Discover a winter wonderland this Christmas The fire is glowing. You’ve eaten your own weight in turkey. The Grinch has discovered the true meaning of Christmas for the fifth time today, and you feel yourself slipping into sofa-bound oblivion. A waft of warm pudding rouses you, and so the cycle continues.
Perhaps it’s the perfect day. But after a week or so you may start to feel like the pudding you love so well, and that is no way to start the New Year! Break the cycle and discover a winter wonderland near you… • Refresh your senses and go on festive wildlife hunt. Who will be the first to hear woodpeckers drumming, robins singing, or spot the unmistakeable red berries of a holly tree? • Visit one of our wetland nature reserves like Lower Test near Totton or Farlington Marshes near Portsmouth. Watch the overwintering wildfowl foraging for food or coming in to roost – some, like our visiting Brent geese, have flown here all the way from Siberia! • Play Poohsticks with friends and family on a bridge over a river. Collect a stick for each person of similar size and
weight, but make sure they look different so you can recognise them. Drop the sticks on the upstream side of the bridge, then turn around to the other side and see whose stick arrives first. Endless fun for everyone!
• Unleash your inner explorer and look out for wintry animal tracks and signs – pine cones that have been stripped by hungry squirrels, animal fur caught on fences and footprints in mud, sand or snow. • Bring joy to the natural world and help our feathered friends through the cold weather. Keep feeders well stocked, and provide fresh water for birds and other animals (don’t forget to check it each morning to make sure it hasn’t frozen over!).

Marine Paintings of the New Forest Exhibition The New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst is now host to its first marine painting exhibition dedicated to the New Forest National Park’s beautiful coastal environment. The event was opened by Hon. Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott at a well-attended preview evening in October. The exhibition features five local artists: Barry Peckham, Peter Frost, Richard Tratt, Colin Richens and Barry Miles. Barry Peckham recently celebrated 50 years of painting with a retrospective exhibition, also at the New Forest Heritage Centre. Peter Frost said, “it’s been great working towards this exhibition and we are all thrilled to see our paintings looking so good on display in the centre of the New Forest”.

Giles Gould, Centre Manager, is delighted to be able to show the coastal beauty of the New Forest National Park. “The New Forest occupies 220 square miles and has 26 miles of stunning coastline, much of which is little-known. This is a great opportunity to come and be inspired by these fabulous paintings of the coast, and I hope that visitors will be able to see some of these places for themselves.” Entry to the New Forest Heritage Centre and gallery is free, though donations are very much appreciated. Works are for sale.

Community supports launch of new charity ‘Olivia Inspires’ People from across the New Forest, educational, sporting and musical communities turned out to support the launch of a new charity ‘Olivia Inspires’ to enable the spirit of Olivia Burt to live on.

Olivia, from Milford on Sea, was a gifted and beautiful young woman who inspired others. Only 20 years old, she was killed in February 2018 in a horrendous incident at Durham, where she was a first-year university student studying natural sciences.

She was just embarking on a journey that would have doubtless seen her leaving a lasting mark on our world. But more than this, everyone who knew Olivia remembers her smile and her kindness, and how she inspired others. Olivia Inspires aims to allow her spirit to live on by helping young people aged 11 to 18 years, whose families live in the New Forest District Council area and who are facing financial hardship. Grants will be provided to help them develop their potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and sport. The charity, set up by Olivia’s parents Nigel and Paula, was launched on Thursday 3 October at Lymington Town Sailing Club, where Olivia, who sailed for Great Britain, was a member. The evening included speeches from Nigel, as well as British Sailing Team member and friend of Olivia’s, Sam Whaley. Sam recounted how Olivia had encouraged him to take the step from being a club sailor to competing nationally which has now led to him

