Cubs, Guides and Explorer Scouts join forces to tackle Himalayan balsam Cubs, Guides and Explorer Scouts from Ashurst, Colbury, Calmore, Brockenhurst, Copythorne and Wellow have joined forces to help stop the spread of Himalayan balsam along the Cadnam River. The youngsters spent three evenings in June and July at Ower, pulling up hundreds of Himalayan balsam plants which have invaded the banks of the Cadnam River, through the New Forest Non-Native Plants Project. Introduced to the UK by the Victorians as an ornamental garden plant, Himalayan balsam has spread rapidly along riverbanks, out-competing our native wildlife. Its seed-pods ‘explode’ when ripe and when the seeds fall into the river they are carried downstream to form large colonies of plants, sometimes reaching an amazing four or five metres in height. Catherine Chatters, the New Forest NonNative Plants Officer at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, is co-ordinating control of Himalayan balsam on behalf of landowners. She was delighted to have help from the 3rd New Forest North (Ashurst and Colbury) Cubs, Calmore Guides,

Brokenhurst Guides, the Magellan Explorer Scouts from Copythorne and the Apache Explorer Scouts from Wellow. Catherine said “the Cubs, Guides and Explorer Scouts worked really enthusiastically and enjoyed piling up the Himalayan balsam into satisfyingly large heaps, whilst making a difference to their local environment”. Pauline Homans, leader of the Ashurst and Colbury Cub Pack said “Himalayan balsam-pulling is great for the children to get involved in as the plants are easy to recognise and fun to pull up.” The control of Himalayan balsam along the Cadnam River is part of ‘Our Past, Our Future’, a Landscape Partnership Project which, supported by Heritage Lottery Funding, will restore lost habitats, develop Forest skills and inspire a new generation to champion and care for the New Forest. The Wildlife Trust is organising volunteer work parties to pull up Himalayan balsam along river banks in the New Forest area during Summer 2017. New Forest Art Society News Last year’s annual summer exhibition, held in August, was noted for its high standard and breadth of work for sale and a further autumn two day sale was also successful. These are occurring again this year. Meetings are held most months on the third Wednesday (7.30 to 9.30pm), when a range of artists demonstrated their talents in a wide variety of media. This includes watercolour, pastel, oil, and even how to present and frame the paintings/artwork. These are well supported and enjoyed by members and visitors alike. The society is a social, gregarious group of enthusiasts who welcome new members. Annual membership costs £25 with a reduction of 25% for 16-25 year olds. Visitors are also welcome to the evening meetings for a nominal fee of £4. Lymington Business Owner Donates £10k to Local Charity Hampshire based Boo Charity has hailed as ‘magnificent’ a one-off donation of £10,000 from Leon Crouch, previous owner of Lymington Precision Engineering and current owner of Sea Talk Systems. The donation came at the recent Boo Charity Annual Ball, held at AFC Bournemouth’s stadium. The Ball raised a record £27,000 in total on the night. Leon’s daughter, Louisa Currie-Crouch, has organised a table at the Ball for the last two years, and this year Leon accompanied her and was extremely impressed with the Charity and what it has achieved. The Boo Charity was set up in memory of Sarah Hicks, known as ‘Boo’ to her friends and family, who sadly lost her battle to cancer in 2002. Sarah had travelled to Kenya in search of alternative treatments and was struck by the poverty of the people she met. The Charity was established by Sarah’s husband Russell, to make Sarah’s vision a reality: to help disadvantaged children through the support, care and opportunities to lift them from poverty so that they no longer need to rely on charity. Leon was particularly impressed having met with Elisha Abuonji, Boo’s long-term friend and Kenyan Projects Operations Manager, who was the special guest at this year’s event. Leon commented on how he related to the hard work the team and students were doing in Kenya to the hard work he had put in during his career to enable his achievements. Leon was enthused and humbled by Elisha’s story of Edna, who is running the development of the new Metal Working college program, that Boo have introduced at their Nyamache “Seed of Hope” Centre.
Russell Hicks, the Charities Founding Trustee, was overwhelmed with Leon’s donation: “This means so much to the Charity and is incredibly generous of Leon. We will be directing 100% of the money towards further development of the Metal Working and Fabrication college course with additional equipment and facilities. The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Don’t we just love listening to the young ones talking about their exploits? Well, Nellie is no exception and she loves to hear what Hayden has been up to. Hayden was lucky enough to be chosen to do the ‘Blue Skies’ Programme, through his school. Blue Skies is part of the Jon Egging Trust (JET) which was set up in memory of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, who tragically lost his life while flying in the Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Air Festival in 2011. The Trust realises Jon’s dream of inspiring young people through his love of aviation, teamwork and leadership and it supports young people aged 13-16, to achieve their full potential. This is what Hayden, who is 13, told Nellie… “Joining the group I felt slightly nervous as I didn’t know what it was about, but very excited about going on some special trips that money wouldn’t buy. The first place we went to was MOD Boscombe Down. We saw some planes, went in an olden day hangar and used night vision torches and goggles. It was very exciting. We were also introduced to the concept of Blue Skies which is to

