Dear Lyndhurst, Bank, Emery Down, Minstead, Brook and Bramshaw! It is that busy, exciting time of year again. Can you believe it? I am really not at all ready, but it will all happen whether I get a move on or not, so I guess I had better get cracking! I also have a one of those ‘big’ Birthdays coming up...sushhh...it is the big 50 and we are having a party to celebrate. It is a good excuse to let our hair down for the evening. Having been ‘accused’ all my life of being way older than I am, (it all started at the age of 15 when a policeman said I was endangering my daughter’s life by not having lights on our bikes. This was in fact my nearly 8 year old sister at the time...) it was really refreshing to have two people look surprised when they heard my age recently. But maybe they thought it should be my 60th Birthday?! We have to laugh don’t we. Well now is the time to finalise the house, finish the decorating, get the new cooker, set up the spare room for guests, and yes... cook the turkey! Family and friends is what this time of year is all about, whatever your beliefs, so I do hope all goes well for you and you get some time to relax and make the most of your time off. It is time to Act for Nature by Kizzie Henderson The Wildlife Trust has published a briefing to the government called Natural Fixes, which focuses on two key areas to ensure natures recovery. We need support for a nature and wellbeing act and for the full designation of marine conservation zones and we believe that we can start to see this recovery become a reality over the next 20 years.
Our most deprived communities are 10 times less likely to live in the greenest areas; fewer than one in 10 children regularly play in wild places compared to half a generation ago, but if every household in England had good access to quality green space, it could save an estimated £2.1bn on health care costs. To address this, the Nature and Wellbeing Act would call for local and national ‘ecological networks’ to be mapped out and created, to reconnect wildlife and habitats in real living landscapes. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is already demonstrating the effect that nature can have on our wellbeing. At Winnall Moors in Winchester, the Trust has been working with local people and anglers to restore habitats in and along the River Itchen. This work has seen a remarkable recovery of populations of wildlife and wild fish stocks in this urban wildlife reserve and has restored natural flood processes that provide protection for the City. On the Isle of Wight, the Trust has been running a Woodland eco therapy project to support adults with mental health issues. Participation has been life changing for the attendees, demonstrating huge benefits of connecting with nature. The Trust also delivers Forest School programmes, across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, that show how children can learn more effectively and build their confidence in the outdoors, with nature.

The loss of wildlife is continuing at an alarming pace. 60% of our key species are in decline as is our health and wellbeing. Our proposals would put nature at the heart of how decisions are made and by restoring our degraded natural systems will help rebuild our economy, tackle a wide range of health problems, reduce the severity of droughts, improve our food security , absorb carbon dioxide emissions and make the UK a better and more inspiring place to live. It is time to act for nature’s recovery. Debbie Tann, Chief Executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust added: “At a time when our need for nature has never been greater, it is under more pressure than ever before. We’ve already lost a staggering 97% of our wildflower meadows and 60% of all wildlife species are still in decline. Hampshire’s population continues to grow – it is predicted to rise by at least 100,000 people in the next ten years, mostly in the older age groups. Health professionals are now starting to recognise the contribution that nature can make to wellbeing – but there simply isn’t enough nature, in good condition, to support the health needs of our growing society. If we want the health and wellbeing benefits that nature provides, we must act to restore its health too.”
We have joined forces with RSPB to call for a Nature and Wellbeing Act – a new law that would put nature at the heart of how decisions are made about health, housing and other development, education, economic growth, flood resilience and social cohesion. In order for this to happen we need public support. Has your life been impacted by illness? Would you like some support and information? If you are living with an illness, care for someone who has an illness or are bereaved and would like support, information or to meet people in similar situations, then The Coates Centre may well be able to help. This brand new service and facility aims to offer information and support in a variety of ways to anyone in the local community whose lives have been affected by illness. Examples include a drop in centre where trained volunteers can offer a listening ear and signpost you to other services of interest, all while having a coffee. A programme of activities will also be available ranging from laughter yoga, complementary therapies, and informational talks to cooking classes. These can be easily accessed and aim to provide both information and support. Services are free of charge; all that is asked for is a donation.

