Ferndown Watch Community Office The Ferndown Watch Community Office is currently closed although we have been given a provisional date for re-opening. This will be on 13 September, we will confirm this when we know more. Some of our staff have left us, moved away or retired by the Police, but we should have enough to operate as before although probably not on Saturdays. We are currently recruiting more volunteers. QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale

Have you seen the Grey Mare and Her Colts? Found near Abbotsbury, this impressive Neolithic structure is actually a tomb - a chambered long barrow in nature which was excavated millenia after it was ﬁrst laid around 3400-2400 BC to ﬁnd some human bones as well as some fragments of pottery. Although there are roughly ten such structures along the South Dorset Ridgeway, the history of the Grey Mare and Her Colts is plain to see and is a fantastic landmark from the county’s ancient history.

Did you know that at one time Horton Tower, built in 1750 by Lord of Horton manor, Humphrey Sturt, was considered to be the tallest folly in the United Kingdom? Standing at more than forty metres tall, there are various possible reasons why the folly was built however popular belief is that Sturt, a local landowner who sat in the House of Commons, had it PHOTO: ROGER VAUGHAN built when he became too old to ride in the hunt as so could watch the event from the building’s fifth floor.

Were you aware that Henry Rawlinson, the 1st Baron Rawlinson who was renowned for being one the leaders of the tragic Battle of the Somme and whose military career has since been condemned by history, was born in Trent at the Manor? Away from the battleﬁeld where he served as a general, Rawlinson was also an avid watercolour artist who once travelled to France to paint with Winston Churchill. Churchill himself was in awe of his talent and commented that, “The General paints in water colours and does it very well”! 8

In 1803, Easton, on the Isle of Portland witnessed shocking events when the village was attacked by British Navy sailors attempting to take men from the settlement for recruitment. The marines landed on the ﬁrst of April 1803 and press ganged some men however when they came the second day, the villagers were wise of their plans and would not let the men be taken. Tragically, the captain ﬁred his guns, his marines following suit resulting in the death of three local men and the later death of a woman and also caused several injuries. Although tried for murder, the captain and his men were aquitted and yet the villagers actions prevented the men from being taken from Easton.

Dorset is proud to boast many organic farmers however, did you know that one of the oldest organic farms in the county dates back more than 60 years? Tamarisk Farm, based in West Bexington, was founded by Arthur and Josephine Pearse whose daughter Ellen now runs the farm. Interestingly the farm was largely organic before such titles and grading even existed. Amazingly, the descendants of the shire horses who worked on the farm are now used by the current owners to ride to survey the farm’s 600 acres! ENJOY THIS FEATURE IN EVERY ISSUE!

The name’s Bond...but not for much longer As he bids farewell to every actor’s dream role, we look at the legacy Daniel Craig’s James Bond has left behind. To equate his Bond experiment to the process of the average gymgoer, Daniel Craig is showered, moisturised, halfway towards being dressed and grateful for the occasional glimpse in the changing room mirror… one which flashes back reflections that his 007 persona might casually approve of with a muttered, “good job”. Speculation that the actor was saying his farewell to James Bond has been circling for some years, but now, unequivocally, he is done, as the rather clumsily named No Time To Die hits cinemas. As it does, the 53-year-old emerges with a few things – a life-defining imprint on the CV, a multimillion-pound war

chest, and the knowledge that he has influenced a generation of cinemagoers in refining the definition of the modern-day hero. “I’ve always thought the image of a good actor is someone who leaves the big gestures and sweeping statements for when the cameras are rolling,” he begins. “That should really be the beginning and the end of what we expect of our actors. “I don’t want to be the type who puts himself on a pedestal away from that. What right do I have to comment at length on politics or society or the environment? And why should anyone take any notice of me anyway? I’m an actor!” Back on screen, it has been interesting to see how far removed the modern version of Bond is compared to his immediate predecessors Brosnan and Dalton. And while Connery and Moore never strayed into dadbod mode, they represented an era where Bond smoked, drank and

