WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL Housing on the Green Belt The District Council will very shortly be publishing an amended version of their Core Strategy building plans, and yet another Consultation is to be held on them. This follows the large numbers of responses they received to their last Consultation and the need to take account of some of the points made. They still hope to take their plans to the independent Public Enquiry inspector in mid 2013. The West Parley Parish Council will follow all this closely and will be professionally represented at the Enquiry.
Volunteer Reception Each year the Parish Council honours its volunteers, and on 19 October some 80 people had a very enjoyable party. Our principal guest Debbie Ward, recently selected as the next Chief Executive of Dorset County Council, presented the Volunteer of the Year award to West Parley resident Stuart Couper.

West Parley Volunteers Reception busy main road, and residents will be only too aware of how difficult it is to cross. The 40mph speed limit is often exceeded. Believe it or not, there are no crossings other than Parley Cross in the three and a half miles from Victoria Road Ferndown to the river Stour bridge at Kinson. The Parish Council has made this its top traffic related requirement. Officers from the County Council Environment Directorate are coming down to see what can be done. We shall keep residents posted on this.
What’s Up in West Parley Residents will notice that a feature of the recreation ground – the old wooden Scout Hut – is now gone. It was gradually rotting and beyond repair. At one time it was thought that the costs of dismantling it would be in the order of £10,000, but it was eventually demolished by volunteers at no cost to taxpayers. The site of the former hut will now be grassed over and the whole area including the playground will be smartened up with flowers and new benches.

The flower displays at Parley Cross and the flower planters at the Glenmoor Road shopping area are now being changed from their summer to their winter planting. The planters at Glenmoor Road, new this year and planted by the children from Parley First School, have been generally appreciated.

Where do roads in West Parley get their names from? The names of our roads come from a number of sources. Many roads are named after former Lords of the Manor, some from the towns they lead to, whilst others have a more obscure origin, for example, Mags Barrow is named after the Archaeologist who excavated the barrow in the 1920’s. On researching a history of Barrack Road I looked for the origin of the name. It was called the Old Pack Road in 1920’s planning applications and maps, indicating the movement of goods on pack horses, then Barrack Lane until 1950. Mrs Hunt, who once owned Barnes Farm, now part of Golden Acres, used to say that the farm was a barracks for cavalry officers in the First World War and there were a number of huts in the Road for soldiers. Others say there were barracks on the Common in the Napoleonic War. I have checked the records of Napoleonic barracks in Dorset and Parley Common is not mentioned but it is true that when smuggling was prevalent it is very likely that local militia would be stationed on Parley Common. They were there to intercept the smugglers as they brought contraband up from the Bourne Valley and Poole via Kinson, the

largest smuggling centre locally, through to Ringwood and Wimborne and elsewhere further north. The militia camps, though only temporary, may have been called Barracks. Searching the West Parley parish records, the first actual mention of Barracks comes from the Parish records from 1841 to 1843 when the Rector and Churchwardens were greatly troubled over some houses owned by the Parish and occupied by poor parishioners, known as The Barracks. They had been built in 1830 with borrowed money and the creditors were pressing for payment. The debt was eventually paid by selling two other parish houses. There is a further mention of ‘The Barracks’ in the parish records of 1854 as follows:A vestry was held in the Parish Church after notice given on Friday Sept 13th ‘54 at which the following petition was agreed to Copy of Petition To the Right Hon the Poor Law Commissioners of Great Britain We the undersigned do respectfully submit that in consequence of notice duly given a vestry was held in the Parish Church of West Parley on Friday Sept 15th 1854 to take into

At this meeting it was unanimously agreed that a petition sho’d be forwarded to Her Majesty’s Commissioner requesting them to grant leave for the sale of the above property and that the proceeds might be applied for the benefit of the parish towards liquidation of the Union charges. The name ‘The Barracks‘ may have reflected the harsh conditions under which a poor house would have been run. Conditions in the poor house would have been harsh to act as a deterrent to the poor seeking support from the parish. Further research showed that the houses known as ‘The Barracks’ were on the corner of what is now New Road and Ringwood Road, now in Ferndown, but then in West Parley. They were cleared away to build the Methodist Chapel, that is now part of the fire station. As the road name came into use in the early 1920’s, it probably came from having the old barracks at the southern end of the Road. Unless anyone knows any different? John Cullen
In the 18th century the parish was responsible for looking after the poor and originally it was thought that ‘The Barracks’ was a full workhouse, similar to those at Hampreston, Wimborne and Christchurch. However, West Parley was not large enough to support such an undertaking so ‘The Barracks’ was probably what is known as a ‘poor house’. It is likely to have been a number of very simple cob cottages with a small plot of land around to grow food and keep animals to support the Trees flanking Barrack Road as it appears today. A weight off my shoulders… and other places! The obvious benefit to taking on something like this is the weight loss - I keep pretty fit by going regularly to a gym, but as 50 approaches (alarmingly quickly) I find it increasingly hard to maintain a weight I am happy with. So the promise of half a stone or more in nine days is appealing. Also, being a bit of a long term sceptic about all things ‘alternative’, I was keen to give it a fair try. And lastly, I wanted to let Tracy see firsthand the effect the process has on someone other than herself - so when she talks about it to her customers, it’s both from a subjective and an objective viewpoint. Day 1 dawned with mixed feelings of excitement and dread - and a soon to be regretted six mile run in the gym. The first two days of the detox involve cleansing, no food and wise advice to only gently exercise. The Aloe Vera drink tastes like some type of hospital surface cleaner from which the only relief you get is water and a couple of bee