We were challenged with our communication skills here! My favourite trip was when we went to Winchester University. We got to touch a real life 800 year old skeleton. I put its spine together! On a lighter note we were taught how to calculate a skeleton’s age and gender. I learned all about the different bones in the body and that when you are born you have 300 plus bones, but by the time you are an adult they fuse together into 206. After lunch, we looked at some objects that had been excavated and guessed what they were and what year they came from. I really enjoyed that trip!” Hayden said, with a big smile.

27 “Another trip we went to see Nelson’s Ship ‘HMS Victory’ in Portsmouth. It cost £50,834 in those days to build, which is the equivalent of £60 million now! I think that is what she said, it certainly was a lot and more than most people have.” Hayden looked amazed. “The best part was being able to eat in the officer’s mess, as the vessel is still listed as a Navy Ship and still manned. They have nearly replaced every single timber log and plank on the ship, except the strut that Nelson supposedly died on. There is no record of where he actually died but this is where all the clues lead to.” Hayden shuddered. “Apparently the ship’s officers were casually walking up and down the Ship out in the open when a French Musketeer got a lucky good shot at Nelson and hit him in the head. Nelson was the Admiral of the Fleet, not of the Ship itself, so he wasn’t running the ship.” Hayden asserted. “The last trip we went on before the unwanted ending was the ‘Tank Museum’

Nellie’s tinted windows prevented a few scares at Bovington where we finalised our presentations while looking at some very big powerful tanks. We even got to go on the ‘Chieftain’. This tank was created for the Cold War and could fire every 6 seconds compared to the Russian every 8 seconds. The Chieftain was the most powerful tank of its time and quite possibly it still is. I got to sit in the Commander’s seat of the tank!” continued Hayden. “We also got to learn some tank movements with some remotecontrol tanks. This was lots of fun!” “The dreaded day came where we would have to present our speeches that we had created for the sponsors of the Blue Skies and our parents. We were very nervous. Luckily, I had a skeleton to look at instead of the crowd, as I was talking about our trip to Winchester University! Everyone did their speeches and we all got through in the end! Then me and some of the other Blue Skies graduates met up and had fun for the rest of the day. I feel that the Blue Skies programme has helped me to create presentations and help in speaking to crowds. Every one of us has created a team spirit with each other and I feel that we could push each other through anything. I am looking forward to continuing for the next 2 years with the JET and Blue Skies. How lucky am I!”, Hayden proclaimed. Nellie was delighted too. By Debbie Corney

Tastes so good... Risotto
Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?
Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)
1. Heat some oil in a pan. 2. Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic 3. Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened. 4. Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes. 5. Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish. 6. Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. 7. Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

• Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. • If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. • Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. • Keep harvesting those courgettes! • Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage • Strawberry runners that were potted up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now. If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgettes and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a little planning and now is the time to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been lifted and
left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, also work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing! Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how little information there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful little book, that deals with just this question is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything and a great addition to any gardeners library. Happy harvesting!