Rabbits, Kindness and Mission Christmas What has big ears, a twitchy nose and is loved and adored by a small person? A Sylvanian Family rabbit to the average adult human looks like a small hard plastic rabbit covered in a velvet material – it stands, motionless on two feet. However, to the 5-year-old girl who received not only one rabbit but also a whole family of rabbits, this was her world over Christmas. A world she could escape into, make up stories and create imaginary lives. Lily* was one of the children who was helped by Wave 105 Mission Christmas. Identified by her school as a family in need of support, Lily and her dad had been through a rough time and were struggling financially. Dad as a single parent was trying to make ends meet by juggling work and looking after his daughter. They only just had enough money for basic needs – food and a roof over their head but certainly not enough for presents. Lily’s school contacted us and asked if we would add them to our list of families to help. Her teacher mentioned that all Lily wanted this Christmas was a Sylvanian Family animal and her dad had been scouring charity shops to find one but to no avail. Every day during December, an army of volunteers in Chandlers Ford were counting and sorting through the mountain of donated presents. Every day they checked for specifically requested toys but no luck for Lily. Then one morning towards the end of Mission Christmas, a van-load of presents was delivered from Sainsbury’s and in the midst of the trains, cars, dolls, teddies, books and Lego was a Sylvanian rabbit family and a house for them to live in. Lily’s teacher collected and gave them to her dad. Lily was able to play with her little family over Christmas and throughout the following year. This would not have happened without the generosity of individuals and companies who donate every year to Mission Christmas. Over 93,000 children and young people live in poverty in the south (SO, PO and BH postcodes)** which means these children do not eat a hot meal on a daily basis, have no central heating in their homes and do not own a full uniform to wear to school. During our annual Mission Christmas campaign, Wave 105 Cash for Kids asks the public to donate new and unwrapped gifts to help these disadvantaged youngsters, so they will have something to open on Christmas Day. This is our community, helping our local children to have a Happy Christmas. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Call Upon Children to Support Their New Schools and Youth Campaign Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) is calling on schools, clubs and youth groups to help keep their paramedics ‘life-saving ready’ by taking part in their new education campaign; Learning Saves Lives. It costs the Charity £6 per day to fund the training of one Critical Care paramedic over the course of a year. With the help of 4-to-16-year-olds across the region, HIOWAA aims to raise £30,000; enough to train 15 of their paramedics. The Charity is encouraging schools and youth groups to raise funds by hosting non-uniform days and dress up days. HIOWAA Director of Fundraising, Rachel Leaman, said: “Every day is a school day for our Critical Care paramedics, and they need your help to allow them to keep learning. If a class of 30 pupils each donated £1, imagine what a difference that would make!”

The Adventures of Daichi
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van For anyone who is new to reading these fun pages, I would like to give you some background. They are meant to be a little tongue in cheek, family and friends orientated with places to visit around our wonderful southern coast and countryside. “Daichi” is a Japanese Nissan Elgrand, a converted Campervan who has a life of his own. He likes to show off and it is he that gets us out of the house, away from the computers and the TV, looking outwards. Daichi had his first criticism last month, a serious gentleman who did not see eye to eye with the “Dashing Dude’s” playful nature. You see, we like to bring a smile to your face and maybe lighten life up a bit. (We sincerely apologise to the gentleman who clearly did not react like this.) After-all there are plenty of things that do the opposite, so let’s not be too serious, let’s live a little, have some good old English entertainment and create some great memories. Here we go… again! Daichi really did his homework this month. Caring for the environment is so important and Daichi found something rather special. True to his nature, this area has a name that makes you instantly smile…

A sighting of the lesser-spotted Debbie! “Slop Bog”. Yes, we went to Slop Bog! You can imagine my reaction, or maybe best not to. Actually, this is a fascinating place, situated just off the A31 to Ferndown and the B3072 to West Moors. It is an SSSI that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest! Not only is it a fascinating place to explore, but it was saved by a group of people who call themselves, “The Slop Bog Guardians”. How wonderful is that. Way back in 2003 trees were going to be felled and this group of dedicated locals got together to save the day. Their motto is - “To preserve and protect the character of Slop Bog Local Nature Reserve by maintaining a balance between the views of the local community and national conservation strategies”. Daichi is impressed. We had got all kitted out in wellies and raincoats, and Daichi had the coffee ready. He knows me well. Off we set, rather early for us as the weather was going to turn and we did not want to get caught in the bog and have to be air-rescued. (as if… remember the time Nellie got stuck in the mud…) As soon as you enter the bog area, there is the peaceful silence of wondrous

27 nature, with a wall, a backdrop of constant swishing and humming from the hundreds of cars passing on the main road just on the other side of the majestic outline of trees. The difference between our busy, hustling, noisy lifestyle and the serenity of nature is unmissable. Not far into the bog we saw, what I thought was something burnt in the middle of a clump of trees… showing my ignorance, it turned out to be a food block, possibly a salt lick for the cows roaming around! The trampled muddy earth around it, made it look like a burning. Maybe I am once again showing the difference between our ‘dangerous environment’ which is all too often prevalent in the news and the calmness of what was actually before me. A very good reason to get out, away from our electronic age for a while. The British White Cattle even came over to say Hello and prove it was a feeding area! Stephen enjoyed doing his best David Bailey impersonation, taking lots of photos of the curious calf. We regrettably did not see any lizards, snakes or slow worms, or maybe this was a blessing as Daichi may have screeched off and left us stranded. In the summer this is a haven for butterflies and birds including Stonechats, Dartford Warbler,

