil generously with sea salt and black pepper. For the sauce 6. To prepare the pecans take whole pecans and pulse them in a food ¼ white onion (finely diced) 4 slices of pancetta or smoked streaky processor until they resemble course breadcrumbs. 7. Beat the eggs with ¼ tsp of salt (which helps to break down the egg bacon, chopped making it easier to dip the chicken in) and place the chopped pecans into 1 tsp freshly chopped thyme a bowl. Then dip each cutlet into the egg mixture and then the pecans 1 clove garlic, crushed and make sure they are well coated. 180 ml double cream 8. Place the chicken breasts onto a tray drizzled with olive oil and then 120 ml dry white wine drizzle each breast generously with more olive oil and season once more. 4 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Place into the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. 9. Garnish the escallops with the remaining caramelized onions and freshly chopped parsley, don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewers before serving! 10. To make the sauce start by sautéing the pancetta or bacon until crispy and then add the onions and cook through until softened. At this point add the garlic and thyme and continue to cook for another minute to release the flavors. 11. Add the white wine and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until almost all of the wine has evaporated. Then add the cream, parmesan and seasoning. Continue to simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 12. To serve, place each chicken breast onto a serving plate (don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewer) and spoon over the sauce. The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Nellie took us to Burley! On the planned day, upon waking, the sun was shining and it all looked perfect to see the wonderful sights of the open land and deep forestry so near to us. Unfortunately, as none of us in the family are particularly keen morning people, and taking such a long time to have breakfast and get ready, by 11.38am when we finally left the house, the sun had totally disappeared… in fact just as we set off the rain started to pour – again! Mum and Dad had come to stay so we all went, with Mum and Dad following in ‘The Matrix’, much like our holiday on the Isle of Wight in the summer. Nellie was not perturbed by the rain and suitably stopped at the viewpoint just as you enter the New Forest from the A31 at Picket Post. It really is a fantastic view and if you ever need some space to relax, chill out or reflect, then this is a good place to go. Last summer we were at this very same point and a New Forest pony came

Nellie admires the views along and started eating the picnic of a very frustrated family, as you can see in the photo! Since the weather was very different at this time, we continued on our journey, to Burley. I have always found Burley to be somewhat special. For me it takes you back in time and I enjoy the slower pace of life the area seems to invite. In the summer there is a horse and cart to take you through the countryside, but today there was not so much activity, though all the quaint shops were open. We just had to take a look in each of them of course. Hayden bought the most cute pair of Sloopers at “The Old Shed” (not slippers, no I didn’t make a spelling mistake, just in case you wondered…). They are very much like a pair of jesters’ shoes and anyone who has been to the house and seen them on Hayden’s growing feet, has remarked how much they like them. They were a bargain at just over half price. Hayden bought them himself with some of his Christmas money. Money well spent I thought – and not on an

After all the shopping excitement we went for lunch at The Burley Stores. Dad, who is a truly northern man and loves his sea food, opted for the breaded whitebait. He was not disappointed, the plate was full and thoroughly enjoyed! We all watched through the window as another downpour of rain soaked the village. (I couldn’t resist taking a photo of a place mat in one of the shop windows...) I was determined that we would stop for a cup of tea in Nellie, so off we went, back to the viewpoint, and on went the whistling kettle. With the roof

up, Hayden ‘upstairs’ and the front seat turned inwards, which is really useful, there was just enough seats for all of us to enjoy a cuppa and admire, albeit in a way that we were glad to be under cover, the glorious, if rather damp looking views in front of us - with Elvis softly singing in the background. We would never have done this without Nellie, as a car is just not the same. The van brings us all together no matter the weather and in true British style we enjoyed ourselves despite the rain!
Place mat says it all... We didn’t stay overnight in Nellie. There are of course many caravan parks and campsites in the New Forest area. Stephen’s parents will be staying at Bransgore in their touring caravan at Easter. Stephen’s sister will also be staying in her new bright yellow VW Campervan named Jessie Phyllis after her two late Grandmothers. That will be a story to tell! So where will Nellie go next...? on your Gerdening Tips
PLOT
Planning veg for the year ahead Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season.
If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where. Jobs for January:Plan your crops Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons Sew lettuces indoors Start rhubarb crowns
It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil,

awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. .If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come - as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
