Daichi, The Dashing Dude, our beloved campervan took us out this month and we had a great trip around the Isle of Purbeck! It was a fantastic day and you can read all about it inside. It certainly is good to be able to travel and have some family fun. We do hope you have been able to do the same. Since many of us have had summer holidays abroad cancelled, are you (like us), looking at the house and garden to see what needs mending, improving or changing? Taking the sting out of nettles Thanks to their sting and vigorous growth, stinging nettles are muchmaligned by many gardeners and visitors to the countryside. But it has not always been this way. Historically, nettles were an important source of food, and they were also put to a great variety of other uses. They were used as an analgesic, an animal feed supplement, dye, cloth, and food wrap for cheese, fish, and meat. Even today you can find nettle listed as a key ingredient on the supermarket shelves on anything from shampoo, to cheese, to beer! Young nettle tops (picked from early spring to early summer) really are delicious. Steamed or simmered, like any green vegetable, the taste and texture of cooked nettles is similar to spinach and they can be substituted for it in any recipe. Full of vitamins and minerals, particularly iron, nettles are a cheap and readily available “super-food”. True to the old adage, you just need a firm grip (or gloves!) to avoid the stinging hairs when you pick them, and the cooking process will do the rest so you can enjoy their taste and goodness without worrying. You will need to pick a lot of leaves as, just like spinach, they reduce in volume when cooked. Only pick the young leaves at the top of the plant before it has gone to seed. Stinging nettles support at least 40 different species of insect, including some of our favourite and familiar butterflies. Peacock, red admiral, small tortoiseshell, comma and painted lady butterflies all have caterpillars whose only, or main, source of food is the nettle.
These caterpillars, along with the aphids and other insects that feed on nettles, sustain our woodland and garden birds throughout the spring and early summer. Later in the year, small, seed-eating birds including chaffinches, bullfinches and house sparrows all benefit from the thousands of small seeds that each nettle plant produces. As well as giving these direct benefits to wildlife, nettles can be used by gardeners in the know to make their own nitrogen-rich nettle fertiliser. Simply half fill any watertight container with nettles, top it up with water, give it an occasional stir, and wait! After a few days it will start “brewing” – try adding some rosemary to offset the offensive smell. After three or four weeks of bubbling, strain off the solids to the compost heap and dilute the remaining liquor at one part nettle fertiliser to ten parts water, and your garden plants will love it! Step Up For 2,500-Mile Charity Challenge Wessex Cancer Trust is inviting supporters to step up for its 2,500-mile challenge - by walking the distance between its support centres 20 times - at Walk for Hope 2020. The cancer charity’s flagship fundraising event, which was due to be held in the New Forest in June, returns in a different format this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday 6 September, walkers will come together virtually to clock up the target mileage as a team by completing 20 laps of a route which links the charity’s four support centres in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. You can do your bit by signing up to walk five, ten or 20 miles, and you can do it on your own or with friends and family, at your own pace and wherever you choose. Charlotte von Sicard, Wessex Cancer Trust’s regional community manager, said: “Many of our Walk for Hope participants have or have had cancer, so although social distancing measures are easing, we know it’s still a really anxious time for some people and we didn’t feel it would be responsible to plan for a large gathering. Even though our walkers can’t be together physically this year, we’re still all in this together, so Walk for Hope is the perfect way to unite and work as a team to cover 2,500 miles! Last year 300 people took part and together they raised £50,000 which has made a huge difference to the lives of local people. Please help us to complete 20 laps
around our support centres and make 2020 the biggest and best Walk for Hope yet!” King of the Jungle and Wessex Cancer Trust’s patron, Harry Redknapp, said: “It’s been a tough few months for everyone, but cancer doesn’t stop and throughout the pandemic Wessex Cancer Trust has kept its services going for anyone who needs it. This is despite not being able to raise money by holding outdoor events. Walk for Hope is normally its biggest fundraiser so it would be fantastic to see as many people as possible out walking in their local areas. As the year begins a new phase of life, Hampshire’s already fascinating history continues to write new chapters. From inspiring the mind of the literary genius who brought Lord of the Rings to millions of avid readers to an interesting connection with William the Conqueror, here’s five more quirky facts that have already been written in the county’s story.

Did you know that William Gilbert Grace, arguably one of the most important and talented cricket players in history, once played a game in Appleshaw? The cricket legend was not only considered one of the very best players of the sport but was also fundamental in improving the game and applying different rules and even is said to have been one of the wealthiest cricket players despite being classed as an amateur. Have you seen the statue of King Alfred in Winchester? Also known as Alfred the Great, the king of England played an important role in the early heritage of England and indeed of Hampshire. The statue was well placed in its home at Winchester, however despite the grandeur that is seen today, the structure had less than a kingly entrance. Rumour has it that as the grand pillar upon which King Alfred now stands was in fact placed upside down. Some with eagle eyes have noticed that the pillar is noticeably wider at the top than at its base, adding belief that the pillar was indeed placed the wrong way. Nevertheless, King Alfred still stands proud, no doubt fondly overlooking his old home of Winchester.