copulated his way through problems. At the heart of what deﬁnes Bond is, according to Daniel Craig, a good yarn, purely and simply. “Just stick to the old adage that a good story goes a long way…. and blow stuff up every few minutes,” he laughs heartily. “That’s how it’s done.” Yet what makes the man himself is something rather more complex. “If you want it too little – a great body, a great ﬁlm role, a beautiful girl – you won’t get it. Save our Hayloft relaunch campaign The Hayloft is one of Christchurch’s precious jewels – a not for-profit art gallery run by CADArts (Christchurch and District Arts). After twenty years, during which time the Hayloft has welcomed artists of all backgrounds and means to display their artwork and express their creativity, it is possible that this gem in the heart of Christchurch will be lost. The Landlord is looking to sell the property in the immediate future and has offered first refusal to CADArts but unfortunately this forty-year-old charity, made up of hundreds of local arts groups and individual artists, does not have the funds available and is therefore hoping to raise the money by a grant and Crowd Funding. A page was set up at Kickstarter.com and although we raised a substantial amount it did not meet the target, we had set so we do not receive the pledges it raised. Hopefully, all who have originally pledged will support the new campaign. The page will go online later next week and run to the end of September. The Landlord has given us more time to raise the funds to purchase this property and we are therefore relaunching the campaign with a

more achievable figure. We also plan on having some fundraising events – indeed The Little Craft Shack in New Milton have already run an online auction which raised a considerable sum for the project. The Gallery is one of the oldest buildings in Christchurch, originally attached to a farmhouse believed to date back to the pre 1800s. It has become a much-loved arts centre for artists and visitors. To lose it now would be to lose the last individual arts venue in Christchurch and possibly become yet another private dwelling or coffee shop. If we succeed in our goal, we will not only be able to have a centre of operations for CADArts so that we can reboot our offering to the arts scene in Christchurch (and the local Districts), we will also have a shining venue for the next generation of artists to bring soulfulness and creativity to the town. We will strive to show artists young and old, of every background, and those who would not otherwise have the means to hire a gallery space or put on a show.” Additionally, CADArts will plan community events, classes, and workshops in the intimate setting of the Hayloft upstairs which is perfect for bijou crafts.

Talking about Wildlife...

The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. “It’s a scam, you will lose your home, you will get ripped off!” Yes, I have heard all of these comments when discussing Equity Release, and many ‘armchair experts’ tell my clients “don’t do it”! ‘Equity Release’ is a generic term for people who wish to release funds from the Equity/ value in their property and this can be done by various methods such as, a remortgage, a capital & interest or interest only mortgage, a Retirement Interest Only mortgage, a Later life mortgage, a home reversion scheme or a lifetime mortgage. A truly ‘Unbiased’ independent broker will research all the options and advise you on the most suitable to match your requirement, Yes, in the 1980’s these ‘Equity Release’ schemes caused difficulties, when it was assumed that property values would rise each year and that property price inflation would consistently be higher than mortgage interest rates. In the 1980s thousands of retired people were encouraged to take out variable rate mortgages and put their money into stock market-related investment bonds. The income from these bonds was expected to be sufficient to pay the interest on the mortgage and provide additional income. But the market produced poor returns on the bonds as recession arrived, and at the same time interest rates rose and property values fell. Equity Release type mortgages were relaunched in 2007 and a new rules and regulations were brought into force by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) now the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Since then any Adviser who gives advice on ‘Equity Release’ type mortgages must be qualified and hold 2 important qualifications. They are the qualifications CeMAP and CeRER. CeMAP – Chartered Institute of Bankers Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice. CeRER – Independent School of Finance Certificate in Regulated Equity Release and Home Reversion Schemes All Equity Release Plans have to follow the standards set by the Equity Release Council. Firstly the Negative Equity Guarantee, this

means that you CANNOT owe more in capital and interest than your home is worth. You can stay in your home until the last survivor passes on or moves into longterm care and no debt is carried forward to your family. Add to those the Covid 19 issue such as furlough, redundancies and early retirement. YET the one thing that has increased in value will be their home. Hence the saying ‘Property Rich, Cash Poor’ so why struggle financially when you may be sitting on hundreds of thousands of pounds in property value. So what is an Equity Release Lifetime mortgage? It is simply a mortgage, which you do NOT have to make repayments on. The Interest is added to the mortgage amount and when the last surviving owner of the home ‘passes on’ then the executor/beneficiaries have up to 12 months to sell the property at full market value. The mortgage and interest is then repaid. You can repay interest if you wish, either as a fixed

monthly interest only repayment or opt for a plan where you can repay lump sums per annum on an ad hoc basis.