Nicky – “The album is called ‘We’re Just Passing Through’ and this is because it’s what we both felt when writing the album... it’s been fun, but also personal too.” Ann - The great Kate Robbins, how did you two get together? Nicky – “I sent her my first album, she loved it, and we started talking ideas and songs and, then bingo, we were writing which is wonderful.“ Ann – How have your peers been with you since this new career? Nicky - To them it’s new, but to me it’s something I have been doing all my life really, but yes, a great many are pleased for me, and the rest, well I will let the music do the speaking.“ Ann – What is your favourite track on the album so far? Nicky – “We both love ‘Tell My Heart’. It was a fun song to record, and the lyrics well they do tell a great story, and many people have fallen in love with this track already.“ Ann – You recently appeared on “Who Do You Think You Are“ enjoy the experience? Nicky – “It was a great experience and makes you very humble really... learning about your past is a great thing, I would highly recommended it, and it kind of places you as a person.” Ann – Now your hit show “Long Lost Family“ very emotional too. Nicky – We are just very privileged to be present at this very private time for some of these families, and yes you do get caught up in the moment, but I try to hold back, as its they and not I the focus should be on.“
Ann – Your favourite kind of music is…? Nicky – “I like so many styles from big band to jazz and even punk, but for me I think that whole era of Rat Pack, style and great songs, for sure is the area you would want to return too...” Ann – If you could go back in time and duet with someone, who would that be? Nicky – “Frank, Dean, Johnny Rotten, I would love to mix it all up... we are so lucky we have such a history here to dip into, so for me it would have to be a mega mix of voices.“ Ann – You appeared in the singings show “Just The Two of Us“ with soul legend Beverley Knight ... daunting? Nicky – “She is superb and well it was a worry, knowing I would have to sing with her, but she is a great teacher, and really imparted so much love and knowledge with the show... I was very lucky to have her with me.“ Ann – So what is next for you then? Nicky – “We hope to do some live shows with the new album, and then more of the same, radio TV and music, but yes always music, it’s such a part of my life. “

Santa Paws may be coming to town but this time of year can be hazardous for dogs… Pet News
for the first time! Trees can easily be pulled over, power leads chewed through and fallen pine needles can get stuck in paws. It goes without saying; don’t leave your dog unattended around any decorations.
During this cold weather be mindful of highly toxic antifreeze, ensuring it’s kept well away from your pet. Also the rock salt spread by gritters can cause dehydration, liver failure and pancreatitis when dogs walk on it and then lick their paws. As dog owners we all want to ensure our dogs enjoy a wonderful Christmas, but with the celebrations come potential dangers that we all need to be mindful of. In terms of food chocolate is very toxic so save those Christmas tree chocolates and keep them out of reach of your dog. If you’re thinking of serving up a Christmas dinner for your dog remember Turkey skin can cause pancreatitis, cooked bones are brittle and can splinter and choke your dog not to mention the toxic onion found in stuffing. There are some great Christmas inspired treats for your dog if the way to your best friend’s heart is through his tummy! Decorations can also prove to be a problem, especially for a young pup that is experiencing a Christmas tree
Finally we all love a sprig of mistletoe and a splash of holly but did you know the berries are poisonous? Indeed so are the poinsettias which make their way into our homes at this time of year. Flight delayed by over 3hrs this summer (or any time since 2008)? EU reg 261/2004 means you're entitled to £100-£480 per person compensation, regardless of the cost of the trip, even for flights going back to 2008, if it: - Was an EU flight - ie, any from an EU airport or to one if an EU airline. - Arrived over 3 hours late or was cancelled. - Was the airline's fault, which covers pretty much anything barring extraordinary circumstances such as air-traffic strikes, bad weather and volcanoes.

My dad called me outraged at the 'new' foreign exchange charges on his bank statement for using his card abroad - nearly £50 in total. Yet banks and credit card providers have always levied these (and I've always nagged him to sort it, but he's my father, he'll never listen to me, I hope you will). The shock comes from the fact banks have now been forced to split charges out on statements, not hide them in the exchange rate. Most debit and credit cards add 3% loads, so £100-worth of euros costs you £100 plus a £3 charge. Instead grab a specialist load-free credit card just for spending abroad as they give near-perfect, bureaux-beating rates every time, in every country.
Stung by hefty insurance when picking your car hire up? Let me guess, you booked cheap car hire, turned up and they fear-sold you into paying 10 euros a day extra for car hire excess insurance? It happens all the time. The way round it is to get a standalone policy before you go (you can even get an annual policy to cover the whole year's hire). To find the cheapest, use www.moneymaxim.co.uk. Full help on cutting costs in www.mse.me/carhire. Run up card debts on your holiday you can't pay off in full? It's never a good idea, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If you can't clear the debt this month and you're paying hefty interest, then ensure you do a balance transfer to slash the cost, so your repayments clear the actual debt not just service the interest. Full help and best buys at www.mse.me/bts. Check your passport and EHIC sell-by dates now. Thousands were hit by passport office delays this year, causing some to miss their breaks. If your passports nearly at renewal, do it now while you've plenty of time before you next go (you’ll get the extra months added on). It's one less thing to sort, and once it's done, you're good for the next ten years. While you're at it, check the 'valid by' date on your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - if it goes before your next holiday renew it now. The big rule for renewing though is DONT GOOGLE - for both these, imposter sites unnecessarily charge you more than you should pay. Instead the official sites to use are www.gov.uk/ renew-adult-passport and www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/ Healthcareabroad/EHIC.
Check the PAO number on your suncream before throwing it away. The period after opening (PAO) number will be on the bottle - many are safe to use up to 18 months later, provided they're stored right - so don’t chuck it unnecessarily. Got Euros, dollars or even colón left over from the summer? Changing currency back is very expensive, especially for small amounts. So if it's a country you'll revisit even in a couple of years, it's likely best to hold onto it (worth

