Hello Lyndhurst! What fantastic weather we have had. It is so good to be able to go out and about for walks easily. How many of you have had early barbecues also? That is a great excuse to get together with family and friends and chill out a bit. Love it! The only problem is the rain, we do need it, so do be a little bit more careful with the use of water. This month as always there are lots of trades people and services to help you around the house, in the garden and for you personally. Hayden, our son did a wonderful power point presentation on the computer this week, all done by himself of The Resurrection. The power point and the story is something they have all been doing at school, and it was very touching. Shetland Pony Grand National Gallops into New Forest Show The New Forest & Hampshire County Show is delighted to announce that the Shetland Pony Grand National will be held at the 2012 Show bringing an exciting spectacle for visitors. For those of you who have not come across this spectacle before, this is a fabulous display of pony racing over miniature steeplechase fences, a high speed dash, a blur of coloured silks, flying manes and tails and the roar of the crowd – the excitement of a day at the races condensed to Shetland Pony style, daily races will be held in the East Ring. This concept was initially brought to life by famous BBC Equestrian Commentator, Raymond Brooks-Ward. Competitors b att l e to q u al i fy at th e Su m m e r Agricultural Shows in order to win a place at the finals held at Olympia, the London International Horse Show in December.

A cut above the rest HAIRDRESSING talents a cut above the rest were showcased during an alternative show involving more than 80 students at The Arnewood in Hampshire. Hairdressing students aged 14 to 19 at the New Milton academy took part in The Alternative Hair Show using recycled materials su ch as mag azin es an d newspapers to create a unique hairstyle, make-up and complementing outfit. Each student had to bring their designs to life – including nails and makeup – within a £10 budget and show how to do this via a story board plan. Inspiration for their designs included characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Lady Gaga, Downton Abbey and Barbie, while the judging panel came from the competitors’ host schools, the local community and industry representatives as well as examination body VTCT.
NVQ manager, Jo Powell, said: “The show attracted more than 200 people and tickets sold out pretty quickly – so much so we could have probably doubled that. We wish we had a bigger venue!” The winning students were awarded trophies and hairdressing equipment. The competition that is staged annually as part of the students’ course but it also is raises funds for charity. More than £300 will this year be presented to the Changing Faces charity as a result.
The finished creations were then modelled by students in a glitzy catwalk show before an audience of p aren ts an d commu n ity guests. “We’ve known about the competition since October so have been able to plan for it and get everything ready we need to make,” said Megan Andrews, 15, “but on the day we only had a few hours to style he hair and pull all our designs together.”

Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Puffs 5 Rhubarb sticks, cut into 3cm pieces 1 Tsp ground cinnamon 3 Tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 5 Tbsp soft brown sugar 1/2 x 500g block puff pastry 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 50g Rolled oats 1. Pre-heat the oven to gas 6/200c/180c. 2. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. 3. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 20x30cm, then cut into quarters and place on the sheet. 4. Rub together the remaining flour and butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs then add the sugar and oats to make a rough crumble mixture. 5. Divide the rhubarb between the pastry quarters, leaving a 1cm rim. 6. Sprinkle the oat mixture over, then fold and pinch each corner to keep the filling in. Bake for 20-25 mins and serve warm.

Lyndhurst and District Community Responders A Community Responder is a member of the public who is a volunteer and is trained by South Central Ambulance Service to respond to certain types of medical emergencies in their own community, pending the arrival of the ambulance. e.g. heart attacks, strokes, falls. You may already have seen us around the village? We have currently five trained volunteers from the local community and have answered over 1000 emergency calls since we were established in late 2003, throughout the villages of Lyndhurst, Minstead, Bank and Emery Down. The New Forest Meddlars is a mixed Morris dance side, formed in 1990 and based in Lyndhurst in the New Forest. We dance mainly in the Cotswold and Border traditions, but vary our performances with new dances, some collected at festival workshops and some we devise ourselves. During the coming winter months, we shall be meeting at the Scout Hut in Romsey Road, Copythorne on Tuesday evenings to practise and to learn new dances. Morris dancing is a great social activity so why not join us. New dancers and musicians are always welcome.