Broker Fee, All Equity Release MUST be arranged through a Qualified ‘Equity Release’ Adviser. Broker fees can vary considerably. For example you will have seen on their TV adverts that Age Solutions and Age Partnership charge 2.25% and Key Retirement who charge 1.99% with minimum fees of £1695.

Equity Release mortgage Interest is on a fixed for life basis. The funds released can be taken as a Lump Sum Only or a Lump sum with a Cash Reserve Drawdown account, which works like an overdraft facility, you have access to the reserve and can take amounts from that facility at any time different lenders have different minimum amounts. There are NO restrictions on what you spend the release funds on, holidays, cars, home improvements, debt consolidation, helping family, redeeming existing mortgages. The Equity Release Lifetime Mortgage is very flexible and offers the opportunity to transfer the equity to a new property, you can downsize, repay all or part of the mortgage and also release more funds later on as both you and your property get older! Another important issue is that some people believe that by releasing Equity that the compound interest that ‘Rolls up’ will erode all the remaining Equity in your home. I always complete a Property Growth Projection Versus the Interest Roll up so that my clients can see that this is NOT the case. You need to be very aware of fees. There are fees with any Equity Release product. Valuation Fee, as I am an Elite member of the Answers in Retirement Club I can usually arrange that my clients receive a FREE valuation. Lenders arrangement fee, (some lenders charge a fee, usually from £5 to £995 and this can be added to the mortgage) Legal Fee you can use your own solicitors or we can recommend an Equity Release legal specialist, their role is to redeem any existing mortgage or secured loans, add the new mortgage details on to the Land Registry,

With the skies now noticeably darker after the long summer evenings we can look forward to seeing Jupiter and Saturn, a Harvest moon, and a fox loose in an aviary! International Space Station This ISS is visible in the early hours of each morning until the 12th. From the 16th onwards sightings are at much more respectable times ranging from 7pm to 10pm. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to specify your location. Events The Autumn Equinox is on 22nd September, and marks the first of two dates (the second being the Spring Equinox) when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth. The term equinox originates from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’. The Autumn equinox marks the point at which days become shorter than nights. Mercury & Mars Both planets are difficult to locate this month. Venus Venus is also very low in the west and quite hard to spot, vanishing below the horizon by 8.30pm. It is joined by the Moon on the 9th and 10th (see figure), which may help you find it. Jupiter and Saturn Both gas giant planets are visible throughout the night, and although not reaching great heights in the sky they stand out magnificently as they are currently in an area with few bright stars. Jupiter on the left is the much brighter of the two. The moon is close by between 16th – 18th.

At this time of year the southern night-sky consists of faint, watery-themed constellations such as Capricornus (the sea goat) and Aquarius (the water-bearer). Fortunately, much higher in the sky lies a lovely, bright asterism (a familiar pattern of stars) that is visible well into the winter despite its name, the Summer Triangle. The three corners are marked by the bright stars Vega, Deneb and Altair. This part of the sky is dominated by avian-themed constellations, and the triangle can be thought of as a type of aviary. Altair is in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle, whilst Deneb is in Cygnus the Swan. Both birds have mythological origins relating to the Greek God, Zeus. The third star, Vega, is in Lyra, the lyre, which is often depicted in ancient texts as being carried by a swooping bird, such as a vulture. Many of the named objects in this part of the sky derive from the Arabic words for parts of a hen, with stars named after the tail, feathers, wings and beak. To complete the setting, the central dim constellation of Vulpecula, the little fox, was originally known as ‘the fox with the goose’; in old star charts the fox was often depicted with a goose in its mouth. We therefore have in this part of the sky the rather unfortunate example of a fox loose in the hen house!

