Dear Ferndown & West Parley, Wow, what a summer of events we have all had. Hasn’t it been great! We here at Dorset Publications and The Ferndown & West Parley Directory were part of the Drug Free World campaign where we sponsored 1000’s of Truth About Drugs booklets given out in Weymouth during the Olympics and also at the Bournemouth Carnival. You can see some of our photos inside. The Jive Aces, the UK’s Number One swing band, were our fantastic entertainment for the day! There has also been the famous Bournemouth Air Festival, Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Dorset County Show. Not forgetting last, but by no means least, the completely awe-inspiring Paralympics! I think the summer has ended with a real celebration. Did you notice, as there was much less bad news expressed during the Olympics that the whole of Britain came alive. Maybe we can learn from that. Anyway… Back to school for some now and back to work for the rest of us. Talking about wildlife with
Walk for Wildlife On the 23rd September, join us for the Dorset Walk for Wildlife. This year, this annual fundraising event for walkers of all levels and ages returns to Purbeck by popular demand. There are three routes to choose from, ranging from 6 to 22 miles. They will all start from Leeson House, a beautiful manor house situated in the village of Langton Matravers near Swanage. Each route will lead walkers along the coastline, giving everyone a chance to explore the famous Purbeck area: Dancing Ledge if you choose to walk 6 miles, St Aldhem’s Head if you choose 12 miles and Kimmeridge Bay for those who tackle 22. All walkers will pass through Durlston Country Park with its picturesque views and a castle, so make sure you take a camera! A little further down the road,
walkers will pass Anvil Point Lighthouse, which is built of local stone. For those with children, there will be exciting and educational activities on your return. The grounds of Leeson House will also be open to explore, making this a fantastic day out for the whole family. You can register and start fundraising today. Go online and visit the website dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/ walkforwildlife and you can use the links to set up an online charity sponsorship page. Alternatively, you can download a charity fundraising form. If you plan to walk in a group, you can set up a group page - you can even set one up for your canine friends! WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL The Changing Face of West Parley The old wooden Scout Hut on the Recreation Ground, dilapidated beyond repair, has now gone. It was taken down by volunteers, saving the Parish money. The space will be landscaped to form a little park by the playground and gazebo. At Parley Cross the old and unloved brick shelter has been replaced by a modern bus shelter.
Housing on the Green Belt Residents will be aware of the District Council’s ambitions to build a total of 520 houses in our Green Belt fields at Dudsbury Heights and New Road. These plans will come before an independent planning inspector at a Public Enquiry in mid 2013. Our Parish Co u nc il w i ll be p ro fe ss io n al l y represented and will oppose these plans vigorously. Meanwhile we have used the new Localism Act to submit a Community

New Bus Shelter at Parley Cross
Land Nomination for a 300 metre wide strip of land around the Stour Valley Way footpath on the Dudsbury Heights field. The intention of this is to protect the land for community use.
Volunteers West Parley has pride in its appearance, and our active volunteer teams keep the pavements and hedges trimmed, the grass mowed, the flowers maintained, the litter picked, trees planted, and a clean up programme ongoing at Parley Wood and adjacent paths. This is worthwhile and enjoyable work – fresh air, exercise and new neighbours to meet. We have all ages including 80s taking part. To join, call Alan Macdonald on 01202 571349.

Coffee Mornings These successful gatherings have now been held for 6 months, on fortnightly Wednesdays from 10 to 12, at the Parley Sports Club just down the lane from the Memorial Hall. Next ones on Wed 19 September and Wednesday 3 October. Lots of residents have found this a pleasant and informal way to meet some neighbours and hear what is going on.
Parley Sports Club Do you know about P.S.C.? – if not, time to find out. West Parley’s hidden treasure is tucked away down a lane off Christchurch Road, just behind the Memo rial Hall. It is a v ibrant community meeting place with full food and drink facilities, and home to some very successful local football and cricket teams. On Sunday 26 August the Sports Club, together with the newly formed Parley Rotary, put on a very well attended “Fun Day” – the biggest thing seen in West Parley since our Diamond Jubilee Fete.

Not as daunting as you might expect... Drug Free message at Bournemouth Carnival Stephen and I here at Dorset Publications, publishers of The Ferndown & West Parley Directory, were proud sponsors of the Drug Free World entry at the Bournemouth Carnival. 5,000 “Truth About Drugs” booklets were given out in the streets by more than 25 enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. The Jive Aces, the UK’s No. One Swing Band who recently got into the semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent were our fantastic entertainment and we won first place for the best dressed float! The Jive Aces are internationally known and regularly play at local venues here in the South. They are amazing! You can see them at www.jiveaces.com.