As well as being a glorious Tudor mansion and former palace, the Vyne, located in Basingstoke, has a history of welcoming visitors whether they be royal guests or perhaps those with slightly humbler origins. One such visitor was J.R.R Tolkien who is said to have been inspired to write his famous Middle Earth stories by a particular Roman ring that had been uncovered in a field in the county. Tolkien had been welcomed to the house by the then current owner to comment on the find and its interesting inscription which spoke of a curse being put upon a man who had stolen the ring.

THE VYNE Interestingly, Hampshire played a little-known role in the announcement that World War I had begun. The man who journeyed to the capital to make the memorable announcement was Sir Edward Grey and he had a country retreat at Itchen Abbas used predominantly for fishing. He would frequently visit Hampshire and was, in fact, a keen fisherman himself and even wrote a book on the subject, no doubt inspired by his experiences in Hampshire. It was at Itchen Abbas, in the beginning of August in 1914, that Sir Grey would spend the night prior to going to London to make what would be one of the most important announcements in British history.

Another interesting snippet from Hampshire’s history comes from Fareham Creek. Aside from being one of the most picturesque areas in the town, it was

also said to have been the very site that William the Conqueror’s army landed and marched onwards to the important Saxon base in Winchester which was of course, then capital of the whole country. Of course the Saxons were noble and experienced warriors who had already endured much threat from invasion however, as the Norman conquest would testify, the rest is history.

On Your Plot If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very sa sfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is ini ally followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courge es and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very o�en they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same me. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long me before you are harves ng fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a li le planning and now is the me to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been li�ed and le� to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or ghts, also work if you don’t fancy plai ng. Another op on, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courge es can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what be er gi� than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how li le informa on there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful li le book, that deals with just this ques on is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed. with informa on about how to store just about anything and a great addi on to any gardeners library.

The Hampshire Publications Camper Van As a family we have always loved “Treasure Trails, the fun way to explore”. Looking on their website www.treasuretrails.co.uk Daichi found an ideal one, as he could literally join in the fun too. This trail was a drive / walk expedition to recover a father and son who had gone missing while exploring some of the old ball clay mines! Of course, that was fictional, but don’t tell Daichi as he really thought he was being a detective for the day. It was perfect - 20 miles searching for clues around our wonderful Isle of Purbeck. Daichi was up early, roaring his engine, picnic packed and coats at the ready just in case. It was windy but bright. Let’s get those clues and save the day! Now, did you know that the name ‘ball clay’ came about as the clay was extracted by hand and during the transportation the large cube corners become rounded. There are many Ball Clay Mines on the Isle of Purbeck. Also, did you know that Wedgewood bone china, the world’s finest china, is renowned to have a secret ingredient… and that secret ingredient is Purbeck Ball Clay? Shush…. Don’t tell anyone!

Daichi admires the church at Knowlton Our first destination, hiding our first clue, was in the picturesque village of Church Knowlton. Tiny, with an idyllic thatched cottage and a Church that instantly throws you back to bygone days of village life and farming. There is something about that lifestyle, hard graft, but long and flowing dresses worn on a Sunday for Church with children running around mischievously, that I find rather appealing. Daichi was dazzled with the beauty and serenity. We found clues in the Church graveyard and as I also have a rather odd fascination with reading very old gravestones, this was right up my street. Or should I say headstone? Daichi’s engine shuddered as we moved to our next clue which was at the entrance to the Margaret Green Animal Rescue Centre. What an incredible village. Treasure Trails is a process of elimination. This one had 21 clues with 21 locations the father and son could be. Stephen, myself and Hayden like to have a game between us, where we guess at the start what the answer is. There is a prize if one of us gets it right! It all adds to the anticipation, as we eliminate the clues one by one.

23 This was a trail, not only of clue finding, but also of discovery and learning. We discovered the memorial of The Creech Barrow Seven, who were seven local men ready to defend their country in the second World War. We learned that Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books went to Durnford School in this area and that he was allegedly inspired by a real-life spy, John Bond, an ancestor to the Bond family who lived at Creech Grange House on our route. The family’s motto, inscribed in Latin on a wall there, is “The world is not enough” which of course is the title to James Bond’s 21st movie. The picturesque estate was sold for around £3.5 million a couple of years ago. Nice. We drove passed Tyneham, the lost village, which is a whole story in itself and one for another day. Passed the Springfield Hotel and into the car park of East Holme Farm Shop. Of course, we had to buy some healthy food after ticking off a few more clues, before setting off again. We stopped for lunch overlooking the gorgeous rolling hills. Terrific views and Daichi was so pleased to give us shelter from the wind, so that we could eat, thoroughly enjoy the space and relax in comfort. Oh, this is the campervan life. On to Stoborough where they were several good clues to find. Then up to Stoborough