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architect looks ahead to some design trends that might rise to prominence over the next few years. I get asked a lot about future design trends and initiatives, and the truth is I wouldn’t know what a trend was if it hit me in the face! Over the years I’ve come to regard trends as very lucid, irregular things – they come about quickly, are mixed and remixed, then disappear out of nowhere; and with interior design that can be problematic given the semipermanency of how we furnish our homes. It’s not like saying ‘this pair of trousers are out of fashion this year; I’ll wear a different pair tomorrow’. If you’ve added wood panelling to every wall in your home, it’s going to take a while to ﬁx. What I will say is what happens at the beginning of every century in design and

architecture is that people stop and look back at the last century and say, ‘oh my God, we didn’t get any of that, quick, let’s have some’, and you get this rush of building and design and furniture which is kind of retro – we’ve seen it over the past decade or so with a complete craze for anything vintage from 1930-90s. It’s fair to say we’re always looking forward as far as home design goes, both

architecturally and in the patterns and designs within. If I had to put money on a style or theme over the next couple of decades, it would be eco-based. We’re seeing a real retune to very natural, sustainable materials - basic stuff. Yet also, thanks to changes in technology and the way that

we design, often using iPhones, we can survey and model things really cheaply now. So that means we are going to see all manner of goods – from home products right through to personal stuff like shoes – made not in some factory in Germany, China or Portugal, but in a shop round the corner from where you live using really sophisticated 3D printing techniques. Certainly, a look into the future is a view back towards bespoking our homes in our own design. The era of the IKEA mass-market products has helped us a lot, but technology is now freeing us to style our homes in much more personal ways. It will mean we can turn back into being a nation who make things for ourselves, in a bespoke way, which I think is a very exciting future.

Understanding Investments: Planning to retire within the next ten years? For many people, life is an act of juggling competing financial demands. However, this can often change between forty-five and fifty-five when children may have grown up and become financially independent, debts including the mortgage have been reduced or cleared and you are in your peak earning years. This is when thoughts may turn to the next major change in your life, retirement! Realising there are only ten years or less to maximise savings, clients often tell me it’s time to “get serious” about financial planning and want to ensure they retain and save as much of their earnings as possible and minimise the tax they pay. They also want to understand “how much is enough?” and have a plan to enable them to retire at a time of their choosing. I have listed below some of the key information required to help create a plan. 1. Understand what loans (including mortgage) are outstanding, what interest is being charged and when loans are due to be repaid. It is important to be debt free at retirement, albeit there are several ways to achieve that depending on your personal tax situation. 2. Obtain a state pension projection to understand what you will be entitled to and when. This can be obtained online via the Government website and will be a valuable source of inflation-protected income at the state pension age. It is possible to top this up with lump sum payments if you haven’t been credited with the full thirty-five years of National Insurance contributions. 3. Obtain projections from any Defined Benefit Pensions. These can also provide future inflation-protected income and the date they are due to commence will vary depending on scheme rules. 4. Quantify your personal assets which include cash, investments, and property.

Understand what your investments such as ISAS Howard Goodship and Pensions are invested in and to what level of risk they are exposed to. Is this too low or too high or just right, based on when you plan to retire. Do your pension plans allow full pension freedom flexibility in the way you can access income in retirement (Flexi-Access Drawdown, UFPLS, Annuities)? Once you understand your current position, you need to quantify how much you will need to have accrued by the time you want to retire. Often people want to retire before the state pension age or need more income than the state provide, so how do you save enough to meet those gaps? What is the most tax-efficient way to save? Any financial plan also needs to incorporate inflation -for example inflation at 3% per annum means expenses in retirement could double every twenty-four years. We utilise specialist cash-flow tools to answer all these questions and help clients plan for their retirement. Once in retirement, we help them maximise their lifestyles by showing them whether their retirement “wish-list” is affordable and if so, encouraging them to do things whilst they are fit and able. Were you an avid fan of this Iconic, now internationally renowned British show, in the late 60’s and 70’s? Back in the day this BBC sitcom reached 80 million viewers an episode and with nine series and 80 episodes in total there was a lot to laugh about. I had booked these tickets more than 18 months ago, well before any Lockdown, or hint of international adversity, so you can imagine the crowd, the audience, all seated and eagerly anticipating the

