Dear Lyndhurst, Bank, Emery Down, Minstead and Bramshaw! Wow! What fantastic weather we have had this year, except of course the flash flooding in some areas. We have been lucky enough to avoid this. Stephen, myself and our ‘roaming reporter’ son, Hayden age 10, had a brilliant day at The New Forest Show. The show jumping horses were just magnificent, the Heavy Horses stood so proud and confident, in all their glory and the guys on the motocross bikes were riveting! We thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, please take a look at Hayden’s photos inside. Did you managed to get there too? The Lyndhurst Directory has an extended reach, and as of this month is now being delivered by Royal Mail, so if you are receiving this for the first time, “welcome” and I do hope you find it interesting as well as useful. The magazine will be delivered to you every two months, so your next issue is October / November. There is an index at the back to help you easily find who you may need to help you in the home, the garden or indeed for you personally. Make a Wild Change Did you know that the time playing outside has dropped by 50% in just one generation? A recent survey also reported that only one in five aged eight to 12 have a connection with nature. This is despite substantial research showing that time spent outside in nature increases happiness, health and wellbeing in youngsters, as well as adults.

In response to this, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is encouraging families to explore the outdoors with the launch of their campaign, Make a Wild Change. Unfortunately, many of us have become preoccupied with technology meaning we spend much of our time indoors, on the internet or watching TV, but children – and adults who spend time outdoors on a regular basis tend to be physically healthier, have better attention spans, can be more confident, creative , confident and less stressed. As the summer holidays approach, this is the perfect time to get outside and have fun with your children. t As an alternative to sandcastles on many of Hampshire’s pebbly beaches, try building a stone tower by balancing smaller and smaller pebbles on top of each other t Grab a bag and gloves to protect your hands. At the strand line along the beach, see what you can find – could include, shells, driftwood, and feathers. Then bring them hope and create something new such as a seaside mobile.

t Use scavenged natural materials to build a home for a native wild creature. Think about what type of home your animal would choose t Make your own binoculars buy taping together a pair of loo rolls which will focus childrens’ attention on the smallest of habitats under a leaf or features across a landscape

t Collect some black berries in a tub and squish them with a stick. Then use the stick to paint the mixture on to some plain white cotton fabric. Leave to dry in the sun. t Get a long rope or a few ropes tied together and a blind fold. Run the rope at waist height around a safe green area. The blindfolded person follows the rope experiencing the trail with their sense. The trust also runs groups across Hampshire called Wildlife Watch for 5 to 15 year olds which are aimed at creating factual, informal, fun ways for children to investigate our natural surroundings. You don’t need to be an expert or have special equipment for a wild adventure, just clothes and shoes that can get a bit muddy and will keep you and your children warm, and a bit of green space that provides children with the freedom to imagine and play. Many of the Wildlife Trust’s reserves and Education centres can be accessed on foot, by public transport and have parking available. Education centres have toilet facilities and some have mobility scooters for hire and accessible paths. Bringing with you a picnic or some snacks for a pit stop is always a good idea too on a wild adventure. Whether you have toddlers or kids on summer holidays, have five minutes to spare or a whole day, you can follow our tips below and make this summer the time when your family made a meaningful connection with nature.

HOPe â€“ Helping Older People in the New Forest, offers a comprehensive Information and Advice service for older people, their families, carers and friends. It often helps just to share a worry, and we can help with a wide range of problems including form filling, benefits such as Attendance Allowance and Carers Allowance, consumer issues, care at home, relationships, care homes and services for older people. HOPe is a local charity set up by local people for local people in 2013. We work with other charities and organisations rather than compete with them, so if we think you can be better helped elsewhere, we will use our knowledge of local services to refer you on. The service is free, completely confidential, impartial and independent. All advisers are trained to deal competently and comprehensively with your enquiries. They will listen with empathy and work with you to reach the outcome you hope to achieve. Confidentiality is one of our most important principles. LEWIS Banking It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but There's a bank account price war. They're desperate for switchers - paying cashback on bills, 5% savings, or just bunging you cold hard cash. Yet just 2% of people have switched in the last year. Unless you're 100% happy with your bank, check now if you can gain. The contest has stretched far beyond traditional banks. Even M&S wants to be, well, the M&S of banking. It’s just launched its first fees-free account. In fact so much so, it’s willing to bribe you with a £100 voucher if you switch. So here’s what you need to know about the best fee-free bank accounts…