Cattle roam the heathland Nightjars, Snipes and the Greater Spotted Woodpecker. This day you could only see the Lesser Spotted Debbie… literally in my raincoat. Frogs love it here too and all sorts of funghi thrive in full glory. The beauty, the space and the tranquillity really helps you to see things in perspective, ‘chill out’ (literally, as it was not too warm) and collect your thoughts. The coffee that Daichi provided from his whistling kettle, overlooking the heathland was very welcomed. A simple morning out on a cold, slightly wet November day. Life does not have to be full on 24-7. Time out can make all the difference. There are hundreds of these Sites of Scientific Interest, over 4000 in fact in the UK and 240 in Dorset alone. Maybe you could find one and let Daichi know? He loves to hear from you. It is always possible to help and volunteers are welcomed with open arms. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn some new skills and look after the environment. A win-win we say. As Christmas is coming and there is much to do, do remember to take some time out for yourself. Taking a walk is very therapeutic. A Very Merry Christmas to you all, from Daichi the Dashing Dude! GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

MONTHLY WALK by Malcolm Price
A walk tracing history from Beaulieu 2Â hours plus, depending on the number of stops made and the length of refreshment break at the turnround. It is an absolute treasure of a walk that heads down to Bucklers Hard beside the River Beaulieu, taking the coastal path slightly downhill, then returning by the same route. It is extremely well signposted, with the majority of the route following the Solent Way signs, while alongside that there is a cycle path which offers a more direct but less interesting route, while suitable for wheelchair users.
This month’s walk ventures South of the Test Valley into the New Forest National Park, as far as the historic village of Beaulieu, down near the Solent. The village offers all sorts of entertainment, the Motor Museum, the Abbey Palace, the donkeys (photo 1) which Photo 1
roam freely in the street and myriad of shops. Parking within the village can be at the top of the High Street, in the pay and display or within the Montague Arms Hotel, Palace Lane, SO42 7ZL (photo 2), provided you patronise their establishment later. This is also the chosen start point for this walk.
Taking the start point from the Montague Arms we must turn right down the lane beside the hotel, taking us onwards past the fire station, then passing the rear entrance to the car park sending us away southwards along an extensive gravel track. All these early tracks contain shingle and gravel underfoot, making it good for walking in pretty much any weather conditions. After a left turn through a gate then a right turn beside a large house we pass Baileys Hard, then a while after that, a dog leg turn before the option of footpath or the more direct cycleway (photo 3). The coastal path must be the chosen option with the prospect of clear views across the estuary as well as the chance to watch the seabird life. At low tide the river margins are festooned with all manner of birds feeding along the muddy beds; such as, green shank, red shank, curlew, oystercatchers and various gull species. Photo 3

At numerous points along the route there are detailed information boards located beside the path, which add a great deal of background to the nature around the woodlands.
Returning to the walk; the coast path offers several sections over raised duckboards, clearing bogs and marshes, which obviously become more evident at high tide. Eventually, after many twists and turns in the path, following the river’s tideline, this segment comes out in a clearing that once again shares the spoils with the cycle trail.

More recently Sir Francis Chichester set off on his solo round the world sail on Gypsy Moth IV from Bucklers Hard in Summer 1966 before making his way to the official start line at Plymouth.
A little way down this shared trail, the walkers swing left (photo 4), following the footpath marker which takes us down to the foreshore as well as passing through the marina and boatyard. There are numerous yachts moored in this sector of the tidal river as well as jetties leading out to them and over to our right we emerge at the bottom of Bucklers Hard with the wide green and workers cottages either side (photo 5). One of these is generally open for viewing for a visit fee, while the The Master Boat Builders House Hotel (photo 6) is open for the business of providing refreshment. Photo 5
Shipbuilding at Bucklers Hard started in earnest the in 18th century when they won contracts to build HMS Surprise and Scorpion for the navy. Using New Forest timber they went on to build 3 ships of the line that fought at Trafalgar in 1805, but slowly went into decline during that century. During World War 2 the area was used as a base for landing craft ready for the Normandy invasion of 1944.
Having soaked up all this atmosphere and tranquility it is time to make the return journey, this time keeping the water constantly on the right. At all times keep a good lookout for the footpath direction signs, as opposed to the shorter cycleway. Once reaching the long gentle uphill gravel track after leaving the seclusion of the coast path we are truly on the homeward stretch; finally passing the Montague Arms car park, the fire station and then down into the village centre. Apart from the hotel, there is a plethora of coffee houses or eateries to reward the weary walker and once refreshed there is still the Motor Museum and Abbey Palace to investigate. It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside. Tastes so good... Mulled Wine
An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don't bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Eat, Drink and be merry!
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)
Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 4- 6 adults
Method
Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the avours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the ďŹ reside.
