Dear Lyndhurst! With the better weather we have had recently I am certainly hopeful that this summer we are encouraged to get out and enjoy our local countryside and places of interest, rather than looking to get on a plane to get away from it all! One of our recent acquisitions has been a converted campervan, which not only enables the transportation of the magazines each month, but also gives us an excuse to get out and explore the local area. We will be making regular feature out of this and hope to share some of our adventures with you to give an idea of places that you might like to try yourselves. Inside The Lyndhurst Directory we do of course have our local trades and business people who would love to hear from you. GONE ARE the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes. Volvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable - and the V40 is the latest one. Like all Volvos it is well built but this has a definite athletic appearance about it. From the twin tailpipes to the low profile tyres on 18 inch rims the V40 D4 SE obviously means business. But does it deliver? Absolutely. The 1984cc five cylinder, 20 valve oil-burner churns out 175bhp, so 0-62 comes in a rapid 8.6 seconds. The wide car sits low on the road and takes corners on rails. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and, as with all Swedish-made cars, the seats are ultra supportive on long commutes. The V40 isn’t just about performance and grip though; it also provides enough space for four-up. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids. Of course, safety is never an issue with Volvo and the V40 is no different. It is the safest car in its class, having achieved the highest score ever recorded by EuroNCAP in recent crash tests. This is thanks, in part, to pioneering technologies such as the world's first pedestrian airbag and Volvo's autonomous braking system, City Safety,
which also now qualifies for reduced insurance premiums. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,795.00 V40 D4, on test here, is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 65.7mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don't want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety features". Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest – but you get what you pay for - usually.

New train station nameplates now welcome passengers to the New Forest National Park New nameplates have been put up at rail stations to greet train passengers arriving at New Forest National Park gateway stations. The signs have been installed at five stations by the New Forest National Park Authority to welcome visitors and residents, and to promote the area’s National Park status. The ‘Gateway to the New Forest National Park’ signs can be seen at Brockenhurst, Beaulieu Road, Ashurst, New Milton and Sway rail stations. The New Forest Tour is also promoted on many of the nameplates. The award winning open top bus experience connects with rail stations, making it easy for people to travel to and around the National Park without their car. The nameplates have been funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, a £3.8m grant awarded to Hampshire County Council, the New Forest National Park and South Downs National Park to develop sustainable transport and reduce the impact of traffic in the two National Parks. Nat Taplin, sustainable transport officer at the National Park Authority, said: ‘These new nameplates will remind visitors that they have arrived in a special place. The nameplates highlight onward travel options such as the New Forest Tour and provide an important link in our overall vision to provide an integrated green transport network.’
Forest Tour route, to be launched on 29 June. Passengers can hop on and off where they like, and bring their bikes. All Tours are equipped with a fascinating audio commentary which provide an insight into the rich history of the New Forest, and point out things to see and do along the routes. Recent figures showed the existing red and green routes of the Tour saved an estimated 147,000 private car miles, and contributed an estimated £500,000 boost to the local economy each year. The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation. Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed. Concentrate on salad crops to keep lettuce and radish etc. crisp and don’t worry so much about crops and plants with deeper roots. If you can catch rainwater in
a water butt or large containers, that’s all to the good but don’t be afraid to use washing-up water (we haven’t all got dish washers) and bathwater if it’s not too contaminated by bubble bath and suchlike. Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.

Other attractions include One Man and His Dog, displaying the very best sheep dog techniques, the Pony Club Mounted Games and the stunning Heavy Horse Musical Drive, all of which are on every day of the Show. For the younger visitors, the Forest Fun Factory provides all day activities, shows and games for children of all ages including a circus workshop, entertainers and a gameshow parade. Longdown Activity Farm has an interactive Show Farm for children to get up close and personal with small farmyard animals. The unique Discovery Zone offers children the chance to experience the wonders of the forest including den building and bug hunting and watch the terrier and ferret racing in the Countryside Area or have a go at fly fishing, watch the falconry or see the police sniffer dogs in action. The New Forest and Hampshire County Show are pleased to announce that ticket prices for 2013 are to be held at the 2012 rate for adults and senior citizens. Both children and families will now be able to enjoy cheaper prices with a child ticket falling by 40% from £8.50 to £5 and a family ticket from £46.50 to £43.00. Children under 5 will still be free and it is hoped that these revised prices will allow more people to come to the Show and get involved with the community’s largest event. On top of this, anyone visiting the Show’s website will be able to enjoy an additional 15% off tickets bought online until 11th July 2013. The Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August 2013 at New Park, Brockenhurst and highlights on offer include the Devil’s Horsemen, who will be performing their acrobatics on horseback and also their ‘Roman Chariot Racing’ display which is probably the fastest and most thrilling display of horsemanship you will ever see.
