Wildlife News
Wonderful Winter Fun at Testwood Lakes Whilst it has got a bit colder outside, Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers will be giving families a warm welcome all through the winter. There is still plenty of fun to be had for children of all ages at Testwood Lakes nature reserve in Totton. For children aged 2-5 years there are weekly Forest School sessions on Monday mornings. Families can book ahead for a 6 week term (£39) and children can cook on a campfire, use tools to make things from wood and play in nature. Every second Tuesday and every last Friday of the month families are invited to drop in for a Wildlife Tots session themed around a story with some exploring outside and some crafting inside. And for dads there is a Dads and Tots drop in session every last Saturday of the month. These sessions are all 10.30am-12noon. For even younger ones (0-2 years) there is a weekly Natural Babies session every Tuesday morning. There are buggy walks, crafts for adults, sensory play and songs for babies. For older ones every last Saturday of the month there are activities for 5-11 years (Wildlife Watch, 2-4pm) and 12-18 years
(Wildlife Rangers 1-4pm). Young people can learn more about wildlife and take part in activities to help wildlife such as making a bird box or taking part in a conservation task with tools. There are opportunities to see wildlife through bird watching and pond dipping activities. Booking essential for Wildlife Rangers, adult accompaniment essential for Wildlife Watch. It’s a suggested donation of £4 per session. Parking is available at the Education Centre on the hill overlooking Testwood Lake. Please follow the green signs. Ballard School Dancers ‘Highly Commended’ at National Competition for Creative Performance A talented group of dancers from independent school, Ballard, have been recognised at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Dance Competition. Held at Reddam House Berkshire, the ISA Dance Competition brought together youth dancers from schools across the UK. Showing off their skills in the KS4/KS5 competition category, Ballard School’s Senior Visions Dance Company received the ‘Highly Commended’ Award for their F.E.A.R. (Forget Everything and Run or Face Everything and Rise) performance. The group of girls included Megan Tapsell, Kate Devereaux, Jasmine Brewer, Jordan Tapsell, Imogen Spackman, Isabella Aspin Reeve, Amy Leagas, Holly Pitts, Millie Sandford, Emily Poole and Ana Stocker. Sharon Ladbury, Head of Dance at Ballard School, said: “It was a great day with many schools performing across all key stages in a variety of styles. Our girls were very professional throughout, including Megan and Jordan Tapsell who also entered the ‘Dance-Off ’. The whole team flew the flag brilliantly for Dance at Ballard!’’ The Ballard School Visions Dance Company is a programme for the ablest dancers in Years 6-11. They meet weekly for intense dance tuition, which gives them an opportunity to develop their dance vocabulary, technique and choreography skills. At the
tournament, the girls also got to see Maisie Wignall perform the Lindy Hop. Maisie is a former pupil who left Ballard in 2016 to study Dance and Performing Arts at the Arts Educational School in London. Sharon continues: ”We had a good catch up with Maisie, who performed an amazing dance with her youth company. It was great to see her and how well she is clearly doing following her time with us’’. Andrew McCleave, Headmaster at Ballard School, said: “I was delighted to hear that our pupils performed to an outstanding level at the National Dance Competition and I am pleased to see their achievements recognised with the ‘Highly Commended’ Award’’. New Forest Ponies
When you visit The New Forest there are a group of about 5,000 locals that you can’t but help noticing. They have been hanging around for about 2,000 years and what they don’t know about the forest is not worth knowing. We are talking about the wonderful New Forest Ponies of course! All of the ponies found in the forest are wild in the sense they can roam freely but in fact they are owned by New Forest Commoners. The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest). Think of the New Forest as one large farm! If you have ever wondered why the grass is so neat and tidy here in the New Forest it is thanks to our ponies and cows! In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford
warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest. Each year, the ponies are rounded up in what are called drifts. Over thirty of these drifts take place during the summer and autumn each year giving the commoners a chance to check the health of their animals and wean and handle the foals.. You will find New Forest ponies dotted all around our National Park. With around 5,000 of them, it won’t be too long until you spot one. There is plenty of nutritious food available for the ponies and you will often find them grazing across the open moorland in small groups. You may see some of our ponies have silver collars on them. When the ponies are rounded up as part of the drift, some of them have these reflective collars put on them to help make them more visible at night time. However, not all of them are caught and some are good at losing them! If you are driving at night and see a reflective collar on a dark road then take it as an indication that there are animals about, some of which you may not be able to see so easily, so please drive with caution. BLUE PLANET II - LIVE IN CONCERT Community News
BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural
wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. East Boldre set to music by local writer I have co-written an album of songs about East Boldre, my village. My cowriter is Jim Kean and we have been friends for 25 years or so.
Five of the songs are true stories, which I have permission from the families of the persons involved to highlight on the album.
I met Jim when he was lead singer with country band “FEVER”. He had also been in rock bands before going into London’s West End as a musical actor, playing the roles of Che Guevara in Evita, Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and Peter in Jesus Christ Superstar.
The true stories in song are: “The Lady with the Pram”, “Dick, the horse that died from farts”, “The day we drank John Cutler’s Cider”, “Oh crash bash bang wallop” and “Mesopotamia”.

Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. Wines: Choice Desserts Dessert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are ‘late harvested’, incorporate ‘noble rot’ (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can be sparkling and fortified, also. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular, for many dining occasions. Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the Limarí Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine. Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite from the 17th
century, the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and, of course, volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.
Torres Floralis (Spain) is a further popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making FloralisMoscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations. CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche
Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.

GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?