Naturally good...
CURRIED CELERIAC SOUP WITH PARSNIP CHIPS Ingredients for 6 servings: 2 medium sized celeriac (celery root) ½ a white or yellow onion (diced) 2 sticks of celery (diced) 1 clove garlic (minced) 50 g unsalted butter 1 litre vegetable stock 250 ml double cream 1 tsp medium curry powder Pinch of smoked paprika Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 small parsnip 6 tbsp. crème fraiche
Method: 1. Use a sharp knife to remove the rough outer skin of the celeriac and then wash to remove any dirt. 2. Cut the celeriac into 1 inch cubes and place into a large heavy bottomed saucepan along with the diced onion and celery and cook on a medium heat with the butter for approximately 5 minutes without allowing it to color. This helps to release the flavors of the vegetables. 3. Next add the vegetable stock and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until all of the vegetables are tender. 4. While the soup is cooking add the curry powder and paprika. 5. Once the vegetables are fully cooked remove the pan from the heat and use a stick blender to puree the soup until thick and creamy. At this point stir in the cream and taste the soup for seasoning, make sure you add the right amount of salt and pepper to help bring out the flavors of the soup. 6. If you like your soup a little spicier, then add some more curry powder. 7. To make the parsnip chips peel the parsnip and then use a vegetable peeler to slice the parsnip into thin long strips, deep fry in hot vegetable oil for 2 minutes until crispy and then drain onto paper towels and season with a little sea salt. 8. Place the soup back on the stove for a couple of minutes to make sure it’s piping hot. 9. To serve spoon the soup into bowls and then drizzle with a generous spoonful of crème fraiche and top with a sprinkling of parsnips crisps and freshly chopped parsley or micro shoots.

If looks could kill then you’ve got no worries if you drive the Hyundai i30 Tourer. Put it this way; the car’s practical, but it’s no oil painting. Harsh of me? Probably. And let’s face it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It doesn’t look like a bulldog chewing a wasp, but it has a bland, characterless presence – especially from behind. The ‘face’ of the South Korean produced model is only saved by the smart LED daytime driving lamps. Enough of my shallow thoughts about the i30’s appearance, let’s take a deeper journey into what the motor is all about. Like its slightly older hatchback sibling, the latest generation Hyundai i30 Tourer, launched two years, offers excellent levels of comfort, refinement and efficiency. What’s more, the car adds a greater load-carrying capability to the i30’s overall package. Space is amongst the best in the class, with the Tourer boasting a larger luggage capacity than the majority of its key rivals. But who’s it aimed at? Well, the i30 Tourer is able to meet the demands of both retail and fleet customers as it offers versatility along with a range of clean and fuel efficient engines. Running costs are also low, not only compared with the older pre-2012 i30 Estate, but with major competitors too. There is a choice of two engines in the range, with motorists able to choose either the 120PS petrol unit, or alternatively the 1.6 CRDi diesel in the form of a 110PS or a higherpowered 128PS variant. Both engines are coupled to a sixspeed manual or automatic transmission. The car on test here is the flagship ‘Style Nav’ 1.6 CRDi 128PS version, with a manual gearbox.
Like the hatchback, the i30 Tourer comes specified with a generous list of standard features. The catalogue of kit includes: Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition, multi -function steering wheel and air conditioning, body coloured door handles and mirrors, along with those aforementioned LED daytime running lights.
The range-topping Style Nav model adds touch screen navigation plus a rear view parking camera. It also has alloy wheels - and luxury touches such as cruise control with speed limiter, parking sensors, electric rear windows, climate control and a leather steering wheel and gear knob. Slip behind the wheel, and there are no major complaints apart from the lack of a lumbar support adjustment. That said, the seats are moulded nicely and it’s easy to achieve a good driving position. The binnacle houses clear and simple dials and the car’s fuel gauge takes forever to shift from full. It’s just a shame some cheap looking cabin plastics are in keeping with the car’s unexceptional exterior. The touch screen navigation system isn’t that intuitive and therefore frustrates, but, like all things, once you get the hang of how the gadgetry works, it’s fine. There’s more technology to spice things up on the steering wheel too. Unlike the satnav, there’s a simple button you can push that changes the steering feel from normal to sporty. I kept it in ‘sport’ mode because in an otherwise bland, albeit practical and efficient vehicle, it offers a welcome spark of dynamism to the drive.