Cruise ship in Bournemouth Bay Heath National Nature Reserve. Just Beautiful. Magnificent in fact. We went on to discover the Engine Shed, now a listed building which housed the engines of the old Tramway. By chance the owner arrived and we had a chat! The lanes, the countryside, the views here on the Isle of Purbeck really are stunning. What a beautiful county Dorset is. The journey ended at Norden Park and Ride. Norden is such an iconic station and so well preserved. We did not see any trains other than those engines stationed on the tracks, but all that searching, history discovery, picnic and photography meant we had arrived after 6pm on a Sunday. One clue here was tricky to find. It is possible the data had been removed, but by now, with only a few clues left we did an intelligent process of elimination and are pretty sure we knew where Ben and his boy were! Phew I say. None of us had guessed it right at the beginning, but hey, it was a wonderful day. We were all winners. Daichi was in his element and so were we. We ended our expedition overlooking the incredible green hills flowing into the sea at Poole and Bournemouth. Cruise Liners bobbing on the horizon. Just gorgeous. Where will Daichi take us next? STAR GAZING Welcome to the monthly Stargazing Page. Each month I’ll be describing astronomical events that are happening overhead in our beau ful night skies. The majority of them are viewable just by stepping out at the appropriate me and looking up, but some may require a par cular vantage point (e.g. a clear view to the west). A cloudless sky is (usually) required! Some viewings will benefit from using binoculars or a small telescope if you have one, but most observa ons can be enjoyed without either.
Interna onal Space Sta on
The Interna onal Space Sta on (ISS) is usually visible at some point during the night, but o�en at unsociable hours. Unfortunately, at the me of going to press, there were no ‘social’ overhead passes for the month of August. However, mings are subject to change, therefore I recommend visi ng www.heavens-above.com for up-to-date informa on, remembering to set the loca on to Bournemouth. This reliable website has just added a new feature, called, ‘Live Sky View’, which is great for iden fying satellites as they pass overhead, especially the new Starlink satellites that will soon fill our night skies.
Meteor Events The annual Perseid meteor event reaches its peak this year on the night of 12-13th August. Unfortunately, the op mum me to spot most meteors, which is around 2a.m., coincides with a bright Moon. However, some lone meteors and their trails may be spo ed towards the northeast earlier in the evening prior to the moon rising. Nowadays, astronomers tend to avoid the term ‘meteor shower’, instead preferring to use the less roman c but much more realis c term ‘meteor event’. The former tends to raise expecta ons, with many pairs of eyes looking expectedly skyward in the hope of seeing meteors ‘rain down’ on them. Although o�en spectacular, meteor events can be a damp squib, and using the term meteor ‘event’ may help to lessen any disappointment. Mercury In early August, Mercury will be visible for those willing to rise around 5a.m. It will be extremely low on the horizon towards the ENE, and hard to spot in the brightening dawn light. Venus Now shining as the Morning Star, early risers will no ce Venus shining brightly in the east, best seen between 4 - 5a.m. before the sun rises. The view through a set of very good binoculars or telescope during the first week of August will show Venus in a stunning crescent phase. This then gradually increases to a half-moon phase for the remainder of the month.

27 Mars The red planet is rising around 11p.m. and is visible high in the south throughout the night. Saturn & Jupiter Both gas giants are visible low in the south a�er sunset. The pair are joined by the Moon on the 1st and 2nd August, and then again on the 28th and 29th. These two planets will not rise high in the sky so a clear view to the south is required. August is also a great month to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, located within the constella on of Sagi arius (Jupiter and Saturn are currently located within the same constella on and can be used as a star ng point - see diagram). Look for the ‘Teapot’ asterism low to the south. Its spout points towards the galac c centre, which hosts a super massive black hole called Sgr A*, which has a mass equivalent to 4 million Suns. The stars located close to this black hole are so affected by its immense gravita onal pull that they are orbi ng it at a whopping 5co000 kilometres per second! Our own solar system orbits around this central point at 270 kilometres per second. Even at such speeds, if you wished to return to the point in space where you had breakfast this morning, it would take roughly 225 million years to circle back to the same spot! Moon This month’s full moon on August 3rd is tradi onally known as the Sturgeon Moon to some Na ve American tribes, as it coincides with the me of year when sturgeon are abundant in their fishing lakes. August’s full moon also goes by the names Green Corn Moon, Blueberry Moon, and Red Moon.

Did you know? August is a great me of year to spot the ‘Summer Triangle’ asterism. An asterism is a group of stars which make a recognisable shape or pa ern, but do not form an official constella on and it is recognised as a summer asterism, it is visible right through autumn into winter.

Tastes so good... MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