pollen pills. Lunch comes quickly - and you get a milk shake. Which tastes quite good, is pleasantly enjoyable and surprisingly filling add a couple of bee pollen pills and it feels like fine dining. My second regrettable act of the day is to follow lunch with a four and half hour round of golf in the warm sunshine, on the hilliest course in Surrey! The sense of being full might last quite well if you sit in a comfortable chair and browse through food magazines, but by the 18th hole supported by a single bottle of water, I was ready to eat the flag, clubs and fattier bits of the three guys who made up our four ball. Home to more hospital floor cleaner and whatever bees don’t seem to need anymore compressed into a disappointing and very small pill. It is about now you realise that your family spend their entire lives eating. Seemingly endless processions into to kitchen to fill up plates and bowls become the backdrop to your day. But don’t worry; you can have 8 ounces of water before bed. Bedtime at last. The odd thing is I do feel pretty good. Day 2. I will admit that the balance between excitement and dread is less evenly spread this morning - but it’s a Saturday and I plan to be active and not think about what I am doing, and it’s only 36 hours or so until I get to eat a proper meal. Knowledge is a fine thing, and I don’t go for a six mile run and I don’t arrange to play golf. I also don’t get to go for a curry and three pints of Kingfisher. And as I go to bed I notice that I actually feel really good. Day 3. I am not a religious man, but I will admit that I woke this morning feeling a sense of there being a greater force at work, guiding me. I now feel really, really well, and I get tea today! I have had a lot of teas in my life -

If I eat less, I will weigh less - And you do feel like you, and you alone, have discovered this amazing fact - and for the next 6 days of the detox you will bore everyone you meet with your discovery. The rest of the time is easy, because you now believe in what you are doing. Tutting at anyone with their hand in the biscuit jar, raising your eyebrows at that second helping of ice cream and smacking your lips as you digest another glass of water are just the outward demonstrations of your new position as a living, breathing and downright unapproachable angel!! Day 10. It’s over. Woke up, unfolded my ever growing wings and spurned a fry-up for another floor

cleaner/bee session. I shall not stray. Went out to my brother-in-law's birthday - I might have a pint, I might not, I have earned it. Not sure I had earned the right to eight pints of Fosters followed by an obscene and frenzied attack on an unsuspecting Cadbury Cream Egg Easter egg - which I devoured in its entirety in less than five minutes. I think I ate my halo and my wings too..... But the next day I was back in the land of the restrained and smug, and am intent on staying there, but for all those around me I think I’ll drop the evangelical bit. Weighed in at the end and had lost 10lbs. I feel and look thinner. I go to sleep quicker and for longer. My stomach feels great and I think I will look at food and beer slightly differently from now on. I am now drinking the floor cleaner by choice - and have discovered it comes in slightly less objectionable flavours. Well worth the money, and the experience.

Raging hormones make stag Morris a threat to all males! Raging hormones and the call of Nature are making Morris the red deer stag at New Forest Wildlife Park extremely frisky. It’s the annual rutting season and Morris has been squaring up to all males, even his human male keepers and the massive European bison who share his enclosure. “He can’t think of anything else,” said New Forest Wildlife Park Animal Manager Jason Palmer. “He’ll do anything to protect his girls and even though he’s the only red deer stag in the park, he is still very aggressive to males of any other species. “His hormones are really raging and he’s stopped eating. He needs to prove himself, but he can’t fight other red deer stags, so he’ll have a go at anything else. He was eyeing me up and making threatening gestures the other day so we’ll have to keep away from him for the time being. We’ve also separated him from the bison to avoid any trouble.” The rutting season for red deer usually takes place for around three months, between October and January, depending on what part of the country the deer are located in. During the rut, or breeding season, red deer stags in the wild return to the hinds’ home ranges and compete for breeding access, squaring up to other male competitors in elaborate displays of dominance, including roaring and fighting. Whoever wins the fight becomes the

dominant stag and has exclusive access to the female hinds. The red deer normally share an enclosure and field with the park’s three male European bison, who are part of a captive breeding programme for endangered species. European bison used to be native to Britain and would normally cohabit with red deer in the wild. “Morris has nine hinds in his enclosure and he has no real competition, but he can’t help himself,” said Jason. “He has to use up the aggression and energy someh ow, so h e keep s b ellowin g constantly and adding long grass and twigs and moss to his antlers to make

In woodland populations, hinds over one year old usually give birth to a single calf* after an eight-month gestation period, between mid May to mid July each year. New Forest Wildlife Park has several species of otters, deer and owls, including the endangered giant otter, as well as lynx, foxes, wallabies, European bison, wolves, wild boar, ferrets, pine marten, polecats, harvest mice, badgers and more. The park is involved in international breeding programmes for endangered species and also works with the RSPCA to rescue injured or abandoned animals.