Daichi at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne cast’s appearance. When the tannoy announcement welcomed us all back to a “live show”, there was the best cheer I have heard for a long time. The audience was ready. Oh what excitement, oh what a buzz. We were there. We were with the characters. We were on that stage. Fortunately, metaphorically speaking, as the actors themselves were well rehearsed, and I am sure, as eagerly anticipating their performances as we were to watch them. We were all back together. I have been in plays (a few years ago now…) at school, and I take my hat off to these ambitious individuals, not professionals, but ‘ordinary local people’ with working lives and families to support, who work tremendously hard to put on a fully professional show. We salute you! “Don’t Panic!” You did a FANTASTIC job. You were all so in character and fully entertained us. Dad’s Army, as many of you will absolutely know, is situated in a fictional South England seaside town of Walmington-on-Sea, where the Home Guard platoon, manned by volunteers, is on watch. programme based a lot of what he wrote on his own experiences in the Local Defence Volunteers. Did you know that his mother did not like him being out late at night and worried that he would catch a cold, and as such the character of Private Pike is actually based on himself? How funny is that. The play started with “The Deadly Attachment” and the capturing of a German U Boat Captain and his crew. The unfearing, cantankerous Captain Mainwaring, a bank manager by trade, orders soggy fish and chips for them, much to the German captors’ displeasure. It is good-old British humour at its best. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Followed by a scene from “Mum’s Army” in which Captain Mainwaring has a wandering eye and takes a fancy to Mrs Gray. It is such a shame that many of our great British lines and innuendos are disallowed and frowned on these days. In my opinion we have one of the best senses of humour on the planet and are able to laugh at ourselves in a healthy way. It is very therapeutic. After the much-loved ice-cream interval break, came “The Godiva Affair” where poor Mr Mainwaring watches his wife cavorting ‘naked’ through the streets (actually in a full cream body suit, but fortunately it was only left to the imagination…), as she poses as Lady Godiva in a fund-raising carnival parade. As my Dad would say, “You couldn’t

Great hilarity in “the office” write it, could you, Deb!” Well, Jimmy Perry and David Croft did - and oh did we all laugh! “The Floral Dance” was the final scene and as the actors gave us their departing lines, and the curtains slowly started dropping we were all smiles and clapped and cheered to our hearts delight. Eleven of us from Modern Magazines had gone to watch this fantastic ‘blast from the past’, literally from ages 17 to 80, and all of us had a fabulous evening. “Project Play” who produces these incredible shows does a great job managing and creating them. Matthew Rock, the Director and Producer, is ever grateful to all the local people who act and spend hours of their time rehearsing, the stagehands who create each scene throughout the show, the dress makers, makeup artists and the whole team which it takes to put on such a production. Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration; and this month, as autumn works its way into our outdoor spaces, Alan Titchmarsh explains why variety is the spice of life, even in the garden! With the approach of autumn, at the moment we’re going through that phase where the colours and the shapes are changing. There’s sometimes a sadness when you realise summer is coming to an end, and the leaves certainly seem to be falling earlier this year. My advice though is to embrace the new season and really go after all the potential and possibilities that it holds. After all, we’re actually very lucky in Britain – where plants are concerned we can afford ourselves a different favourite every month; snowdrops in January, daffodils in February, tulips in March and so on. People tend to associate autumn with brown and orange tones, and a rustling underfoot; but it’s about much more than

that. One of the most exciting times is when you wake up on a certain day and you can just smell the fact the season has arrived. It’s something in the air - a kind of sourness, a tang that lingers. You can smell things just beginning to decay, but it’s in a way that is replenishing, stimulating and invigorating because it means things are turning and new possibilities are around the corner.

look at the lovely ferns it’s now growing. Next, perhaps start autumn with a tidy-up of borders, or a clean out of the greenhouse, or perhaps even renew a few tools. Also consider getting your compost boosted with all those leaves suddenly in abundance. And ﬁnally, invest in some evergreens to offer texture and volume in areas of the garden that might start looking a little sparser. Mostly though, look forward to the coming change and admire nature’s versatility. There is tremendous colour still around us, and where the leaves have descended, look at the skeletal, artistic majesty of trees.

So as autumn arrives I would offer the following bits of advice. Firstly, hold on to the last bits of colour and savour them. Next, enjoy what’s there - perhaps you have some raspberries or any number of the late-ﬂowering varieties such as Cyclamens, Begonias, and of course, Crocuses. Also see how your garden is evolving – sure, that asparagus bed is no longer cropping, but