The 7-Day Switching system now moves your direct debits and standing orders, closes your old account and ensures payments made to it get forwarded to your new bank - all set up within seven working days. £100 switching bribes galore. If they’ll pay you to switch, unless there’s a compelling reason, grab the cash. Though you'll need to pass the credit check and genuinely switch to get the money….. The new www.marksandspencer.com account gives £100 on an M&S gift card if you switch, one reward point for every £1 spent at the store, a £100 interestfree overdraft and doesn’t require you to pay a minimum amount each month. While decent for regular M&S shoppers, basic rate taxpayers will need to spend £500/mth there for it to beat Halifax and its bank's service is untested compared to First Direct.

In the Raw.. Ingredients 250g cacao butter, shaved with a knife 150g cacao powder 125g dry sweetener, such as xylitol, coconut sugar or raw cane sugar powdered in your Vitamix or a spice mill/coﬀee grinder

DARK CHOCOLATE Method

Healthy and fun with a bit of patience chucked in the bowl...

Place margarine, syrup and sugar in a bowl and mix together. In a medium mixing bowl, in this order, add butter and then cacao butter and powdered sweetener. Bring 250ml water to a boil in a saucepan, reduce heat to low-medium and put the bowl of ingredients on top to melt down. Don’t stir the mix until you start to see some cracks in the surface of the powers or a little pool of butter in the bottom of the bowl. If you have a vita mix, then you will just melt the ingredients about 40%, take the bowl off the pot and wipe the bottom of the bowl so no water drips into your chocolate when pouring into the blender jug. Put the lid on the jug and turn on low speed and then onto high for about 5 seconds. Take the temperature (get yourself a probe thermometer off Amazon) to be sure you are not exceeding 42°c. The object here is to heat and smooth the mixture out, so you don’t want any lumps left by the time you reach 42°c. If you have a normal blender or no blender at all, then you will want to sift your powders before starting and heat the ingredients to 42°c over the double boiler. Once you have reached 42°c it’s time to temper the chocolate. If you’re using the Vitamix, transfer the chocolate to a clean, dry bowl. If using the double boiler method, wipe the bottom of the bowl and pour the mix into a new, clean, dry bowl; the residual heat from the bowl will continue to heat the chocolate otherwise. Using a flexible spatula, gently keep the chocolate moving and scrape the sides of the bowl every 30 seconds - 1 minute. That’s it, you are now in the process of tempering chocolate. Once the chocolate has reached 31.5°c or lower, you can now cast it in a mould or just pour it into a clean, dry plastic container. Tempered chocolate contracts when it sets, so it will easily come out of any mould you cast it in. Pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to set. I would suggest that you not add anything to this batch of chocolate, just leave it plain so you can get the full tempered chocolate experience. Also, if for some reason it doesn’t temper, you can try again or troubleshoot. That’s all. It may seem a little much right now, but you will get the hang of it in no time. If you make a mistake, don’t stress, it’s just chocolate. Don’t look at is as “expensive ingredients going to waste” look at it as a learning experience, a fun hobby, something that makes you happy and therefore nothing else matters! Please note, I suggest that, if you are using moulds to set your chocolate, you start with silicone, as they are easiest to use when you are learning.

The Adventures of Nellie

The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the

23 23 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. Plant of the Month

Attracting birds, butterﬂies and bees, these little ﬂowers which reach 2-3cm in diameter, throw colour out into a garden with a heady mix of reds, whites, purples and a multitude of patterns on top.

The height of the plants, at around 3075cm tall, makes them ideal for borders, rock gardens and informal cottage style planting. Although the origin of the name isn’t conﬁrmed, it is often said that “Sweet William” was used to honour the 18th century Prince William, Duke of Cumberland.

You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

If the dying ﬂowers are left until they form seed pods, the plant thinks its job is done for the year and it won’t bother to produce any more ﬂowers.

When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them oﬀ and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.

However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the ﬂowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the seeds and grow your own

Try it with plants with quite large seeds to start with, like Marigolds or try Aquilega (Grandmother’s Bonnets) or Foxgloves.

They may not grow exactly the same in character and quality as the original plants but it’s great fun to watch the results of your eﬀorts spring into life.