The new Specialist Nurse, Katrina Bottle (pictured left), has been partly funded by Talbot Village Trust through Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity to provide a point of contact for the families of over 500 children and young people with epilepsy in the local area. Katrina’s role is helping to deliver local families with support, advice and education on how to manage their children’s condition at home and in their day-to-day life. Katrina works closely with the second Roald Dahl Epilepsy Specialist Nurse at Poole Hospital, Sophie Fitzwalter - together they are strengthening their epilepsy service to support the increased need in the local area. The Talbot Village Trust’s funding enabled this additional Epilepsy Specialist role to be created and has provided a lifeline for many local families, with a number stating that their anxiety has been alleviated under Katrina’s care. Families have also noted feeling safe in the knowledge that she will arrange all hospital-related appointments, allowing the families to focus on spending quality time together. Louise Griew, Chief Executive of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, said: “In the last year we have continued to establish Roald Dahl Specialist Nurse posts across the UK with 82 nurses providing support for over 21,000 seriously ill children. We would like to thank the Talbot Village Trust for their generous support as Katrina becomes a vital part of the community in Poole, helping children with epilepsy.”

Katrina is at home laughing with Will whilst talking about practicalities, she’s visiting him when he’s on the ward, she’s calling to check in on the family, she’s just amazing and so are Talbot Village Trust for allowing this to happen through their donation.” Sir Christopher Lees, Chairman of the Talbot Village Trust, added: “We could not be prouder of the Talbot sisters’ legacy, especially when we fund causes like Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity that completely change lives, it’s an incredible feeling. Thousands Enjoy Shake & Stir Festival’s Triumphant Return Shake & Stir Vintage Festival returned to Southbourne last weekend, with thousands of visitors flocking to attend, including the Mayor of Bournemouth who opened the event. As always, the festival celebrated all things vintage, with fashion workshops, local traders, and live music performances. After its three-year absence, the festival has been welcomed back with enthusiasm. This weekend saw Shake & Stir return to delight visitors for the seventh time, drawing crowds of almost 20,000 people over the two days. Vintage lovers, classic car enthusiasts, Southbourne locals, and holiday makers gathered to enjoy the live music, car displays and vintage fashion. This year, for the very first time, the live music included the sound of the 70s, with local band The 79 bringing back Blondie and other hits from the decade. There was also music from earlier decades, with performances from The Fifinellas and Retro Rita, as well as Jitterbug dance classes, keeping the vintage feel the festival is famous for. Fan favourite DJ Dave and the festival’s headliners, Earl Jackson & Stompin’ Dave, also delighted the crowd, with Earl Jackson and Stompin’ Dave even stepping in with a truly memorable, improvised second set at the last minute.

Mandy Polkey continued: “We faced a lot of challenges trying to organise the festival this year and I’m delighted we managed to overcome all the obstacles and throw an absolutely wonderful party. It has only been possible thanks to the hard work of all our team members, volunteers and sponsors, so a huge thank you to everyone involved. Luscious Lamb Moussaka Introduction

Colder evenings call for warming comfort food such as this satisfying moussaka. Serve with a fresh green salad or even just a crusty baguette to mop up the rich sauce.

Ingredients 500g lamb mince 2 aubergines (sliced crossways) 4 large white potatoes (peeled and sliced) 1 onion (diced) 1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp tomato purée

and then rinse them thoroughly before patting dry with kitchen towel. Oven bake as instructed. • Dish can be made ahead by covering your layered moussaka with cling ﬁlm and storing it in the fridge. When ready to bake, simply cook for ﬁve minutes longer in the oven.

2 garlic cloves (minced) ½ tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground oregano 150ml beef stock For the béchamel sauce 40g butter 40g ﬂour 500ml milk 80g grated cheddar or parmesan Pinch of salt and pepper

Top Tips • If you are concerned about the aubergine being bitter – the fresher the aubergine the less chance of this there is – simply place your raw slices in a colander with a pinch or two of salt, leave for 10 minutes

Method Step One Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lay your potato slices on one baking tray and your aubergine discs on another with a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, put the lamb, onion, garlic, oregano, and cinnamon in a large frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Once browned, add the chopped tomatoes, beef stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook over a high heat for 4-5 minutes until the ragù

Add half the grated cheese and simmer the sauce gently for 4–5 minutes, stirring regularly. Season with salt and pepper. Step Three Add the potato slices to an oven-proof dish in a single layer. Spoon over a layer of lamb ragú and top this with a layer of aubergine slices. Repeat once more before pouring over the béchamel sauce and topping with the rest of the grated cheese. Bake the moussaka for 35-40 minutes until it is golden and bubbling.
